Keegan Still Looking To Assemble Quality Squad

Newcastle United manager Kevin Keegan said that an ankle injury was the reason Alan Smith missed the pre-season friendly 2-2 draw with PSV Eindhoven last night.

Alan Smith – has ankle injury

There have been reports that Everton are interested in the former Manchester United and Leeds striker, but the reports say that Everton would offer only £1.5M, which is a quarter of the price Newcastle paid the Red Devils, exactly a year ago for the player.

Smith was not named in the 17-man squad for the game against PSV last night, and of course is started some rumors that he may be on his way out of Tyneside.

But Newcastle manager Keegan cleared up the situation after the game and explained:

“He’s got a sore ankle.”   I knew when I left him out that it would cause you (the Press) to ask questions but I can’t treat him any differently to anyone else. I haven’t risked anybody.”

“He’s a smashing lad, he’s very very popular at the club and he can play in a lot of different positions, so he’s a valuable player for us.”

Keegan is of course still hoping add some new players to his squad before our season gets under way in 10 days time against Manchester United.

After the game tonight there was a report on the official Deportivo web site, that said Colccini was now a Newcastle player.

Kevin admitted there could be some new developments on the transfer front within the next couple of days.

“”I honestly believe we will probably get two more players in at least – and maybe three – and we’ll work hard with a quality squad,”

“You look at the players we used tonight and look at the players that weren’t there and I think we have a very strong squad.”

Assuming we get Coloccini in, we would need at least another left-back and a central midfield player, at a minimum.

If those are 3 quality signings, there’s no doubt we’ll have a quality squad – no doubt at all.

However, we’ll still be a little short on numbers, especially if we keep getting the number of injuries we’ve experienced in the pre-season so far.

Comments welcome.

I still think a striker is a necessity, even if takeing a risk and getting Adriano on loan, or something along those lines, because we CANNOT rely on Smith to grab us goals

Yo Kevin, What about goalscorers ?
Is`nt it obvious we need help up front, who`s gonna score for us ?
Has`nt that been your approach, you score three we will score four ?
Listen KK we really need a CF who can link up with the two dwarfs.
Anelka would be my choice but Bent would also be a great buy.
Cuellar and Evans would fill out the defence and of course either Veloso or Moutinho as the midfield engine room, viola!

So let me get this straight… Keegan is going to assemble a quality squad by injuring Smith’s ankle? Sounds about right to me 😉

What’s the deal with the injuries? Why can’t our club ever solve this nagging problem? BSA seemed to be the only Manager in recent history to keep our disabled list at least somewhat clean. It’s disheartening to have to field Milner and Duff as forwards. I’d say we need another striker more than a CM and not just because of the game today. With only 3 real options at forward, we’re pretty threadbare. I shouldn’t be greedy as it seems we’re lucky to be signing anyone at all…

yeah As much as it pains the management to cut their losses there they might have to just do that and then invest in another striker. He has great attitude and work ethic but some people just dont have it. I hope i am wronge and he gets “it” back.

Good to have you back TomToon. your insight is something i like reading.

I do not understand why we dont play carrol? Is he injured or on loan?

I still think NUFC should try and get Heskey.Bruce has been signing strikers all summer and is rumoured to be after another one,and also Camara is back in the fold at Wigan,so why not give it a go?

Enrique MUST be replaced, yet again his fault lead to their equaliser last night, he was at fault against doncaster and many other times last season, he is a liability almost as much as smith. A decent striker and LB would be my priority

Heskey is a good shout, considering our position.

He would be cheap, very PL experienced, and has good understanding with Owen. Perfect really, as a short term solution.

And i agree about Enrique. I think a lot of fans find it hard to accepot that at the moment he is mediocre at best. PErhaps because he cost so much, perhaps because he’s still very young, perhaps because he came with a lot of hype, i don’t know. But for some reason, people seem to think he should be 1st choice and a back up need ot be brought.

I say make HIM back up, and buy a decent experienced LB.

I agree with the other Ian up there, I cannot see why they dont put Fabio on, and or one of the other reserve strikers, we have established that Smith wasnt good in a striker role, Shola didnt improve, we have doubts about Carroll so surely this would have been an opportunity to try him/them, if one of them was better then we could still buy another striker but leave that player as next choice, maybe Keegan didnt want to put him on in case he had a one off spectacular game and the board didnt think they need another striker???

Anhow much better match, glad to see Guthrie score, the players that score straight away at the club rarely have any problems and Taylor showed his worth again!!

My only grievance with KK is his support of Smith. Let the Toffees have him – or are we trying to prevent his sale by a medical failing bad ankle? KK says Smith is liked by everyone.
I think that a million or more Tynesiders might disagree with that.

dave v – this is from the Journal this morning:

Last night’s match was watched by Steve McMahon, a director of the Singapore-based Profitable Group, who were last week linked with a possible takeover of the club. Instead, they are forging a commercial tie-up with the Magpies to promote the club in the lucrative Far East market.

So just looks like we’re after some more money!

There seems to be some sort of striker injury curse, how is it possible to have 6 first team-ready strikers out at once? Still, so long as we’ve got Owen and Martins for the Man Utd game…

  • Ian-first one!!

Matt lacey, agree how can we have 6 strikers all off at once!!!

The trouble is Shola, Smith and Carroll arent really part of our strike force and Viduka is a good but older player on a free transfer who we got on the cheap, but Viduka is added in as if he is a young top of his game striker, so really we only have two prime full time recognised strikers, the others just keep clouding up the issue, it has always been the same we pay a lot for one, then dont get in one or two just to hold the fort if we get injuries, the last time we did was when Keegan himself got in an old player John Barnes and we had to use him a lot more than we would have liked but he did a job for us. So if we arent buying another good proven striker why dont we do the same again?

arctoa, you are right, bad memory, it worked for us anyhow as we got to the FA cup final.

Rush was a disaster, but he was always a final touch player and that relies on youthful reflexes.

Dads Army!! a couple of those would do! Jason Roberts and Sibieski to save the day if everyone is on their sick beds!!
