Gutierrez and Guthrie Make Home Debuts

August 6th, 2008 · 147 Comments

nufc-crest.pngpsv-eindhoven.png

Newcastle’s two new signings Jonas Gutierrez and Danny Guthrie will make their home debut for tonight’s visit of Dutch champions PSV Eindhoven.
And as expected Habib Beye, Newcastle’s player of the season in his first season on Tyneside, makes his first appearance of the pre-season, after recovering from an Achilles heel injury.

Nicky Butt returns to captain the side, in the absence of Michael Owen, who we hope will be available for Saturday’s game against Valencia.

Steven Taylor and Claudio Cacapa start in the center of defense with bey and Enrique the full backs.

Smith and  N’Zogbia are rested and it looks a bit of an odd team, and we suppose that Duff and Milner will play up front.

It could be that boy Jonas Guttierrez could play in attack too.

TEAMS:

Newcastle United:
Shay Given, Jose Enrique, Claudio Cacapa, Danny Guthrie, Damien Duff, James Milner, Jonas Gutierrez, Geremi, Nicky Butt (c), Steven Taylor, Habib Beye
Subs: Tim Krul, Frank Wiafe Danquah, Ben Tozer, David Edgar, Ryan Donaldson, Sebastien Bassong

PSV: Andreas Isaksson, Carlos Salcido, Francisco ‘Maza’ Rodriguez, Timmy Simmons (c), Danko Lazovic, Nordien Amrabat, Jeremie Brechet, Jason Culina, Reimond Manco, Ibrahim Afellay, Stijn Wuytens
Subs: Cassio Ramos, Mike Zonneveld, Danny Koevermans, Eric Addo, Balazs Dzsudzsak, Tommie van der Leegte, Mika Vayrynen, Rens Van Eijden

Referee: Chris Foy
Attendance: tbc

No Smith, must be off to Everton!!!

  • 2 looney toon // Aug 6, 2008 at 19:22

i hope smith is off to everton - i believe we actually have a chance of scoring without him in the team!

  • 3 Chris H // Aug 6, 2008 at 19:22

    No forwards!

I wonder if there’s actually something in this Big Willie comments concerning Smith.

  • 4 Rikki // Aug 6, 2008 at 19:22

Where is Andy Carroll ? Is he injured or what ?
Who will be playing as a striker tonight ?

  • 8 Patrick // Aug 6, 2008 at 19:25

Ed, this squad of NUFC does not make too much sense unless we are using Duff as the only striker!

  • 9 Patrick // Aug 6, 2008 at 19:25

  • 10 A geordiedoonsooth // Aug 6, 2008 at 19:25

Not just no Smith but no N’Zogbia tonight is he off as well. If these 2 are going I hope we have at least 3 top players apart from Collocini lined up before next Saturday

  • 11 Cooper // Aug 6, 2008 at 19:26

yea no smith i see? might actually have a sniff at goal tonight.

But i stil think we will get tortured off the dutch champions.

  • 12 Patrick // Aug 6, 2008 at 19:26

Why am I posting the last message twice!?

I think it’s time to test the partnership of Donaldson and Zamblera (if he’s back).

  • 13 Tom // Aug 6, 2008 at 19:27

Its a shame Bassong isn’t playing. Thats a weak centre back pairing. Hopefully the whole bench will get a runout!

  • 14 Cooper // Aug 6, 2008 at 19:28

$hit $hit $hit - where the hell is zog - we cant afford to loose him aswell

  • 15 Tom // Aug 6, 2008 at 19:32

    Zog might just be rested.

yea we need a stream - footy doctors not working

  • 20 Matt Lacey // Aug 6, 2008 at 19:38

Duff played a forward role a few times at Blackburn so I expect he’ll be partnering Milner up front.

Not sure about the CB pairing but, we’ll see…

  • 21 9 Shearer // Aug 6, 2008 at 19:38

Zogs was rested the last match not this too. I think he is injuried.

  • 26 Tom_Toon // Aug 6, 2008 at 19:42

    Probably:

    Given
    Beye-Cacapa-Taylor-Enrique
    Geremi-Butt-Guthrie
    Guti-Milner-Duff

Zog has a sloght knock i think, he didnt play v Mallorca because of it too.

  • 30 craig chisholm // Aug 6, 2008 at 19:45

this team looks stupid - not a single striker. bollocks resting zogs - why we resting him when the season has not even started?? load of crap. he is either off or he is injured or we have fell out with him and his dummy has flown out again. how the hell can we be going into a new season with no strikers available? where are the goals coming from?? this side is clearly a 4-5-1 too. where is zamblera???

  • 31 LoonyToon // Aug 6, 2008 at 19:46

A bit off topic but I’ve just bought nufctv coz of the special offer (And so I can watch tonights match - sad eh) and I have to say it’s a lot better than I expected. The picture quality is excellent too. A lot better than the usual streaming I have to watch. I’m chuffed to bits.
I just thought you’d like to know what it’s like if anyone is thinking about getting it.

Duff has played up top for Ireland too, right?

I can’t see Gutierrez up front–my spanish friends tell me one of his key attributes is the unstoppable running all the time, so makes more sense in the midfield.

We don’t need any new players. We may have sold Emre and Rozenhal for £6M and spent £4 mil on two players (two mil to Mike!!!) but we don’t need any new players. The squad is big enough and there is enough class to get us into the Champions League. Genius Mike Ashley.

So because Taylor plays well, scores and for once makes no costly errors he’s a world beater. Still think he’d be a better RB than a CB. Didnt get to the match but sounds like they played well. If Taylor plays like he did tonight perhaps fans wont get on his case so much, long may it continue !
