Ameobi In The News For Two Reasons

August 11th, 2008 by Ed Harrison · 244 Comments

Newcastle striker Ameobi is in the news for a couple of reasons today.

shola-ameobi_543604.jpg

Shola Ameobi - in the news for two reasons

The first piece of news is that Shola seems to have recovered well from the injury he sustained in Mallorca, and he will return to full training this week.

Kevin wants to play a behind the scenes game on Thursday, to give some of the players extra match practice. Those who are short of it, and the players involved could be Michael Owen, Fabricio Coloccini (if he signs for us by then), and now Shola will also probably play in that game.

Kevin talked about Shola today to the Shields Gazette:

“Shola will be back in full training this week,”

“It’s not as bad as we thought when he came off in the first game in Mallorca.”

“He’s started light training, and will be back this week.”

Not that Shola’s form has set the fans alight this pre-season, since he’s looked sluggish at best.

The second bit of news on Ameobi is that there are suggestions that Norwich City are back in for him.

Glenn Roeder could touch lucky, because it seems that not too many other clubs want to pay the £3M fee for Shola, and he could possibly strike a good deal with his former club for the player.

As it gets closer to August31st, we think Newcastle will be more likely to accept closer to £2M for Shola, so at least the club can get him off the wage bill.

There’s just no future for Shola at Newcastle, and it will be in the player’s best interests to find a club, where he can play week in and week out.

That’s what he needs, and he’s played very well for Roeder in the past, and we think he could do very well next season for the Canaries.

What do you think?

Comments welcome.

I think that Roeder needs to do us a favour :D

  • 5 Greg P // Aug 11, 2008 at 20:27

Glenn is obviously feeling that he owes us a favour - £2m for Shola would be a great deal for us. He’s not even championship class - but more effective up front than Smith. Hopefully both will go in the next week and make space for the young Italian and big Wesley when he’s fit again. No point having these sorts of players when you can bring the youth through

  • 6 Beatski // Aug 11, 2008 at 20:29

    nah, sloppy seconds for JoshNufc91

for ours and Ameobi’s sakes, this deal needs to go through, it will go someway to rejuvinating his career, which wont happen at newcastle

  • 7 ObaFan2 // Aug 11, 2008 at 20:29

Just go and play football somehere cos unfortunately you wont get many chances here.

Ed, every 5 minutes this is crashing :(

  • 8 church // Aug 11, 2008 at 20:33

I have heard from a source close to nufc, that there will indeed be a big signing by evening time tomoz …..fingers crossed

  • 9 Toon1978 // Aug 11, 2008 at 20:33

Obafan2 does it annoy you as much as it annoys me when this site goes down lol?

  • 10 Jacob // Aug 11, 2008 at 20:33

I think them comments are harsh, Shola was a treffic on his day. And personally i thought he played great in europe with Shearer. Yes, he didn’t get to the standards we hoped but he was a good player. Also remember he played for us even though he was injured.

  • 11 The Entertainers // Aug 11, 2008 at 20:39

If Shola goes would Kev get his way and keep Smith ?

Come on Stokey stump up the readies and get rid of him . sorry shola but you were never Premiership class mate , Heart of gold but no speed or tactical awareness…..

    villa agreed fee for cuellar

  • 20 D.C. // Aug 11, 2008 at 21:27

Agree, for Shola’s sake he needs to go and play somewhere regularly. He’s been loyal to the club but loyalty only goes so far, and he just isn’t good enough anymore.

  • 21 keegan is king // Aug 11, 2008 at 21:29

8million still get painful memories from signing a defender off rangers for same price

  • 22 Richard L // Aug 11, 2008 at 21:31

    Shola pal, just go man

  • 23 Nenad // Aug 11, 2008 at 21:32

What are the odds, Ameobi to score at Old Trafford next Sunday?

    Goin’ for it! :p

  • 24 Toonboy // Aug 11, 2008 at 21:36

    Cuellar’s off to Villa

  • 25 gorskino10 // Aug 11, 2008 at 21:38

Nenad whats the bets on that 2,00000000000000000000,0000000000000000000000000000,0000000000000000000000, - to - 1 lol.

He will be a good Championship player but hasn’t shown anything to suggest he can cut it in the Premier League, it could turn out to be a good buy for Roeder.

  • 26 Toon1978 // Aug 11, 2008 at 21:39

    Toonboy

Why are you gutted mate we have Collocinni.

  • 27 Lew Davies // Aug 11, 2008 at 21:41

Please please please!!!! this could be a real good piece of news for the Toon.
I dont care if it is only 1Mill just get him out of Toon asap.
Oh and good luck to him of course and no hard feelings, but this is what the lad needs also. He must realise he is never going to be first choice striker here. Where as he could be else where….(cough).
Sometimes though, I think he is just content picking up his wages every week and not having to do too much for it. Also he likes the status of being a “prem player”
Times up Shola. Move on while you still can.

  • 28 CRAIGG // Aug 11, 2008 at 21:42

What a moronic piss head Paul Merson is:

“Owens the best finisher in the league but Newcastle dont make enough chances for him”

Look at Owens goals to games ratio for Newcastle:

    05-06 =10 starts 7 goals
    06-07= 3 starts o goals
    07-08= 28 starts 13 goals

So 41 starts 20 goals, Just under 1 every other game.

If Owen starts the team will create chances for him, He has let down his team mates not the other way around.

Lay off the Smirrnoff you Tw*t.

  • 29 Ne5UFC // Aug 11, 2008 at 21:43

If you have a look on the official .co.uk website and look at the senior squad page…notice the gaps in the senior squad..two in defence and one in midfield..coloccini definately, Bassong/warnock maybe? Most probs bassong. As for midfield its anybodys guess..maybe not derdiyok then, but i really hope so, he seems a great prospect! Inler i think would be mint and i would say classed as a coup under arsenal’s noses! Could that be the 3? I still hold out hope of being swept along by this excitement and getting a ‘major signing’

(Tried posting this before but it never seems to work lol)

howay d toon army, lifelong newcastle fan ere but 1st time user nd viewer of dis site…..i must say ive enjoyed readin d various comments left by all, its gud 2 inspire enthusiasm even if it is false hope!! just by reading d comments it seems big willie is a trusted source, lets hope he’s right in all he says!!!

personally i feel ameobi nd smith are overpayed nd underachieve…dey must go even tho i must commend d effort smith puts in!! wat we ned is anutha target of d shearer/viduka mould 2 free up owen nd oba, a player lik gomis/ berbatov(neva gonna happen) or aston/ gudjohnson/eto woud b ideal!!! its important 2 ave 4 gud strikers nd fit ones at dat, unfortunatly owen nd viduka r 2 prone 2 injury despit der obvious class

in d midfield department, i lik d look of guthrie nd jonas but we badly ned a central midfielder, preferbly an attackin one, arshavin/ j cole/ xavi/ or mouthinho/veleso woud b ideal
it seems duff has cum gud finally, however its about time as i imagine he’s bin on top top dollar since he’s bin ere nd perhaps cashin in on him 4 sumone more promising lik arda woud b beta, he looked v gud in d euros!! also lets not forget d brillent job owen did playin in d hole at d end of last season!!!!

in defense i ave no idea wat d story wit colicinni is, y keep his arrival a secret wen it wud b more benifical dat he b trainin wit his new teammates, i hope he comes, he looks gud!! beye is a quality RB, taylor is also quality nd enrique dosnt deserve all d stick he gets, he finally came gud at d end of d season which is understandable 4 his age, dis is a big yr 4 him!! however unsur y we didnt go 4 shorey if a lb was a priority!! its just a shame we didnt get woodgate, he inspires confidence in d oda defenders!! it woud b gud 2 c anutha proven defender signed
i am a big fan of N’Zogbia but can he b trusted in a LB role

beween d sticks is fine as long as we keep given, i believe at d moment we ave 2 very gud keepers in harper nd given nd 2 up and comers in foster nd krul

as 4 chairman ashley, i do have faith in him, i honestly believ he will hand d money ova 4 quality players nd his youth team plans r fantastic, in yrs 2 cum we will b gratefull 4 it!! however i would like 2 c 4 additional players added 2 d squad - a L.B C.B, C.M nd a striker - i reckon d one striker coud replace ameobi nd smith 2getha!!

ideal team id lik 2 c kittin out 4 newcastle cum september

    Given

    Beye Taylor Collicinni W. Bridge

    Jonas/ Barton Arda
    Milner (wen he reaches potential)

    Arshavin

    Owen Eto

  • 37 CRAIGG // Aug 11, 2008 at 22:02

Not bothered about Cuellar now we have Colo but Villa are putting some side together.

I dont really like praising other clubs, But am i the only one who thinks Martin O’Neill is an absolute legend.

Dropped from being a double European Cup winning international player to non league Wycombe and won 2 FA trophies, The conference league title and then the 3rd division play off winners.

Took Leicester up to the top flight and won two league cups, got them into europe and finished in the top half every premiership season he was there.

Broke the Rangers monopoly and won 7 Trophies with Celtic and got to their first european final in 30 odd years.

Villa IMO will win the UEFA Cup this coming season.

He is a footballing genius and the idiot FA should have been fired for letting him slip through their fingers.

Hes not flawless he supported Sunderland but no-ones perfect.

He is the best football manager in the world.

  • 42 Ross // Aug 11, 2008 at 22:13

craigg-merson only said in his opinion owen is the best natural goalscorer in the premier league, which to be honest, i’d agree with. alot of people would say (whether he performs or not) that going purely on natural ability, he’s the best goalscorer in the premiership.

  • 43 Dave // Aug 11, 2008 at 22:14

Some people are getting ridiculously over excited here…

    …Oops!.. :D

  • 45 AndyNUFC // Aug 11, 2008 at 22:18

i’d say Torres is the best natural goalscorer in the prem, remember against Blackburn when Owen fluffed atleast 3 chances that any decent goalscorer would have scored?

  • 46 Punk Skunk // Aug 11, 2008 at 22:20

Well if torres does what he did last season for another 10 seasons, i guess he’ll be ‘the best’, maybe…Got a long way to go yet!..

  • 47 Toony Soprano // Aug 11, 2008 at 22:21

    Josh nufc91 you are a n**

Shola aint no maradonna but he is our second highest scorer in europe, doesnt slag off the toon or conduct himself like shitbags like barton do - to say he is a disgrace means that you are just another fickle fan who jumps on the bandwagon

  • 48 CRAIGG // Aug 11, 2008 at 22:24

Ross i dont disagree with Owen being the best finisher.

He said the team dont create enough chances which is wrong and if he looks at Owens goals record given the number games he has played for the club his record is excellent and the type of player he is he needs service he cannot create goals for himself the way Henry used too.

    PUNK

Theyve brought in Luke Young, Shorey, Friedel, Guzan, Sidwell and soon Cuellar.

Add that to Ashley Young, Agbonlahor, Petrov, Laursen, Carew, Reo-Coker and Barry who looks like he is now staying, I think they are a striker or two short of challenging the top 4 .

They havent signed spectacular players but they will do really well IMO a bit like Everton over the last few years but with financial clout.

  • 49 Nathan // Aug 11, 2008 at 22:25

    Good News about Ruud!

I wonder if he blames Shearers influence for his departure or will he accept this time round that he is plainly a shit manager.

  • 51 Ken // Aug 11, 2008 at 22:28

As much as I like Shola it is time for him to leave as he has not improved over the last couple of years. I believe he will make a good Championship player.

  • 52 jeff // Aug 11, 2008 at 22:30

craigg I think you are wrong in saying owen let his team mates down….How has he done this????? by being injured??!!!! Im sure he deliberately went out to get the injuries he got in the past….Not!!!!!!

  • 53 Midjew // Aug 11, 2008 at 22:30

CRAIGG - I agree Aston Villa will do excellent this year.

Some GREAT players and Most English, Martin O’Neil is one of the Great managers, he runs a club how it sould be run.

  • 54 Ross // Aug 11, 2008 at 22:31

andynufc-i say owen, but torres too. for me they’re the two best natural finishers in the league, as far as im concerned, torres is the best striker in the world at the moment.

completly off subject, but i’ve just remembered this. did anyone hear andy townsend question whether arshavin is the best player sitting in the hole behind the two strikers, in the world? after 2 games at the euro’s?, i think kaka would have something to say about that, haha

  • 55 JJ // Aug 11, 2008 at 22:31

Owen is a good finisher, but far from the best striker because apart from finishing and good movement he offers very little.
Someone like Oba will score less per shopts taken but will create twice as many chances for himself and others.

  • 56 Punk Skunk // Aug 11, 2008 at 22:32

    Craigg,
Friedel is v good…Don’t know guzan…Glad we didn’t get shorey or young, they’re ok, but just!..
Not sure about sidwell, time will tell…Cueller’s pretty good, but can he adapt?..Ash young & gaz baz are quality & laursen is solid!..carew has good games & bad…agbon, we’ll see this season if he’s a one season wonder or not!..
    …Think we’ve got a better squad & better individuals & a better coach…Tho’ M O’N is good like!..

  • 57 Ross // Aug 11, 2008 at 22:33

all the pundits are tipping pompey to be the ones to watch next season, but to be honest bar crouch i have no idea who theyve brought in?
apparently they’ve baught the best of what is available though? :S

  • 58 furrygiblets // Aug 11, 2008 at 22:33

I don’t know about anyone else but i can’t stand that pious **** O’Neil and im glad we didn’t get him as manager.

  • 59 CRAIGG // Aug 11, 2008 at 22:36

Jeff i didnt mean it like that

Merson was saying that he is let down by his team mates who dont create enough chances for him.

When in truth Owens absence was the reason that we have stalled in seasons of late we have always created the chances but lacked a finisher and he has been injured a lot, Not his fault but the ammount of goals he has scored when he has played shows that nobody can blame his colleagues.

  • 60 Punk Skunk // Aug 11, 2008 at 22:38

Pundits ALWAYS take what they think are the safe bets…Still don’t rate portsmouth & they play at krap’nott’arf!.. :D

  • 61 sweendog // Aug 11, 2008 at 22:38

Owens one of the best finishers in the premiership .. just had a bad few seasons with injuries .. this year he’ll be top scorer .. as long as he stays fit .. put money on it .. he’s one of the only strikers around that can place the ball and shot with power .. torres has more pace than Owen but his shooting isn’t as good IMO ..
If you had a choice between them now it would have to be Torres.. but Owen in his prime against Torres .. Owen any day.

  • 62 Chris F // Aug 11, 2008 at 22:41

CraigG, just had to point out that it wasn’t O’Neill who broke Rangers’ 90s dominance, it was Wim Jansen :)

  • 63 Ross // Aug 11, 2008 at 22:42

i was watching video’s of tino the other night on youtube. there’s one compilation purely of his goals, and what i noticed now that im older and more able to appreciate him, is the fact that one on one with the gk, he just didnt miss.
another thing i noticed was how early he shot, if he ran onto a through ball, he’d be sticking it in one corner or the other the moment the gk was off his line, they had no time to close him down, touch of class that lad was!

  • 64 sweendog // Aug 11, 2008 at 22:42

This season .. if we get a top class midfielder and Derdiyok playing well .. we’ll be top 6 for sure .. as for Pompey .. its their home form that keeps them doing well but I think this season will be

    Man U
    Chelsea
    Arsenal
    Newcastle :-)
Liverpool (or the other way around)
    Villa
    Spurs
    Pompey
    etc

  • 65 CRAIGG // Aug 11, 2008 at 22:43

    Punk:

We have a really good side and an inspirational genius for a coach.

Man for man we are as good as Villa but we have been as good as every team that has finished above us barring the top 4 in recent seasons.

We need to show it on the pitch and we for whatever reason (injuries mostly) we havent for the past few seasons.

I just see Villa and maybe portsmouth doing really well but i can see us competing with and toppling some of Spurs, Everton, Blackburn and West Ham who all finished above us last time out.

Youre right though, Most clubs would kill for our squad and i think we will finish 8th - 10th this season, which is steady progress.

  • 66 Ross // Aug 11, 2008 at 22:44

sweendog-im really sorry mate but regardless of the signings we make, you’re surely dreaming if you think we’re finishing 4th or 5th this season.

  • 67 CRAIGG // Aug 11, 2008 at 22:45

    Chris F i stand corrected

  • 68 sweendog // Aug 11, 2008 at 22:45

Ross .. you can dream .. first 5 games of the season will set my realism in .. I realistically think we’re challenging spurs etc for top 8 … but if KK works his magic .. I don’t think I’ll be far off..

  • 69 Chris F // Aug 11, 2008 at 22:46

    sweendog, you’re mental mate ;)

much as i’d love to see us up there again, even if we do make this supposed ‘major’ signing, we’re not gonna be transformed overnight.

i think with the squad we have at the mo + coloccini, we’ve an outside chance of nicking a european spot, probably intertoto.

even with 2 other signings we’d still at best push for a uefa cup spot, and for me that would be a vast improvement on recent seasons.

  • 70 Soren // Aug 11, 2008 at 22:46

Definitly agree with CRAIGG. Aston Villas squad is beginning to form very nice, and they should do very well this year both in the premiership and in Europe. However, I wasn’t impress at all when they played OB in the Toto-cup, so they might have a great squad, but they are still human. Apart from all this jibberish i wrote, I would have Coloccini over Cuellar any day. We are still getting a no nonsense player in Coloccini, but Colo can also handle the ball very well.

Shola to score against Man Yooo

  • 71 Chris F // Aug 11, 2008 at 22:47

CraigG, no probs, just used to live up there and followed Celtic as my ‘2nd team’

Jansen was also the man who took Larsson to Celtic, so holds a fond place in the heart of every celtic supporter lol

  • 72 Ross // Aug 11, 2008 at 22:49

sweendog-i think 8-10th is realistic. if we have an excellent season, and injuries are kept to a minimum, top half is surely a target for us. but to jump from 12th to 4th with the quality throughout the premier league in a single season, it just isnt realistic sadly.

  • 73 AndyNUFC // Aug 11, 2008 at 22:49

Owen HAS to be in the box to score, and is only a shadow of his former self with his pace. Even then he isn’t the best at putting the ball away, Blackburn being a key example.

  • 74 sweendog // Aug 11, 2008 at 22:50

Chris F .. its all to do with good attacking football and getting results away from home .. watching the Valencia game made me think we definately top 8 .. and we’ll get a good few wins away from home, nevermind the atmosphere at St James making us unbeatable at home .. I’m gonna put £50 on us to win the “outside the top 4″ league .. thats only after the Man U game :-)

  • 75 Craignufc // Aug 11, 2008 at 22:50

i hope we get cuellar, quality defender.
    i hate villa! lol

  • 76 natedawg // Aug 11, 2008 at 22:51

  • 77 sweendog // Aug 11, 2008 at 22:52

AndyNUFC .. yep agreed he’s a shadow of his former self .. seeing as he’s injured again its looking ominous for this season .. but I still think you’ll not get much better finishers in the premiership ..

  • 78 furrygiblets // Aug 11, 2008 at 22:53

If we get a CAM and Target man in before the window shuts i fully believe a top 8 finish is realistic

natedawg 2mill - 1 .. good odds .. but as the old pun goes .. smudger couldn’t score in brothel

  • 80 sweendog // Aug 11, 2008 at 22:56

furrygiblets .. defo agreed .. 3-4 extra wins away from home (beatin the likes of west brom etc).. and 4-5 more wins at home (still not beating the top 4) .. that would make us top 8 .. easier than you think seeing that we can actually score this season compared to last..

  • 81 scottish mag // Aug 11, 2008 at 22:58

two signings to be announced tomorrow and paraded at the open training day, colo and someone else dont know who i just know they are a creative cm, i was told around 14m is the price

this is not from an “insider” just from a mate who is always clued up about wots going on or so he claims anyway

  • 84 SniffyPants // Aug 11, 2008 at 23:00

Shola should go - he is too tall for those tight little purple away gear shorts anyway - they would look like little hot pants on him, and that wouldn’t be good to watch

Theres only 1 CM I know of being tauted around for that price tag .. and thats moutinho

  • 90 RossNe5UFC // Aug 11, 2008 at 23:03

Well if it is around 14mil then would that rule out moutinho coz that was the problem for everton, sporting were holding for 18mil

RossNe5UFC everton only went to 14mill euro

    Craigg,
    i think that’s a fair assessment mate…
…& yea, we have had our injury problems in recent seasons…Would really like to see us get thru a season without too many, then i think we can match most teams…But i reckon we’ll know more after everyone has their team together, then we can get a truer picture of how it may pan out!..
…Like i said earlier, the pundits are always gonna ‘back’ the usual suspects…So i’m gonna be happier if we’re off their radar for a while…Know warra mean?..
…Should be an interesting season of football tho’, huh?..

  • 101 clinta // Aug 12, 2008 at 7:22

surely colloccini can’t play in a behind close doors match anyways can’t he/ he’s been training with us, is there any difference?

looking like cuellar’s a villa player now too, see how easy it is to rap up a top class player when you’ve got europe to offer, villa have brought a brand new back line this summer!

and people on here are still blaming MA for our transfer woes??

  • 102 tapir // Aug 12, 2008 at 8:13

were being linked with diego tristian this morning, not bad but wouldnt be my choice, only media speculation anyway. Keegan most recent interview he said there will be two more after Colloccini so sounds like we are close on two, and then maybe a few ins and outs towards the end of the transfer window, lets hope colloccini and the other two are unveiled soon.

  • 105 Born Again Geordie // Aug 12, 2008 at 8:29

For those of you commenting on the gaps in the senior squad photos on nufc.co.uk. It has been like that for a while since Carr, Ramage and Emre left. So I would not read too much into that to be honest. Just my opinion. Bring on the new signings !!!!

  • 106 toonfan1 // Aug 12, 2008 at 8:31

diego tristan is crap and is to old to play for the Toon as he is 32. imagine if he was the major signing. does anyone know what time these “signings” will be unveiled?

  • 107 Born Again Geordie // Aug 12, 2008 at 8:33

@ aaron d - Derdiyok & Colloccini are already signed and we have a big name ‘Coup Signing’ that are being revealed today and will be presented to the media at the open training session tommorrow. The credit for this information is Big willie who posted the information yesterday afternoon on another blog

  • 108 Nick Dryden // Aug 12, 2008 at 8:35

It should be great news. Villa offering 4m for Smith but you just know KK will reject it. What’s wrong with him these days?

Equally depressing is us allegedly offering 6M for Heskey (31 now)!!!!

Why can’t we just ditch Smith and get Derdiyok - it’s a no - brainer !!

Just imagine Collocini, Derdiyok and Fernandez!!!!!!

    Big Willie // Aug 11, 2008 at 15:57

Smith was expected to join Everton however failed to agree terms, this has since been resolved and he is expected to sign for them. Derdiyok is Smiths replacement and was expected to sign last Friday until the above happened re Smith he returned to Switzerland but was not included in their squad for Saturdays game, the MAJOR signing was at the training ground on Sunday however even though my contact knows who the player is he will not tell me as the club are keeping it under wraps. The latest today is that Colocinni, Derdiyok and the major signing are expected to be announced on Tuesday afternoon and to be presented to the fans at the open day on Wednesday. No doubt the reasoning will be shirt sales.

    WHO CAN IT BE :

FERNANDEZ - No, because he was playing football when the signing was at SJP.

DIEGO - No because he is at the Olympics.

JOE COLE - Not likely because he trained with Chelsea yesterday

XAVI - Was listed on Barca’s website on Sunday in the team section but was removed yesterday…
He is very unpopular in Barca right now due to the comments he made after the Euros about the Premier league being better than La Liga and proud to be Spanish. Was recently booed at the Nou Camp and is on the way out according to reports in Spain

MOUNTINHO - Right price range and available. Strong possibility

VELOSO - Right price range and available. Strong possibility

ARDA TURAN - Right price range and available. Strong possibility

QUARASMA - Right price range and available. Strong possibility

DEAN ASHTON - According to a lot of people at the Valencia game, Dean Ashton was there and was seen talking to Owen and KK after

ARSHAVIN - No chance, because he was playing football when the signing was at SJP

carlos cuellar is signing for ASTON VILLA, ITS ON THE SKYSPORTS WEBSITE,

Aston Villa have agreed a fee with Rangers for Spanish defender Carlos Cuellar.

Cuellar has been linked with a move away from Ibrox since Rangers lost their UEFA Champions League qualifier against FBK Kaunas last week.

Walter Smith had been hoping to keep the 26-year-old but Villa have now made a bid of 10million euros (£7.8million) which triggered a release clause in his Rangers contract.

Villa are now set to hold talks with Cuellar On Tuesday and he will officially join the Premier League club if he passes a medical.

“I came to Rangers due to the professional manner of their officials and management and their promise of success,” Cuellar told the Scottish club’s official website.

“Everything I had been told about this fantastic club has been true and last year’s Uefa Cup run is something I will never forget.

“My ambition has always been to play for my national team and I believe that playing in the biggest league in the world for Aston Villa will help me realise that.”

Cuellar moved to Rangers from Osasuna last summer and enjoyed a superb debut campaign, earning him the Scottish Premier League Player of the Year award.

Martin O’Neill has been busy strengthening his backline over the last couple of weeks and has already brought in full-backs Nicky Shorey and Luke Young.

Lads, there’s no use getting too much hope from rumour and speculation made on this site by some of the bloggers.

Trust what KK says. If he indicates any big ‘coups’ then I’ll be expectant but until then I’m just holding on to the hope that 2-3 players will come in to improve the squad generally. I’m not expecting any wonder-signings.

  • 128 James // Aug 12, 2008 at 9:20

Personally I am over the moon we didn’t sign Cuellar. There’s a reason Rangers only had to pay £2 million to get him….because he made loads of mistakes in La Liga. His reputation only improved in the Scottish league…hardly a test…

Coloccini is the real deal. World class defender. The Argy John Terry. Stunning signing for the Toon, and a good friend of Messi’s….maybe he can convince him to come here one day :-)

Having slept on all the Big W rumours yesterday, I am a bit calmer now and to be honest I don’t think anyone should be “embarassed” if the rumours aren’t true. It’s just great to have some speculation of this kind for a change. Much prefer to hear of a possible “MAJOR” signing, even if it doesn’t come off, than a 32 year old ex-Spain star who can’t run and wasn’t prepared to come to us two yers ago when Souness tried to sign him (Tristan BTW)

The Mail is saying we’re close to getting Warnock today, although I trust Big W more than the

  • 136 shearer // Aug 12, 2008 at 9:43

I think they are full of it and would urge everyone to not get excited as you will just be bitterly disappointed. Id love to be wrong and dont want to ruin the fun but it wouldnt be the first time some p!ss taker came on here with this nonsense. Allowing myself to speculate for a moment though, id rather have inler than any other of these ‘big’ names bandied around purely cos i think our team needs that type of player most and hes very good at what he does! I dont believe a word of this big signing lark though and will happily apologise if proven wrong. If we get coloccini in and one more then we should have a decent side and i’ll be happy with that bearing in mind how frustrating things have been thus far

  • 137 BenjiToon // Aug 12, 2008 at 9:46

On Ameobi - I agree he has been a dissapointment, especially since he got that nagging hip injury a couple of seasons ago…even the operation hasn’t sorted that out!

But to all those being abusive - SHUT UP! What do you know about the lad apart from what you’ve seen in the odd misquoted interview? Shola may have been born in Nigeria but I know several people who played with him at youth level and he has kept in touch with them all since he became a pro. He isn’t like a numpty who’s full of himself like Dyer was. Nor is he a nutter who disgraces the game like Barton.

He is one of the proudest Geordie’s I’ve ever met. He loves the club. And, you might be surprised to hear, he trains very hard and works through the pain barrier with his injuries…unlike some at the club who cry off at the slightest sniffle.

Yes, his playing style isn’t attractive. No, he hasn’t scored as many goals as he should or set the world alight with his skill. I just think all that is really sad given that, at 17, he was considered the best young player at the club…by everyone.

If he goes, and its probably the right thing for him and the Toon, then please have the decency to wish the lad well. I’d prefer 1 Ameobi’s to 11 Barton’s any day.

  • 138 James // Aug 12, 2008 at 9:48

Hey guys just had a thought on the signing:

MAYBE THE REASON IT IS A BIG NAME IS BECAUSE HE IS RUSSIAN…AND IT CAN’T FIT ON HIS SHIRT… :-)

  • 139 Macas // Aug 12, 2008 at 9:52

Big Willie is saying nothing really that hasnt been said by Keegan, all he is doing is giving us the time it is supposed to happen. We want 2 new players in before Sunday and its obvious they are not announcing Coloccini for a reason. It makes sense thay are holding back to announce a few signings at once. We have a left back on trial from Boavista so it’s likely the new signings will be a striker to replace Smith (if he is indeed leaving!), and a central midfielder. We bid big money for Modric so it seems likely a high profile creative midfielder is top of Keegan’s list. I doubted the rumours at first but its not like they are without some substance.

  • 172 Grim Reaper // Aug 12, 2008 at 10:37

Hi all. I’ve been reading this blog for a while so I thought I’d finally post as I heard some interesting news this morning.

There has been a massive reduction in sales of corporate box renewals so last night NUFC had a meeting with 20 corporate clients last night to try to get them to renew. Ashley, Wise and Lambidas where all there to give their vision for Newcastle. My mates, fathers friend was one of the people invited. It was supposed to be an hour long meeting but it went on for 3 and Ashely didn’t duck any questions.

    On Newcastle –
He was asked why he bought the Toon. He said wanted a football club but originally he was not interested in Newcastle simply because he never thought he could get it. His advisors rang him on the Friday and asked him if he was interested in the Toon, he said yes and they said he’d have to wire £150m there and then. By the following week he has also spent another 100m of his money to pay off the debts.
He doesn’t expect to make money as most premier league clubs haemorrhage it. Everton last season finished about 7th, spent nothing in transfers and still only made £2m, their chairman is getting sick and looking to sell. Apparently Liverpool are “in the sh!t” with no money. Benitiez has spent all his money on Keane and has no more for Barry. He also said under Shepherd’s regime NUFC could have quite easily gone under.

    On the papers –
Don’t believe anything you read in them, for example apparently the Sun had rang him a couple of weeks ago to ask about the takeover story that they where going to print . Ashley said it was rubbish but they still printed it anyway. The only press they do is the Sky Sports commitments. The only paper that they do talk to is the chronicle, however he said only believe them if the story is an “exclusive” and they are directly quoted.

    On Investors –
He is looking to sell 25%, preferably to Newcastle based investors. He would also be willing to loan another 100m of his own cash for transfers, this would need to be paid back. He doesn’t want any Asian investors because he doesn’t trust them (look at Man city) but would be willing to look at an African deal as no-one is doing that at the moment (offer them exclusive rights to market NUFC in their country) but there isn’t much taking off on this so far.

    On Keegan and Wise –
Keegan makes all decisions on players coming and going. All wise is charged with is bringing in 6 under 17 players a season

    On players –
Ashley wanted to sack Barton, Keegan said no as he said he was good at Man City and expects him to be a good player here.

Smith – Ashley wants to sell him to Everton, Keegan said no as he said he is the best trainer, very popular in the dressing room and thinks if he scores he will get his confidence back, become better on the fans will like him ala Nicky Butt.

Guitterrez – There was about 7 clubs in the Premier League after him, including the top 4 but he wanted to come here. Keegan is delighted with him as he thinks he is class.

Coloccini – said it’s a done deal. Keegan is thinking of playing him in midfield as a playmaker as apparently he is very good at it.

    On Transfers –
There is lots of money available but the trouble is attracting players because we are not in Europe. Keegan lists the players he wants and puts a valuation of them. They obviously try and get them for less but if the selling club wants more money it’s Keegan decision to say if they are worth more or not. There is no wage limit, if they think someone is worth 120k a week they would get it, but at the same time they won’t be held to ransom and offer more than that.

He still has to pay £3m a year for the next few years to Deportivo for Luque

Modric had agreed on terms and was willing to sign but as he was waiting at the Malmaison for the paperwork to be raised, Tottenham offered him a deal and he flew down to London, apparently Ashley is furious with spurs and Modric as once a deal has been agreed that should be sealed.

Aimar and his agent had agreed on 70k a week and they were delighted but his wife said no as she wouldn’t move here. Apparently they had a blazing argument in front of Ashley. He moved to Benfica for half the wages we offered him.

He said we should get 3 big transfers in before the end of the season and one of them is going to be such a nig name that no-one will believe it. He expects it to happen nearer the end of the transfer deadline.

Overall the opinion was that he was very convincing and positive, so much so that this guy has decided to renew his box. It sounds good that he is backing Keegan. I’m not sure about Smith and Barton, personally I didn’t want either of them when we bought them.
I guess the proof in the pudding regarding the transfers will be if we get these big names in. I hope we do because at the moment I think we will have another poor season as our squad is terrible and we are desperate for new players.

How is that bad news!? Its old news! Who cares about him? Colocinni is far and away a better player.

  • 174 Macas // Aug 12, 2008 at 10:39

You have to ask yourself why there has been a delay in the announcement of Coloccini. The club must have something up its sleeve. Like I said, we were prepared to pay big money for Modric so i firmly believe we will be getting one top class midfielder in before Sunday. The club are being so coy over the Colo affair that something must be going on behind the scenes!

  • 175 tommyy // Aug 12, 2008 at 10:43

If it happens, why couldn’t we have done it a week ago? that way they could all be ready for the Man utd game! I doubt we will even see Colocinni at that game, and i think it will be a disaster. I really, really wanted a full strength squad out for that game, cause we need it.

  • 176 Ross // Aug 12, 2008 at 10:44

tommyy-you’re right there have been endless times when we’ve been told something is coming/scheduled and by midnight we’ve been left empty handed!
robertsa-its really not that big of a deal, colo is far better

“Newcastle are closing on a deal for Blackburn defender Stephen Warnock despite Paul Ince insisting none of his squad is for sale.Warnock, who has played once for England, has become unsettled after hearing of Newcastle’s interest and is believed to be keen to speak to them.”

Its in the mail, So its probably b*llocks but i hope they are telling the truth for once.

Get this and Coloccini wrapped up and we then can get the midfielder we need, Then hopefully if we sell Smith and Ameobi another striker and were laughing.

waiting for a plane on hols in february was forced to watch rangers - cuellar will get ripped to bits for pace in the premiership, and it is a hell of a step up facing ronaldo as opposed to the level of forwards in the SPL

  • 179 Edd Case // Aug 12, 2008 at 10:48

Im glad we’re not signing Cuellar, Spanish centre backs and Newcastle don’t mix.
Seriously though, with Coloccini teaching the likes of Taylor, Edgar etc, I think we’ll certainly be better.
Faye is solid on his day too but another top centre back wouldn’t go amiss.

  • 180 Toon // Aug 12, 2008 at 10:51

So whose realised that they were all lies?

  • 181 9 Shearer // Aug 12, 2008 at 10:52

I love NUFC but I dont see anything coming up. Its just 10.45am but still nothing. Mid-day latest.

I have heard Warnock wants us so it means the trial kid didnt work out. He doesnt know English at all KK said.

    Big Willie tic…… toc…….

  • 182 tommyy // Aug 12, 2008 at 10:52

I think Faye and Colocinni will do for this season, Faye is solid and consistant. Colocinni is good at defending, good on the ball and a confident player - exactly what we need. I just hope he gets his head down and works hard, then i believe he will be a very good defender for us.

  • 183 Toon // Aug 12, 2008 at 10:57

Big Willie and whoever else said something was happening today will be laughing right now and wont be back on here
