Damien Duff had another excellent game this afternoon for Newcastle, and looked like he could (and did) run all day, and Kevin Keegan was quick to praise the Irishman.

Damien Duff - played great again today
Newcastle manager Kevin Keegan seemed delighted after the excellent win against Valencia this afternoon, at St. James’ Park.
We don’t usually see Damien Duff head the ball much at all, but what a stunning header he hit home after 77 minutes today, following a good Jonas Gutierrez corner.
And you could see Kevin on the line waving and saying something to Duff - probably just congratulations, but the Irishman has been a revelation in the summer.
We were calling for him to be sold a few weeks back, so he’s managed to prove us completely wrong with his brilliant displays in pre-season - and we love it. We were wrong about Duff - dead wrong.
It also shows you what a great character the man has - when things look their darkest he comes back with his best performances in a black and white shirt - good for him.
Kevin said after the game:
“Damien Duff has been terrific for us - you could be talking about seven goals pre-season.”“He’s been working very hard. It’s the first time he’s had a pre-season - and it shows. It looked like he could run forever.”
“The goal today is not the sort of goal you associate with Damien Duff but his fitness level is fantastic, he has really trained hard, and he is now getting his rewards.”
The goal said up a grandstand finish that had Newcastle looking for the winner which came when James Milner rifled home on 91 minutes from 6 yards.
Keegan said Duff, as well as many others in the team were “my type of players”, and cited Charles N’Zogbia, Oba Martins and new signing Jonas Gutierrez as examples.
Quite honestly the lads today ran their socks off, and while we mustn’t get too carried away - because Valencia are at least a week behind us in their training - there were dare we say it - signs that Kevin has woven his magic over a lot of the players out there today.
The team played like a Kevin Keegan team - full of action, enthusiasm and swarming forward all the time - just great to watch - it’s the way football was meant to be played.
There’s one thing that was obvious today - any team coming to St. James’ Park this season had better be fit - otherwise we’ll run them off their feet.
Of the Argentinian Gutierrez, Keegan said:
“He is a combination of ability and a big heart, and the Geordies love that.”
The crowd was a good one of 31,494 and Keegan continued:
“It was a really good pre-season game. They were a good side and showed their quality.”
“They were good on the ball and comfortable from back to front.”
“But they are maybe a week behind us in terms of preparation and we looked fitter as the game went on. We finished really strongly.”
Maybe it was because our expectations were so low, because of all the hassle going on in the press - but we were surprised at how good the team looked and played today.
Not only did they look really really fit, but the players were strolling the ball around beautifully.
If Kevin was right in January when he said we only need 3-4 top players - maybe we are closer to having a good team than we thought - we certainly hope so.
Certainly the lads today can be proud of their performances today and Keegan is obviously upbeat about the performance - and so he should be.
If this is a taste of what the team will serve up in future games - we just cannot wait.
But we know we cannot get carried away, and we’ll now have to see how we do in the real world of the Premier and European Champions at Old Trafford next Sunday.
That’s when the real test begins.
Comments welcome.

i was impressed today like aint felt this optimistic in a long time, think how solid our defence could be if collocini adapts as well as he says. also guttierez looks like the buy of the season, and i really will have high expectaions if owen signs a new contact

Lets hope KK can transform Smith into a top striker. he obviously thinks he can because he does not want to sell him. The Alan Smith of a few years ago would keep Oba and and Owen out the team. Come on Smudger!!! Smith and The Duke in tandem. Dream forward line.

Who on this blog would not accept 3mil for Smith? Nobody. Lets hope the press are making it up again about KK blocking the deal because if it is true then KK has totally lost the plot. He may be our only fit forward this week but he cannot score and as such is a non player. waste of space.

Daiv - Think I read somewhere (can’t remember where) they will be sent out from the 11/08/08. I signed up for the 3 year deal. After today I’m feeling a bit more hopeful. I still wasn’t over impressed, but it’s been the best game yet and lets face it, they are a good team. I really like what I’ve seen of Guthrie up to now, looks a great buy.
It’s been nice to be back at St James the past couple of games, roll on next weekend when it all starts for real and hopefully the 3 new players that KK has been talking about.

Daiv, smith has been a waste of money! hasn’t scored a competative goal for 3 seasons! I’d take £1 million just to get him off our books!
just feel KK is just playing a tactical game with the media! just to big him up! thats what I hope! we are desperate for a new striker! would consider someone like Cisse as he scores goals knows the premiership and would cost about what we paid and pay in wages! but there are plenty of others to choose from just hope we get a good one!!??

Just watched a compelation of bangoura goals from you tube. He looks exactly the type of striker that thrives in the prem, and i am also convinced its him in your pic tt, along with everyone else lol. He’s strong, bit of a poacher but can also create his own chances. I can scrape up a few quid, if we all chip in we can maybe put together a decent fee for him

Just think, he had a right foot to go with his left, he’d probably be our best player. Class on the left side, but let’s be honest, he’s a two-trick pony. Just happens to be really good at one of them and capable at the other.

dunno if its been said….but those “fans” who booed Alan Smith when he came on as a sub, well, you can go somewhere else because you are not welcome. How does that help our club..???….He may be a poor player, but he gives 100% and should be supported. Its the problem of the management who wont/cant sell him or keep plwayin him thats the problem. But if he plays he deserves the commitment he shows on the pitch.
Be ashamed….and i dont care if you throw years, and games, and players at me…..be bloody ashamed. I was.

Well said Vin… I was at the game today and was not happy at the booing which only seemed to come from the ultras in the top of the gallowgate.
Pathetic and disgraceful IMO
Yes Smith is not performing 100%, but while he has a Toon shirt on he gets my support.
I was so wishing he would score after that just to shut those tossers up.
What must Coloccini be thinking ????
These so called supporters are no better than Barton at bringing shame to our great club.
THINK ON.

Alan Smith undoubtedly has talent
its why Alex Ferguson bought him
its why sam allardyce bought him
its why david moyes wanted/still wants him
i think the real reason for smith’s decline in form is probably because of him logging onto newcastle blogs just like this and reading to what douches like HPS have to say, give him a chance
There are so many great players out there who have had poor first seasons with clubs
i know Smith has been any thing but mind blowing this season but like with all players a bit of confidence goes a long way
now do you think booing him will make him want to give his all and score for this club? no
cmon, get a grip

i was sat just below the ‘ultras’ at th ematch today….and was ashamed when they booed smith. fair enough he hasnt been putting in the performances, but if anything, hes been trying to hard, which just makes him play worse. i would like 3mil for him, but i would not boo him on the pitch (or any toon player)!
the other thing i noticed about the ultras was that half of their chants were impossible to understand….due to the fact that the majority of them are vile little chavs who cannot annunciate their words correctly.

smith has had plenty of time to pick up his confidence and produce and he still has done nothing ud think hed even grab himself a goal pre season
the leg break took an edge out of his game . playin in midfield made him disillusioned with his game.

im with you rich, smith is poor and i was completely wrong about him when we signed him, awful signing.
114 Tom_Toon // Aug 10, 2008 at 1:36
Bangoura, agile striker, you’d class him as a ’small striker’, likes running on the wings and taking on players, has a good finish, got a fair deal of pace, he is an agressive player, not overly agressive but he has a bit of a bite to him; something that makes a player IMO.
115 Spyro // Aug 10, 2008 at 1:39
well by the sounds of that i hope your right TT, can he play AM, if he can then you are probably right about him being at the PSV game
116 richie // Aug 10, 2008 at 1:39
bangoura plays for dynamo kiev, young african player plays up front and can play wing,, saw him live against drogedha utd in dublin,,,,
he was the best player on the pitch,,if i was to compare him to someone on that 90 mins,,say style of play james mcfadden but better and more powerful

Smith deserved to be booed.
50-60 grand a week, not a single goal in over 3 years.
Gets booked every other game.
Carnt pass, tackle, head the ball, hold the ball up, beat a man?
He’s a joke & he’s an embarresment to the Toon, not those who booed him, me being one of them.
The sooner the mug is out of SJP the better.
When he is in the team, its worse than being a man down.
A shockingly bad player that is completely & utterly finnished in top flight football.
Come on Everton, take him off our hands!!!

Gutierrez-Barton-Guthrie/Butt-Milner/Zog

125 Spyro // Aug 10, 2008 at 1:47
Rich our midfield lacks one creative CM/DM in my opinion. Butt needs competition. However, the player needs to be able to pass a ball well.
I personally think our best current mid is
Duff/Zog————-Milner————Gutierrez
————–Guthrie——Barton—————-

why do so many people qoute players wages?
it’s not there fault..aye all us normal folk know these people are horrible show offs, but they have alwys been like that they have a talent we have not.but holding there wage against them is unfair..alan smith does not deserve the hate campaign that is being reigned against him now.whether you rate him or not.its sick,i seen it with my hero chrissy waddle as a 14 year old.and couldnt understand then..howay man the lads doing his best

143 Mitch H // Aug 10, 2008 at 2:13
Mick,
I’ll boo & berate a player when they consistently let the team down.
Smith makes us a worse team every time he plays.
He’s had his chances, he’s failed miserably.
Its time for him to be dropped & sold, hes finnished as a top flight footballer.
Whether hes a good lad or not is irrelivant, he’s a very poor player, & he’s holding us back every time he gets a game, because our play breaks down nearly every time he gets the ball.

there was a player called neil mcdonald, who gafted his bollocks off to get in the first team, around the time keegan was playing for us.
the toon fans treat him awful, even though he was a local lad, gazza was different he had the raw talent .but this lad grafted and when we finished 8th in 88 it was an achievement, believe me but the unsong hero was neil mcdonald. smith doesnt look the part thats all its not lack off effort

How many Goals did Makelele score during his time at Chelsea, i dont know exact figures here but im guessing its really, really low and he was there for years.
take into consideration it’s Alan Smiths FIRST season with us, ok ok he might of scored no goals
as far as i can remember makalele couldnt head, could rarely beat a man, could barely shoot, might of been able to pick a pass or two, waowwwww
i dont know what sort of wages he was on either but im guessing it was more than Smiths 60 grand
what im trying saying here is makalele was being paid more than Smith, getting higher praise than Smith and playing more than Smith becasue he was good at his only task which was of course to get the ball when we dont have it
I beleive Alan Smith is not naturally a striker (the shock) i think he should divert to a cm dm role like makalele, and like which he did at united a few times, which i believe suits him perfectly, all it would need is some moulding, i mean all the guy does is commit, and tackle everytime he’s on.
153 Lew Davies // Aug 10, 2008 at 2:31

If the positive for Smith is that he puts in 100% then we’re in trouble. I’d be hoping every single player was putting in 100%, 100% of the time.
No one should be being booed like that though. How do you expect to bring new players in when the players see the fans acting like that? Who’s gonna wanna join Newcastle?

what pisses me off is when everyone updates their best 11 each time a new player is linked and post it to us as if it was something they had come up with ingeniously instead of it being something that was force fed to them by tabloids
i also hate when people mis-spell player names. takes ten seconds to learn how someone’s name is spelled, and just type it that way. collochini will not be signing for us but coloccini will.

interesting side note for those questioning derdiyok’s scoring record, early in his career he was used mainly as a substitute, in his career at basel he averages about 48 minutes per appearance, so those 44 appearances are about 22 full games, with 11 goals, a much better line.

165 The Entertainers // Aug 10, 2008 at 9:21
First off, what a spot Tom Toon !
Certainly looks like the guy from Kiev, but when was the photo taken?
Have never heard of the lad, but seen the edited highlights on You Tube. Even i would look good on there. Having said that the lad has skill, but does look similar to Oba and a younger Owen. I am firmly in the ‘we need a big lump of a striker’ camp! Would love to see Derdiyok.
Regarding the lad from Kiev i heard he plays on the wings too, but could he be the creative midfielder we are after to ?….i just dont enough about him.
However if the scouting team rates him, then thats good enough for me. The 3 lads we have brought in so far were all relatively unknowns to me and all have impressed! Looks like Wise and co can spot a player, Wenger watch out…lol
On Smith, the lad has talent and bucket loads of it. He was terrible last season and can play 10 times better. I for one would not be disappointed if he stayed as i believe Kev is the right manager to get the best out of him.
Lets not forget Sam destroyed his confidence last season playing him as a striker, midfielder, winger and DEFENSIVE MIDFIELDER !!!
Smith is a forward and should be played there. As for the booing, get a grip the lads out there in OUR shirt and when i’ve seen him he always is committed. Shame on you all that booed a NEWCASTLE UNITED PLAYER.
Any negative chants etc should be kept for before and after games, as a way of telling the club how fans feel, NEVER DURING!
As Newcastle fans we really dont help ourseleves and we are classed as the most loyal football supporters…..remember our chant lads?
166 Nick Dryden // Aug 10, 2008 at 9:26

Fergie got rid of him after his injury.

167 valle // Aug 10, 2008 at 9:31
Vin… I agree mate, the melonheads that chose to boo does no good for our team whatsoever. If KK likes Smith then he will stay, so they should get behind their freakin team instead bitching.
168 valle // Aug 10, 2008 at 9:35
Nick Dryden…
“Fergie got rid of him after his injury.
Allardyce is a joke manger
KK is having a senior moment !!”
Fergie wanted him to stay, but he wanted to be in the starting 11 and Fergie couldnt promise that, so get the facts right. KK, knows what he is doing, and he has proved with Duff that he can revive our lost ones.
Anyway, i dont care whether people like him or loathe him, but as long as he is our player he shouldnt be boo’ed. That is second rate supporting and shouldnt be connected with the great toon army.

170 Lamesley Mag // Aug 10, 2008 at 9:42
The booing of Newcastle United players should stop although Smith has not done anything to deserve better; has he?
I can see why KK wants to keep Smith, we don’t have anyone better at this time and if Owen doesn’t sign a contract extension, expect him to leave soon…..
If KK can motivate Smith to play as we know he can, we should keep him. I just don’t think Smith is good enough; sorry!
171 Spyro // Aug 10, 2008 at 9:46
oh for gods sake, why are people going on like Smith was booed because he is s**t!? thats clearly not the reason as he has been crap for the whole season and never been booed. He was booed because of the Everton links, common sense
172 valle // Aug 10, 2008 at 9:47
Lamesley Mag…
Well… It depends… He hasnt scored, so he shouldnt be in the team if Owen, Dukes or Oba is ready… BUT… He does try his best and he works hard, so i wouldnt say he derserves the boo’s.
173 valle // Aug 10, 2008 at 9:50
Spyro…
Your dreaming, the Everton link has nothing to do with it, if that was the case then maybe the boo boys should have a little look at Oba. spyro-i think it was more the fact he was replacing oba, and he’s shite, that they felt the need to boo him.
dont agree with it at all to be honest. yes he has been terrible for us but he wears the colours, so no need to boo him.
there was a point where he was infront of goal, 1 on 1 with the goalkeeper, and instead of shooting he looked to pass it forward to duff running on. he was literally 15 yards from goal. that shows how low his confidence is.
