KEVIN Keegan makes three changes from the side which beat Bolton Wanderers 1-0 at St.James’ Park on Saturday.
Jose Enrique and Sebastien Bassong both make their season debuts, with Seb making his official debut tonight, and Geremi as expected remains in the team as a starter.
Making way from Saturday are center-back Steven Taylor, who is on the subs bench, and injured strikers Oba Martins (groin) and Damien Duff (knee) are missing, again as expected.
But rather surprisingly perrenial Given under-study and local lad, Steven Harper, is not given a run out in goal.
Charles N’Zogbia moves into midfield with Jonas Gutierrez likely to partner James Milner in the attack.
Michael Owen, the match-winner against Bolton, is surprisingly named among the substitutes as he continues his return to full fitness following a niggling calf problem.
Teenage forwards Ryan Donaldson and Nile Ranger, who signed from Southampton this summer, are also included among the Newcastle subs.
Alan Smith is not names even on the subs bench, so we’re not too sure if he’s injured or on his way out of the club and will not be risked.
We’ll have a profile on Nile Ranger tomorrow, now that the club has formally said they have in fact signed the youngster.
TEAMS
Coventry City: tbc
Newcastle United: Shay Given, Habib Beye, Jose Enrique, Fabricio Coloccini, Sebastien Bassong, Nicky Butt, Danny Guthrie, Geremi, Charles N’Zogbia, James Milner, Jonas Gutierrez
Subs: Michael Owen, Steve Harper, Steven Taylor, David Edgar, Ryan Donaldson, Nile Ranger
Referee: A Bates
Attendance: tbc

Just shows the strength of depth and perhaps it is KK way of showing this b4 the MA meeting tomorrow.
Cov wont be a pushover - especially at home- but I di think we will proceed into the next round.

interesting starting 11. 6 midfielders and 4 defenders…surprised harper didnt get a start.
3 AlexW // Aug 26, 2008 at 19:20
we arnt even starting a striker what is all that about, why would KK demand alan smith is kept then not even place him on the bench in a game where we dont have a starting striker
4 robertsa // Aug 26, 2008 at 19:20
my bet is that at half time it will be 3-0
at full time 5-1.
5 Tom // Aug 26, 2008 at 19:20
Only 6 subs, no midfielders? Kazenga Lua Lua injured? Maybe some other youngster should have been given a place on the bench to let them experience travelling to a competitive game with the first team?

Aaaaaaahhhhhh…….
We need a striker!
Hopefully Kev will give some insight on Smiths absence.
11 Chris H // Aug 26, 2008 at 19:26
We played well against Valencia without a striker up front.
Keegan will probably play 433 with Zog, Milner and Jonas upfront.
3-1 to the Toon. Howay the lads!

14 GM // Aug 26, 2008 at 19:28
I Think Jonas will do a job up there, I said on a previous post that he should have played there on saturday behind oba and owen when he came on, he is much more of a threat than duff with his running on & off the ball as well as his pace, maybe he is the AMC we need (if MA doesnt plan on buying anyone else )and keep Zog on the left?
15 Davy C // Aug 26, 2008 at 19:28
The size of our squad is a real worry. If we get anymore injuries we’ll be in trouble.
16 Ant // Aug 26, 2008 at 19:28
Zog up front for my money.
Maybe alone in some sort of 6 man diamond with Jonas and Guttierrez on the wings, Butt at DM and Guthrie and Geremi in CM.
Colo and Bassong is the partnership I’ve been waiting for.
If the lads playing are on their game I can see a right hammering of them.
Looking forward to it…Haway the lads.

there is only one player who hasnt played well this game so far, and thats geremi, losing the ball too many times, great passing play but lets go into the second half with the same enthusiasm and get a few more goals and bring some high confidence for the trip to arsenal, milner has been immense, so have the back four (apart from the goal) also jonas has been dangerous, bring geremi off bring on owen/donaldson
140 Tom // Aug 26, 2008 at 20:39
I don’t think it becomes all doom and gloom again! Beye was unlucky stretching for that long ball, and Coventry got a lucky deflection which brought it back to Morrison. It was a cracking strike from him mind!
141 Michael // Aug 26, 2008 at 20:40
I was about to say it’s the first time in a while I’ve enjoyed watching us play and felt relaxed. Then a very rare mistake from Beye and a superb finish means we could be in for a nervy second half.
142 The Entertainers // Aug 26, 2008 at 20:40
That was a very good half (there goal aside)
Much better than i thought, expected more of Cov!
Bassong was unfortunate for there goal and other than that he has looked in easy street.
Really impressed with our 6-man midfield and the energy they are putting in.
Milner and Zog look like they could get a few more goals and Jonas seeps quality evrytime he gets the ball.
Ho’way the lads, keep it up and lets hope for a few more goals from the lads in ‘purple’!

Enrique has to start at Arsenal - he has been very good. He’s made his point to KK. If he had more experience then I think Bassong would start also. He’s a really good prospect. Our signings have been excellent. More of the same please.
145 TB // Aug 26, 2008 at 20:41
Milner, Colo, Spidey, and the Bull have been top notch.
Geremi…. not so much.
Beye was a little sloppy on Coventry’s goal, but it was a bit unlucky how the ball dropped to morrisons feet.

Let’s be honest, last season we NEVER passed the ball as well as that…We constantly look dangerous and we have no strikers on the pitch - plus, whenever we lose the ball!
Their goal was an imense finish, with poor defending and a little bit of look that the ball landed to Morisson…But this the 1st time these 4 have played together aswell!
I’m happy, and i’ll stay happy as long as we play the 2nd half as well as the 1st!

Bassong is too slow, and reminds me of Bramble at times with his reactions. Other than that he’s been alright.
Milner and Zoggy by far our best players, running around everywhere and made the two goals happen.
Butt and Guthrie is an amazing midfield pair, but I wonder how many matches Butty can handle. That would be the area I’d improve as well as LB.
As for Gutierrez, he tries to do too much sometimes. Still such a hard worker though, just what we need.

161 Mikee // Aug 26, 2008 at 20:48
Is it just me or does colocini’s placement/following wrong player cause a lot of the chances against us?
162 Spyro // Aug 26, 2008 at 20:48
Oba what are you on about, Bassong is NOT slow, what game have you been watching. He is quick
163 Kevin // Aug 26, 2008 at 20:48

164 Steve_48 // Aug 26, 2008 at 20:48
myrtle ?
165 Chris H // Aug 26, 2008 at 20:48
Got to say, Enrique is solid tonight. Hope he keeps it up second half to warrant a start at Arsenal.
166 valle // Aug 26, 2008 at 20:49
True, Enrique has impressed me, but he needs to be consistant and perform like this against the best… But yah… Give him the chance against Arsenal… When Owen, Oba and Dukes get back we are scary… Still need a few more to hit the top 5-6 but we can get 7-8 with the guys we got if we are lucky with injuries i reckon.
167 Spyro // Aug 26, 2008 at 20:49

Milner had no right to get through that gap!!
198 Spyro // Aug 26, 2008 at 21:08
Coloccini has been class, long range passing has been superb on at least 3 occassions
199 TB // Aug 26, 2008 at 21:11
in my opinion everyone is playing good except for Geremi and Guthrie.
Geremi is having a shocker.
Guthrie hasn’t been terrible, but definitely some poor decisions.
200 ADtoonAM // Aug 26, 2008 at 21:13

228 ALEX, the Israeli toon // Aug 26, 2008 at 22:02
No we all understand why Enrique should not play, too many mistakes. He is okay coming forward but awful defending, weakest link…
And Geremi out some midfield spark in!
229 valle // Aug 26, 2008 at 22:04
Just as you think Newcastle will finally have a solid defense…

236 bear pit // Aug 26, 2008 at 22:36
Bassong had a massive game tonite and Colo is a class act. Its the CB pairing I’d like to see but doubt he’ll drop Taylor. Shame though, I didnt miss his errors one bit !! Geremi had a shocker.
