HT: Coventry City 1 Newcastle 2 – Magpies On Top

After 20 minutes of a game that was very even, Newcastle started to exert their class, and for the rest of the half were the better side, and were starting to tear Coventry apart with excellent goals by N’Zogbia and Milner.

But then right on the stroke of half time, Coventry scored out of nowhere to get right back into it.

The first 15 minutes was even with Coventry matching Newcastle for work rate, but then a beautiful move by Newcastle opened up the Coventry defense completely and Milner was on his own out on the left and put in good cross with his left foot for N’Zogbia to tap home.

A simple but well executed goal after 21 minutes by Newcastle.

After the goal Newcastle started to stroke the ball around beautifully and it was all Newcastle after 30 minutes and several chances were missed with both Milner and N’Zogbia prominent. Owen was seen warming up – no doubt Kevin thinking Michael could have already scored a few.

At the back both Enrique and Bassong were giving accomplished performances and it was little surprise when Newcastle went further ahead after 38 minutes when a left wing cross from Milner found the back of the net, with Geremi worrying the goalkeeper.

But after Newcastle were looking to increase their lead even further, before half time, Clinton Morrison had the ball in the net with a beautiful shot, from just outside the area to put Coventry right back in this game.

Newcastle missed a few chances and it could well be that we’ll see Michael Owen in the second half, who can put some of the chances Newcastle missed in the first half into that net.

Overall, it was an excellent first half display from Newcastle, but the lads should be more than one goal up given their performance in the first 45 minutes.

Coventry are right back in this game and an all out final 45 minutes is still necessary from Newcastle if they are going to get the win tonight.

We can take nothing for granted and Coventry are giving it all they have.

Is it just me or does colocini’s placement/following wrong player cause a lot of the goal chances against us?

Enrique just lacking match fitness hence his mistakes, not doubt KK will take that into effect for Saturday and drop him,

Defo need to win tonight. No draws please. The last thing we need is superfluous games this season. We haven’t the squad (yet) for that.

Tripp – 2nd round ties do not get replayed, it’s extra time and pens.

Yeah I agree tripp…it’ll be a poor 2nd half if we draw it though – Keegan does have a couple of options on the bench though (Owen etc.) so that shouldn’t happen

Alexw, don’t get me wrong, i think and hope he is going to be class for us but just from watching the games and highlights, some of chances/goals against us he’s followed the wrong man wide -maybe assuming other player was covering?

He does break up a lot of play and positioning seems ace so should be a great buy but just an observation.

Martin, yeah agree it shouldn’t happen. KK is wise to handle the likes of Owen with kid gloves tonight. The Prem is our priority. CC is nice to be in, would be great to win, but with a thin squad it’s a liability.

Amazes me how much these commentator want this to be a draw, there’s just something in the intonation in their voices, they just want to see NUFC fail to go through and would love Cov boys to beat us – anyone else?

Milner perfectly entitled to take a shot there after a quite superb run through Coventry’s defence

ooooh…could go to penalties – last time we won penalties was in europe (I think…may be wrong) – nobby solano scored the winning one…could extend the winning run to 2…

Lovely dribbling by Milner there, should have squared it though!

steve48, everybody loves an underdog. I wouldn’t read too much into it. From a neutral’s perspective a tight, anxious game is probably more fun to watch than a 5-1 seal clubbing. I’ll take the seal clubbing, but I’m a fan, not a pundit.

Hmmm, I’m not so sure Steve – no one can be angry at him, but theres only 1 goal in it and the win is more important than a great goal (which it would have been had it gone in)

Tripp – that’s not fair at all…Granted I’m as jealous as the next man that he’s nailing Heidi Klum and some of his stuff in the early 90’s was attrocious but that’s no reason to smash the poor guy’s puddings in!

What a bit of chest control from Coloccini – disapointed to see Gutierrez dive for the 3rd game in a row…

    1. Carling Cup is a knockout comp, there are no extra games, so we shouldnt worry
    2. Our last penalty shootout win was last season i think, with zoggy scoring the final penalty if i remember correctly 😀
