Newcastle Reported Interest In Congo DR Left-Back

There are reports in France today that Toulouse center back Herita Ilunga is a target for Newcastle United.

herita-ilunge-2.jpg

Herita Ilunge – on the right is reported target for Newcastle?

The Congo DR International left-back, who has 18 caps, only recently threatened to move, having been considered second choice full-back during pre-season.

It looks like the 26-year-old 5’11” defender may be ready to seek other opportunities because he wants to play at center-back.

The reports say that Newcastle United may be keen on him, and he would seem a good choice, because we do need a left back and some cover in central defense.

But his main use to the Tyneside club would be at left-back since we will have Taylor, Faye, Coloccini, Bassong and Edgar fighting it out for the two central defensive positions.

He is rated at just £2M, and that would attract Newcastle, who seem to be on a small budget this summer, for whatever reason.

Ilunga joined Toulouse in the summer of 2007 from Saint-Etienne, and helped the Ligue 1 club stay in the top French League during a tough season last year, in which he appeared 35 times.

He played 135 times for St. Etienne before that, and joined that team in 2003, from Espanyol B.

Toulouse manager Alain Casanova told L’Equipe (the French nationwide daily newspaper devoted to sports) today:

“He expressed himself, but it’s just his sensation at the start of the season,”

“A season is long. We will see how this is going to end up in August and take a decision.”

We need a left back on Tyneside, and if the 26 year-old fits the bill, he may be the player to push Jose Enrique this coming season.

It’s known that Keegan is very impressed with the 4 African players Newcastle have in the squad right now, in Faye, Beye, Geremi and Martins.

That’s not only for their fine play, but also for their professionalism and attitude, so he may be tempted to bring in the African, although he will probably seek some advice from some of his African contingent, before he does that.

Comments welcome.

If he wants away from Two-loo’s, for being considered No2 (no pun intended), why would he want to come here, and compete for a position here, or supply back-up.

Coloccini and Kilcline as CB’s, a barbers dream!!!!

burdisso is the man we want. Why set ur sights low. I love enrique but if hes not willing at such a tender age to sit on the bench now ans hen cos barca want him or whoever then… he hasn’t got that love for the club. We want desire to take us to the next level not to earn a fat wage. Burdisso covers both and with coloccini it would be immense.. He is so good

m4rko, i think the players are suggested are awesome! they got quality and they are proven. even if they aren’t below 28, we’re not paying a fee for them so i doubt cashley would mind. GET IN!

    From Italy…
Burdisso is not transferable because the Inter Milan has many injured among which chivu cordoba samuel materazzi, they have only rivas and burdisso

If u want some news from italy…i am here 😀

Am not being racist here but all I know is that Africans put in their all compared to anyother. Look at Essien at Chelsea, Faye at Bolton, Martins at Inter, Drogba at Chelsea, Beye at NUFC, Sisonko at Juve and many others you know what i mean. Lets get this guy he will work hard like he is a geordie.

Newcastle fans – I thought Mr Keegan was going to use his charm to bring in all these wonderful palyers so that we can play the sexiest football ever played in the PL?????? IDIOTS. This man hasn’t even got the clout to attract talents from the continent, nor the tactical nous to make maximum use of what he has! Look at Ramos at Spurs, and the impact he’s had there within this short space of time.

Keep dreaming folks – no wonder Geordies are laughed at around the country as the thickest fans!!!

Adam, just because he has become second choice at Toulouse doesn’t necessarily mean he is a bad player. This could be down to many things, maybe his style of LB doesn’t suit the rest of the back line, or maybe it doesn’t compliment the LW. Maybe Toulouse have a young LB who they want to see develop and they feel it would be best to push him through. Maybe Ilunga has suffered a dip in form towards the end of the season. There are all types of scenarios. It is best to wait and see the player before writing him off i think.

Anyway, the players situation with his team is not important. Just the players attributes. Our scouts may feel he would compliment OUR team. After all, different team mates, different league, different coaches etc = different player a lot of the time.

SURELY STOREY AT £3-4 WOULD BE A FAR FAR BETTER BET THAN THESE UNKNOWNS THAT KEEP BEING BANDIED ABOUT….. LIKE THIS LATEST 2ND CHOICE LB FROM FROM TOULOUSE. DONT THINK ASHLEY EVER WANTED TO OPEN HIS WALLET FOR KK , AND PROBABLY MORE UNLIKELY AS HE COULD BE SELLING UP- PROBABLY REGARD IT AS DEAD MONEY. WE ALL KNOW KK NEEDS A QUALITY LB , AMF AND STRIKER !!!!!

I am a sunderland fan but I have got to say that Newcastle Habib Beye should be in the team of the season. That mans quality.

not interested in this bloke at all, his rep is shite and he is always throwing his dummy out the pram – worse than zogs – the diff being that zogs is going to be world class – this bloke has nothing going for him. we just cant go on filling up the ranks with basement buys but at the same time expect to achieve anything other than a relegation dog fight. shorey would be my choice and he is available for around 3.5 million. get him in.

Also, despite the lack of faith in our team of Wise, Vetere etc. I have been quietly impressed with them as near enough all of the players we have been looking at, or have signed have been good quality e.g. Bassong & Guthrie are now looking good buys.

Anyway it was always between Beye and Sagna for best RB, Sagna probably nicked it slightly for quality, but he didnt play the whole season, unlike our very own Habib Beye who was immense in almost every game he played. fantastic buy that one, hats off to Sam for that.

Ilunga seems too similar to Bassong for me to believe we are still interested in him to tell the truth. Probably declared interest early on in the summer, before the Bassong trial.
