Taylor handled the ball on Saturday and just in case the referee didn’t see the first one, he handled again to block the shot, but in any case he gave away the crucial penalty on Saturday.
Steven Taylor- gave away penalty that Given brilliantly saved
But it took our goalkeeper to do what he’s done for Newcastle over the last 11 years, and that’s be a top class and consistent goalkeeper for the club, and a world class save saved Taylor’s blushes.
“I don’t know who writes the scripts for Michael, but it was unbelievable.”
“He came on, and got the header. He’s just a goal machine.” “I’m delighted as the lads really deserved it.”
“They played 4-5-1, and it was difficult at times.” “They were very hard to break down, but we ended up playing some great stuff, and I know the fans will have gone home happy with the result.”
But Taylor will need to improve his concentration, and he can certainly learn from the experienced Fabricio, who is looking like a great signing the more we see of him.
Taylor added:
“I thought defensively we did OK through the game.”
“Fabricio watches my back, and I watch his. Basically, we just try to keep it tight. Defensively, the club has always got a lot of stick over the years.”
“But we’re getting a good little partnership going, and long may that continue.”
Kevin Keegan is hoping that he has made an excellent central partnership with Collocini and Taylor, but we think Taylor will still need to improve to ensure that he’s the man that plays alongside Colccini in the coming years.
Steven continued:
“It’s nice for the gaffer to say that, but it’s up to us as players to perform, and get people talking.”
We may even have a decent defense this year - and it’s a long time since we’ve been able to say that.
Comments welcome.
“The clean sheet was one of the pluses.” “We dealt with the long ball well. Kevin Davies is a handful, but we did well all the way through the side.”
Taylor would like to form a good pairing with Argentine defender Fabricio Coloccini, who again showed oozing class as he seemed to stroll through the game.

woot…. wall cherry
I was at the match and said to my mate… how long will it be before we see Taylor do his getting shot impression again… we didnt have to wait that long!!! I hope he learns a bit off curly.

taylor is garbage simple as that.
3 ed_speed // Aug 25, 2008 at 19:17
i disagree dave.

4 Tom // Aug 25, 2008 at 19:19
Garbage may be a bit strong Dave, but he does have some flaws as a defender which he needs to work on!
5 Gallowgate31 // Aug 25, 2008 at 19:20
You can’t fault his passion or commitment though, give him more time with curly and he should do ok.
6 AngerOfTheNorth // Aug 25, 2008 at 19:21
You didn’t go to the game then Dave?
Taylor had a decent game - nothing spectactular, but good enough. Yes he has to improve, but every 21/22 year old in the game does too. He only really made one slip up in the game and managed to battle enough to stop the nearby striker snatching the ball and going one-on-one with Given.
As for the handball, the ball was blasted at him, these things happen… Thing is he throws himself in front of so many shots it’ll happen from time to time. I’d rather that than he was stood watching the strikers ping it into the top right hand corner…

I think he is pony as well
8 beyethegreat // Aug 25, 2008 at 19:21
he has potential to be a world class cb yes he does make mistakes but i feel they are getting less frequent even though he did make two in less than 10 secs

all young players make mistakes , just not all of them are in a position where mistakes get noticed so much and do so much damage .
im all for youngsters in the team ,b ut think they should always be used as sub untill they have learned their trade .
ill let my apprentice swing a door anytime he wants to , but will i hell let him touch the hardwood .

I think you are really unfair on your opinion of Taylor. I think he makes silly mistakes at times but he is still learning. The last few seasons he has been the main defender at a very young age having to make up for Boumsong and other sh1te defenders that have played along side him. Coloccini will bring the best out of Taylor and he will only get better. Taylor does get alot of unfair stick not on here as much but alot on other sites.
13 whitey // Aug 25, 2008 at 19:26
first home game of the season, started with a win and already people are starting to have a go. yes he made a couple of errors, he gave the ball away, but so did every player once during the game. guthrie lost possession at least three times in the opening 15 mins. but as a unit, we were pretty solid on saturday and we didnt concede, thats important for team confidence. i thought we kept the ball really well for long periods.
dave, what are you on about that taylor is garbage?
14 Ginkoh // Aug 25, 2008 at 19:27
Fine game. Mention that we went on physical game with Bolton. But it’s easy to be different score in other days. Hopefully we can improve our defensive, We’re still not the best form yet.

has any one 1 noticed how we keep signing youngsters in similar positions
spear-striker
ranger-striker
zamblera-striker
baheng-striker
tozer- centre back or left back
kadar-centre back or left back
there is only sodeberg who is a keeper and we have forster krul harper and given in front of him
20 Matt // Aug 25, 2008 at 19:36
Taylor needs to calm down a little bit and then he’ll be alright. Just needs some maturity which will come in time and he will stop the silly mistakes. If he can’t stop them we’ve always got Bassong as backup now who looked solid in pre season.
21 ed_speed // Aug 25, 2008 at 19:39

24 Chris F // Aug 25, 2008 at 19:40
can no-one remember how guff rio ferdinand was whn he was a similar age to Taylor, and look how he’s turned out as he’s got older.
sure he may be thick as mince, but if tayls can work on his game and become a bit more level headed as he gets older, he has every chance of being a top quality centre half.
25 beyethegreat // Aug 25, 2008 at 19:41
and apparentley we have 4 more youngsters on trial who also play either either or both cb or lb
26 Matt // Aug 25, 2008 at 19:41
Oh and Beye, that’s standard youth policy, it makes sense. You can’t just have a team of youngsters with one in each position because not all of those will live up to their potential and not all of them will want to stay at the club.

If taylor took a quick look after his 1st hand-ball, he woulda noticed that Shay had it covered!..Yes, he’s immature…& should/better learn…But the arguement that he used to play with crap partners isn’t a good one…As taylor was the only constant…therefore it COULD have been him making them look bad, just a thought/observation, not a critisism!..

ED Speed, I dont get too bothered by your comments like some others do, but I can see how you annoy people, could you maturely answer this question please without been offended.
Why do you feel the need to curtiosly bow out after your comments and write your username in brackets after refering to yourself?
Is it one of the following reasons?
1. You know it annoys people and therefore continue to do so in an attempt to irritate them further (very childish)
2. You have previosly worked in a job that required you to write a lot of letters, and havn’t yet shifted out of the mould (understandable)
3. You believe it looks hip and/or cool (what?)
4. You feel it is neccecary due to a very strict and religous upbringing (understandble, but slightly wierd)
5. Another reason that has not been stated, if so please clarify.
Cheers
63 Shot Bru! // Aug 25, 2008 at 20:30
I think when Colloccini learns english, he will be able to mentor Taylor a lot better and hopefully the mistakes will become a rarity. However you can only live off the reputation of being a talented kid for so long before you have to deliver, it will be a big season for taylor, lets hope he becomes a legend.

IMO he will come good. But like all humans, he will always make mistakes. I just hope he learns from them and they dont cost us any more penalties.
(Cheers, Lew.)

77 Budgie // Aug 25, 2008 at 21:42
Pleased to see the site up and working again, hopefully all of the bugs have been ironed out. The site has become so popular (understandably) its outgrown the server.
I take onboard everything that has been said about Taylor, in my opinion;
1) He has to be encouraged because of his commitment to the club, I honestly believe he is black and white through and through.
2) Our squad is so small, Keegan cannot change everything in this summer break, he’s working on the “weaker links” first. I think we should give Taylor this season at least to see how he comes on with Coloccini (and hopefully learn along with Bassong)
3) I hope with an accomplished centre back in Coloccini, and Beye plus a REAL left back bought before the window closes (let N’Zogbia play in midfield) means they can form an understanding so that Taylor does not need to do as many “last gasp” challanges inside the box.
4) With the good work being done by players like Guttierez and Guthrie etc the defence will be more protected, at least against the lower teams, making Taylor look more accomplished and settled.
He may not be the final answer but I feel for now we should give him more time……….3 or 4 more signings of the quality we have just got and I’ll be more than happy!
78 Spyro // Aug 25, 2008 at 22:44
Taylor played ok, but where is all this “he can be world class” coming from? What has he done for people to state such things? Its ridiculous. It is like saying, “Dawson has the potential to be world class”, you can say that about ANY young defender as it is commonly excepted that young defenders make mistakes.
79 buddy // Aug 25, 2008 at 22:52

seriously we are very harsh fans at times. HOW MANY young ‘mistake prone’ defenders have turned into quality players give time. taylor is very young. whatever happened to newcastle fans lovin a player who gives his all, wich taylor does evry time as wel as d fatc he WILL be a good player, im sure of it. i may not be correct but at least give him a chance
this critical attitude has contibuted to many players havin bad careers at d toon.

buddy(1st and last time i will do that, hahahahaha) sorry
80 reillers // Aug 25, 2008 at 23:55
When it comes to our defence, wanting it to be “world class” is a bit far. At best, and I mean at best our defence over the last God knows how long has been average, usually it’s dire, awful, one of the worst in the Premiership. I think we should give wee Taylor a chance, he has potential and he’s better then anyone else we have as well. Solid, we need a solid defence. Taylor can and maybe will be part of it, but we should definitely give him a lash at it. Like I said, better then most of the lads we have.
As for Given, I’m absolutely delighted for the wee lad. He seems, *touch wood* back to his best, something he’s worked really hard for and the best thing about it is that he hasn’t even reached his peak, keeper terms he’s still pretty young and has hopefully a long while yet to play and improve.
81 bear pit // Aug 26, 2008 at 1:06
How long will it take Taylor to stop these stupid errors, he’s hardly missed a game for years. I dont rate him but I’ve now accepted he’s staying at the club and will probably be the first name on the team sheet no matter how he plays and what he costs us. There seems to be a split of those who think he’s great and those who think he’s either average or poor. If any of the young kids, Edgar in particular, had did what he did on Saturday they would have been slaughtered
