Are Newcastle Really After Dean Ashton?

There are some surprising media reports that claim Newcastle United manager Kevin Keegan is interested in West Ham and England striker Dean Ashton.

Dean Ashton – we’d be surprised if Newcastle are really interested

While we wouldn’t be surprised if Keegan brings in another striker before the end of the month, we’d be surprised if it’s Dean Ashton, who only recently signed a long-term improved contract to stay at Upton Park.

The fee mentioned is a whopping £12M, and we think there are better buys than Dean available right now.

Since we do think Alan Smith and Ameobi will move on before the end of the month, it does make some sense that Kevin would be looking at another striker, but our own personal favorite is Eren Derdiyok, the 20 year old Swiss striker, who would cost around £4M.

But the way things are moving on the transfer market – so very very slowly – Newcastle will need to get a move on if we are to get the players we need for next season.

And it us starting to look like some of our signings will go down to the wire – on the last day August 31st – as they did last year when we announced both Beye and Faye after midnight on August 31st.

It may be that Newcastle are interested in a West Ham player, but that could well be renewed interest in Anton Ferdinand, the center-back who has played with Steven Taylor for the England Under-21 side, and who is reported to have turned down a £40K/week contract offer at West Ham only this week.

That may be the player who Newcastle are really interested in, if enquiries are indeed being made by the club to West Ham United.

Still a deafening silence from the club, and we have to hope that we will announce a block of signings before Sunday – we certainly hope so – and we are keeping our fingers crossed and trying to stay positive.
