Newcastle Reported Closer To Derdiyok Deal

2:58 pm, Friday, August 8th, 2008 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 146 Comments

Kevin Keegan has said he is fairly confident of announcing a couple of new arrivals before the transfer window closes at the end of the month.

Eren Derdiyok – could be great signing for Newcastle

One of them is obviously Deportivo’s Fabricio Coloccini, who is reported to be on Tyneside today, and we hope he’s undergoing a medical at the club.

However, there are now renewed reports that the other player could be 20 year-old Swiss Striker Eren Derdiyok, who seems to have been a bit of a favorite with readers on our site.

He certainly looked the part in Euro08, for somebody who has only just turned 20 years old.

That’s the age James Milner and Steven Taylor were 30 months ago, just so you have an idea of just how young the boy is.

The young  striker has reportedly been at the top of Keegan’s list all summer, but it’s difficult to know exactly who is on that list, although we think Eren would be a tremendous buy for the club.

Reports suggest that Newcastle have kept in constant touch with Derdiyok’s agent, trying to ascertain the minimum price Basel would accept for the player, and they will soon be putting in their final bid.

But a few weeks ago it looked like he may have been going to Fenerbahce, so we’re not sure how true that really is.

The earlier news was that we were willing to offer £3M, but FC Basel wanted £6M, so surely we can reach something in between. Let’s cut the difference and make it £4.5M – and its’ a deal!

Keegan told reporters today:

“You don’t get all the players you want, and that includes the very top sides. It’s the same for everybody.”

“But I’m sure in the next two weeks we will see at least two signings coming in – that’s my feeling.”

“Nothing’s 100 per cent, however, and we’re all looking at the same players. They are all good players, and because of that a lot of clubs want them.”

It appears that Keegan wants Derdiyok at Newcastle, and with Fenerbehce now out of the running, the way seems clear for Newcastle to increase their bid and reach an agreement with FC Basel.

The terms Newcastle will offer the youngster will be no problem, and so it could well be that Newcastle will eventually get Eren at the club.

We certainly hope so.

Comments welcome.

Very good buy .. I’ve a feeling this is in the bag .. we still need to get rid of Smith and get another striker as well .. with more experience..

  • 7 AdamCF // Aug 8, 2008 at 3:13 PM

If they stopped paying Shola, would he leave?

  • 8 Micky Toon // Aug 8, 2008 at 3:13 PM

Can anyone tell me who this llunga guy who we are linked with is? All I know is that he’s an African defender from Toulouse.

  • 10 Colo's Curly Locks // Aug 8, 2008 at 3:14 PM

think he must be close to signing if were willing to let smith go, since were already so short on numbers

  • 11 kajman // Aug 8, 2008 at 3:14 PM

lets get coloccini in first then ..i’ll buy bigwilly a big drink..

  • 12 Davies // Aug 8, 2008 at 3:15 PM

I won’t get my hopes up, but I have to admit, he’d be a very good buy.

  • 14 sirjasontoon // Aug 8, 2008 at 3:15 PM

I take this with a pinch of salt..still waiting for the “24 hour transfer”Keegan was on about last thursday..loop loop loop loop.

    Anyone got this lads stats?

  • 15 benji1892 // Aug 8, 2008 at 3:21 PM

He would be a great signing indeed.
I watched him play in FC Basels Champions League Qualifier against IFK Göteborg on Wednesday (whilst watching NUFC take on PSV as well of course) and he played very well indeed. He had a couple of decent shots on goal and made an assist.
Let’s get him signed up quickly though, meaning before Basel have qualified for the Champions League …

  • 17 Spyro // Aug 8, 2008 at 3:24 PM

harrier i have noticed that you LIVE on newsnow. Every time an article comes out you paste it up within seconds lol

    Anyway, those stats are encouraging

  • 18 toonfan1 // Aug 8, 2008 at 3:24 PM

habib beye has fantastic stats compared to faye taylor and the crapaca

  • 19 kajman // Aug 8, 2008 at 3:25 PM

ssn..saying we have signed a 17 yr old

  • 20 domtoon // Aug 8, 2008 at 3:26 PM

If we sign him next, how much will things have turned around?

I’m hoping, HOPING MA and KK are laughing off the typical Geordie pessimism (and let’s face it, who can blame us since the sacking of SBR??!) and actually have some gems in store for us.

This player, please maybe another 2, and I will be confident of a mid-table end of result. Hell, we may even hit the 9th position or better…

  • 21 harrier // Aug 8, 2008 at 3:26 PM

haha yeah – i don’t paste everything, just stuff i find interesting that other might not be aware of – and mostly to start discussion on said articles – in this case, he seems very attacking for a center back, which is good, and his numbers are quite comparable to beye’s as far as tackling goes. hopefully we won’t leave him too exposed, and be able to keep the ball in our posession

  • 22 Karl - Fenham Hustler // Aug 8, 2008 at 3:27 PM

harrier – i think that shows how class beye is and how good taylor could be, once teamed up with coloccini

  • 23 kajman // Aug 8, 2008 at 3:27 PM

    from southhampton…after he was released

  • 24 magsie // Aug 8, 2008 at 3:28 PM

Since we seem to be pairing up nationalities at the minute, if this ones true then i would like to get that other swiss lad “skelberg? summick like that” as he has had good reports in the press plus he actualy supports the toon! which in my opinion is a factor we`ve been missing for years, not just coming for the xtra cash but because you want to play for the club!

  • 25 ELFER // Aug 8, 2008 at 3:28 PM

Hope KK can insert some confidence in derdiyok, becouse at the moment (first 5 games in switzerland) he didn’t impress me that much…

But I’m a fan of him and I think he will be a class striker if he takes one step further and train hard! KK can form this talent, for sure!

  • 26 harrier // Aug 8, 2008 at 3:29 PM

coloccini almost made more tackles than faye and taylor combined :o

  • 27 kajman // Aug 8, 2008 at 3:29 PM

harrier still not signed yet ..though..looking good for today if all whats been reported ..hee’s hoping

  • 28 Tom // Aug 8, 2008 at 3:30 PM

With Coloccini, Derdiyok and a creative mid, I think the squad might have the ability to push for the lower European places.

The stats they used in that survey must have been painstakingly recorded!!

  • 29 harrier // Aug 8, 2008 at 3:30 PM

magsie – if this were true we would go after inler who is swiss.

  • 30 Marty // Aug 8, 2008 at 3:31 PM

This guy looked the part in the euros, get him signed up at once.
Young strong n very quick, just what we need to excite the fans.
Oba n Eren would have defences shittin themselves.

  • 31 harrier // Aug 8, 2008 at 3:31 PM

yes tom – it means someone had to watch all of our games with big sam at the helm :X

  • 32 Colo's Curly Locks // Aug 8, 2008 at 3:31 PM

the 17 year old southampton player was at the psv match

  • 33 michael // Aug 8, 2008 at 3:31 PM

What a buy he would be i liked in him in the euro’s , Derdiyok martins and owen theres are strikers sorted. DITCH! the likes of Smith Ameobi and viduka ,give Carroll his chance he is miles better than ameobi and smith put together.

  • 34 mushy // Aug 8, 2008 at 3:32 PM

Were there any other clues from SSN re the 17 year old?

  • 35 Skunkie Skunker // Aug 8, 2008 at 3:32 PM

This is rubbish about Derdiyok because we are signing Jose Moutinho. He is at the Jesmond Dene hotel as we speak with Fabricio Coloccini.

  • 36 Spyro // Aug 8, 2008 at 3:32 PM

i dont see taylors stats as particularly encouraging myself.

He has played the most minutes and has only made 42 tackles. Out of those 42 he has won just over half. Faye has played around 16 hours less, yet he has made more tackles and won a higher percentage of them.

  • 37 GoesseN // Aug 8, 2008 at 3:32 PM

yeh mate this article is just another repeat, those things he supposedly said “today” have been repeated word for word in different magazines and newspapers and websites for weeks. nothing new, try looking on the Official Website Yourself… they actually tell you who all the papers are linking us to.

  • 38 harrier // Aug 8, 2008 at 3:33 PM

colo’s curly locks – who was at psv – derdiyok? or coloccini?

  • 39 Stardust // Aug 8, 2008 at 3:33 PM

Nice link Harrier- as suspected Taylors stats are the worst when you look pro rata at minutes on the pitch – cant really compare Coloccinis as he was in a diff league

  • 40 scott9 // Aug 8, 2008 at 3:33 PM

i dont no if i can see this been true but u never no anyway we need to get rid of smith and ameobi well we mayaswell just get rid of him he a waste of space derdyok wud be great back up for viduka if we got him we then just need a left back and a midfielder.

  • 41 scottish mag // Aug 8, 2008 at 3:33 PM

kajman where cos there is nothing on the site about any 17 yo signing

  • 42 Ian-first one!! // Aug 8, 2008 at 3:33 PM

I think we should go for Cisse, you know what you are getting with Cisse, goals every single year.

Carroll is already sitting like a spare part and the striker who comes in has to be arrogant enough to think he is as good or better than Martins or Owen.

Imagine a young player half way through the season when everything is still alive having to take the place of an on from Owen, Martins or Viduka-no pressure then, in front of our crowds.

  • 43 Terry Mac's Crossword // Aug 8, 2008 at 3:34 PM

the young southapton player. black lad with dreadlocks

  • 46 Faustino // Aug 8, 2008 at 3:40 PM

Spyro etc. – Coloccini conceding 18 fouls in 38 games is just unbelievable for a centre back.

Always a little questionable Opta as it reckons they all pretty much make an avg. of 2 tackles a game. Which is surely not right?

  • 47 normski1930z // Aug 8, 2008 at 3:41 PM

would still like us to try and get pobgreneyak first then if that fails then go for this youngun…

  • 48 Spyro // Aug 8, 2008 at 3:45 PM

Your right Faustino, that does look a bit iffy, im sure Coloccini is quite prone to the odd lash out from time to time

Cacapa’s stats also look very poor

  • 49 wils2603 // Aug 8, 2008 at 3:46 PM

  • 54 Horace Batchelor // Aug 8, 2008 at 3:50 PM

We expect a big name signing and what do we get, 17 year old NILE RANGER from Southampton :D

  • 55 Ian-first one!! // Aug 8, 2008 at 3:51 PM

personally I think we have enough young strikers, we already have Carroll, Baheng and Zamblera none of which have been tried properly in these friendlies, bringing in another young player is pushing our luck with strikers.

in my opinion we have a very serious fitness problem with strikers and the whole team relies on us scoring, I would only want to see a 25-28 year old proven reliable score very year striker with a good hit rate.

I think Keegan has made the team better but i think we should take no chances, we should have bought Kitson as he was cheap and is a reliable goalscorer, but Cisse is at the right price, I dont see anyone else at the moment.

Harrier : Yes true and i agree in a way but Inler is in the slightly higher calibre range at the minute and he`s looking for a champs league club so i believe. Also he doesnt support the toon like Skjelbred does. Yep found out how to spell it lol

  • 62 Black and White Blood // Aug 8, 2008 at 3:53 PM

  • 69 Faustino // Aug 8, 2008 at 4:00 PM

Spyro – I think the best thing about Coloccinis stats is the low number of headed clearances in realtion to high pass completion stats. Means he’s keeping the ball and passing it out to feet.

A bit of distribution instead of just heading back up field in hope. God I hope our lot don’t get freaked out by that.

  • 70 harrier // Aug 8, 2008 at 4:00 PM

Tom – i had enough trouble watching those games for the first time, and i am a fan :|

magsie – true but skjelbred is norwegian, and id rather inler :D

also – southampton have a very good youth record with players coming from their ranks such as kevin keegan and alan shearer :D

  • 73 harrier // Aug 8, 2008 at 4:01 PM

i actually i just realised, keegan and shearer both started their careers at southampton and ended their careers and nufc. perhaps this means shearer IS destined to manage us after keegan :D

  • 75 The Entertainers // Aug 8, 2008 at 4:02 PM

Those stats do look very encouraging and does show how well Beye played.

I agree Taylors were disappointing and stood him out to be a kick and clear it type of defender, not much culture or presence in his stats. However i’m a big fan, he has time on his side and plays with passion, that with promise is good enough for me…..for now!

However, the news is better on Obafemi Martins, who has trained and is expected to play some part in what will be his runout since 45 minutes at Hartlepool.

There’s been some mention of a run out for a mystery trialist from Portuguese side Boavista (who are in the clarts after being relegated over a match-fixing scandal).

We’re unsure whether a repeat of the Bassong/Doncaster scenario is on the cards, but there have been two trialists at the club this week – and both scored in a training ground friendly in front of a watching Kevin Keegan.

Just went onto the SkySports website to look at the mention of the transfer and wondering if there’s anything worth reading into the fact that they’ve given both Ameobi and Gutierrez the squad number 23?
Also the only positive thing people seem to have to say about Smith is that he gives 100% in every game. Surely this is something that any player from the reserves or youth team would do if offered the chance of a first team place? I know our squad is tiny, but couldn’t the transfer fee and massive wages be put to better use? Just a thought

Eric and Fabrico would be good addition to our club. However we still have not addressed our major weakness, a creative midfielder. Our midfield was awful last year and our results reflected that. If you look at all the big clubs their best player are their midfielders.

  • 107 Rubber Guard // Aug 8, 2008 at 4:32 PM

I’m happy with Coco, Bassong, Beye and Faye. The jury is still out on Enrique though and I’ve made my opinion on Taylor quite clear. Edgar and Kadar will be good cover too. Personally I feel if we’re going to get no where in the Premiership I’d rather it be with young kids trying their best on lower wages than injury prone has beens on telephone figure salaries.

Get Derdiyok, Inler, Moutinho, Burdisso and get rid of Ameobi, Butt, Smith, Barton and more controversially EMO. EMO wont accept a cut even though he is not the player he once was – the offer from Spuds should be taken or if not he will do a Bosman on us.

  • 115 Horace Batchelor // Aug 8, 2008 at 5:29 PM

Eric and Fabrico would be good addition to our club.

    Who’s Eric???

  • 116 gorskino10 // Aug 8, 2008 at 5:50 PM

Graeme “Derdiyok, Inler, Moutinho, Burdisso” would cost 4.5+5+16+6= 31.5mill do you think we have that sort of money.
I would go for Derdiyok(or Paquet) ,Skejebred costing less that 10mill.
That guy in the crowd was not Gomez i swear it was that young trialist Nile Ranger from Southampton??

  • 117 normski1930z // Aug 8, 2008 at 5:57 PM

inler would be closer to 8 million than 5 million if am honest i am sure i read somewhere that his buy out clause is 6.8mill not 5….

  • 118 Tom // Aug 8, 2008 at 5:57 PM

It would appear that Mr Dreads was in fact Nile Ranger. Graeme, you’ll probably have to pick one of either Inler or Moutinho mate! Lol.

I’d be happy with Derdiyok, Inler/Moutinho/Skjelbred and a left back personally! :)

  • 119 JP from The Rock of Gibraltar // Aug 8, 2008 at 6:02 PM

That Nile Ranger kid looks promising. Tall, strong and from what I have heard he knows where the goal is.

  • 120 JP from The Rock of Gibraltar // Aug 8, 2008 at 6:03 PM

    Is he a Brit??

  • 121 JP from The Rock of Gibraltar // Aug 8, 2008 at 6:05 PM

Hey whats happened with our ‘New Rooney’?? Aaron Spear ????? No word of him since his mum spoke about his son’s desire to join us.

  • 122 Obafan // Aug 8, 2008 at 6:15 PM

I would love Derdiyok at NUFC, young and hard working striker who also can create chances for our other strikers. Perhaps his own scoring record is not that spectacular, but if he is able to let others score then I don’t bother. He is young so can wwork hard on his finishing.

If we sign Derdiyok and then a very good creative CAM; I would be content. If possible add another good LB to the squad and we will be sorted for the next season. The LB is also very important cause Enrique seems not to learn from his mistakes when he defends very stupid.

Oh yes and hopefully we get rid of SMith; I would really not care if he scored 10x for Everton; I just don’t like him and he is a total waste of space.

  • 123 GraemeR // Aug 8, 2008 at 6:24 PM

I do worry that KK is sticking with the likes of Barton, Smith and Ameobi – they have not performed for some time, are on huge wages and therefore sohuld be shown the door. As for EMO he should either sign a new contract or go in this window – not as a free agent in the next. If we fail to get him signed in this window he can negotiote a Bosman in the next (JAN !!)

  • 124 GraemeR // Aug 8, 2008 at 6:36 PM

    EMO (12million), Emre (4.5), Roz (2.5), Smith (3), Barton (4), Butt (1), Ameobi (2.5) – thats a fair old chunk of it.
It all depends on what end of the table Ashers wants to have fun at.

  • 125 Ian-first one!! // Aug 8, 2008 at 6:43 PM

Owen going to spurs for £12m?

That would be a good price if we could find a decent replacement.

  • 126 Johnny_Toon // Aug 8, 2008 at 6:46 PM

“Very good buy .. I’ve a feeling this is in the bag”

What?? Im sorry but this article is nothing more than speculation based on interest we’ve shown in this player from a couple of weeks ago. There is nothing new in the way of comments from NUFC officials, you suggest a bid of £4.5mil for the sake of mathematics? Articles need fact. This could have been written out of thin air, what we need to hear is factual news on transfers, not imaginative speculation based on how popular he is on a bloggers website, thats not going to make any difference as to whether or not we sign him.

Ive been following this site for a bit, very impressed and I like the quick turnover of stories, Id be a lot happier if this one had more substance though.

  • 127 Toon1978 // Aug 8, 2008 at 6:51 PM

Just watched North east news, they have mentioned Young leaving the Boro and Martins being back in the team but nothing about Colocinni.

  • 128 Campo67 // Aug 8, 2008 at 6:55 PM

the mystery trialist is apparently a bloke called Araujo – central defender, aged 20 from boavista. thats what i have heard and read

  • 129 Tom // Aug 8, 2008 at 6:57 PM

Why get rid of Butt!? The guy works hard and plays well! Even if he is getting on a bit, I’d still have him as a really useful squad player!

How many times can they say the same things about Coloccini Toon1978? Lol. “Coloccini is in Newcastle today for a medical and is expected to sign later” gets a bit repetitive after a while! The guy is signing for us, there is absolutely no doubt about that, and the club are holding that back for some reason. Maybe they are hoping to do a double signing and reveal them all at once, who knows!! I hope so! Coloccini and Derdiyok, how great would that be! :) Its rather unlikely to be Gomis, now that it turns out that Mr Dreads was probably Nile Ranger!

  • 130 Tom // Aug 8, 2008 at 6:59 PM

This is the guy alot of people think the mystery trialist is!

  • 131 normski1930z // Aug 8, 2008 at 7:02 PM

ideal two/three signings for me as things stand would be colo/pobgreneyak/warnock that would make things in this household alot more chilled instead of me walking around like a bear with a sore boiler….

  • 132 Johnny_Toon // Aug 8, 2008 at 7:42 PM

Like a bit more evidence that the trialist is Araujo – does this info just fall from the sky?

  • 133 MrJay // Aug 8, 2008 at 7:49 PM

Collucini defo had medical this morning. Already posted about this but believe me he is here, he is signing and I expect it to be a done deal by now. When KK reveals all who knows but there was a second player having medical too, just not sure who for, us or the scum!!!

  • 134 nufc supporter // Aug 8, 2008 at 7:56 PM

  • 138 WIGAZ // Aug 8, 2008 at 8:54 PM

U for real skunky? or you just takin the piss? i’d be happy with Derdi like as he’s still young & can get a lot better! he could also learn a lot from dukes about how to hold up & improve his touch then just step in & take his place! shame he’s not really prolific but still think he’d be a good buy! hope we see 2 new signings this weekendas it would give them a week to settle in & get to know the lads b4 the big kick off!

  • 139 adam // Aug 8, 2008 at 9:41 PM

Skunkie Skunker are you telling the truth about moutinho and collichini and ify ou ae telling the truth how do you no

  • 140 welshgeordie // Aug 8, 2008 at 9:43 PM

hope we sign him he’s a up nd coming youngster his name would suit well in the premier league nd on the back of a black nd white shirt.

  • 141 my only son // Aug 8, 2008 at 11:13 PM

just to give you an idea how old 20 years is its 1 year x 20!! or to put it simply.. i was 20.. 96 months ago! ok

  • 142 Jerry McGuire // Aug 9, 2008 at 6:35 AM

Hmm, my team for this coming season:

    Silvestre Coloccini Taylor Beye
    Duff Guthrie Bullard Spiderman
    Viduka Owen

Subs: Bassong, Butt, Milner, Oba, Harper

    IN: Coloccini, Silvestre, Bullard, Derdiyok

OUT: Ameobi and that’s all. Keep others for rotational use. We lack of depth in squad.

  • 143 hitman // Aug 9, 2008 at 8:48 AM

jerry silvestre will never come to the club because of barton

  • 144 Geordie Nick // Aug 9, 2008 at 9:18 AM

jerry- why hav silvestre at RB and beye at LB?

  • 145 WIGAZ // Aug 9, 2008 at 9:23 AM

agree that silvestre would be good buy to play LB or CB but he will not come! Dabo is like his best m8! & he openly critcised the toon for not sacking barton!

  • 146 roy morten79(norway) // Aug 9, 2008 at 9:54 AM
