Kevin Keegan says that his captain Michael Owen will be ready to lead the team out, when Newcastle United start their Premier League season against Manchester United, at Old Trafford, on August 17.
Michael Owen – Keegan thinks Owen will be fit for first game
However, Keegan is also wary of rushing Michael’s return, which he says he will not do.
Owen is actually back in training, but when asked about his chances of playing against Valencia, on Saturday, Kevin told nufcTV last night:
“I don’t think so.”“Michael will want to play and maybe have half a match, but I’ve told him I won’t risk him.”
“He’ll be fit for Manchester United as long as he doesn’t have any setbacks. He’s just started running again and done a lot of strength work. He’s a very fit boy.”
“We must get some football into him again now but we can do that internally without throwing him into a game five days after his comeback.”
It will be good to have Michael available for the Manchester United game, but we wonder if he’ll really be match fit by then?
We hope so, because our first game will be very important to hopefully get our season off to a good start.
