The People is reporting today that Kevin Keegan is ready to sign Hamburg’s Cameroon left-back Thimothee Atouba.
Timothee Atouba – another left back target for Newcastle
The former Tottenham defender is available at a bargain price, and the reports are he would be only too willing to return to the Premier League and would jump at the chance to join Newcastle United.
Atouba had a strange season at Spurs from 2004-2005, where then manager Jol played him in several different positions, including left back and left wing, and it couldn’t have been judged a successful time there, so whether he will be more successful on Tyneside is an open question.
But Newcastle are searching for a specialist left-back and we think Keegan’s first choice is Stephen Warnock of Blackburn, but his club want over £6M for him in spite of signing the player from Liverpool for just £1.5M 19 months ago.
Sounds like greed to us – or they just don’t want to sell him – which is fair enough.
But Newcastle’s attempts to sign Warnock seem to have failed and the 6ft 3in Atouba, who is 26, would have no problem gaining a work permit.
It also turns out the only goal he ever scored for Spurs was against Newcastle – so not sure if that’s good or bad.
Atouba has played 23 times for Cameroon and Geremi will no doubt know him well, from playing on the Cameroon side with him, and will have talked about the player with manager Kevin Keegan.
Time is starting to run short in the transfer market, and it’s now that clubs need to decide who they want to sell and who they really want to buy.
So we do expect at least three new senior players coming into the Newcastle club within the final two weeks of the transfer window.
