Since Kevin Keegan arrived back at Newcastle Steven Taylor has looked an improved player.
Steven Taylor – improving all the time
And Kevin thinks the youngster will only get better as he brings in competition for the places at the back, starting with Fabricio Coloccini.
Steven has played every minute of every game in pre-season, so he is ready for the big test at Old Trafford on Sunday, against the European and Premier League Champions.
With Abdoulaye Faye unfortunately missing with a slight injury, Taylor has played at the back with Claudio Cacapa, the Brazilian, and they will probably both play at Old Trafford, unless Keegan is confident that Coloccini is fit and ready to go, for that game.
Kevin talked to the official site yesterday about the England Under-21 captain:
“As the competition keeps getting tougher he needs to step it up and he has shown that he can do that,”  “I thought against PSV especially he was outstanding in everything he did and rightly picked up the man-of-the-match award.â€
“He’s been positive, he’s won headers, he’s defended well and he has used the ball extremely well.†“He’s played every minute for us in pre-season and, while ideally we didn’t want to do that with any players, Steven and the others who have featured a lot have never complained and have been fantastic.”
This will be an important season for Taylor, because it can be the season he comes of age at Newcastle, but he will need to be consistent, and form a good partnership with either Coloccini or Faye.
That’s three very good center-backs for just two positions available – which has to be good for the club.
