FT: Newcastle 2 Valencia 1 - Magpies Brilliant

August 9th, 2008 · 100 Comments

nufc-crest.pngvalencia-_cf.png

In a tremendously fast paced game today, Newcastle got the win they thoroughly deserved when James Milner hit home from just 6 yards, after a Steven Taylor header came off the bar from a Jonas Gutierrez cross.

And there was just 60 seconds of added time left.

Now we understand what Keegan means when he says we may not be the most gifted but we’ll be the fittest as this game was played at tremendous speed by the home side.

And watching from the stands was Fabricio Coloccini, who is expected to sign for the club soon, and the Argentine must have been impressed with what he saw from the Newcastle side.

It was a typical display from a Keegan side as they surged forward all the time, particularly in the second half after surprisingly going down to a Joaquin goal after 38 minutes, after they had been on top in the first half.

The goal came from nothing and had to ask questions about the center of Newcastle’s defense as Joaquin found himself one on one with Given, following a cross from the right that was headed over Cacapa.

Joaquin made no mistake and rifled home expertly.

But in that first 45 minutes Newcastle had played some good attacking football and we thought at half time it may be some second half.

And what a final 45 minutes from this Newcastle side.

Not only did they come back to finally win the game, but they surged forward at every attempt and each player seemingly playing as though their very lives depended on it.

And this was a pre-season game!

Not sure what Kevin is feeding the team, but keep it up.

This was a wonderful game to watch for the home fans, and maybe the nufcTV display speeded up the game but it was played at a fast pace, with Newcastle no doubt hoping to wear out this talented Valencia side, in the second half.

The first goal came from a Gutierrez corner from the right and Duff, who had another terrific game, headed the ball firmly past a statuesque goalkeeper.

It was a great goal by Duff after 76 minutes.

And if you though Newcastle would relax, think again, because if anything Newcastle increased their pace and rhythm, and continued to surge forward at every opportunity.

Then they got exactly what they deserved and they’ll be called lucky because they scored another good goal with just 60 seconds on added time left. But they made their luck by always looking to attack, and if they play like this this season, we should be able to get a bucketful of points.

Again it was the energetic Gutierrez on the right and he got in a cross that Taylor hit against the bar, but it came out to James Milner who made no mistake and rifled the ball into the net to give the Magpies a deserved win.

A fitting finish to a tremendously energetic and exciting game.

We were surprised at how good the lads looked, and it’s certainly true this team is fit.

It’s exactly what the Newcastle fans needed to see, before our tough game at Old Trafford next Sunday.

But with a superb fighting performance like this under their belts, against a good looking Valencia side we might add, there will be no lack of confidence in the side - that’s a certainty.

Comments welcome.

I am very happy with today’s performance. Last season we looked slow, devoid of form, we lacked motivation and couldn’t maintain possession. Today, we finally looked like a team!

  • 20 simon376 // Aug 9, 2008 at 20:03

    Great result!!!

Don’t want to be too negative here, but if I had a choice, I would keep Shola over Smith everytime. Smith can’t score but is supposed to play with so much heart. Shola plays with about 6 times the heart of Smith. And no, I’m not really a fan of Shola either, but given the choice for backup….

Anyway, nuff of me being negative, lets hope with new players and players coming back, we can take this on into the new season and be on the up.

  • 21 Spyro // Aug 9, 2008 at 20:11

good display, but we were playing an unfit valencia side who were not as physically ready as we were, hence their poor start and lacklustre performance in the last 20mins. Lets not get too carried away guys. However, in terms of players gelling, KK has worked a bit of a miracle with Guthrie and Jonas, seems like they have been with us for at least a season

  • 22 MAG PIE // Aug 9, 2008 at 20:15

Just back from the match and a bit surprised by the comments so far. Ut was a bit like watching paint dry for 75 minutes but a very good last 15 minutes.

just got back from the match…….was sat in the gallowgate with the ultras……they were canny loud lyk. we just kept laughing at smith by the end. u see his pathetic shot??

  • 28 tino97 // Aug 9, 2008 at 20:21

It was a good result, but for long periods Valencia passed it around us. We still need someone creative in the centre. Jonas and Milner/Duff are playing well on the wings. But to really progress we need something a bit special in centre mid.

I think Beye should get a special mention he never stopped working the whole time he was on the pitch. Great attitude in pre-season.

  • 29 Toon1978 // Aug 9, 2008 at 20:22

I was at the match, just got in good result but i was a little angered at the booing toward Alan Smith, way out of order the booing was behind me and i ended up in a blazing arguement with someone booing. Yes, he’s been poor for us but he’s wearing the black and white shirt and plays for us, totally out of order, i feel a little sorry for Smith he was the last one off the pitch after clapping towards the fans, i feel this was his last game for us. I did not see Colocinni to be honest has anyone anymore news or did anyone else see him Colocinni?

  • 31 Toon1978 // Aug 9, 2008 at 20:23

Colo’s curly hair , i did see his pathetic shot, i was also in the Gallowgate, did you hear the booing mate?

  • 32 Spyro // Aug 9, 2008 at 20:24

Jonas is just the type of player we need, he tries the whole time he is on the pitch, even if it is a friendy. He looked knackered at the end of the match. As for his strength, pace and skill, they are all unquestionable. Quality signing.

As for Guthrie, wow, this guy has really blown me away, his workrate and quality of passing is superb. He is fairly good in a tackle and he is a speedy little player aswell. That was one hell of a corner from him to set up Duff.

Individually the defence was good today and both Taylor and Cacapa made at least one stand out tackle e.g. Taylor stayed on his feet to tackle the tricky Villa. However, there were a few occassions when they did not operate well as a unit and it looked as though there was a clear lack of communication at times.

Milner was good apart from crossing,
Zoggy was good for most of the second half but poor at LB.,
Beye got better as the game went on,
Martins looked the dangerous, speed little powerhouse he always does,
and Butt was good defensively but shouldnt be involved in much of the build up play as his passing is still bad

  • 35 Fergie // Aug 9, 2008 at 20:37

normski, everyone knows he’s not that good, but thats no excuse to boo him. thats why its called SUPPORT

  • 36 antz // Aug 9, 2008 at 20:38

collocini was in the platinum club area with what looked like his agent, also ashley had the blue/purple away top on with ‘collocini’ on the back

  • 37 51times // Aug 9, 2008 at 20:39

I was in the corner between the Leazes and Milburn stand. It was a bit sh*t where I was, nobody was singing but oh well, entertaining at times but we looked a little lost when we went forward. And Duff still can’t go past people.

  • 40 Toon1978 // Aug 9, 2008 at 20:41

    Normski

I’m not disagreeing with you on that point mate, what i am disagreeing with is the booing towards a NUFC player. I’m Sure Smith already knows that he ain’t good enough atm but when he came on he looked genually shocked at the negativity thrown at him. And i did not see Colo anywhere i was looking for him. I’m not saying he was not mind lol.

  • 41 Gonufc // Aug 9, 2008 at 20:44

Decent result for a week before season starts but i still think we badly need a creative centre midfielder! Glad about Collocini and Ashley wearin his name makes me think it is sorted now, but also made me think that there must be a reason for delaying showing him off- another signing very close? Hopefully it’s derdiyok, Larsson or someone like Moutinho (though that’s not at all likely).

PS. To boo Smith is really harsh, he’s been terrible and is prbably leaving, surely that’s enough for him- he’s never done anything actively against the club (even if he did by accident)

  • 42 Kaler // Aug 9, 2008 at 20:45

Jonas Gutierrez = Absolute quality! What a steal!!

  • 43 toon 101 // Aug 9, 2008 at 20:46

No need to boo Smith i know he hasn’t scored yet but still if we boo him he’s never gunna score now let’s get behind the lad and give him some much needed confidence

  • 44 richie // Aug 9, 2008 at 20:46

I am glad you feel booing Smith was out of order mate. Really gets my goat up when thar happens. The lad has had a really bad season and his confidence must be rock bottom after that. He needs to sort himself out and prove the doubters wrong.

  • 46 MMNUFC // Aug 9, 2008 at 20:50

Booing smith bang out of order and not called for..Yes he is crap but he has never not given %100.

  • 47 51times // Aug 9, 2008 at 20:53

I may think Smith is awful, but I still respect that shirt he wears. As long as he or anyone else put on that shirt I will never boo them.

toon78 kidda nowt will ever change if am honest simply bcoz there are many ppl that are not happy mate… 10%rise and given the same football, ppl will stay away mate,if ppl ie ashley are willing to spend and get quality then things change mate over night theres nowt new about that???

  • 52 Warwick Hunt // Aug 9, 2008 at 20:56

I didn’t see the game so any link to high lights/goals would be much appreciated.
I’m with Simon369 on the Ameobi v Smith debate, I would keep Ameobi over Smith any day.
Of course if we could sell both and get someone better, that would be a better idea, but I think we are going to keep one of them and my choice would be Ameobi.

  • 53 leeroy // Aug 9, 2008 at 20:58

I watched he game on this link we looked good I think Duff was the best player all around and also it was GUTHRIE who crossed the corner for our first goal not jonas

  • 55 Gonufc // Aug 9, 2008 at 20:59

Just seen Collocini on Sky Sports News, definately there! He still has big hair if anyone was worried.

  • 56 Johnny_Toon // Aug 9, 2008 at 21:01

The corner came from Guthrie, who dserves a mention as he was great today. Nicky Butt was the only weakness, poor passing, poor accuracy in his shots and certainly replaceable

  • 57 Toon1978 // Aug 9, 2008 at 21:06

    Normski

Ashley NEEDS to bring more quality in. I must admit Valencia were a very tidy side and passed around us for large chunks of the game, Duff…well, he scored a goal BUT he runs around in circles BECAUSE he cannot beat his man. For his goal he was at the right place at the right time and took his goal well that was it. I was getting dizzy just watching him run round and around and then pass it backwards. I may be a little harsh on the lad but thats what i saw.

  • 58 JoshNufc91 // Aug 9, 2008 at 21:09

danny guthrie ran the midfield, great vision and passing, his quality is unquestionable and a bargain at £2m (ish). thought spidey looked tired and didnt repeat his great performances of late. the need for an attacking midfielder is getting pretty urgent, especially with man utd around the corner but the pleasing news is that we created chances against a class team, even if we squandered many of them. btw expect another signing next week.
    watch this space

  • 59 Steve // Aug 9, 2008 at 21:10

Well, i think that was def a prob of the team last season, the build-ups were too slow. I am really happy to see that KK has utilised the squad to the best of his ability and given them all some good motivation. Well done lads!

  • 60 Toon1978 // Aug 9, 2008 at 21:12

    Josh

Did you not see the amount of times we had the ball in their box and were urging them to shoot. No one wanted to shoot for a long period of time, i thought we were never going to score.

I think Larrson,Derdyok,Cuellar and Inlar are all very very possible signings. Rangers are out of Europe which could see us snap Cuellar up, Larrson wants out so there is another big possibility, Derdyok has been strongly linked in the last few days and Inlar as Alonso could be on his way to the goonerrs.

  • 65 A.L 9 // Aug 9, 2008 at 21:29

Good game but I must say I agree with the ones here who think booing Smith is wrong.
I’m sure he’d be the first to admit he’s not be great for us but atleast he’s trying even though he has hardly been played in his prefered position up front. If he was slagging us fans off or not putting a shift in then I couldn’t disagree with the booing but that was out of order. If anything he should have been applauded when he came on, atleast that may have given him a bit of confidence (which i’m sure he needs at the minutes).

Honestly though, what are people achieving by booing a player who’s coming onto the field for there team, it can only be bad for his confidence which will then affect his performance on te pitch.

  • 66 roy morten79(norway) // Aug 9, 2008 at 21:36

i hope the booing will stop, wonder what collicini was thinking when he heard it.the inter milan supporters just booed luis figo when he was leaving the field. i actually feel sorry for smith, just think if it happend to you..

  • 67 blitziouz // Aug 9, 2008 at 21:46

well 30 odd games no goals its what he is paid to do. bet he comes out with a nice pay cheque aswell

  • 68 simon376 // Aug 9, 2008 at 21:51

Despite what I said about Smith, I do think the booing was out of order. best thing would have been t applaud Oba then keep quiet when Smith came on. That would have put the point across. Then again maybe we should be trying to give the lad some confidence. The way he left, last one off, I agree with the earlier post, could have been his last game.

  • 69 ObaFan2 // Aug 9, 2008 at 22:00

Just got back from a great match.

We didn’t deserve to be 1-0 down at half time as we played well and after they scored we were passing better. Cacapa definately our better defender and why does Taylor have to use his fore arm on the back of the opposition all the time… bad habit!
Oba rusty but he’s so quick.

2nd half was really good game. Spidey for me was again MOTM and full of running even in extra time.

Smith, what can I say, he was subbed for Oba and the cheers turned to boos….. I admire his bottle, after 10 minutes I heard someone say we should put Smith on…….lol or Peter Stringfellow (tanned n blond hair) as someone said  he is useless… poor guy, looked like he had played 90 minutes and he’d only been on the pitch 10 !

The corner was great for Duff’s goal and we deserved the winner imo in extra time.

Great game, much better than Wednesday and much better opposition.

Stroll on Man U…… Spidey’s class lets add to it :)

    –TWO IMPORTANT OBSERVATIONS–

    after tonights match.

We SAW coliccini in the directors box just below where ashley was. We know this pretty much for sure because of the bushy hair haha - but he WAS there.

and alan smith was really over doing it clapping the fans and waving (goodbye) loads and alot more than any player at the end - could this mean he’s on his way out?

  • 73 linz // Aug 9, 2008 at 22:23

i was there and booing smith was WAY out of order, the guy wants to play for the club and do well unlike some rubbish we’ve seen over the years who would rather play down the quayside than SJP, give the lad a break and maybe his second season may prove more productive….if not then he’s had a fair chance.

  • 74 dingo // Aug 9, 2008 at 22:30

MAG PIE… i agrtee… i just got bacjk and all.. (bit pissed like but we have to play way better if we are gonna hit top10 this season…. we only got our game in the last 20 mins…. super fit i think not but I am well happy and motral witn the result

the booing cam efrom the gallowgate ’singing corner’ in the brown ale stand…. i can sdee thier point he has to respond buy scoring.. missed at least 3 great ops tonihjgt… i want to like him for his effortt but he needs to score or assist to stay in the toon.

  • 77 ObaFan2 // Aug 9, 2008 at 22:39

    Toon Army

Watchin Smith is comical… sorry, I know he tries but he’s cost us £9million so far and thats not funny.

I didn’t boo him but plenty did and I understand why. If it’s his swansong then fine, I think he’s had plenty of chances to prove himself, after he had his attempt at goal Duff was clappin him like mad to try and boost his confidence…..poor guy……oh £3 million richer!

  • 78 A.L 9 // Aug 9, 2008 at 22:43

Aye but Dingo booing someone because they are off the boil a bit is not needed, it doesn’t look good for the clubs image and i damages the players confidence even more, plus for people saying 30 games and no goals, although this is very poor, he has been used pretty much just as a spair player filling holes, he has not had time to settle as a striker which is his position, I don’t believe he will get that time either as we have better players up front so I think he should be sold, but seen as a player that had tried but it never worked out right instead of been booed even though he is blatantly trying his hardest and giving his all (even if it is still not good enough for our side)

  • 79 JONNY // Aug 9, 2008 at 22:51

  • 81 dingo // Aug 9, 2008 at 22:54

I am no agreeing with em just stating where they were in the ground, thier average age was probably 19… kids are fickle and I can understand them but dont hold the same poi t of view. I for one like AS and wish that more of the team would give his effort… but again he has to perform to keep everyone happy including KK etc. hes better to move on and start again underlining his comeback.

jonas was good in patches but drifted in and out of the game. Martins seems to have improved his passing and link up play, guthrie is impressing me more every time i see him. Milner was excellent especially in the first half.
alan smith was a disgrace. you shouldnt boo our players but when he came on it was embarrassing to watch. His shot was pathetic.

Manuel Fernandes would be a decent signing, looked good when he came on for them.

  • 84 Punk Skunk // Aug 9, 2008 at 23:43

Booing ya’ own team is for ma*kams!..

  • 85 Gareth // Aug 9, 2008 at 23:48

The only time booing your own team is remotely acceptable is when they’re clearly and unequivocably taking the piss. We may not agree with Smith being in the team, but he’s never short-changed us on effort and doesn’t deserve negativity directed straight at him. I’m sure most of us wouldn’t be gutted if he was sold, but while he’s a Newcastle player we have to support him - that’s the deal; end of.

I notice the “Milner has no end product” brigade are quiet tonight - I thought he was whipping in dangerous deliveries all game today. Good work son.

  • 86 Spuggy // Aug 10, 2008 at 0:00

Been to match, really enjoyed the game, played some cracking fluid passing football.

Would support most of whats been said - Guthrie, Gutierrez settling in great and showed good quality. Duff was quite frankly brilliant, like signing a new player - wings are def now sorted. Milner played a lot better in these last 2 home games which is great to see, still think he’s worth a punt in midfield with guthrie, has enough guile to play there but is not really an out-and-out winger, rarely skins a player on pace, usually with guile.

Only criticism is…….very few players making runs behind the defence, we were passing sideways often but used the wings very well. We need MO back for sure but that will be sorted soon.

Butt is great defensively but probably not worth the sacrifice for his inconsistent passing and link play - replace with a quality CM to play alongside guthrie, who can adapt to the Defensive role.

Coliccini on MA shirt and in stands - great news (couldn’t see from where I was sitting behind goal). Another 2 signings and we’ll be sorted - def a CM, and either an experienced LB or good CF, ideally both but don’t think thats gonna happen.

This is how the team lined up…

    Beye…..Taylor….Cacapa…..Zog

    Milner…..Butt….Guthrie…Guti

    ……….Duff…..Martins…….

Second half, Smith replaced Martin (to disgusting boo’s) Edgar and Bassong got a run out at RB and CD.

So imagine this team with Coliccini/Faye in the middle, quality addition to replace Butt, and MO and the Duke up front…..looking good….

Well said Gareth, some of the abuse on these boards is unreal. Milner isnt world class, but he’s a damn good player! And Smith has never given anything less than 100%.

    Toon1978
from a reliable source, trust me mate =)

booing smith was wrong but the people who did cant be blamed for venting their frustration at a truly disgraceful player, to be fair to the lad though he always applauds the fans..so he should having to put up with him and his £60k a wee wages lol lets hope hes off to everton and we get in a target man like derdiyok.

  • 89 supershay // Aug 10, 2008 at 1:10

Booing a player of a team you supposedly support?
Absolute idiots, not fans. Best of luck Smith if it is your last game, and come on lad if its not.

  • 90 STF // Aug 10, 2008 at 2:35

Great result, the late win is good for the team as it will encourage them towards the hard fitness program they have been on. We played well but we really need to add attacking play through the middle to our list of tricks.

    Regards

Just got to say Milners good but no where near the finished article, he still can’t get that many good balls into the centre and hits the first defender more often than not but saying that he has played alot lot better in pre-season and looking forward to a good season from him. When he keeps his head up he supplies better balls and something I’m sure he’s worked on and will continually work on.

  • 92 xfer // Aug 10, 2008 at 4:06

Colo’s Curly Locks #27, that shot by smith was unbelievable if anything. I thought the referee had called for offside, thats why the poor poor weak shot. My 5 years old daughter would have saved that!

  • 93 xfer // Aug 10, 2008 at 4:09

kajman #38, no, im having the same problem as well… Cpu usage rockets whenever im here.

  • 94 Tripp // Aug 10, 2008 at 4:56

The cpu is the server CPU, not you lads. It ususally spikes right at half-time and again once the match is over. It’s like clockwork. It has to do with the number of hits to the site. During those times people are refreshing constantly and Ed’s allotment of CPU time gets knackered.

Booing Smith is a disgrace and dishonours NUFC. It really pisses me off to hear that that happened. Can’t say I’m terribly surprised but still…

  • 95 Ericles // Aug 10, 2008 at 8:08

I did not like it when Smith came on because for a while it messed our penetration up. The booing of him was wrong and sick. Never, never boo a player in Toon colours. Criticise fairly yes, but
never insult a team member like that. I watched a vastly improved and exciting side today. Now for the quality incomings and I think we will suprise many a top 4 or their pretenders.

wow..a 2-1 win over valencia a very very good thing..as you can see valencia is a very very good team..they have the players like joaquin, silva, villa, abelda, baraja, del horno…what a superb by newcastle united..keep it up

  • 97 clinta // Aug 10, 2008 at 12:31

Looks like the Valencia team they put out wasn’t half bad either, some great names in that lot we beat.

I’m wanting Viduka fit know as would love t see him getting on the end of some of Gutierrez’s crosses.

how’d oba play too? and what sort of reception did he get from the faithful?

booing smith/ or any player, your booing the shirt, not right at all!!!!

  • 98 ObaFan2 // Aug 10, 2008 at 13:15

clinta, Oba’s loved by the fans and always gets the biggest cheers/support. He was a little rusty but he dropped back and played some good link up play and oh is he quick.
Atleast he should be fit for next Sunday as I think having an hour only was just incase he pushed himself too much.

Great to see him back and he looks fired up, even after all he’s been through recently.

  • 99 Kelvin Koogan // Aug 10, 2008 at 13:22

Guthrie and Gutierrez looked really good. I was really impressed with Gutierrez’s work ethic, hes big strong, kind of lanky, but a real lion with plenty of vision. Two great signings,.

Milner and Duff looked good, but their long balls are still really poor.

Butt loses the ball a bit too frequently for my liking.

    Booing Smith was wrong

Ref Rennie annoyed the hell out of everyone, constantly stopping the game pointlessly. the guys a fool.

Overall a great result, perfect for the last pre-season. we’ve had much worse teams than this in the past decade. I think with some luck on the injury front we could be chasing a UFEA spot this season. Keep the faith comrades.

  • 100 Ross // Aug 10, 2008 at 19:47

Gutierrez didnt stop running. he was all over the field for the 90 minutes solid.
and at times valencia were just having to kick at his heels as they found it impossible to take the ball from his feet, he just looks brilliant, a complete steal.
