Newcastle Reported Target Ilunga Wants England Chance

9:11 pm, Friday, August 8th, 2008 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 47 Comments

We reported a couple of days ago that there were reports in France that Toulouse left back Herita Ilunga is a target for Newcastle United.

Herita Ilunga - wish is to play imn Premier League

And since then, the Toulouse defender Ilunga has told that he would love the chance to play in England.

We still need a left back, and we’re not going to get Nicky Shorey, who moved to Aston Villa yesterday.

Ilunga would come at a fairly  low price, estimated to be around £2M, and he would probably be a squad player, and would need to fight it out with youngster Enrique for the left back starting position.

But if Herita is anything like the other Africans we have at the moment at Newcastle, he’ll be worth getting.

Ilunga told

“Toulouse understand my wish,” “It is to play in the Premiership, to play in the best league is everyone’s dream.”

“I also need to think about my family, I have to provide for them like all Africans do when they make it.”

“However, I want to leave in good spirits with their blessing, so hopefully they are talking and it will be fine, I think.”

“I never cause trouble so my bosses will understand.”

Once we get this Coloccini marathon transfer completed, the next player in should probably be a left back, although reports are saying that young Swiss striker Eren Derdiyok  could be the next one through the door.

That would be OK with us.

Comments welcome.

    Good for him.

  • 2 Dan13 // Aug 8, 2008 at 9:15 PM

    he looks dead

  • 3 Rock // Aug 8, 2008 at 9:15 PM

Not sure if it would be worth getting this player. We really need to get better or just as good as we have now to fight for places.

  • 4 51times // Aug 8, 2008 at 9:17 PM

Not a natural left-back and he’s probably fairly average.

  • 5 Dan13 // Aug 8, 2008 at 9:18 PM

    He any good?

  • 6 beye the great // Aug 8, 2008 at 9:19 PM

hope he is good though i read anoter article that said he was only 2 choice at toulousse dont know how true it is but if it is he cant be very good after a lb i think we need a cm who can create i would like eithsr nuri sahin or pedretti or if possible moutinho
amd off topic it says on wikipedia aaron spears is a newcastle player and also just wondering is bassong a player as it was confirmed by his old club but not by newcastle or ssn

  • 7 AngerOfTheNorth // Aug 8, 2008 at 9:20 PM

    Off topic, but hey…

Sir Bobby doesn’t sound like he has too long. I don’t have to say how much he’s done for the club and for England, so I was thinking that the last thing we could do, as the fans, is to get him to the million before he goes…

on another note the times says micheal johnson wants to leave man city, with everton, villa and nufc interested.

interesting to what kind of fee city want if they do sell him.

ilunga is nowt special from what ive seen but we are getting desperate for another lb and enrique seems to have gone backwards in pre season.

  • 10 Matt // Aug 8, 2008 at 9:26 PM

Anyone actually know anything concrete about this guy?

Seriously why the hell do papers have to have some sort of descriptor all the time like ‘Under fire’. Since when has Kevin been under fire?

  • 11 Tom_Toon // Aug 8, 2008 at 9:27 PM

    Never sen Ilunga.

  • 12 geordiewannabefromwales // Aug 8, 2008 at 9:28 PM

not sure bout gettin another african cos we dont need more losses at AC of Nations.

never heard of him really so i cant imagine that hes a decent player 4 us really. if he were surely spurs villa etc would have been linked previously???

  • 13 Waddle's mullet // Aug 8, 2008 at 9:28 PM

He is half decent as long as they don’t attack him on the right side. Ha Ha

    No a chance

  • 14 ChrisL // Aug 8, 2008 at 9:36 PM

Isn’t that the bloke from ‘The Matrix’?

  • 15 kajman // Aug 8, 2008 at 9:37 PM

papers just attack us “ashley -kk “at logger heads kk undre mined…what is it with the press,, you know what we are still suffering from ff erra..?

Lets complete the Coloccini marathon transfer first.

  • 19 kajman // Aug 8, 2008 at 9:40 PM

hrer her ken??? if it not complete by wont happen??

  • 20 matty_g // Aug 8, 2008 at 9:42 PM

I think the coloccini deal is already done. Considering the interview he gave on Canal Depor TV saying his goodbyes and how pleased he was to join Newcastle, think that maybe we might be trying to complete another deal or two before we confirm via

  • 21 magsie // Aug 8, 2008 at 9:46 PM

matty g : i agree wi you m8 theres no way a deal could take this long when things been agreed 4 ages unless they are waiting to anounce a few players at once in my opinion.

  • 22 Steven // Aug 8, 2008 at 9:46 PM

he looks like Geremi in a big way, be that a good thing or a bad thing?

  • 23 matty_g // Aug 8, 2008 at 9:48 PM

Magsie: spot on mate, think about it from a PR perspective, MA will know that theres unrest with the supporters. I f they have the option of tying up a few deals together and announce them all together then your bound to do it.

Then again i could be miles out and really no one of great quality wants to join us. But hey, lets hope its the first one!!!!!

  • 24 john(indian toon) // Aug 8, 2008 at 10:00 PM

he looks evil, get him he’s confidnt

  • 25 Bucks_mag // Aug 8, 2008 at 10:01 PM

don’t want him. Couldn’t get into a toulouse side that was almost relegated, not to mention he wants to leave for 1st team football and we have the bull

  • 26 brian // Aug 8, 2008 at 10:13 PM

It’s rumoured on 365 that we are in advance negotiations with Taiwo and that seems more like the class of player we are after

  • 27 si942 // Aug 8, 2008 at 10:15 PM

When will Coloccini sign on the dotted line anyone know?

  • 28 scott9 // Aug 8, 2008 at 10:20 PM

u got any links to that brian

  • 29 brian // Aug 8, 2008 at 10:24 PM

As said it’s rumours but try the following and go back a few pages – but to be honest it’s probably at least or more reliable than the crap in the papers

  • 30 Mac // Aug 8, 2008 at 10:50 PM

As long as a team tries to improve itself every year the supporters should be happy.
If Colol the curl has signed then taht is 4 players we have signed which have improved us. We’ve got rid of some of our dead wood and drafted in players that look the business. Spider man looks a player,Bassong could be a real Gem but my pick is young Gutherie,I live in Liverpool now and they were not happy when we signed him, everyone one of the lads i work with rate him and now i can see why,he is gonna be our player of the season,he looks the real deal. Sorry had a bit too m uch wine.

  • 31 daiv // Aug 8, 2008 at 10:50 PM

    England or Newcastle? Massive difference.

  • 32 AndyNUFC // Aug 8, 2008 at 10:51 PM

    What about Bassong though, Bucks?

    How old is he?

Think we should just stick Bassong as competition for LB IMO, think we’ve got a fair few defenders.

  • 33 toon up // Aug 8, 2008 at 11:22 PM

I would stick with what we have in defence and sooner see the money spent on attacking flair players…..lets get back to the entertainers eh

  • 34 Rubber Guard // Aug 8, 2008 at 11:26 PM

I’m very much against having numerous Africans playing in our defence, not because I’m racist, far from it, I’m black myself. The problem is the African’s Nation Cup every other year will cause us huge problems when we lose them all for 6 weeks or so in January. A makeshift defence for this period will ruin our season, thats why I’m against having so many African defenders.

  • 35 Tom_Toon // Aug 8, 2008 at 11:35 PM

Beye has retired from international football and if we sign Coloccini our first choice back 4 atm is:

Only Faye will be absent and that is only for a few weeks every 2 years.

If we signed Ilunga it would barely matter as for one i doubt he’d be first choice and secondly Congo are rubbish and wont qualify.

  • 36 toon up // Aug 8, 2008 at 11:38 PM

Warnock is the man we need.

  • 37 mozza // Aug 8, 2008 at 11:40 PM

looks a good back 4 tom just need inler, larson ,cisse-gomis and we’re laughing

  • 38 51times // Aug 8, 2008 at 11:41 PM

toon up – Agreed, though Taiwo would be alright too.

  • 39 AndyNUFC // Aug 9, 2008 at 12:31 AM

Toon up same here, would rather see a striker and an attacking/ central midfielder.

  • 40 m. // Aug 9, 2008 at 1:17 AM

    he looks like geremi

  • 41 nufcazz // Aug 9, 2008 at 1:39 AM

i think Mladen Petric from Borussia Dortmund would be a good buy. he strong and quick and he can take some quality free kicks too. also he can play either forward or attacking mid.

he was interested in a move to the shethole down the road, so thats means any team in the world have a chance.

    what ya think???

  • 42 micepie // Aug 9, 2008 at 3:33 AM

As Tom Toon says, our back 4 (assuming we get Coloccini) will most likely be

Compare that to only a couple or three years ago, where it would have read something like

Surely a vast improvement today and a potentially great defense if we can get the understanding between all 4 strong.

  • 43 Spyro // Aug 9, 2008 at 4:33 AM

Coloccini is already signed, The medical was the final stage to the transfer process, and this took place on Wednesday. This is confirmed by the official deportivo site. NUFC are just not announcing it for some strange reason.

Here is some more information about Coloccini gained form the Depor official site:

    - He has signed a 5yr contract at around 40k a week.

    - Deportivo claim that it was Newcastle United who held up the transfer as they waited on our signature.

    - He continued to train with Depor even though he wasn’t required to, “To maintain the pace”, is his own words (to remain fit for when he joined us as he was probably told he will go straight in to the first team)

    - He joined us for 11.5 million euros (£9,015,812) plus incentives. This includes our participation in a future Teresa Herrera tournament.

    - We paid 15% of the transfer that correspond to the player (Fabricio)

    - He can play in DM but prefers to play at CB as he is more comfortable there.

    - There are no hard feelings between Fabricio and Depor, and they give a glowing review of him, describing him as a hard worker and a true leader of defence.

    - Fabricio gave an emotional press conference on Thursday just before he left Depor as he felt the fans deserved it. This was well recieved by the press and all the journalists applauded him as he left the conference room.

    - He is expected to play in our match against Valencia.

  • 44 Ericles // Aug 9, 2008 at 7:17 AM

Can someone remind me? It was said that a triallist from Boavista was seen at St James on Wednesday and wearing dreadlocks. The only player from Boavista who could fit that description is the 20 year old Nigerian central/defensive midfielder Olufemi. Am I barking up a gum tree here? Is this the bloke? Anymore info anyone?

  • 45 ToonFly // Aug 9, 2008 at 8:19 AM

“I also need to think about my family, I have to provide for them like all Africans do when they make it.”

why, why, why bring the money thing into. I hate it when these players join with statements like “it’s not just about the money!”. That may even have been Collocccini (I’d have to check all the quotes).

I just don’t want to hear that kind of thing when they’re joining/looking at joining us. Maybe I’m just ultra-sensitive after some of the dross we’ve seen grace our pitch over the last few years.

  • 46 Tom // Aug 9, 2008 at 3:07 PM

Ericles, I think the guy with the dreadlocks was ‘Nile Ranger’ a 17 year old striker we recently signed from Southampton, but I’m not sure! The triallist from Boavista is rumoured to be a defender.

Toonfly- Coloccini did indeed say “its not just about the money”.
