The Evening Chronicle is reporting today that Newcastle United and Deportivo La Coruna have agreed a fee close to £10M fee for Argentinian defender Fabricio Coloccini.

Fabricio Coloccini - still not officially signed
That hardly seems like new news, but nevertheless the move will no go ahead once the 26-year-old defender passes a medical at St James’ Park. He also needs to agree personal terms with Newcastle, but we think that’s already been handled with the player and his agent.
Deportivo issued a statement last night on their web-site, saying Coloccini was a Newcastle player and the Chronicle is quoting today the following statement from the Spanish club:
“Real Club Deportivo and Newcastle have agreed the transfer of Fabricio Coloccini to the English club.”
“The clubs had reached a verbal agreement last week which was today confirmed in writing.â€
It’s a good job this transfer doesn’t take as long as the normal move - otherwise we’d be hard pressed to bring in even one more player before the end of the season. Â
It will only be official once it’s announced on the Newcastle official site , and as we write this - there’s nothing on that site about Coloccini finally signing.
When he does sign, Fabricio will become Newcastle’s most expensive defender ever, taking the mantle from Jonathan Woodgate.
Comments welcome.

This club just astonishes me at times.
It really shouldn’t take this long to sort this transfer out.
There has to be things behind the scenes that we don’t know about but my worry is, the longer it takes to sort out and the more it’s in the public eye as an ‘unfinshed’ transfer, then the chances of other clubs putting in higher bids/wages etc increases 1o fold.
P.S. the other player we will sign I’m sure of is Shorey.
8 Hatty // Aug 7, 2008 at 13:26
Ed, Deportivo today confirmed that he is a Newcastle player. I’d be inclined to believe them over Alan Oliver. Deportivo say, on the front of their official newspaper that gets sent out to season ticket holders:
http://www.canaldeportivo.com/servlet/es.iris.servlets.DeporSport/5/2008/08/07/1
Translated:
Coloccini is now officially the Newcastle.
The player went yesterday to the headquarters of the club to sign his release form. Today he will give a press conference and in the evening he will travel to his new destiny.

All I got was news through that Shorey was in talks with at least one club. If Villa have come out public, then they’re pretty confident he’s their player.
Shame, although he’s quite small, he’s pretty good.
Still, leaves the door open for someone better - Drenthe would be good.

Oh the amount Im sick of how long transfers take pales into insignificance next how sick to the back teeth of listening to you utter miserable b*stards rabbit on about things you know nothing about.
The reason things take so long is a simple equation:
[How terrible a season we just had x chaos at club] / [no european football x zero international reputation] x quality of players we’re trying to sign x [the whole football industry being of it's head at how much players are worth x every club taking an eternity to sign players] = How long it takes us to sign a player.
Arshavin the player you all rubbed yourselves silly about at the Euros is still sitting without a deal weeks later. In fact every big transfer touted this year either hasn’t been completed or took an age to complete.
34 Lionel // Aug 7, 2008 at 14:03
When he signs he signs. 24 hour news make everything seem along time- there could be a thousand reasons why it’s take just over a week to tie up. All this impatience is dilluting the fact he is coming. The club haven’t misled anybody, only Keegan saying “in the next 24hours” hopefully we’ll have a new signing. If it takes this long and it gets done, that is a quality defender coming here, then well done Wise and co, fantastic job. They’ll have got Guitterez and Guthrie on the quiet, Bassong on a well organised trial and sign and now the Big C. Look at Everton, Portsmouth, Man.City, Villa until maybe today, Blackburn- no big business really. I reckon Wise’s lot are doing great. After all Modric and I think Aimar didn’t want to come here, as Aimar said” i have always been lucky enough to choose where i want to go” after joining Benfica. So let’s not get caught up in modern Blog world and blame other people for living and carry out deals in real time- that Deportivo Chairman is probably a nightmare to do business with.

41 Spain Steve // Aug 7, 2008 at 14:23
According to Spains http://www.AS.com, the problem is due to Diego Colotte not yet putting pen to paper for DLC. Once this is done, he is ours.
42 Matt Lacey // Aug 7, 2008 at 14:24
I’m sorry if people disagree with this but I do think the club has to take some responsibility for the snail-like rate at which these transfers have been done.
Sure, Jonas and Guthrie were signed on the quiet but a) we have no idea how long the deal for Jonas took because it was that quiet and b) once Liverpool announced they accepted our bid for Guthrie he was signed later that day - so they don’t necessarily have to take this long at all!
Look at the situation with Bassong - none of us were impatient at waiting for him to sign, he came to us on trial for a week, impressed us - once he went back, the club obviously decided they wanted to sign him, a fee was agreed, and Bassong himself clearly wants to come here because he’s been playing for us in friendlies! So why then has it not been officially announced? The official website has only stated that the deal is yet to be officially completed!
The Coloccini deal as well, up until recently you could say that it was dragging on because of Deportivo playing up, but if the fee was agreed verbally a week ago, how has it taken this long to get it in writing, let alone tie it up.
I know we’re not privy to the inner workings of the club, but as far as I can see we’ve got a few people (charged with handling player recruitment) earning 7 figure salaries who don’t seem to be able to wrap up first team transfers within a sensible time frame. This is the transfer window after all, what’s taking them so long? Surely this should be their priority!

You get people complaining about no signings, then you get people complaining about the length of time it takes with the signings.
Point is, would you rather have a LITTLE patience and atleast sign players, or have no players? make your mind up. Ive got as much patience in the world, so long as we are making progress on the signings, which we are.
50 sas // Aug 7, 2008 at 14:43
Matt Lacey - you’re wrong about Guthrie. When the rumours about Milner to Liverpool came out, he was quoted as saying he was going to Newcastle. 2/3 weeks later he was signed.
You’re also wrong about Bassong, see posts above.
“if the fee was agreed verbally a week ago, how has it taken this long to get it in writing, let alone tie it up”
No idea, why blame NUFC though?
“This is the transfer window after all, what’s taking them so long? Surely this should be their priority!”
How exactly do you think transfers work? Do you think it’s like buying a pint of milk in a supermarket or something? What if the other club doesn’t want to sell? What if the other club doesn’t want to sell until they get a replacement in? What if the other club who needs to get a replacement is being delayed by another club who don’t want to sell? What if the other club are delaying as long as possible in the hope another club comes in to spark a bidding war? Have you thought this through at all? Better than exercising the brain for a minute, blame the club, the board, Ashley, Wise etc.
Is there any evidence that the club has been dragging it’s heels? No.

54 Faustino // Aug 7, 2008 at 15:04
Matt - I appreciate you have formed a good argument and it MAY be true. But, with all due respect, as with everything the doomsayers latch onto [I dont recognise you, not sure your a regualr in that gang :)] it’s based on a total lack of fact.
You don’t know what’s going on, therefore everything you or anyone else says [including the press] is pure and utter conjecture. They COULD be taking ages and messing things up but in equal mesaure they MIGHT not . Wise MAY be the problem and KK and Wise MIGHT not get along but they MIGHT. Vetere and Jimenez are MAYBE taking the piss and COULD be feeding Sp*rs but then they MAY be working really hard to rescue a squad and club that quite franky was an emabrassment last season.
All those big words are the problem here and tbh the only sources we have to maybe change them into ‘definites’ are so spurious that you wouldn’t believe them if they we’re telling you your own birthday.
That said, I for one believe in the things that I know for certain which are all the points I listed in the post above and tbh they explain everything pretty well. But most of all they explain things without doing the unthinkable imo, which is suggesting my own club, that I love, is a f*cking joke.

faustino and chris F…………this is a blog and we can all say what we want - along the lines of the footballing nature of our club etc. just cos many of us have dif views does not mean we are either right or wrong. i think we have been pathetic in the window, thats my view and i stick to it. in the same way negative opinions drive you mad, your constant everything is rosey stuff might drive others mad. the thing is though, thats your option and you of course can have it, pls dont knock me and others for saying ours - afterall, who is to say your view is accurate. I rememeber faustino at the end of the season mentioning loads of fancy names he wanted etc, now that its obvious that we are mostly looking in the bargin basement area where are the big names now? it is not fair to knock others for their views. In the same way its not fair to expect anthing from our team this season other than survival judging by the players and money we are spending. The only thing that is making me smile at the minute is the fact that blackburn are imploading so that should be one less rival to worry about now and that i think it should be 6 points next season off them alone.
62 Matt Lacey // Aug 7, 2008 at 15:45
harrier - the latest news piece I’ve seen that mentions Bassong is this one - http://www.nufc.premiumtv.co.uk/page/NewsDetail/0,,10278~1356610,00.html - which states that he is set to complete his move in the next couple of days (that was last week). If I’ve missed something then I apologise, clearly the move is going to happen, if it hasn’t yet, because the admins for the site have given him a profile (along with a couple of reserves who played in the friendlies) but I can’t find much evidence that it’s set in stone.
sas - I know that Guthrie stated he was going to move to Newcastle beforehand, evidently the club had shown interest and the player wanted to come by then but my point is that once the negotiations were finished, the medical and contract signing was done very quickly.
Surely if the negotiations for Coloccini’s transfer are finished (supposedly personal terms and the transfer fee were agreed ages ago, and negotations have been going on for about 3 months) then why is it taking this long to seal the deal?
I’m not accusing any individual of anything or blaming anyone, but surely its in the club’s best interest to bring the player into the team sooner rather than later so he can train with his new teammates and get him playing games. If it is Deportivo stalling things, waiting for replacements etc then why are we being held to ransom when we’ve got a supposedly excellent dealmaker in Tony Jimenez?
I know transfers aren’t a straightforward business but I’m pretty sure Mike Ashley took a lot less time than this to buy the club in the first place, and I’d argue that was a much more complicated deal.
Like I said, I’m not looking to blame anyone, I’m not angry, I’m not calling for the board’s collective head, and I’ll quite happily be quiet once the transfer window is over and we can get down to watching some football. It would just be more reassuring to know that the recruitment team is handling their job as enthusiastically as KK is handling his - and indeed that the recruitment team and KK are even on the same wavelength. Everything coming out of the club is so cryptic, how do they expect a fanbase as fiercely passionate and excitable as us to not ask questions?

A think we need more than 4 signings plus we need to get rid of the dead wood like , geremi , smith , faye , viduka , ameobi , duff , cacapa and if arsenal come in for Shay Given with a fee around 5mil a would take it, a prefer Harper and Krul.
Since Shay got that stomach injury against West Ham he has never been the same player. Shay was to blame for the 1st goal against PSV he didnt get enough distance on his punch. Sorry but a think Shay Given is finished, Dont get me wrong he has been Newcastle’s best goalie for the past 10 years but time to move on.

hang fire boys! Everythings in place, cant remember who said it but lets not allow this drag on to over shadow the fact that we’re about to sign one of the best central defenders around at the moment, all his atributes point to a successfull time in the premiership! For those who havent seen him play, i think you’ll be pleasantly surprised!
Smith looks like he could be on his way to everton - which for me is as good news as colo signing! This will mean we’ll get a new striker, we’ve got money to spend (as long as its in the right areas and right for the club) and if the past is anything to go buy, keegan doesnt buy cr&P! so im expecting a pretty good striker come the start of the season - if wise/jiminez have any input on the matter i’d expect Gomis - granted he didnt have a good tournament, but who in the french team did, reminded me of england at acompetitive tournament
he said we want another 2-3 players - of the same quality as guti and guthrie- happy days boys! Doesnt else think that this is as good as its been at NUFC for quite some time? keep the faith, the dead wood is being shifted and the new faces are arriving with promise…….
one last thing, who’s responsible for supplying colo with the bag of gwan he’s clearly been smoking proir to his profile pic on the sky sports website????? own up!!
65 clinta // Aug 7, 2008 at 15:50
how good really is this guy for £10m? some fear he’ll be snapped up by the spurs type clubs if we don’t get the deal done soon, were there even any other clubs after him? you’d think there was a bidding war at that price?
if he is such a good prospect i also wonder why most of his time spent at deportivo he was loaned out elsewhere? normally not what you do with your better players is it?
food for thought, anyone have a theory on these questions of mine?
66 Chris F // Aug 7, 2008 at 16:00
how can he get snapped up by anyone else when our contract has been signed and sealed with depor?
i’m not pretending everything is rosey at all, to the guy who said i was, i’m just being patient, and realistic.
we were never going to go out and buy 6 players in a week, so far we’ve brought in 4 good quality players, and have more than 3 weeks left in the transfer window.
since the transfer window was implemented, the vast majority of deals have always been made in the last one or two weeks of it, because selling clubs try to hang on for the best deal they can get, and an approaching deadline will always make buying clubs more anxious, which increases the chances of them raising their offers, etc.
it’s just the way it is.
pissing and moaning just because we haven’t had confirmation from the club about coloccini isn’t going to change anything, he’ll be signed when he’s signed, all the wheels are in motion, fees between the clubs negotiated and sealed, it’s just a matter of time.
mass paranoia doesn’t aid anyone, it just reinforces the media stereotype of our fanbase that we’re a bunch of fickle idiots who have insane expectations.
all i’m saying is be a bit more realistic and patient, it won’t kill you.
67 Chris F // Aug 7, 2008 at 16:03
Clinta, he never spent any time on loan anywhere while at deportivo, it was while he was at milan that he was loaned out to several clubs when he was younger.
he signed for milan when he was 17/18, was loaned out back to an argentinian club, then played for 3 primera liga sides, including Atletico Madrid) before being sold to Depor.
The guy is a quality centre half, there’s no doubt about it. Just have to hope he settles quickly.

Craig - totally and utterly agree mate everyone is allowed their own opinion and I would never deny you that.
But over the past week or two the opinions have become steadfast fact in a lot of peoples minds which is irritating to say the least. A lack of patience and feeling uncomfortable have lead for people insulting the club and it’s staff as if what they’ve heard is gospel. I heard less guff when we KNEW Shepherd and Hall had insulted us in the toongate.
I may have had a list at the end of the season but if you check my posts throughout the whole summer I told you we wouldn’t get them. Cos I understands where the club is at innit. It’s not about how much you spend anyway, it’s what you spend it on. As I have full confidence Spurs are about to show us tbh. We’re the experts in spending hods of cash for zip improvement and tbh what they’re doing down there rings a few bells for me.

I said I dont know much about Gomis and you decide to dig into me for it, whats your point? Are you still swimming in the little pool?
I looked at the record of Gomis and his career has not been one of consistent great form, it was only last season that he really acheived much and I dont like the idea of the club buying strikers on the basis of one good season.

i dont understand why transfers take as long as they do any way surely its just agreeing a fee over the phone which should take a max of a couple of hours then agreeing fee withplayer then medical then sign all documents which cant take that long
74 Chris F // Aug 7, 2008 at 17:57
yes, that’s right, buying a player for millions of pounds is just like ordering a curry.
75 gordond // Aug 7, 2008 at 18:03

Michael (post 63) I doubt we’ll be getting rid of any of the “dead wood†except Amoebi.
It seemed like Geremi had a good game against PSV and he’s useful for his experience and character to have around as at least a squad member, Viduka – though I wasn’t keen on signing him at first – is very important to us when he’s fit…although slow he makes things happen around him up front through his control and hold up play, Duff is looking far sharper than he ever has before for us…etc etc etc. And though Smith has been awful, I hope he turns it around and - besides – KK has said he doesn’t want to sell.
Probably just Amoebi to go.
I think we’ll get Coloccini plus a lb and possibly a mf (which we need). Hope we get a striker too but I’m not banking on that.
p.s – my brother once suggested that Hannibal Lecter as a centre back could be useful!

Bad news Nicky Shorey has just signed for Aston Villa i also read we were after former Ajax,Roma and Bayern Munich defender Samuel Kuffour he would be a good signing
79 Toon Raghav // Aug 7, 2008 at 18:47
its taking so long bcoz MA is broke,he does not have £1M leave alone £10M .Hope some one provides him wid da money & this transfer deal gets completed.Everton should take MA wid them too.
80 Gareth // Aug 7, 2008 at 19:09
For those moaning on and on and on and on about how long we’re taking to complete deals; yeah, cos, for example, Andy Johnson to Fulham didn’t take weeks to complete did it? Oh wait, it did…
It could be taking a long time for any number of legitimate reasons, my money being on Depor’s president being an awkward pain in the backside…

Kuffour is crap..has been for the past few seasons.. hope smith is still leaving…i really do…my only wish for this transfer window…besides essien, ribery and zlatan
84 micepie // Aug 7, 2008 at 20:25
By the way, I don’t think Smith will be leaving us but I see from a few posts that some Everton fans would be quite pleased if they got him!
IRON BALLS McGINTY 08.07.08 at 3:15 pm GET HIM SIGNED UP,HIS ATTITUDE TO HIS TEAM IS A LOT BETTER THAN A CERTAIN VICTOR ANICHEBE AND THE PRICES QUOTED ARE A BARGAIN,MOYES WILL PUT HIM RIGHT
2 gooner get ya 08.07.08 at 3:21 pm good 4 smith and everton, he’s a quality player who’ll always give 110 per cent but he must be played as a striker then every1 will see the class alan smith of a couple of seasons ago
4 Blue Evertonian 08.07.08 at 3:28 pm I have ALWAYS rated Smith. He has the right spirit and all he needs is team mates like he will have at Everton and a Manager like Moyes to bring out the best in him yet again. Come on Alan …. prove em wrong!!

92 One Foot Wonders F.C. // Aug 8, 2008 at 6:47
through all of this, people have been moaning(as usual) about how long this has taken, and are so quick to slag off our recruitment team (which so far in the last 8 months has done exceptionally well considering our position this time last year).
Yet no-one has stopped to think that maybe it’s because agents are trying to install bonuses ect.. and the dreaded minimum release clause (which if it takes a bit more bargaining by our team to make sure the fine print of the contract is suited to us then GREAT!).
Lets face it we don’t want to be in the same position that we’ve been in with Owen and Martins where our prized possessions can walk away at a small profit or even a loss.
WELL DONE TO ALL AT THE CLUB INVOLVED!!
93 tyneside tommo // Aug 8, 2008 at 7:25
Big Willie. I apologise for ever doubting you over Smith. Looks like you were spot on.
94 John B // Aug 8, 2008 at 10:57
Guys It was not Gomiz. I thought we already cleared that up. He is a promising 17 yr old English trialist at Newcastle.
Not good hysteria, Gomiz would cost nearly ten milllion. Keegan has not indicated that he will be bringing in a striker at all, let alone make a striker our most expensive signing of the summer.
