Newcastle Pursue Three Midfielders

A Newcastle United target in the summer was presumably Rennes midfielder Stephane Mbia, who plays for Cameroon, with our own midfielder Geremi.

Stephane Mbia – Cameroon midfielder intersting Newcastle?

Rennes have already bid £6M from Everton for the 22-year-old defensive midfielder, and the French club they are holding out for more, and the Chronicle is reporting that Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is also looking at the 11-times capped midfielder.

Whether we can attract Mbia to the club remains to be seen, although it will be an advantage that Geremi is already here on Tyneside.

Newcastle have also apparently talked to Udinese about their holding midfielder, Gokhan Inler, who we have been linked with ever since June.

So it seems that midfielders Mbia and Inler, who obviously are still available, are two possible acquisitions before next Monday and of course we believe we are in for 21 year old Norwegian central attacking midfielder Rosenberg’s Per Ciljan Skjelbred.

It could be that we could capture two of those before the window closes, but what about FC Basel center-forward Eren Derdiyok?  We’d love to get this youngster on Tyneside.

So more players we are linked with today, and of course after tonight’s 2nd round Carling Cup tie there is an important meeting between Keegan, Wise and owner Mike Ashley, out of which may come some real action, once they decide who they will really go after in the last few days of the summer market.

Dont think Inler will want to come.
Dont particularly want someone like M’Bia, as a player type and person, complete mercenary.

    Skjelbred it is!

Inler said at the weekend he is staying in Italy this season no matter what. So that deal is dead.

hey tom, but i think skjelbred won’t happen because i think it’s just press talk. another club just bid for him so the press just throws our name back in because of our initial “interest” in him.

what’s more, rosenborg said they’ve received nothing from us i heard?

How are we presumably interested in M’bia?

It’s all speculation and I wouldn’t be surprised if we signed none of the players mentioned.

Derdiyok was very close to a deal with a german team (unfortunately…), but they decided to wait one year (YES!). Maybe that’s our chance to snap him up, becouse next year (if he has a good season) there will be a lot of clubs after him…

Tom, what makes you say that? Wenger and Moyes have been pretty good character judges in the past what makes you label this guy a mercenary?

I wouldn’t count yer chickens just yet guys, I doubt very much that we’ll get anyone else in before the deadline, as you know it always take forever for us to sign anyone & 6 days isn’t long enough for us, no way!!!!

Cyprus-Toon – “It always takes forever for us to sign anyone”

How do you work that out? Because Coloccini had some problems moving and the deal was revealed early by his agent?
Guthrie was in immediately, and we can do that with anyone. When we’re running out of time we can probably do things quicker than we can if we’re in no rush

Why are we suddenly linked with a load of defensive midfielders? We need an attacking/creative midfielder. If the Norweigan lad is the only choice in that category then I’ll have please.

I don`t think Per Ciljan Skjelbred is strong enough. He playes for the rivals of my favoritt team her in Norway. He is good with the ball, but I think he wont have to mutch to give agains big strong Premier League defenders.

As a minimum we need a creative midfielder – MOUTINHO, a striker – DERDIYOK, a fullback – BURDISSO and perhaps the Argentine players noted in hte Olympics. Without them it is going to be a v long season – look at the injury list already after 2 games.

Skjelbred’s agent or maybe the even the player himself were clearly trying to manipulate the transfer when it first emerged we were “interested” yet Rosenberg had heard absolutely nothing from Newcastle.

We don’t desperately need to bring in another holding midfielder just yet, Butt’s got enough left in him for another season providing Keegan reminds him that he has, fundamentally, zero use going forward. Guthrie is clearly a very good signing; I haven’t seen a player with such willingness to get on the ball and retain posession since Dyer was at his peak at the club. However I don’t think he has the stamina or the ability to serve as our sole creative attacking force in midfield, he’s more of a 3rd man in midfield sort of player.

If it were up to me, I’d look at completely revamping the strike force, not a fan of Martins or Owen. The rest of the team is good enough, just not quite strong enough in depth in certain areas.

I’d be very happy with M’bia sitting in our midfield instead of Butt, who is getting on a bit! I think Skjelbred may be recycling an old story, especially as he just signed a new contract! Would like to sign both though 🙂

I like being surprised. It’s much better than hearing some of the rumours about who might be coming in, only to be disappointed when they sign for somebody else. Mind you to be honest in most cases I’ve never heard of the players we are looking to bring in. I trust Kevin Keegan completely. If he says someone is good and he needs him in the squad that’s all I need to hear. Keep the negotiations’ secret and only tell us when the players have signed. The signings completed so far look very good indeed. A few more like them would be perfect. Mind you I hope we can sought out Michael Owen’s Contract at the meeting tomorrow.

the season is 2 games old and already we are in an injury crisis situation, we need 3-4 good squad players LB, MF, striker just to see us up till xmas, these big so called WOW signings are just pie in the sky, to try to sell a few more season tickets, nobody is falling for that one again

Dick – I’m not sure that is how this club regime works. Ashley did NOT say anything about a WOW signing himself. Its come from other ‘sources’ which aren’t proven. So far we’ve signed good players, not star players. Think that might continue. The season ticket shortfall is another issue…

But are you saying you wouldn’t take a proven star if they wanted to come?

There was talk of a WOW signing but second hand from the son of someone who went to the Ashley meeting corporate box (non)holders. Could be complete speculation but it was on a fairly reliable toon site; the same site that said we had modric tied up then he went to spurs, aimer’s missus didn’t fancy the NE etc. I can’t see it happening, but neither am I too bothered. More signings in the same vein will make me very happy and to be honest I consider Colo in the WOW category. Top player.

It’s amazing what the press make up. I read earlier that it was ‘telling that we hadn’t revealed how much we’d paid for our signings’. Well, there’s a good reason for that: we don’t have to any more!

Has any one else noticed how we keep being quoted as having only signed 3 players and the press seem to forget about Bassong? Compare that to Everton’s plight and we’re not doing too badly. I can see them struggling this year, especially after Moyes’ negativity.

Can’t wait for the door to shut and players to be in. I think it will be a case of opening up newsnow one morning and finding a pleasant surprise.

Fingers crossed Mickey re-signs and one or two new boys come in. We are STILL a club in transition. Don’t expect miracles over night.

Can you believe 2 games in and we’re having injury problems !

    martins
    viduka
    kadar
    cacapa
    duff
    lua lua
    barton

    Not fully fit:

    Shola
    Smith
    Owen

    Thats almost a team!

Where as most clubs could get away with a 23-25 man squad, that surely has to be the least here at the Toon, with our injury luck!

Its clear we need a LB and a striker. However we lacked that edge for most of Boltons game, so it would suggest we need a creative midfielder and i worry about Butt, as he is prone to the odd injury and suspension, as well as a drop in form from game to game (still one of our most consistant performers though). So does that mean another defensive midfielder too?

I would love another 4 players in (as would kev)

Prehaps with the injuries and the potential we showed at Old Trafford it will spur the club into transfer action.

I’m also a little concerned about this meeting on Wednesday.

Ok so i dont know what its about and it may well be just about contracts of current players.

But if its about transfers, why so late? That would leave 5 days to conclude our transfer business! There appears to be alot of movement from other clubs today, but we will hold our own because firstly we have a match and then this bloody meeting!

While i’m happy with our purchases and Ashleys / Keegans approach to bring in the ‘right’ players, i suppose i’d hoped for our work to be done by now.

A journalist on the radio today said the transfer window should shut two weeks after the season ends. Why?

So fans and players know where they are. Fans can buy a shirt with players names on or renew their season ticket in good faith , the squad gels during preseason friendlies and the bloody squad photograph will actually resemble the squad come September!…..Made sence to me.

In a way, I don’t think we need an attacking midfielder. I think we need a more mobile, spritely DM to let the attack minded players we already have push on. As I’ve said in the past, I like Butt, particularly after he came back from Birmingham and proved his worth, but he’s getting on, and not in a Makalele way 😉

Really don’t think Skjelbred is the answer… As I’ve said before, don’t think he’s got what it takes in Premier League.. Should’ve got him 3 years ago, bringing him up from the reserves about now. He’s an average player in the Norwegian top division, wouldn’t expect him to make too much difference. Guthrie was a lot cheaper and a much better choice if you ask me! Anyway, if Keegan wants him, then fine by me:) Midas Touch obviously

What has happend to the interest in Larsson at Birmingham. Weren’t we supposed to have put a bid in for him early summer?

Would probably be able to get him for the same amount being quoted for Skjelbred + his got the experience in the PL
