There’s just 6 days to go to Newcastle United’s first game of the season at Old Trafford, but Newcastle still haven’t got the registration through for Jonas Gutierrez.

Jonas Gutierrez - registration still not through
While Jonas has been allowed to play in friendly games, he will not be allowed to play on Sunday unless Newcastle get his registration through this week.
This all goes back to the initial deal on July 3rd, when Real Mallorca were less than happy that Jonas, with Newcastle’s assistance, was legally allowed to buy out his contract.
It was using FIFA’s article 17 of the transfer rules and is often referred to as the Webster law.
It is named after the Scottish defender Andy Webster who left his club Hearts in the summer of 2006 for Wigan Athletic, a year before his contract ended, and when Hearts appealed the case claiming £4M in compensation, Webster won his case and set a legal precedent by paying Hearts his remaining contract amount.
After the Gutierrez transfer, Real Mallorca appealed to FIFA, and as far as we know that appeal is still pending, and we expect that’s the reason the Spanish Club is still holding onto the registration.
We believe that is the current situation, and we wish it wasn’t so.
However, we believe that unless Newcastle can force through his registration in the next six days, Jonas will not be able to play on Sunday.
We need some clarification from the club on what the current situation is.
Comments welcome.

Poor management
2 Spyro // Aug 11, 2008 at 11:30
its not poor management, what can the management do? His old team are trying to spite us because of how we ripped them off, we just have to wait. Blame FIFA if anything, they take far too long with apeals IMO

off the topic but did anyone hear that WEnger said that he wouldn’t buy any more midfielders b4 the start of the season…….If we want to get Inler it appears that the door has just been opened 4 us to snap him up!!!
5 toonfan1 // Aug 11, 2008 at 11:33
he will probably have his registration through before the manutd match. if not then we still have milner, zog and duff to choose from down the wings but would rather have jonas
6 xfer // Aug 11, 2008 at 11:33
It would be a disaster to say the least, playing without Gutierrez. Watched Man U last night, they have a very strong midfield and a battling team. If we want to get anything out of the game, we need to hold our line.
Not expecting much from the game, but then again, i believe if there is a good time to play Mau U, its this Sunday.
7 BenjiToon // Aug 11, 2008 at 11:36
Hang on, hang on. Just because the club haven’t said anything about this doesnt mean its a problem. Keegan said quite clearly that Jonas would only be able to play in the Mallorca cup if the registration was through. He did play, in the first game and of course two home games since.
I might be wrong but a player registered to one club can only play for another in friendlies if the club holding the registration gives their permission - presumably there’s some document they have to produce. (That must have been the case wiht Bassong right?) For competitive games a club must hold the registration or have a formal loan agreement witht the resigtration holding club.
If that’s true, then either Mallorca have allowed us the play Jonas without his reg, which would seem very unlikely if they’re in dispute with us, or we hold his reg already.
Clarification would be helpful but Ed, please don’t join in the scaremongering and panic that the press keeps throwing at us. We rely on you to keep a calm head over these things.

It’s not just the Manchester game I’m worried about. If we don’t get his registration by 31st August, we won’t be able to play him till January at the earliest and I wouldn’t bet against such a scenario unfolding. It’s just the sort of farcical situation that occurrs time and time again at this club.

Dont quite believe Enrique will start against Man U. Zog will probably start at LB. Gutirrez in the team unless registration problem persists.
Other than that, James, i think you got the right way we’ll start against Man U.
After Duff’s recent performance, and his consistent inability to dribble past defenders on the wing, he’ll play as a support striker for Martins.

26 James // Aug 11, 2008 at 11:59
Not convinced Guiterrez will start at Old Trafford, KK likes to bring his players in slowly, and throwing him at Old Trafford ahead of Milner is not a KK move.
Coloccini will be a toon player by tomorrow but he’ll never start at Old Trafford. Far too big a game for someone who hasn’t played for us yet.
Be very surprised if he picks Zogbia at left back because he never defends and we need a solid defence
Of course, if rumours become fact, then JOE COLE may well be making his debut….

I really find this hard to take. Firstly this registration fiasco with Gutierrez and now the longest running transfer deal in living memory for Coloccini.
I know that the Gutierrez situation is proberbly down to FIFA but what is happening with the Coloccini deal?
NUFC need to inform the fans as to why this is dragging on for so long. Is there an underlying problem somewhere that we need to know about.
All these problems dont help Dennis Wise`s case as our main man when it comes to transfer dealings.
Come on NUFC get your fingers out.

“It’s important that the supporters are with us so that when an away team comes to St.James’ Park they know that the fans are behind us,” the 25-year-old told nufcTV.
“I know already that we have very good fans and my first two games at home I have enjoyed very much.
“I hope the fans like me and I was happy to help get the win against Valencia.”
Indeed, it was from Jonas’ expert centre that Steven Taylor’s rebounded header was smashed home by Milner for a dramatic late winner.
“It did not matter who scored or set up the goal, we were all just very happy to get what was an important win,” he added.
“That gives us confidence going to Man United next weekend.

this blog isnt panicy spyro………even you have to admit that this is a right balls up over the registration of spiderman. for those of you that say his registration is through as he needs it to play in friendlies are wrong. just check out kk’s last comments on it - he says its not through and that we can not play him in any real games until his old club release the paperwork. i am pretty sure they wont be doing us many favors too eh!! they might hang onto them until the results of their appeal to fifa over us. that would name sense. In which case, as one bloke said, we have two weeks otherwise its next year in jan before we can field the guy.
42 Spyro // Aug 11, 2008 at 12:33
how is it a balls up if it is out of our hands?
we got him for dirt cheap when we should have paid around 9 million for him, if Mallorca want to hold on to his registration until the appeal is dealt with then we can only wait. I would rather get him in for cheap and risk him not taking part in the first game or two as we have sufficient enough cover for him.

51 bailey // Aug 11, 2008 at 12:50
Agree people on this website (including me) get very panicky.
Think this registration issue is out of NUFC hands and held up at Mallorca end because they are exploring legal avenues or just downright awkwardness and brinkmanship.
Collocini issue was I believe down to Spanish end as well playing games regarding amount of transfer.
According to Setanta Arthur Cox left us due to fall out with Dennis Wise - if that is the case then why is it so hard for someone to confirm it.
KK does seem to be playing the ” I dont know” card much too often. Perhaps this is by design but it certainly doesnt help those of us who thrive on the feedback from NUFC. Perhaps we are just too selfish.
I have to admit that I was one of those who was starting to have doubts about Ashley but his recent comments especially transfer backing for KK (and his continual reference to KK) cannot be faulted and to me anyway it seems he is obviously committed to the cause and I dont see anything amiss in him seeking outside investors to help him create a bigger financial base to move the club forward.

I just wish people would remember that Shola has done a lot of good for this club and the reason he now is the footballing equivilant of a chocolate teapot is because he played for 6 months and scored many vital goals with a career threatening injury.
His commitment alone shouldnt be laughed at when we have had players like Babayaro, Carr, Luque & Marcelino in the not so distant past who were happy to take money without playing.
At least Sholas got some fight left in him and he certainly still looks more of a threat than Smith does even without any of the ability he had a few years back.

- Last season he only played 90 mins 12 times for Chelsea

Coloccini will be unveiled Wednesday possibly alongside two unamed players who we’re working hard on getting in. Smith is guaranteed to stay as Keegan likes his whole attitude around the club, Arthur Cox did NOT leave after an argument with Dennis Wise as Wisey has nothing to do with any of the playing or coaching staff - his job is specifically to find players between 16 & 19 nothing else! And Guttierez will play against Man Utd. Fact.

we need this guy on the pitch and match fit. i’m starting to be a little concerned about the amount of players we have which won’t be match fit and used to playing and working with each other come the start of the season.
this always makes it a much slower process of getting to the top of your game, I feel since COLLOCCINI’S transfer has dragged on you can certainly add him to this list as well.
68 James // Aug 11, 2008 at 13:13
CRAIGG - A major signing was at SJP yesterday allegedly having a medical and photo shoot in new kit. Nobody has a clue who it is.
But the general consensus seems to be that it was JOE COLE. Here’s a list below I posted earlier suggesting who it might be :
The MAJOR signing theory:
XAVI - Publically states he wants to leave Barca, and is the Spanish Gerard. Long shot but EXACTLY the player we need.
Cost £25 million
CARDOZO - Benefica want to sell him and we had a £15 million bid turned down at the start of the summer (allegedly)
Cost = £20 million
BERBATOV - A lot of people still think Ashley is going to bid big for the Spurs man
Cost = £25 million
ARSHAVIN - Only Newcastle and Spurs being linked but Spurs refusing to bid the £24 million asking price….have Newcastle matched this bid?
Cost = £24 million
ARDA - Been linked with Newcastle for six months and if you believe reports earlier in the summer we had two bids turned down
Cost = £13 million
GOMIS - KK and the board all flew to watch him play before the Euros. The only player we know they’ve done this for.
Cost = £10-12 million
JOE COLE - Surplus to requirements at Chelsea and Villa have already tabled a bid (allegedly). Wants first team football to stay in the England world cup team
Cost = £18 million

106 CRAIGG // Aug 11, 2008 at 13:50
I cant see Faye playing as he hasnt figured at all despite KK giving both time off after internationals, Geremi has started 5 friendlies.
He maybe injured but i think there was truth in the rumour about him returning to the north-west.
I personally think Taylor and Cacapa will start against the mancs.
107 Jay K // Aug 11, 2008 at 13:50
medicals aint even done @ benton all dun up @ jesmonds nutfield
108 James // Aug 11, 2008 at 13:51
Cooper - the leaks said it was XAVI
yes, i know that’s even harder to believe than Joe Cole.
Nobody knows who it is, but based on Big Willie’s other predications throughout the last year I believe him when he says a major signing is coming this week.
109 Punk Skunk // Aug 11, 2008 at 13:51
Me either Spyro, no clue!..
…But i’m with you, we’re doin’ fine…A couple more & we’ve got a TEAM!..
…Agree…Midfielder of the creative variety, please!..
110 Edd Case // Aug 11, 2008 at 13:52
Well, we’re definitely not signing Joe Cole - if you watch Sky Sports, you’ll have just seen him at Stamford Bridge in an open training session.
111 Punk Skunk // Aug 11, 2008 at 13:53
Hope we keep Faye!..
112 brave new toon // Aug 11, 2008 at 13:54
derdiyok seems the popular choice, although i’m still interested in tt’s spot, the lad in the stands..
i’m sure it was him, and he looks decent.. why was he there? and why haven’t the papers or ssn picked up on it?
Also how long do i have to wait for the sun to put guthrie and Jonas in the dream team?
113 CRAIGG // Aug 11, 2008 at 13:55
I would be after a quality holding player lke De Jong to replace Butt long term and Allow Barton/Guthrie to get forward and give us the goals weve lacked from midfield since Gary Speeds early days.
114 Dan13 // Aug 11, 2008 at 13:55
Who the hell is this ‘Big Willie’
115 Spyro // Aug 11, 2008 at 13:55
me too Skunk, Faye is a brute and i would really like him to stay
116 Edd Case // Aug 11, 2008 at 13:57

Who the hell is this ‘Big Willie’
He’s Free Willie’s older brother
117 Spyro // Aug 11, 2008 at 13:57
personally i like the two CM formation over the diamond formation.
Duff/Zog———————————–Guti
———–Guthrie——Barton————–

big willie style from the fresh prince of bel air
119 James // Aug 11, 2008 at 13:58
Big Willie is one of the people that posts on this blog and has a strong source at SJP. His posts about signings are always spot on.
He never said a name, just that it was a MAJOR signing, along with Colocci and the Swiss striker.
120 Dan13 // Aug 11, 2008 at 13:58
Faye is clumsy
And for a big man he spends a lot of the time on the floor wailing in pain.
121 Dan13 // Aug 11, 2008 at 13:59
cheers james
122 JC // Aug 11, 2008 at 13:59
Where is everyone getting this news of a MAJOR signing being unveiled tomorrow with coloccini?
123 James // Aug 11, 2008 at 13:59
Look at the Gunthrie article for evidence about Big Willie’s predications.
124 brave new toon // Aug 11, 2008 at 13:59
Why does everyone put Faye in front of Taylor? Pre season for talys was excllent.. I would say pairing him with Colo on a consistant basis will bring him on to the next level.. and i expect 5 - 7 goals from him also
125 Dan13 // Aug 11, 2008 at 14:04
Anyone know when we’re meant to be getting the season tickets???
Mine was a real bargain!
£130!!
Woop Woop

127 sweendog // Aug 11, 2008 at 14:06
its says “He also has 3 feet which makes him an excellent dribbler.” shows you how reliable wikipedia is
128 Lesh // Aug 11, 2008 at 14:06
C’mon James….. KK likes to bring his players in slowly (see 26)? Just like Tino at Boro eh?
Maybe he’s learned how to play mind games with the master?

James - Big Willie has been posting for a month at most, he is hardly always spot on too.
133 Spyro // Aug 11, 2008 at 14:13
check this if you want to know why People put Faye
ahead of “Tayls”. I agree that is a bad nickname, cant we just call him Taylor.

Cooper .. at least that clears up that turkey .. you can always dream but theres no way newcastle will get arguable the best DM in the world .. when we’re not in Europe ..
135 booney // Aug 11, 2008 at 14:18
guys i know major signing this week is arshavin
136 Tom_Toon // Aug 11, 2008 at 14:18
Xavi a DM? No way.
He is box-to-box, undoubtedly the best passer in the world (short and long) and one of the most underrated players in the world.
