HT: Man United 1 Newcastle 1 – Magpies Hold Their Own

In a terrific display of attacking football at Old Trafford Newcastle were able to hold their own against the European Champions in the first half.
But they were definitely second best in the first 20 minutes and it was only three brilliant saves from Shay Given that kept them in the game.

His first save was after 7 minutes when he somehow saves a blank point header from striker Campbell, which he somehow saved with his head.

Then after 13 minutes he made a fantastic double save, first full length from Rooney and then he made another great save this time from Paul Scholes.

Then after being second best Newcastle incredibly went ahead when a corner came across from Danny Guthrie and Martins headed in a beauty from 7 yards out that was a great goal – right against the run of play after 22 minutes.

The Steven Taylor had to go off with what looked like a foot injury and when he was off Manchester United equalized after 24 minutes with an easy knock-in from Scottish International Fletcher.

Then as half time approached Newcastle started to attack more and this game was a typical Newcastle type game under Kevin Keegan – end to end attacking from both sides.

Newcastle were indebted to Given to be all square at half time and after a shaky start in the first few minutes Coloccini looked cool and good at the heart of the Newcastle defense.

Gutierrez also looked an exciting player with two left wing runs where he left the Man United defense for dead, and on his second run just failed to reach Martins with his cross.

The game is being played at a phenomenal pace, but the lads are doing us proud and you can hardly ask for more effort or passion from a Newcastle United side.

The second half promises to be just as good.
