Keegan – I Haven’t Got Enough Players

Kevin Keegan talked to the Newcastle Journal this morning, and what he has to say about new signings is a little worrying. to say the least.

Kevin Keegan – doesn’t sound too confident on new signings

Kevin has new signings on his mind, as do all Newcastle fans right now, with just 5 days to go in the transfer window.

This is what Kevin said today to the Newcastle Journal when asked about the transfer situation:

“My optimism gets less the nearer that you get to the deadline. I’m still hoping that we’ll get a couple in, but if we don’t we’ll just have to soldier on,”

“I haven’t got enough players. I have lost five forwards and I’ve not got any people to come in. We had two teenagers on the bench tonight.”

“I suppose that if we don’t get any new players, I’ll just have to wait for all of those strikers to come back.”

As we reported earlier today, Kevin will have a meeting with owner Mike Ashley and recruitment head Dennis Wise, and we understand Managing Director Derek Llambias will also attend the meeting today.

There’s even talk of discussing a ?10M offer from Aston Villa for James Milner to be discussed, but if Newcastle accept that, we had better give up. Martin O’Neil, the Villa manager was at the game last night in Coventry.

We need to bring players in and James Milner and Michael Owen, who still has to sign a new contract at the club, simply cannot be allowed to leave.

This is the time Mike Ashley has to stand up and deliver for the club, and put some money on the line. As it turns out, we don’t have too long to wait to find out if he’s willing to do that, – the transfer deadline is in a short 5 days.

But if Kevin ends up short in numbers, there’s no excuse, because we’ve had all summer to correct that known problem.

And you could hardly have asked for better or more spirited performances from Kevin’s new team this season, but even the maestro cannot get blood out of a stone.

Stay tuned.

There will be a lot of discontent if no more players come in this week. If Milner is sold there will be hell on.

My optimisim in us going about our deals quietly has gone, i thought that due to the very little news we have heard that something behind the scenes was taking place, it seems now that that was because there was no news to report at all. If KK comes out and says that, im certain we won’t get anyone in.

This is frustrating! if we got more players we could be a force this season, now our good start and quality first 11 are going to dwindle during the months, when we could have mounted a decent top 8 challenge this year.

I am very dissapointed with MA, to say the least.

If you believed everything Keegan said Martins wouldn’t have made the Man Utd game, Owen wouldn’t have made Bolton and Ameobi will be our top scorer

It’s obvious guys, there are no more players coming in. Why call a meeting today when only 5 days remain of the window?
If any potential targets are identified it will take our lot weeks to negotiate.
Last night was a great spirited performance which should encourage “Cashley” (scrooge) to back KK to the hilt.
There is real potential with this current squad and 3 or 4 more quality signings will elevate us to at least mount a serious challange for Europe.

I think a strong target man is more important than many of us realised after last night’s game. I know we had 2 wingers playing up front but we need someone to permanently stnad by the last defender causing havoc. It was a bit better when Owen came on but then a couple of times he got too caught up in the passing game we were playing and wasn’t direct enough. He ended up in midfield and we had lost the focus of our attack. LB AM and Target man are essential.

I sincerely hope that we can strengthen our side. It is too small a squad to go through the season whn coping with injuries / suspensions. Anyone know what time this meeting with Mike Ashley is taking place?

On another matter, can one of the bloggers who is an expert on the laws of the game let me know about THAT throw in last night. As far as I understand the laws …. ” a small run up is permitted” ……. was it legal? I have my doubts. Comments please.

I honestly think it may be a bit more Newcastle United propoganda…

Knock em down before you build em back up – Everyone was cursing Ashley’s name, then in came Coloccini (he was only just sitting in the stands) and we’re happy again – created a feeling euphoria and optomism and led to a string of 4 great results!

I ‘HOPE’ this is the plan, because I’ve stood by Ashley since the begining and I genuinely believed he’d have something up his sleave…5 days left – but think back to last season: we signed our best 2 players of the window in the dying seconds…

Can we please all wait until September 1st before we start slagging big Mike again?

    AAAARGGGGHHHH!!!!!!!!!!

WTF is going on? I just dont understand all this.
Surely if MA wants us to move forward this year, he has to listen to his head coach and buy the extra players we need.

I can see KK doing the ‘long walk ‘if he doesn’t get the full backing of the owner. 🙁

What’s the point of having a dedicated transfer team (getting paid millions) if they dont get in the players we need??????????????????

Keeping my fingers crossed, but not holding my breath.

Do not think Ashley is to blame. To get quality players in we need KK’s charisma up front on transfers. Not these faceless suits strolling around with Wise! There is simply no oomph in NUFC’s efforts to get players as long as Wise etc play London desk footy.

Why all the negative comments at MA? Hasn’t he supported Keegan with every signing he’s wanted? Hasn’t he provided the cash when needed?

You wonder where the fickle fans comments originate, well just take a look in these comments.
One minute it’s good that MA won’t pay over the odds for unproven mercenaries and the next he’s berated for not splashing the cash on unproven “name” players, which is it going to be?
You say you want players to come to us only is they want to play for the club. So does KK and MA.
The right players just aren’t available. Again we are down to the argument that some fans want us to just sign players left right and centre. Is that what we really need? Signing someone just for the sake of it?
We can’t attract top tier players like Berbatov as we don’t have European football. We do need more players in, but don’t take it out on MA as he will back Keegan 100%

personally like jim has said i think keegan might be playing with the press again.

i wish i could share your optimism Jim but i dont know. i get the feeling he’s telling the absolute truth to be honest.
there maybe hasnt been too much movement recently behind the scenes regarding new faces and thats whats lead him to say it perhaps?
whatever happens, the squad isnt strong enough, and even with the top class additions we’ve made over the summer thus far, we’ll struggle with this squad.
say jonas gets injured (touch wood), midfield is practically back to square one, complete lack of creativity. who knows whats going to happen, but its safe to say new faces are vital in the final 6 days. Milner cannot go anywhere, no one can go anywhere if there’s any truth in what Kev is saying.

We all know that we NEED three players and we all know where we NEED them. Ashley talked about a WOW signing but I can’t see any signings now.

The only bit of activity I can sadly see is that we sell Milner and don’t offer Owen a new contract. If either of these things happen I can see Keegan resigning and he would be totally justified in doing so.

I’ve just broke the bank and bought season tickets for the whole family on top of my own ticket I’ve had for years and kept through thick and thin. Please do the same Ashley and quick!

I will be very annoyed if Ashley causes problems at NUFC and there are no excuses. Come on Ashley, get the cheque book out.

I’m still pretty optimistic about 3+ signings tbh. Yes this is a bit unsettling, but I’m confident Keegan, Ashley, Wise will pull a few players in, good players at that.

If we don’t sign anyone, and if Milner goes, then Ashley is going to suffer an enormous backlash! Sod the ‘wow’ signings, he just needs 3+ talented bodies 🙂

Hang on – who did Keegan say this too? When did he have time to talk to the Journal after last night’s match? They finished very late and then he went on telly for a good stint, talking to Sky first and then the ITV people for their highlights show.

What he said to them was that he needed more players, was missing 5 strikers at the start of the match and thought Milner and Owen were excellent. He never said we wouldn’t sign more, quite the oppositte – he said we NEEDED more and we’re trying.

Sometimes I think the Journal re-arrange quotes from the telly to mean something else. Wish they’d stop it because TalkSport are now reporting this morning’s meeting is a ‘crisis summit’, and that Ashley and Keegan’s ‘poor relationsip threatens to derail Newcastle’s season’. Rubbish – the meeting was already planned.

Stop scaremongering and wait till the end of the deadline.

The system that has developed for identifying and acquiring talent has been excellent based on the few we have got so far

I personally would rather have a small number of quality players, than a bunch of donkeys like Lardarse brought in last year.

and if O’neill has £10M burning a hole n his pocket for a trophy signing, let him have Milner – he is a canny player, but based on what I’ve seen so far, we can spend £10M better than that.

A mate off mine was at the game last night and had a breif chat with Ashley at the bar. He said ” getting some more quality signing in” and Ashley’s reply was ” you will be surprised in what we will sign before the window shuts” ..That was it…As a mob off newcastle fans ran over asking ashley to sign kaka 🙂

I think we’ll get at least 2 in my opinion…probably one this week and another 1 minute before the window closes..

If we sell Milner and don’t get at least, ATLEAST 3 first team players in it’ll be a nightmare and highlight MA’s intentions.

However we still have until Monday night (and it now looks like it’s gonna be another late night 🙂 ) to sort some new players out, really again if Milner’s sold we should be bringing in no less than 4-5 1st teamers in.

MA open ya wallet and get some more money spent.

I still think we’ll get the players in we need. If Keegan has said it I hope it’s a smoke screen to keep the press at bay.

I’ve always backed Ashley and I still think he’ll deliver. He’s stated that there’s money available for transfers.

If say, we didn’t sign anymore players in this window and we started getting a few injuries (which will happen if you can’t rest players) Then by the time the January window opens you could garentee we’d be looking at more teams above us than below us in the league.

I’m sure Ashley knows this, he isn’t stupid. I think they already have a list of players waiting to join us and Keegan has the last word on who he wants. Anything else just doesn’t make sense. They can’t start discussing what players they want now, it’s far too late.
