FT: Newcastle 2 PSV 2 - Magpies Play Well

August 6th, 2008 · 52 Comments

nufc-crest.png

Newcastle United were unlucky not to come away with the win tonight, when PSV finally equalized after 71 minutes to deny Newcastle what would have been a good win.

The Dutch champions were caught napping at the start of the game, and after just 7 minutes found themselves two goals down.

After three minutes an excellent cross from Geremi, from a corner, was headed strongly into the net by Steven Taylor, who certainly enjoyed the goal, and put it away very well indeed.

And then just four minutes later a beautiful passing move by Newcastle that involved Taylor and germei at the start, saw James Milner clear and James laid the ball off to new boy Danny Guthrie to his left, and the 21 year-old coolly slotted the ball past former Manchester City goalkeeper Andreas Isaksson.

A terrific team goal by the Newcastle side.

In his first 8 minutes of his debut against Hartlepool United Danny Guthrie made one and scored one, and then on his home debut tonight, he scored after just 7 minutes.

This Danny Guthrie boy could be a great player for us in the future.

PSV came back into the game after their poor start, and on 32 minutes  got a goal back with Ibrahim Afellay slotting through a crowd of players from the edge of the penalty area, after Given had blocked Nordin Amrabat’s first effort.

Geremi should have given Newcastle a third goal when Milner made a great move and had the ball across the box to the Cameroon International, who only had to put the ball home, but Isaksson made a terrific stop right on the line. Geremi, however should have scored.

Newcastle then paid the price of that missed chance, when after 71 minutes Amrabat picked up a loose ball in the box and fired the ball past Shay Given in the home goal.

This Newcastle team again seemed a patched up side, but they played quite well tonight, and Milner and Duff played up front to some good effect.

What we are not getting out of these games however is perhaps 45 minutes of Kevin playing his best side, since so many first teamers are out injured right now.

But this was a really much better effort from the lads than in the terrible heat of Mallorca.

  • 17 anth // Aug 6, 2008 at 22:18

guys this is the translation this the best i could do:Real Club Deportivo and Newcastle have sealed this afternoon to transfer the club Fabricio Coloccini English. Both clubs had reached a verbal agreement last week that was signed today in writing.

The Argentine international arrived at Deportivo in the market for the winter season of 1994-95 from Milan. It cost 3 million and, in return, the team “rossonero” undertook to play the Teresa Herrera Trophy Centennial of sports. Four seasons later, Coloccini was going to Newcastle, leaving a benefit to the entity that white could reach the 13 million euros.

From San Cristobal, Miguel Angel Lotina took over from yesterday and the departure of Central deportivista. Now tap a replacement. “I have clear what I want and the player himself and his agent know it. But I prefer to keep before a meeting with the President,” argued the technical basque in a press conference held in the Venezuelan city.

  • 18 Chicken // Aug 6, 2008 at 22:24

This is roughly what it is saying on the official Depor site…

“Deportivo and Newcastle have sealed the late transfer of Fabricio Coloccini to the English club. Both clubs had reached a verbal agreement last week that today was signed in writing. “

  • 19 51times // Aug 6, 2008 at 22:26

Looks legit…good to get it done.

  • 20 ziad // Aug 6, 2008 at 22:26

  • 21 Electric Dragon // Aug 6, 2008 at 22:27

A little more I found on the Coloccini transfer….from Marca, they are stating that the transfer fee is 16 million Euros……

  • 22 buddy // Aug 6, 2008 at 22:27

well?? how did we act play today does anyone know?? any better?? how was guti?? about time we won a game tho

  • 23 Kevin // Aug 6, 2008 at 22:27

LOL Hobs - this isn’t the first time though - our late run last season began on the first game that Keegan dropped Smith. It’s no coincidence or joke! The boy can’t play!!

Could it have been Gomis?!?! It did look like him but was taken at a strange angle…that’d be immense!!

  • 24 Toon1978 // Aug 6, 2008 at 22:29

Would be nice if we unvail Colicinni,Gomez,Inlar,Derdyok and Warnock all at the same time.

  • 25 Matt // Aug 6, 2008 at 22:29

I watched the first half but had to go out. From what I saw Gutierrez looks pretty good. Guthrie did much better than I expected and I think Milner can play that more central role if needs be. Duff looked fairly handy switching sides and apart from the goal the defense seemed to keep a bit of composure about them

  • 26 Kevin // Aug 6, 2008 at 22:29

A couple daft defensive plays, but overall an uplifting performance, like Ed said. Jonas is a great player. GREAT buy - Gurthrie as well.
If we can “trim the fat” of Smith et al, stay healthy, and play like frigging men on the pitch, our squad will be good enough for top half of the table.

I’m seeing quality - but not enough consistency.

  • 27 Rafian // Aug 6, 2008 at 22:30

Awesome! It’s official, Collocini is a Newcastle United player!!

announced on the official Deportivo site that it’s signed on the dotted line!

Fantastic signing. Now our defence looks the part!

  • 28 keeganjr // Aug 6, 2008 at 22:31

they say it was drenthe… i hope that is true

  • 29 Leo // Aug 6, 2008 at 22:33

what was the formation? i didnt get the chance to watch it much and i cant get onto the other blog article damn it

  • 30 keeganjr // Aug 6, 2008 at 22:34

    4.6.0……. almost

  • 31 Fergie // Aug 6, 2008 at 22:34

Guys, I know these stories are usually complete and utter s**t, and i’m usually the first to say so… but… before you get your hopes up about us signing Gomis or Drenthe, I am reliably informed that the black guy with long dreadlocks seen in the directors box tonight is in fact a 17 year old striker from london who was on trial and played in a behind-closed-doors game against a Motherwell XI at the training ground today, in which he scored 2 goals. Keegan liked what he saw and so he signed him before the game tonight.

  • 32 Howie // Aug 6, 2008 at 22:34

whos they keeganjr? i thought he was at olympics.

  • 33 keeganjr // Aug 6, 2008 at 22:37

some at the blog at justin tv.. i dont know, i didn’t see him.. but i guess that was just crap..

  • 34 anth // Aug 6, 2008 at 22:37

drenthe is a lb pays for real, was he at the game ????/

  • 35 ToonKing // Aug 6, 2008 at 22:37

we played fairly decent. Gutierrez looks a class signing and Guthrie was very good again. Milner was suprisingly good and probably our best man.

Defense was still shaky and there were a few very close calls…..oh and Enrique cost us a goal again… :(

PS: Oba the moon with Colo signing !!!!!

  • 36 Matt // Aug 6, 2008 at 22:37

It was effectively 4-5-1 with the 1 switching between Duff and Milner. To be honest though Butt and Geremi we’re holding pretty much and Duff, Milner, Gutierrez and Guthrie seemed to have free roles within the 4 positions. It looked fairly effective for a while considering we had no strikers on the pitch.

  • 37 Danny G // Aug 6, 2008 at 22:38

Yeah the official depor site says that Coloccini has signed!!

Great news…Especially if that player was Gomis!!

  • 38 Shola Ameobi // Aug 6, 2008 at 22:38

Postives - No Alan Smith, Guthire and Jonas look solid to say the least, and the fact we got 2 without a striker on the pitch. I heard a rumor today keano is looking to take smith down the road to the scum.

Negative - No Collo anouncement, the fact oba didnt even make the bench. I hope his injurys not going to keep him out for much longer.

  • 39 Robby Bobson // Aug 6, 2008 at 22:38

Game was good..glad to hear Colocinni has signed apparently

The defence was steady, Beye was outpaced a few times, but he isn’t back to full fitness so will be rusty, so can be forgiven. Enrique played well until his mistake for the second goal, i feel sorry for the lad every mistake he makes seems to lead to a goal.

In midfield Guiterez was full of running and will be a GREAT player for us. Milner was 3 times the player he as against Mallorca and Guthrie and Butt was strong.

Up front..wel we didn’t actually have any natural strikers on the pitch.

MOTM - Danquah for his 5 seconds on the pitch

  • 40 Leo // Aug 6, 2008 at 22:39

who played in what position keeganjnr?

    given
    beye cacapa taylor enrique

    geremi butt

    milner guthrie duff guitarrez

    was that the formation

  • 41 Howie // Aug 6, 2008 at 22:40

is anyone watching SSN. i heard keegan has denied smith is going. he had a knock

  • 42 Ben K // Aug 6, 2008 at 22:40

Spidey looked great, amazing skill on the ball. Milner looked good, with some improvement on the final ball. I was also impresed by the late substitute Ryan Donaldson. Looked good with the ball, and made some intelligent runs. Unfortunately, he’s our best fit striker.

  • 43 james w // Aug 6, 2008 at 22:41

cheers fergie, for destroying all my hopes of it being Drenthe!!! where’d you hear this….. some little fat manx man in the bookies!!

  • 44 Fergie // Aug 6, 2008 at 22:41

i’m telling you, its not gomis, drenthe, emmanuelson or anybody else remotely famous… just an english youth player who will hopefully be one for the future

  • 45 Chris F // Aug 6, 2008 at 22:41

overall it was a good performance.

first half we were the better side, and unlucky not to be 3-1 up at ht.

general play was good, as has been mentioned, a couple of odd clearances put us under pressure, the 2nd of which led to their equaliser, but the boys looked solid enough other than that.

Guthrie does look like he could be a bargain, he got about really well, and took his goal very well, capping an exceptional team move.

once we made subs, it kinda drifted away from us, but thats to be expected, with players coming on out of position, especially when they were all kids pretty much.

plenty of positives to take from that game, frankly.

milner going off with a knock was a bit worrying, but it only looked a slight one, he seemed to walk off ok.

  • 46 Chris F // Aug 6, 2008 at 22:48

    Le0, it was more like:

    ……………………Given

    Beye…..Taylor………Cacapa…….Enrique

    ………Geremi…..Guthrie….Butt

…..duff………………………….guttierez (with them swapping sides often)

    ……………..milner

in all honesty, it worked pretty well in the first half, plenty of movement and pace up front, just lacking a good finisher.

  • 47 STF // Aug 6, 2008 at 23:00

Who is this Gomis guy? Any good? I would likely still prefer the Swiss player Derdiyok.

There was a while there that Keegan was saying he might get 2 more players in, I reckon he knows very well his spending limit however now Smith might go and hence the new version “2 or maybe 3 plyers to come in”. Maybe Im hoping for too much…

  • 48 HATE PRAWN SANDWICHES // Aug 6, 2008 at 23:00

ex-Liverpool man Steve Mcmahon was in the directors box watching tonights match! he is the commercial director of the singapore based company “Rcom” which is valued at £22.5billion and was one of the two companies that was in the article released by NOTW!
INTERESTING!!! is there a takeover in the offing?

  • 49 james w // Aug 6, 2008 at 23:13

As i said b4 fergie where did you get this information?? although with a name like that i wouldnt be surprised if your a man u fan having us on!! who do you think you are alex ferguson??

  • 50 Davy C // Aug 6, 2008 at 23:59

I thought it was an overral decent performance tonight. We came out of the blocks really well. I was impressed with Taylor and take back what I said about him the other day! He maybe needs to work on his zonal marking at set pieces but he was faultless tonight.

Cacapa played well alongside him and looked very comfortable. A couple of his passes went astray but he covered himself well and also looked good when he stepped up to replace Butt in midfield.

Beye lookes assured as usual and Enrique played well apart fro two mistakes - one of which led to the equaliser.

I thought Geremi was outstanding in the first half, he looked like a whole new player. Guthrie had a good game again but I’m slightly concerned about him losing possession just in front of our 18 yard box - he’s done that a few times in the games I’ve seen him play and he’d be punished by better opposition.

Spiderman played well and had some lovely touches with Milner and Duff who also both played well up front together and swapping the supporting role at times. My brother thought Spidey looked a bit lightweight but I think he just got caught by a few bad tackles. He will hopefully be a great acquisition.

Edgar looked out of place and short of pace when he came on and Bassong didn’t have a great deal to do.

Given made some great saves as usual and Butt got stuck in.

The overral passing was very good and we just missed that cutting edge up front but to me it all bodes well!

  • 51 Darryl // Aug 7, 2008 at 0:11

Well, i never said it was Gomis. I blatently said it looked like him. Same hair style, same colour, similar characteristics. from the side anyway.

  • 52 Anthony // Aug 7, 2008 at 4:33

finally one person praises Taylor who deserved to be MOTM…fair enough Davy

the new scapegoat will be Enrique in here very soon

quite impress with our new signings overall, especially Guthrie

Dr. Ed Harrison is a retired IBM Consulting Group Executive who now has time, and lots of it, after 34 years at the American computer company, to write about his lifelong passion - Newcastle United Football Club.

Ed was born and bred in Newcastle Upon Tyne, and watched his first game at St. James’ Park in 1949 as a 4 year-old with his Mother and Father. He was told to look out for number 9 - Jackie Milburn – the great Wor Jackie - and was he fast!

In football terms Ed was a goalkeeper and played for Wharrier Street Primary School and Newcastle Minors (Newcastle Schoolboys Under-11), in 1956 and went on to play for Newcastle Schoolboys and Northumberland Schoolboys (Under-15) in 1959 and an England Schoolboys trial.

He was at Newcastle United for a couple of years from 1960 as an amateur, while still at school, and played with Bobby Moncur and David Craig, amongst others, for the Newcastle United Under-18 side (Newcastle N’s in those days), during the relegation season of 1960-1961.

Ed attended Heaton Technical and Manor Park schools, and then went on to study at both King’s College, London (BSc Electrical Engineering) and Newcastle University (PhD Computer Science). He played for Newcastle Universities and England Universities from 1967 until 1970.

But a short couple of years after Ed joined IBM in 1970, he was shipped over to the USA, with his new wife Madeline, a beautiful local Newcastle lassie.

At IBM Ed was in computer systems and network design for 34 years, and in his last 10 years at the company was persuaded to enter executive management. where he ended up running IBM's Americas' Network Consulting Group for 5 years from the late 1990s, and was instrumental in forming the IBM alliance with Cisco Systems in 1999.

Ed and Madeline live just outside Raleigh in North Carolina. Their twin sons Paul and Neil, and daughter Elaine, are now in their early 30s, live close by, and Neil has carried on the family tradition by becoming an avid Newcastle United supporter.

And one final thing that is so true - you can take the boy out of Newcastle but you can't take Newcastle out of the boy!

    Howay The Lads!!
