Bad news today regarding Oba Martins, as it looks almost certain that he will now miss the opening game at Old Trafford.
Oba Martins – knee injury still troubling him
Oba is still concerned by his knee injury, and it looks like it’s just not right, so there’s no point in playing him, until the medical staff know what exactly is wrong.
The treatment could be another injection, although those seem hardly the right treatment, longer term.
There’s even word that Oba may be allowed to return to his native Nigeria, and spend some more time with his family again, following the tragic death of his mother a few weeks ago.
That would seem a common sense thing to do if Oba needs more recovery time.
But that will leave Newcastle short of firepower up front for Saturday, and it may be that Kevin will elect to play either Duff or Milner in one of the two striker positions.
The alternative of Ameobi and Smith would hardly give us any potency up front, with their current form, and with Duff and Milner both looking great in pre-season, we would expect one of them to get the nod up front.
We hope that Michael Owen – who is ready to play in a behind-the-scenes game tomorrow afternoon to prove his fitness, may still be able to make it and maybe a Milner/Owen partnership up front, wouldn’t be all that bad.
We’ll have to wait and see, but this seemingly makes it even more difficult for us at Old Trafford come Sunday.
Oh well – we can still get a result there.
