Newcastle Pursue Two Argentine Youngsters

9:49 am, Sunday, August 24th, 2008 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 71 Comments

The Mirror is reporting that Newcastle United, thrilled by the capture of Coloccini and Gutierrez, are now after two 20 year-olds from Argentina.

Angel Di Maria – 20 year old Newcastle pursuing

Argentina won the Olympic Football Gold yesterday and Tony Jimenez has been given the task of going after them.

The two Newcastle are now interested in are Angel di Maria of Benfica, and Diego Buonanotte of River Plate, who are currently both 20 year-olds, and of course will be good captures for the future for the club, and would also help to fill out our first team squad in terms of numbers.

As we know Mike Ashley is determined to entice young stars to the club, from all over the world, and there’s no doubt that Argentineans can play this game very well indeed.

It turns out that Di Maria scored the goal that ensured that Argentina retained their Olympic crown in a 1-0 victory over Nigeria in Beijing yesterday, in the final of the Olympic Tournament.

Di Maria scored in a tight game and was set up by a certain Lionel Messi, of Barcelona, and he was able to break clear and lobbed over Nigerian goalkeeper Ambruse Vanzekin, for the only goal of the game.

Diego Bounanotte of River Plate

The match was played in sweltering heat of 107 degrees Fahrenheit, and there were two breaks for water, so the players didn’t get too dehydrated.

FIFA top chief medical officer Jiri Dvorak said:

“It was necessary to give the players a break. We are worried about heat stroke.”

While Argentine players have not always succeeded in England, certainly Carlos Tevez and Javier Mascherano have set a trend, and Coloccini and Gutierrez currently look great buys for Newcastle.

The sign of a really world class player, is somebody who can settle in and get the job done quickly, and both Argentine players have done that at Newcastle, with special mention to Fabricio, who oozed class yesterday.

Everything just so easy for him, the way he stroked the ball about, but he seems to have great team spirit too as he looked ecstatic after Michael Owen had scored the only goal of the game – both players looked over the moon.

What a player this lad can be for Newcastle in the future, and he’s already bringing the best out of Steven Taylor, and two 20 year olds of similar skill to the two South Americans we now have at the club, will do very nicely, thank you very much.

Comments welcome.

  • 5 Leeg123 // Aug 24, 2008 at 10:06 AM

linked with him before he woulkd get in are team now coz hes good but we got a winger and he said he’s staayin in benfica 1 more season.

  • 6 Leeg123 // Aug 24, 2008 at 10:07 AM

i wudnt mind malouda but another winger

  • 7 xfer // Aug 24, 2008 at 10:07 AM

Di Maria is very quick, and has a sweet left foot. Good footballing brain too for one so young, as he scored a smart goal against Nigeria.

  • 8 Ben_BKK // Aug 24, 2008 at 10:09 AM

Would love it if we could get Di Maria, and I’ve got him on my FM08 team :P Haven’t heard of the other guy, but if he’s good enough for the Argentinian Olympics team he must be reasonably good.

  • 9 Toony Montana // Aug 24, 2008 at 10:10 AM

I have just posted a similar thread on BBC 606 regarding this Ed and I was informed by a chap named leegnufc that Di maria has already stated that he wants one more year at Benfica.

Dont know anything about the other guy but 2 words spring to mind – WORK and PERMIT.

  • 10 obaistheman // Aug 24, 2008 at 10:13 AM

I doubt it is true cos there is no proof, but i said that about 3 months ago when we were first linked to colo

  • 11 Ross G // Aug 24, 2008 at 10:16 AM

I cant see alot of truth to this. KK obviously wants a LB not Senderos, I laughed how everyone reported this. The reporter said to Keegan ‘So Senderos’s father say you and Milan are after his signature?”, KK said “So has would have two very good clubs to choose from then” and everyone thinks we are interested he was clearly joking. Since Milan have come out too and denied the rubbish. After the LB is addressed we are after another CM obviously creative and able to chip in with some goals. Di Maria is a LW and considering we could play 4 of our squad there would be a complete was of cash. Plus Benfica would expect silly money for him as he has been one of there best signings of recent times, so much so they have loaned Freddie Adu out. As for Buonanotte he is certainly a talent, and plays CM/LM although being 5ft 2″ and certainly not stocky its another issue especially considering the money they claim for players in Argentina Ever Banega was a good young player but after one season joined Valencia for a potential £20m. I would mind us bringing in some south americans but I dont think these are really likely or realistic. And more over out of our financial league. As for Malouda oh hang on where does he play oh yeah LM some writers need to start thinking before they publish there shite

  • 12 TOONADDICT // Aug 24, 2008 at 10:20 AM

Look two good players, is it true we are definetley after malouda or is it just a load of shite someone has made up?

  • 13 LarrikinDan (DannyG) // Aug 24, 2008 at 10:22 AM

Both players fit the new transfer policy of recruiting younger players.

Di Maria is a really good left winger but we don’t need one at the moment unless Duff or N’Zogbia left, I also think that Benfica want nothing less than 20 million for him! Would be a real coup though.

It would be nice to have some future stars in our team like Aguero, Messi et al. Players who become world class!

  • 14 Graeme S. // Aug 24, 2008 at 10:25 AM

I think this is just another gossip and wont happen.
I also hope we don’t sign Malouda, 12 million is too much for him.

  • 15 Geordie SPIDERMAN18 (GG7) // Aug 24, 2008 at 10:25 AM

omg, i hope this is true, they are both auwesome, di maria is absoloute gem, and so is Buonanotte. i hope the press are not just making this up, as i really like both players.

tom toon- you would have seen di maria few times more than me as of u s’porting benfica, what is your take on the lad?? also buonanotte?

  • 16 Ben_BKK // Aug 24, 2008 at 10:26 AM

Please get Di Maria, not only is he great, but I’ve got him on my FM08 team :P

  • 17 Nick // Aug 24, 2008 at 10:27 AM

This is exactly what we need to improve our squad. 20 isn’t that young these days. Fabregas anyone.

Yes we won yesterday but other than the 2 Argentines and a couple of others, we are still so lacking in top class players .

There are still so many people that need to be got rid of, both for financial and / or a lack of ability, over the hill or ‘’sicknote” reasons and not retained purely for sentimental reasons and to pad out the squad.

    1) Duff a waste of time on 70K a week and surprise surprise, injured again.

    2) Smith absolutely useless on 60K a week.
sell for 4M and save 12.5 in wages.

    3) Butt – aging now and more and more making potentially fatal errors. 50K a week!

    4) Barton – unavailable for large periods due to his many indiscretions and he probably stops a lot of kids watching and other players signing for us.
Barton is KK’s real blind spot. Get rid and save 12.5M in wages, especially as he’s not even playing for the forseeable!!

    5) Milner – you got to like the guy, but for 9M come on, no way is he that good!

    6) Viduka – another invisible man on 60k a week.
Hardly the overly committed type is he!

    7) Geremi – occasional good cross but his best days are behind him and he’s on 60K a week. Adebayor is on 35K. Who would you rather have? Another legacy of Shepherd’s stupid wage structure.

Taylor – I still don’t see it. If Nolan had scored, it’s a different story. Time and again Taylor makes really stupid dumb decisions. He’s very lucky to have Colo alongside him.

    9) Owen – what do we do with Owen? Yes he scored the winner and scoring is a very valued commodity.
However, despite being KK’s captain, Owen is uncommitted ( still won’t sign a new contract after months and months), appears to be greedy and self serving, has lost his pace and above all is extremely injury prone and won’t be seen for long stretches of the season.

    Bring on 2 more Argies.

  • 18 Darryl // Aug 24, 2008 at 10:31 AM

Its great to have the site back up! More to the point, its great that we are eing interested in younger players from argentina. Ano it means bot all, but Bounanotte is good on football manager.

  • 19 Ben_BKK // Aug 24, 2008 at 10:33 AM

Damn it’s getting annoying with the thing not posting comments when you make them, I posted nearly the same thing twice cause I thought my first post hadn’t worked…

  • 20 Faustino // Aug 24, 2008 at 10:37 AM

Can we just establish that player like Owen is a multi-national business. To call him greedy is to toally miss the point. There is a boardroom full of the world’s greediest agents surround him and THEY are the one’s that won’t accept a cut in THEIR commision. He will have very little choice in the matter.

  • 21 dick // Aug 24, 2008 at 10:39 AM

its a good idea bringing in young players for the future, but toon need players now, we dont have a fully fit striker in the squad unless you include smith, LB is a big problem and we need a top midfield player, but the length of time its taking to get players signed I just cant see this happening

  • 22 craig // Aug 24, 2008 at 10:43 AM

hpoe it true we need some players plus they are young

  • 23 Big Willie // Aug 24, 2008 at 10:45 AM

My source tells me we will sign Malouda for £12m IF Chelsea sign Robinho.

He also tels me we are close to signing Philipe Senderos, Wigan’s Antonio Valencia and Czech pair Michal Kadlec from Sparta Prague and Marek Jankulovski of AC Milan!!!

Trust me these will happen by the weekend!!

  • 24 sirjasontoon // Aug 24, 2008 at 10:54 AM

Love argentinian players and these two lads sound great…just hope we don’t end up with a Tevez and Mascherano situation as there always seems to be alot of contractual/passport baggage with many of the argentinian players.

Good result yesterday happy lad…now where’s the wow signing?

  • 25 sirjasontoon // Aug 24, 2008 at 10:59 AM

Excellent post Nick and i totally agree with you on all the comments…the players mentioned should be shipped out..I have a feeling Owen wants to go on a free transfer and I think he can start talking to other clubs at xmas.

I would much prefer 2 new strikers and get rid of viduka, owen and ameobi and Carrol as well.

  • 26 Tha_Game // Aug 24, 2008 at 11:02 AM

Hopefully there is some truth in this- Di Maria was the standout in the Gold Medal match

  • 27 AlexW // Aug 24, 2008 at 11:04 AM

hey guys, anyone who caught the game could you tell me how our new players got on? cheers

  • 28 Danny // Aug 24, 2008 at 11:07 AM

    Copy pasting Nick?!?!
Anyways, even thou we tie down Owen or not, im seeing Coloccini captaining our side next season…

  • 29 SuperShearer // Aug 24, 2008 at 11:11 AM

Both these players would be breathtaking signings but I think that we are unlikely to get either as both are tracked by the likes of Liverpool, Chelsea, Barca, and Real. If we could could get either or I would go and buy the recruitment a very large drink as these two are future world stars. I see today that we’re linked with Malouda if Chelsea sign Robhino…do we really need another left winger? He’s hardly be prolific for them and @ £12m i don’t rate him. Great to have you back Ed I thought I had lost the best NUFC site on the web….was over the moon when you came back.

  • 30 Leeg123 // Aug 24, 2008 at 11:13 AM

big willie dont it say that all in the paper that first said about malouda you big bullshiter

  • 31 d hamilton // Aug 24, 2008 at 11:18 AM

bring the best out of taylor!! the boy conceded a penalty yesterday, i don’t think bobby moore could get the best out of that lad. yeh he’s young and deserves a chance but look at micah richards and david weater there both around his age and far more acomplished, . we need another centre back!! along with atacking midfielder left back and forward!

  • 32 beyethegreat // Aug 24, 2008 at 11:20 AM

di maria is good but i dont think we need another winger we need someone in cm who can create personally i would go for pablo piatti he ticks all the boxes hes young skillful pacey and is also from argentina just look at his you tube

  • 33 toonarmy08 // Aug 24, 2008 at 11:21 AM

we won the game ugly against bolton which imo is good ,as they are a strong physical team that are hard to break down ,and last season we would have lost the game1-0,so its got to be positive!!looks like kk going to be busy this week getting his 2-3 players in ,not malouda though, dont rate him at all ,rather have the zog !!!

  • 34 nightfall // Aug 24, 2008 at 11:27 AM

obaistheman – we’ve been first linked to colo a year and a half ago

  • 35 Faustino // Aug 24, 2008 at 11:30 AM

We got beat 6-0 by Man U at Old Trafford last year. This year 1-1. Last year we drew a stalemate with Bolton. This year we won it.

Keep on like that we’ll be alright.

  • 36 BenjiToon // Aug 24, 2008 at 11:30 AM

Big Willie – are you ona wind up again? I think I saw all those on Total Football or Club Call or some such yeserday. Sorry mate if you’re being up front and honest but I’m not convinced we’ll sign 4 or 5 like. 2 or 3 maybe…

That said, there are pros and cons for all these players:

    1. Philipe Senderos – not good enough. Even the Arse faithfull are very critical of his regular mistakes. Why do we need him? He wont get in ahead of Colo, Taylor or Bassong or even Ca-crapa.

    2. Valencia is excellent and young, quick, tricky and good crosser. Would improve most sides BUT he’s another winger. Will he get to play in front of Jonas, Milner, Duff or Zog?

    3. Malouda – same as Valencia, except he is world class. Not really shown it at Chelski but coud be good for us. Would get ahead of Duff and Zog.

    4. Kadlec is good and young but inproven in a top league, while Jankulovski is 31. Both play in the same position and come from the same nation. (Although Jankulovski can play anywhere on left and is skillful.) Are we really after two players from same country to play same position? mmmm

We do need signings but not convinced these will be the ones.

  • 37 fip // Aug 24, 2008 at 11:31 AM

ohh btw saviola has stated that if real madrid dont want to keep him he would be happy to join newcastle

the quotes r in the sunday sun lol :D

but this would only happen if madrid could get milito as a replacement etc

also with robiniho of to chelski

  • 40 valle1 // Aug 24, 2008 at 11:35 AM

Well, we have had allot of rumours lately and most of them have been to good players like Lahm, Huntelaar, Xavi and now Malouda and Jankulovski, but whoever we sign… Known or unknown… I now have the utmost trust and respect for KK and the team responsible for bringing in players. They have signed 3 players, and not ONE of them have been anything but a great signing. So buy a few more lads, and get us into Europe for next season…

  • 41 LondonToon // Aug 24, 2008 at 11:36 AM

I hope that’s not true Big Willie:

    – I don’t think we need Malouda (especially for £12m)

    – Senderos isn’t up to it (even Wenger gets it wrong sometimes)

    – Valencia may be a decent bet but he’s more of a right-winger and we don’t really need that right now, plus Wigan would want silly money for him (£10m plus)

    – Don’t really know anything about Kadlec so can’t comment, but Jankolovski (if thought of as a LB not a LW) isn’t great defensively, OK he can take a free kick as we all saw on Wednesday, but he’s pushing 32 now so hardly fits in with the youth policy. However, saying that, I wouldn’t be surprised if we did sign an attacking left back cos that’s clearly the way Keegan wants to play, hence why N’Zogbia is starting at left back.

  • 42 A.L 9 // Aug 24, 2008 at 11:39 AM

Nick our squad is paper thin as it is, why would we sell 9 players, about half of which are first team regulars, to bring in 2 young argies that could may well flop, this would leave us in the position that Spurs are in, after flogging half there team to bing in a couple of hugely over-priced lightweigts.

  • 43 BigB75 // Aug 24, 2008 at 11:40 AM

DiMaria have a 30 mil euro buy out on his 4 year contract . still two years to go. the new manager at benfica already said he’s going no where..very good young player… My dad is a true die hard Benfica fun and we watch the matches all the time. the kid has great ball movement and always ready to attack… get him and Cardoza then we are talking ….just my two cents

  • 44 toonarmy08 // Aug 24, 2008 at 11:41 AM

kk keeps saying the players he has to bring in have got to be quality and the right players 4 nufc ,so we may be pleasently surprised by the 2-3 he brings in .what does everyone think of wilson palacios of wigan ?????,seen him a few times and he looks one hell of a talent .not sure of his age though ??

  • 45 no1toon fan // Aug 24, 2008 at 12:07 PM

big willie why dont you just stop feedin us all with absolute rubbish. kadlec for 1 has signed for bayer leverkusen. so much for all the signins 2 weeks ago eh your full of bull crap!!

  • 46 robertsa // Aug 24, 2008 at 12:18 PM

i still rekon we need 4 more players.

we need a cb to replace taylor.
a left back to replace n’zogbia.
a centre mid to replace butt.
a striker because we only have two good ones.

    id have.

    senderos, rat, sahin, zigic

but we will probs just get.

    warnock, inler derdiyok

  • 47 Luke // Aug 24, 2008 at 12:19 PM

I think Big Willie’s coments are funny — it’s the muppets out there who start getting excited and asking who is source is that are the num-nuts. By the way, did anyone else see we were linked with kaka?

  • 48 Spyro // Aug 24, 2008 at 12:20 PM

I genuinely believe LB will be Zoggy’s new position. KK has highlighted that he plays there for the u-21 french squad. He was decent there yesterday…but then again, Bolton dont really ever test the full backs do they? Against Arsenal Zoggy will get ripped, we need a new LB or Enrique to be in the team by then.

We are also desperate for a tall, back to goal striker to hold up the ball & get on the end of our crosses. Milner and Martins both had great opportunites from crosses but failed to convert.

Guthrie had a nervous, below average first half, but was better in the second.

Gutierrez was class…well as class as you can be when you constantly have two bolton players hounding you.

Duff was awful IMO yesterday, he didnt really contribute and he couldnt keep up with the play.

  • 53 wilo // Aug 24, 2008 at 1:11 PM

well all i can say is that after watching the match yesterday we do need lb,cm,cf and and a cd because i dont think taylor is good enough makes to many mastakes,so if we dont sign anyone before a week on monday we will strugle this season because we need cover and we have not got that at the minute, plus i think we should see duff, butt, smith, shola, viduka and injury pro michael owen all a waste of money in wages

  • 54 gorskino10 // Aug 24, 2008 at 1:18 PM

Both would be great signings, but Di Maria did state he would stay 1 MORE year, so with that attitude Benfica may sell as he has stated he will move on next summer. not seen the other guy but with an Argie Crew up here they would settle in great.

  • 55 Nick // Aug 24, 2008 at 1:19 PM

    Thanks Sirjasontoon.

AL9 -The 2 argies would be the tip of the iceberg.
Of course we would need more replacements as well, but the Argies mentioned are the sort of quality we should be aiming for.

My point is we are paying a hell of a lot of money to people who for some reaon or other hardly ever play or AREN’T GOOD ENOUGH: ie Viduka, Duff, Barton, Smith, Owen,

Danny sorry but like a few people, I wasn’t sure if my first email had sent properly on the other thread.

  • 56 Tom // Aug 24, 2008 at 1:42 PM

I’d be very happy if we signed Di Maria, he is an excellent player.

  • 57 Petey // Aug 24, 2008 at 1:59 PM

Brilliant post by Nick up their, pretty much summed up exactly how i feel…..getting 9m for milner wold be nice.

owen is pointless and not worth 21m….he did score a winner, but a cheaper striker maybe like huntelaar still has a better finish.

and as for taylor, thats the only part i disagree on, yer taylor does make lots of mistakes, and he has to stop thinking about using his hands as a last line of defense, but as he grows up he will/shud be one of our better players.

    great post nick

  • 58 Sav // Aug 24, 2008 at 2:19 PM

Nick – ‘Duff a waste of time on 70K a week and surprise surprise, injured again’.

And there was me thinking Duffer went in totally committed to the Toon cause for a 50/50 ball against Andy O’Brien and came off worst. Yeah, may as well flog injury-prone players like that – more trouble than they’re worth.

  • 59 Sav // Aug 24, 2008 at 2:21 PM

WE need a ACM, DCM, LB, CB and a target man striker. Don’t see those in this pair.

  • 60 Michael // Aug 24, 2008 at 2:45 PM

I heard that Buonanotte was going to some Italian club. Inter I think.
Besides I think he’d be too small for the prem, he’s basically a dwarf.
Di Maria is a winger and would probably cost quite a bit so I’d be surprised if it was true.
So what I’m trying to say is I don’t believe we are going to sign either of them.

  • 61 Tom // Aug 24, 2008 at 2:49 PM

Can’t Di Maria play behind the strikers, in an attacking midfield role? Or maybe he could play left wing and play Jonas in an attacking midfield??

  • 62 SwedeEric // Aug 24, 2008 at 3:31 PM

What is it about all the talk about players hight? Get it in the defence… But in middfield… ? I mean, Messi, Zog is as litle as Buonanotte and they are good enough for me…

Would love these two players, but gues they are to expensive!

  • 63 pedro // Aug 24, 2008 at 4:02 PM

If we buy Malouda i will leave my seat empty for the season. He is shit. we need a central midfielder. not a striker and not a winger. Stevie Taylor needs to settle himself down. lots of mistakes coming from him. But Malouda.. he is a joke

  • 64 None4Toon // Aug 24, 2008 at 4:06 PM

has mentioned Buonanotte here, he’s more the kind of creative ACM we r after but he’s too small at 5’3″ and reportedly Inter is after him as well? re Di Maria i guess we arent that short of strikers (Owen, Oba) and LW (Duff, Zog, Jonas). if we want more Argie imports i’d suggest Fabian Monzon – 21 aged good attacking LB of right physique, with vision and passing range, able to get past a player or two as well. just a different type of defender from Enrique. we really need to get a LB to free Zog.

  • 65 figsdad // Aug 24, 2008 at 5:13 PM

    Diego Buonanotte is class

  • 66 nick // Aug 24, 2008 at 6:47 PM

    Cheers Petey,

Ok I’ll backtrack on Taylor a bit, but after seeing Kompany for citeh today, I don’t know why we weren’t in for him. Colo and Kompany – 2 ball playing defenders would have been quality.

  • 67 nick // Aug 24, 2008 at 6:53 PM

    Michael & none4toon,

I despair when I hear people like you.

Some of the best ever players in the PL have been small. ZOLA , BEARDO, ROONEY and FABREGAS to name 4. Their lower centre of gravity makes them much easier to turn people.

We don’t just need 7 foot Allardyce type goons and apes.

  • 68 ToonRich // Aug 24, 2008 at 8:26 PM

I’m in agreement with Nick…I’m quite disappointed that we didnt approach Kompany, he would have been a very good addition to the team as a replacement for Faye. His presence and ability on the ball today was superb to say the least & he didnt even know his teammates names!

As for the height debate, I dont get why so many of you are hung up on getting a certain height of player…Deco isnt tall, yet he’s pulling the strings for chelski! MO scored yet another header yesterday to prove you dont need to be 6’+ to be a good striker.
I’m just looking forward to some more signings :)

dun get me wrong nick & toonrich … i do think often times shorter players tend to be more skilful, agile and creative, n i just luv them. however being 5’3″ and so young inexperienced in highly physical EPL, thousands of miles from home, is just a high risk for the player and the club which pays big bucks for his service. yes Beardo and Zola r legends but bigger (around 5’6″ at least), much older w/ tons of experience b4 shining in PL, Rooney n Fabregas r exceptional young talents but they stand over 5’10” tall n more muscular than the tiny Buonanotte, Pablo Piatti or Maxi Moralez!
