Owen All Praise For Geremi and Given

August 24th, 2008 · 30 Comments

Michael Owen is learning very fast from his new mentor Kevin Keegan, and he was full of praise for both Geremi and goalkeeper Shay Given after yesterday’s 1-0 win against Bolton Wanderers.

Michael Owen - full of praise for his team-mates

Owen said after the game:

“Geremi is a fantastic crosser of the ball. As soon as he gets the ball, I come alive.”“There are certain players who maybe look for through balls or look for this or for that.”

“Geremi is the type of player that likes getting it out of his feet and crossing it quickly, and when players do that, it is delightful for strikers.”

“I try to get half a yard and spring, and I did.”

And we remember very well, the fantastic goal Owen headed in, during the first half against Sunderland at St. James’ Park, earlier in the year, when Geremi put a beautiful cross in for Owen from the right.

Michael must have had to run about 20 yards before thumping the ball in with his head, and don’t tell us Michael is not a good header of a ball, even if he is just 5′8″ tall.

It was another vital goal by captain Owen yesterday, and he got a warm welcome from the crowd, when he replaced the injured Oba Martins just after half time.  Oba looked all busy and action again yesterday - we love the guy.

And Owen’s goal came after a fabulous penalty save by our goalkeeper, Shay Given, who is obviously back to his brilliant best once again.

The penalty by Nolan was well struck low to Shay’s left, but the keeper was down in a flash to make the save, and then just as quickly kicked the ball away from the incoming Barton.

But it was a bad miss for Bolton at a crucial stage in the game.

Owen talked about Given:

“He has had a few injuries, but there is no doubting he is a top keeper. We are blessed with two fantastic keepers here, everyone knows that.”

“That was even more pivotal than my goal. He was fantastic and he is the hero.”

Good words from Michael, and he seems to have finally taken to the Toon, and we hope he signs his contract, sooner rather than later.

Next up for Newcastle is a tough Carling Cup tie on Tuesday evening at Coventry - anything but a defeat would be acceptable then - but we must progress in this Cup this season - and we can do that against Coventry.

Comments welcome.

Geremi is a good crosser of the ball, but he is not fast enough to be a winger, and too lightweight to be a central midfielder in my opinion, I don’t know where he fits in…

Geremi is a good squad player & that is all.

  • 6 King-Habib // Aug 24, 2008 at 16:14

Geremi is a very good versatile squad player.

He can play right back, as well as central and right midfield.

    Shocking set piece taker though!

1-0 is a win and 3 pts. we shld all be happy about that. whats really worrying is that we need the goal from a past-it and overpaid, yet-to-commit striker (according to some), assisted by a cross from a pair of “40-years-old legs” (Mourinho said to Sir Bobby), and (yet again) a magnificent save from a brilliant goalkeeper who has saved us from countless humiliation over the last 10 yrs …

As we have a lack of fit strikers at the moment, why dont we play Zamblera on tuesday night with Owen against a reasonable championship team like Coventry, and see how he gets on. If he has a good game and maybe sets up a goal or scores, it will give him the confidence he needs and shows the rest of the youngsters that its not impossible to break into the first team.

well dome MO our captain and he plays like one as well this result was a good one we dropped two points against bolton last year not this time though haway the lads

Well i’ve said it before and got shot down, but MO is right.

For every poor cross Geremi puts in , he follows it up with a cross and goal (ok the average might not be that good) but he IS QUALITY!

Check out last season when we were on our run and look at the goals Geremi was involved in. If he was not putting in crosses, he was starting moves.

Yes hes one paced and plays shocking crosses from time to time, but the lad is still QUALITY!

Ok lads, i’m ready for your backlash! ha ha

I agree entertainers. It’s bizarre how he seems to forget how to take a corner — consistently can’t beat the first man — then drops inch perfect balls on MO’s head. Talk about frustrating. We didn’t have a chance and he was overpriced, but despite spurs defeat to the unwashed at the weekend, bentley was firing in some wicked balls.

We looked better when Geremi came on down the right and looked better when he was playing instead of Milner last season too.

  • 18 Lew Davies // Aug 24, 2008 at 22:25

HPS - think you wrong about Geremi, he may not be good enough to start evry game, but he is defo a good squad player, and that is what NUFC need. He wont be gone next year IMO. He may actually play better knowing he is under pressure for his place.
Oh and that WAS a perfect cross AGAIN for MO.
    Frustrating is right tho!

Tried to post a comment yesterday but it went nowhere, guess there may still be teething problems with the new setup.
Shay did well and I was one of the doubters re. his fitness. I can’t see poor Steve getting a game if he continues to play at that sort of level although that near miss by Nolan left him a bit flatfooted, luck of the Irish? :)

Boy that was weird, there were no comments showing till I posted mine.

  • 23 MichaelOWaN // Aug 25, 2008 at 2:48

I think we have a good ratio of winning whenever those two are playing.

  • 24 matthewT // Aug 25, 2008 at 4:18

    well done owen.
hope you can keep this up until end of seasons without anymore injury :)

Sky showed Owen’s headed goals for Newcastle last night .It is only when you watch them you realise that Geremi provided all of the crosses. I’m not a big fan of Geremi but he does seem to provide the killer ball for Owen - my opinion of him has improved as a result.

  • 27 Davies // Aug 25, 2008 at 9:39

Love Geremi, but e wouldn’t be in my starting 11. Say what you want about his pace and his dreadful set piece skills, he seems to know exactly where to put the ball for Owen. I’d use him sparingly when we need to force a result.

I just wonder if all those owen haters who write in this blog now and again were cheering after his goal or if they still hate him……He is a goalscorer and goalscorers are what we need……Id rather have him in our team than against us………He’ll sign the contract….just wait until the toon are in full flow he’ll bang loads more in this season along with martins….Toon Toon!!!!!
