In a fast paced end to end contest this afternoon Newcastle found themselves one goal down at half time against a good Valencia side.
Newcastle were probably the better side in the first half and were unlucky to be behind.
Early in the first half Martins showed his pace to great applause from the Newcastle crowd as he burst away towards goal from his marker Abiol, but Oba was then brought down.
N’Zogbia’s free kick did not test the goalkeeper.
The Newcastle side were playing well, and playing typical Keegan type football, passing the ball around and the side looked well organized and free-flowing. Very good to watch.
N’Zogbia then got past Miguel on the left and burst away into the penalty area and although it was a tight angle N’Zogbia did well to force German goalkeeper Hilderbrand to make the save.
But then when is looked like Newcastle would be the first team to score, Valencia surprisingly went ahead.
A high ball came in from the left and a Valencia player headed the ball back and over Claudio Cacapa, and suddenly Joaquin was open and clear - and he slotted the ball nicely past Given.
Given was not pleased with the goal, and he must have wondered how the center of our defense was opened up so easily. Not a good goal to concede.
But then after around 42 minutes Newcastle put together a simply beautiful move with flowing passes from defense. Milner on the right, then cut in and turned the defender inside out before flashing a shot that whistled passed the goalkeeper’s left hand post.
A brilliant move by Newcastle that would have been a text book breakaway goal.
So Newcastle are behind at the interval, but the lads seem full of life and the second half promises to be more excellent entertainment for the crowd.
It would also be nice if we can win this game.

Give Smith a chance my fellow toon army. He deserves it and poorly needs it much from us! I’m so sad to read that some of us are booing him. Look at Duff. Aren’t you all are calling for his head earlier this summer? But what happen now? Let me remind you friends, Smith was a Manchester United player, his ability is undoubted and acknowledged by Sir Alex! Get behind him like the gaffer! He gave us 100% in his games last season, I believe he can deliver with our support, come on lads!
55 azim // Aug 9, 2008 at 19:09
smith should partner a big player like viduka b4 we can judge him…maybe we have been to harsh on him

63 Soren // Aug 9, 2008 at 19:16
To be fair nearly every time Smith has played as a striker for us, he has been our “target player”, and he isn’t that good at it given his size. I think many are very harsh on him, especielly those who boo’d him at the game. For shame!!!
Still believe in Smith
64 fred // Aug 9, 2008 at 19:16
and i believe thats good for both
65 ronaldeano // Aug 9, 2008 at 19:17

67 WIGAZ // Aug 9, 2008 at 19:17
Well lads dont know bout you but i enjoyed that! Duff is looking so sharp! he really is like a new signing when he’s playin like that, Guthrie has really impressed me in every game! it was good to see MA with Colo on his shirt then to see the man himself, at least we know this deal is done! i feel a bit better after watchin that, especially as we’ve got Owen to come back too! & vids who are our main goal threats. Mind you duff could be in the goals this season if he keeps playin like that! well done Damien son! well done!

76 reillers // Aug 9, 2008 at 19:21
It was a great turn around.
Our mid was decent, our forwards can improve, Shay was good but our defence, for the goal was atrocious.
Duff was very very good, very sharp.
Guthrie was very impressive.
Gutierrez was decent enough as well.
Given made one or two decent saves.
etc….
I’m in a much better mood then I was at the end of the other matches.
77 Spyro // Aug 9, 2008 at 19:22
oh for gods sake, it doesnt matter. We haven’t got a big enough squad to be sympathising with players who are on 60k per week, dont boo him, but just get rid of him.
78 dan // Aug 9, 2008 at 19:22
You lot really are a bunch of arseholes!!
Leave Smith along and try and get behind the lad…Jerry Mcquire is dead right. Everyone was on Duffs back last season, now people love him.
This season, if owen, viduka and oba are out injured we might have to rely on this lad producing the goods…What chance has he got of that if everyone in the ground has been booing him all season!!?
Sick of useless supporters who think they know best. Let KK make the decisions on who is worth a game, for gods sake!
79 ronaldeano // Aug 9, 2008 at 19:23
Colo observed the treatment of Smith then…..
Not a very good impression our fans gave tonight then.
The lad will be petrified to have a bad game now if thats the way we treat our players at sjp
The boo boys need to shut their dirty holes man
80 Soren // Aug 9, 2008 at 19:24
On another note, good game from our side. The players got their heads down and kept on, and it payed off in the end. Our buys Gutierrez and Guthrie looks like such great signings. Love the way Gutierrez takes on players and keep going even when hes about to go down. Duff looked sharp today as it has been said. Taylor, Cacapa, Butt and Beye looked good defensively too, apart from the goal of course.
Ohh and bring on Coloccini !!
81 Tripp // Aug 9, 2008 at 19:25
Booing anybody is unacceptable. What a pack of tossers, that lot. Yes, Smith has been poor, but it’s not like the lad is trying to suck. KK has put him on the pitch and the “fans” should politely applaud and cheer the team on. Booing hurts every players confidence and boosts the confidence of the away side. How many of our players are now thinking “that could be me”. Bloody helpful that is.
Sounds a great game. I really wish I coulda seen it. It’s great to see our midfielders performing, esp the new signings and Duff.
82 Edd Case // Aug 9, 2008 at 19:26
Smith did not ‘head the ball to Milner’ he should have scored but hit the post.
To be fair to Smith, he works very hard for the team and as some of you have rightly pointed out, we’ve used him poorly as a target man, which he is not.
Put him up with Viduka or hopefully that new 6′3” striker we’re being linked with and we might see him knock in 10-15 goals.
Smith is a squad player at best though when you have Viduka, Owen and Martins.
But, I’m always ready to give players another chance, so you have my backing Mr Smith.
Back to the match though, Guiterez looks a cracking signing and some of our play today was brilliant.
Guthrie is absolutely brilliant too.
Coloccini and 2 more signings of that quality and we will be very close to the top four - IF we can get a few wins under our belts and a reasonable start to the season.
After watching todays match, I am now very excited about this coming season - especially watching Spidey!
Howay the lads.
83 Spyro // Aug 9, 2008 at 19:27
dan…what the hell are you on about!? how many fans of other teams would not be complaining about a striker who hasnt scored a single competitive goal for them? Its so easy to come on here playing the “good guy” now we won a game, but if we had lost and Smith hadnt of had a shot on goal everyone would be on here slaggin him off. The guy isn’t good enough and he is on 60k per week, get rid
84 Tripp // Aug 9, 2008 at 19:28
Is there a song that ridicules the boo boys? It should be sung loud and clear as soon as there’s booing. Those d*ckheeds need to be put in there place. The comment about what Colo heard is spot on. There’s already enough pressure to succeed, we don’t need useless negative pressure from the supporters.
85 Nues // Aug 9, 2008 at 19:28
I wanted to give Smith a chance.
But for the 2nd thought, he is on 60k per week.
Enough said.

88 Uatu The Watcher // Aug 9, 2008 at 19:29
Guthrie is making that position his own to lose. He has been impressive so far, esp tonight.
I remember when Wenger first signed Viera. Everyone was sayin ” Who the f*ck is Viera?”
After six games, they were sayin ” Where the F*ck is Viera?”
I still can’t believe Coloccini now plays for Newcastle United!
89 Tripp // Aug 9, 2008 at 19:29
Spyro, agree about the 60K part, but that’s hardly his fault. If Everton want him, there are a lot of us who’d help pack (he’d have to pay me airfare), but booing just doesn’t cut. Ever. Period.
90 the black magpie // Aug 9, 2008 at 19:29
i personally would not have booed- but damn fans sometimes have to make themselves heard
the fact of the matter is very few people on this blog and in the toon army itself feel he warrents so many chances of field time in respect to his output to date
must i remind you 0 goals ( and he has played up front many time- oo like tonight)
too many fouls
i dont condone booing- but to be honest im more concerned about his reaction-
does he respond with bag full of goals 9THATS WHAT OWEN DOES) does he continue mediocre or does he bottle it and leave- thats the real questions
the fans pay their money and sing their songs and generally make themselves heard
91 ronaldeano // Aug 9, 2008 at 19:29

92 Faustino // Aug 9, 2008 at 19:30

99 reillers // Aug 9, 2008 at 19:54
You can’t really compare the Smith situation with the Duff one.
Smith didn’t play for United because he was a bad player. He was a good player. He always lifted them. He pretty much inspired the 7-1 win in the CL, running chasing everyone down, every single ball, then all the other players started doing it, and he was very close with the players at Man U.
After he broke his leg, which looked so so painful, beyond words. He wasn’t the same, he lost his place then and never got it back. When he went to Newcastle I had high hopes for him. I thought he’d be able to inspire Newcaslte, the way he had Man U but he didn’t, he hasn’t.
Duff was fantastic, himself, Robbie Keane and Given were the lads who lit up the World Cup in 02, from an Irish perspective. Given save, after save, Duff, was a wizard on the wing, every time he got the ball he turned peoples heads, brilliant crosses into the square, running past people with ease etc, scoring or setting up goals, which Keane most of the time put them away. But Duff, that Duff, the pre injury Duff was amazing. He was good, I mean one of the players of the tournament good.
Then he got injured after that, a while after that, he wasn’t really the same wee lad he was back when he was one of “Kerr’s kids”. He, unlike Smith, never got the chance to show us how good he still is because he had injury after injury.
Last season against Ireland in a friendly, we were seeing flashes of the old Duff, but now, he seems to be returning back to his old self, and I couldn’t be more delighted for him because he’s worked unbelievably hard for it.
Smith has had chance after chance after chance and keeps letting us down, keeps screwing up, it’s gotten to a point where the former Man U player is groaned at when he comes on from some of the fans.
I’ve no problem giving the wee lad another chance, but how many more chances are we supposed to give him??
100 fred // Aug 9, 2008 at 20:17
Wondering wether he gets applauds or boos if he returns SJP in other shirts, since they have been so busy kicking him off the club
101 shirts // Aug 9, 2008 at 22:39
Booing your own team is retarded
No matter how pants Smith is/has been. I’m not a Smith believer, to be honest. Maybe he’ll come good and maybe he won’t, but the booing should stop.
