Newcastle are set to launch a £7M bid for Glasgow Rangers center-back Carlos Cuellar, after the Scottish club failed to qualify for Europe.
Carlos Cuellar – Newcastle still interested?
The defender will not come cheap though, and he has previously stated he does not want to leave Ibrox and Rangers don’t need to sell.
But Rangers may be tempted to sell if a huge offer came in – as was the case in Alan Hutton’s £8million move from Rangers to Spurs last season.
Rangers boss Walter Smith confirmed that no bid has yet been made for Cuellar, but admitted it would be hard to turn down a big money offer.
Smith said:
“”If a club offers you big money for a player there is always pressure on you to give it serious consideration – especially after you’ve been knocked out of Europe.â€
“We’re more susceptible to an offer, but so far we haven’t had one and I hope that continues.â€
“We have no offer for Carlos and that is where we stand right now. We don’t want one and are not seeking one and we don’t need to sell the player, or any player, at this stage.”
The 26-year-old only signed for Rangers in July 2007, for a fee of around £2.4M from Spanish side Osasuna.
So if Rangers could get £7M for the players, that’s £4M profit in 12 months – not too shabby.
Of course they made a profit on another of their center-backs in January, 2005 when Graeme Souness paid around £8M for French center-back Jean Alain Boumsong – who Rangers had got on a free transfer the summer before.
So that was £8M profit in around 5 months that time around – and we know that Boumsong did not last long at Newcastle or in the Premier League.
Let’s hope Cuellar will be better than Boumsong, if indeed we do go after him.
But in all honesty it would be a surprise to us if we brought in both Cuellar and Coloccini to Newcastle.
What do you think?

Comment #43I think we should be allright for CB’s now that Coloccini appears to have signed.
We should start Coloccini and either Taylor or Faye. Probably Faye. Then we still have Cacapa and Bassong. Now we should try to sign a fullback and a striker. David Healy has lots of experience and is a proven goalscorer.

Comment #47Bloody hell, Stoke are in talks with Nikola Zigic. Obviously we weren’t interested then, otherwise he’d never even consider Stoke…at least I hope so.

Comment #51I really doubt theres interest in Cuellar now we have Coloccini wrapped up and Taylor, Faye, Bassong, Cacapa and Edgar competing for two spots.
Left back is a prority and i hope we up the bid for Warnock as he is definately worth it, Also love a cheeky bid for De Jong who may want to leave Hamburg now VDV has.

Comment #58I personally would like Warnock as he is proven premiership quality and is a bit older 26-27 i think
Taiwo reminds me of Enrique in physique and style of play a big stocky lad and good going forward but makes some errors defensively that you would expect from a younger lad.
So i would personally go for the older player on this occasion.

after tonights match.
We SAW coliccini in the directors box just below where ashley was. We know this pretty much for sure because of the bushy hair haha – but he WAS there.
and alan smith was really over doing it clapping the fans and waving (goodbye) loads and alot more than any player at the end – could this mean he’s on his way out?

Comment #65It looks like Seb Larsson wants to move to a prem club and if we got him a LB and a striker I would be very happy. He would be excellent cover and can take good freekicks. Smith was a trier but never quite found goalscoring form after breaking his leg. We need players who can put the ball in the net unless our defense gets considerably better.

Comment #69Burdisso can play lb, he’s played there loads. Or we should do a swap with Smith & leighton Baines as he’s not starting for Everton & is a good young lb imo. Why are people going on about Seb larsson? I saw him play today & he’s a very average player imo & we already have Jonas & Milner in that position.

I was just going to say that we have Gutierrez and Milner to play on the right and both are playing well and Duff can cover there too and is playing as well as he has since his arrival.
We need a LB, Another CM and maybe another Striker.

Comment #76we don’t need a LB we can have Bassong there, we defo need Mid and Striker tho but if we have enough cash left then look for a LB, and Cuellar is poor and no way worth 4 let alone 7mill id rather have Insua or someone like that for a few million.

Comment #77Does anyone know anything about the Owen link to spurs? I’ve seen it alot recently & really hope it isn’t true. I think he could get loads of goals if he stays fit this season with the supply he’s gonna get from Jonas, Duff & Milner.
