Newcastle’s Oba Martins has been ruled out of tomorrow’s Carling Cup tie at Coventry – although the news may be a little better on Irishman Damien Duff.
Oba Martins - groin strain will keep him out 2-3 weeks
It looks like Martins’ groin strain could keep him out for a couple of weeks, so it’s not as bad as it could have been, as Martins was injured trying to take a chance in the 53rd minute on Saturday.
Damien Duff got a bad hit on his knee from his Irish team-mate, Alan O’Brien, the former Newcastle center-back, but it may not be as serious as first thought.
We may be a little short on strikers for tomorrow’s Carling Cup tie at Coventry, but Kevin Keegan told the Evening Chronicle today:
“Oba’s struggling. He tried to play on in the second half against Bolton but all we would have done if we had left him on is damage it further.”
“He’s a brave lad. He wanted to go and give it a try, even though, I think, the physios knew he couldn’t play on with it and he has got no chance for Coventry.”
“We had Michael Owen, who I had promised I would only use for 10 minutes, on the bench. But when you’ve got a problem, and you see Michael there, suddenly the problem doesn’t look as bad.”
“Damien Duff got a knock. He was very brave to go in there, or stupid, whichever way you want to put it.” “I wouldn’t have gone in for that!”
“He’s a quick healer, and I know he’ll want to play. He’s very fit and energetic at the moment, so he’ll have a slight chance.” “And we will have to think long and hard what we do about Michael.”
However, we’d be very surprised if Duff makes it tomorrow night, so not sure who our two up front may be – probably Ameobi and Owen, unless Kevin wants to give young 17 year-old Ryan Donaldson a run out. Ryan looked quite impressive in the couple of times he’s come on in pre-season.
Steve Harper will be in goal, and we‘ll have to wait and see what team Kevin will play tomorrow night, which is a game we would like to win, but must not lose.
Comments welcome.

dont play owen. play jose at LB, stick zogs on the left, and play jonas and duff up front. might aswell give spiderman his first proper chance to get on the scoresheet for us.
maybe play jonas a little deeper, so he can pick the ball up and run at coventry. to be blunt, they’ll sh!te themselves.

@Dan13, I wouldn’t agree about that these are not good players. In fact, we are talking about playing Coventry City and we need to have the tryouts for our future players.

yes, that’s very true. I want to see Kadar and Tozer and LuaLua to be featuring, from the bench to be more realistic.
Otherwise, it will not make sense that we keep buying young players!!!!

spyro-if i was gonna have any youngsters on the bench, it would be lua lua and donaldson. i’d also give bassong a game.
i dont wanna put out some sort of second string team though, because in all honesty cups are the only thing we can have a solid run in, and i’d be devestated to go out the cup at the first hurdle. getting arsenal early on was bad enough last year.

i agree patrick, i think he should play 45mins. However, this is a strong Coventry side that could beat our best 11 on their day so i dont want to leave too many class players out. If they look at a teamsheet without Jonas, Owen, Coloccini, Given they are going to be well up for it, and we may just end up getting thrashed.

Berba’s mum Margarita, 45, a former champion handball player, recalls how the Shearer shirt became her boy’s prized possession.
She said: “Dimitar wore this shirt all the time.
“He even used to sleep in his Newcastle shirt! It’s that special to him.
“Dimitar told me it was his dream to play for Newcastle United one day and wear the same shirt as Alan Shearer, who is my son’s hero.
just read that about berbatov, wouldnt it be awesome if we could sign him

why would we play a weakened team? ffs we havnt won a domestic trophy in 50 odd years. any piece of silverware has got to be chased to the full.
i agree maybe play harps but apart from him got to play strongest team possible. for me:
harper
beye coloccini taylor/bassong enrique
milner butt guthrie gutierrez
owen duff/nzogbia/zamblera/donaldson
46 Dan13 // Aug 25, 2008 at 23:31

Zamblera isn’t the greatest, he has only scored for the reserve team in pens as i recall, apologies if wrong.
but he certainly aint ready
47 ScottyT // Aug 25, 2008 at 23:36
well tbh id rather give him a chance than play smith or shola. only think donaldson or a youngster should be given a start if zog/duff/jonas or milner cant play up wit owen.
actually wud giv geremi a game 4gt bwt him. youngsters on bench yes but we cant play a weakened team.

Ross - Crosas is actually quite good, shame he’s at Celtic though. Good player, sh*te club.
I would be happy with Iago, my only complaint would be that I don’t think he’s old enough to go straight into the first team, he’d have to be eased in I think.

74 Tom_Toon // Aug 26, 2008 at 1:41
Danquah warrants a place over Zamblera and Ranger.
Zamblera has barely had any minutes in the reserves and only scored for the u18.
Ranger has just joined and only scored for u18.
Danuah has been in the reserves fo 2 years, just been awarded a pro contract and scored a fair bit in the reserves.
We saw Donaldson pre-season its now time to look at Danquah.
75 Dan4Toon // Aug 26, 2008 at 1:46

The team tomorrow should be:
…………………..Harper…………………..
Edgar…..Coloccini….Bassong…Enrique
Jonas…….Geremi…….Guthrie…Zoggy
……………….Ameobi……Smith……………
I know we don’t like Smith, but if we are going to keep him, we might as well try to get him going. As for playing Edgar, Bassong, Enrique, these kids need games.
Butt is getting on a bit and needs to be rested when possible.
The Argentinean lads need games and to get used to England, so keep them in there. Bring on Owen at half-time or with half an hour left so he can get some minutes without too much pressure.
83 Danish_Magpie // Aug 26, 2008 at 4:50
We should move for Stephen Appiah. He is a available on a free since he terminated his contract with Fenerbache. He is angling for a move to Juve, but let’s make him an offer. He is a quality player and would add something else to our CM. Physically very strong, good tackler, good distribution, great experience from Juve, Champions League etc. Sign him up!
We should have moved for Lars Jacobsen as well, as cover for Beye. He was free, is an international defender and is a decent player (have watched him lots).
84 obamagic // Aug 26, 2008 at 5:17

86 ELFER // Aug 26, 2008 at 7:57
Well personally I would play AMEOBI (hope he scores and can with that complete his move to ipswich!) and Smith up front.
Don’t risk Owen!! Instead give our young lads some time to run out.

But surely playing Shola and Smith’d carling cup-tie them and wouldn’t that affect their value?
Ha! Goddit - is KK implicitly saying that to those who hold the purse strings?

Fabio needs an outing he may be brilliant when it comes to the first team and no-one knows it!
We have seen Carroll and Pattinson who had everything going for them look poor, Fabio may be brilliant when it comes to the first team, give him 15 minutes then replace with Smith unless he scores, these are the times when he should be given a chance, he should have been in the friendlies already, Wesley Baheng could have been tried too.
91 Ian // Aug 26, 2008 at 9:13
Nzogbia must be in midfield not at the back.
92 neeraj // Aug 26, 2008 at 9:50
smith against coventru
given
edgar tayls bassong enrique
lua lua guthrie butt zog
smith owen/caroll
cant go upfront with two strikers searching for their forms……..
keep smith up front, can be used in mid
and we all know we need him to get his form back , not only for himself but for kk

51times-living in edinburgh i’ve plenty of mates who are hearts fans too, but they’re not liked in the spl for some reason, alot of people i know group them with rangers who they also hate?
i dont really understand to be honest, i just keep an eye on rangers for him, because he keeps up with us for me,haha
94 Tom // Aug 26, 2008 at 10:17
For me:
Given
Beye, Bassong, Taylor, Enrique
Milner, Guthrie, N’Zogbia, Jonas
Ameobi, Donaldson
Subs: Harper, Colo, Geremi, Duff, Owen
For anyone who watches the reserves or U-18s, what about playing Jonny Godsmark? He is meant to be very very quick isn’t he? I’d like to see any of Zamblera/Donaldson/Godsmark/ Danquah get a run out tbh, not Nile Ranger though, the guy just signed!
What do people who watched the U-18s at the weekend think of him and Spear?
95 Tom // Aug 26, 2008 at 10:18
Also, Baheng is injured Ian, unfortunately
96 GEORDIE69 // Aug 26, 2008 at 10:46
Tom Toon Danquah is a right sided midfielder not a centre forward!
97 Tom_Toon // Aug 26, 2008 at 10:47
He plays upfront a lot.
