Guthrie Near To England Under-21 Honors

August 28th, 2008 · 64 Comments

Not many fans have been disappointed with the play of Danny Guthrie, the 21 year old who moved to Newcastle United from Liverpool in the summer.

Danny Guthrie challenges Michael Mifsud in Tuesday night’s game

Danny has only just turned 21 in April, and if he keeps his position in the first team starting line-up we would think Stuart Pearce would be almost compelled to have Danny in his England Under-21 squad.

Danny is about 15 months younger than our two current England Under-21 players Steven Taylor and James Milner, who were born in January of 1986.

Stuart Pearce talked to the Evening Chronicle before Tuesday’s match at the Ricoh Arena about out young impressive midfielder:

“I am having a good look at Danny Guthrie. He falls into the category of my age group.”“Anyone who is playing first-team football in the Premier League at his age has to be taken seriously.”

“He has not been our squad yet. We watched him at Bolton Wanderers last season and part of my job here tonight is to have another look at him.”

Guthrie was in the England schoolboy team when he was 15 years old but has not been capped by his country since that time.

But it would be fantastic if Danny does get capped, and we think if the lad keeps playing like he has been doing that will become a formality for Stuart, who is a good man.

And Pearce had glowing praise for the two current England Under-21 players Taylor and Milner, who are stalwarts in the side.

Pearce added:

“The two boys from Newcastle, Milner and Taylor, have been the cornerstones of the England Under-21 squad ever since I have been in charge.“They are the sort of kids you could build a house around.

“Milner is seven out of 10 every week. They are near enough the first boys I pick in my team never, mind the squad.”

“I am pleased that they are doing well for my old club and I am pleased that they are playing every week.”

There’s no doubt Danny has earned a call-up, and we’ll just have to see whether he makes the cut in Stuart’s next Under-21 squad.

But he’s an efficient and skilful player in midfield, and has the knack of nearly always playing the easy (and correct) ball - and that’s the sign of a very good player, when it looks so simple and easy what he does on the field.

Some of us, who have tried to replicate those skills on the football field, have proved many times over it’s not that easy. :D
Comments welcome.

    His time will come!

  • 2 Safferman // Aug 28, 2008 at 15:26

Dunno, he looked a bit quiet against bolton, hopefully starts making the headlines again after such a good start

  • 3 The Entertainers // Aug 28, 2008 at 15:28

    Anyway lads n lasses,

its all doom and gloom so if you want a quick pick me up just click on my name……

I bet it cheers you up!

  • 4 James // Aug 28, 2008 at 15:30

He bossed the midfield at Old Trafford and I think in time he will turn out to be the bargin of the decade.

£1.5 million for someone who does more than the £20 million Modric is good business.

Could even be a future captain.

what do people think of him?

  • 6 Spyro // Aug 28, 2008 at 15:36

great buy, tidy passer of the ball and always makes at least 2 or 3 superb passes per game

  • 7 Big Ricks Black Nd White Army // Aug 28, 2008 at 15:37

never mind under 21’s, he deserves a place in the seniour squad on current form

  • 8 MMNUFC // Aug 28, 2008 at 15:40

Careful he might be asking for a new contract soon! haha

  • 9 ToonRich // Aug 28, 2008 at 15:42

At last a positive sign for people to see from the club!! I’d agree, if he can perform most of the season like the OT game then he could be worth a call up to the senior squad!

Off subject, I see SWP has gone back to ManCity for around £10million…shame we didnt make a bid at the last minute.
I’ve also read that HENRIK LARSSON is considering offers from 3 EPL clubs, could we be one of them?? what do you guys think?
I would love to see Larsson @ SJP, a proven goal scorer for cheap :)

  • 10 Ant // Aug 28, 2008 at 15:44

I don’t know about bargain of the century James, we did sign Jonas for nowt as well!

  • 11 Tom // Aug 28, 2008 at 15:44

Henrik Larsson would be a good short term option definitely. Agreed, it is a shame about SWP.

  • 12 Tom_Toon // Aug 28, 2008 at 15:48

Guthrie looked great v Man Utd.
    Rubbish v Bolton.
    Brilliant v Cov.

  • 13 Ant // Aug 28, 2008 at 15:50

What’s with the negativity in the Bolton game? You people did see it?

Not many players look good against Bolton, it’s like playing table tennis against a brick wall.

  • 14 Spyro // Aug 28, 2008 at 15:52

even in the bolton game i remember him playing a couple of smart and accurate passes

  • 15 Neil Snowdon // Aug 28, 2008 at 15:53

    Dear Ed,

Guthrie and Butt work very well together and will probably be most effective away from SJP. Guthrie is fresh and learning fast. Some of his positional play needs refining, as he went missing for a short while in the later stages of the Coventry game - probably a bit tired!

I’ve deliberately kept my counsel during the last couple of days. I’m an optimist by nature and hope that we sign someone of quality by Monday.

I hope that if Milner plays on Saturday our away fans will not boo him as we will need even more fortitude than that shown at OT to gain a good result.

The chairman doesn’t need to say anything by the way - the club just need to post up the next signing!

    Regards,

    Neil

  • 16 James // Aug 28, 2008 at 15:55

Ant - Gutierrez will be marked out of games a lot of times by teams doubling up two defenders on him. Happened at Coventry already.

As for Guthrie this boy can handle himself. Some of his passing has been superb. A newspaper article at the weekend said Guthrie will be our Carrick.

I know a lot of Liverpool fans who were really annoyed Guthrie was sold. They believe he is exactly the type of player who should be coming through into the first team to learn from Gerard.

  • 17 Ant // Aug 28, 2008 at 15:55

    Well put Neil.

But a true optimist would not see the need for new signings. Our current crop are more than capable of securing European football for next season.

A couple of squad players would be nice. We do get unlucky with injuries.

  • 18 ToonRich // Aug 28, 2008 at 15:56

Be fair to the lad, he’s still settling in with his new team mates… take a look at Robbie Keane, we all know he’s a very good player, but in a L’pool shirt he’s looked average/crap so far!!

  • 19 ice dog // Aug 28, 2008 at 16:02

just a pity FC,BASEL got though CL last night they have canny CF and just a kid wont need the money now,10mill into coffers

  • 20 harumph // Aug 28, 2008 at 16:09

Liverpool have been woeful this season so far… drabber than usual. Without Torres, Carragher and Gerrard they would be a mid-table side… I think 18mil on Keane whilst letting Guthrie go for peanuts is shameful by Benitez. Still, it’s only 2 league games in and there is absolutely no way of knowing what we have in Guthrie… signs are promising though.
Has SWP gone for sure? Shame… don’t want Milner staying after he has submitted a transfer request now. Who could we replace him with though in time?

  • 21 shoesoff // Aug 28, 2008 at 16:09

A great signing by the looks of it and not the only one.
Silence from the club = 4 great signings 2 wins and a draw at Trafford.
They can keep me in the dark and feed me with sh1te as long as that continues.

  • 22 Bobby Ollox // Aug 28, 2008 at 16:11

Early days - once upon a time I would not have rated anyone that Liverpool let go, but these days they dont have the same pulling power.

It might be the case that we end up swapping him for Milner + £8M, which seems like a good deal.

  • 23 shoesoff // Aug 28, 2008 at 16:15

As for contracts, if milner is worth more than 35k a week (my opinion is he’s not) then what should we pay Owen? 150k, 200k he brings so much to the club, not just the team, that I don’t understand why people have it in for him.
The fact that he is here will sell the club to a lot of players, JM won’t.

  • 24 James // Aug 28, 2008 at 16:21

10 years ago, Guthrie would be given a chance at Anfield and we’d all be saying wish we could get him to Newcastle but we know we have no chance.

Nowdays we get english players like this on the cheap because the top four only want proven foreigners.

It really amuses me that they wanted Barry for all that money when they had a player of Guthrie’s ability for free right under their noses.

Benetiz was a fool for letting him go. KK is a god for bringing him to SJP.

  • 31 Ross // Aug 28, 2008 at 16:32

green13-i had problems with my copy of FM08 too. installed it onto my laptop and it worked fine but after a while it just stopped, laptop was unresponsive when i put the game into the machine. however i installed it onto a different pc, and it worked fine. so like my laptop, it could just be your pc!?
either that or a dodgey batch of games is a possibility, doubt it though?

hhhmmm yes same with me but when i put it on my mates laptopit still didnt work thanks though

  • 37 Born Again Geordie // Aug 28, 2008 at 16:44

  • 38 Hertz // Aug 28, 2008 at 16:52

    Agree with Neil.
Booing your own player/team/manager is utter ignominous!

  • 39 Born Again Geordie // Aug 28, 2008 at 16:54

    Green-
    Is it pirated?

  • 41 Davies // Aug 28, 2008 at 16:56

I really like this lad. He’s a sturdy little player and he’s happy to be at the club. Fair play to him if he gets an Under 21 call up, he’s the sort of player that will end up in the sennior national team.

He’s got guts, skills and stamina and those things combined make Rafa a fool for selling him. Having new additions like this takes the sting out of the whole Milner fiasco. Younger, more skilled and works just as hard.

  • 42 YongFC // Aug 28, 2008 at 16:59

i think maybe about the crack files for the fm 2008. you may try copy the all crack files from the disc and paste it into files fm2008.

Heres an idea, buy fifa 09, the only good football game series where you dont have to sit on your computer playing it by yourself.

At least with fifa you can challenge your mates.

  • 47 green13 // Aug 28, 2008 at 17:10

    heres an idea f~~k off!!

  • 49 toonjon // Aug 28, 2008 at 17:17

Tom_Toon how can he buy fifa 09 when it isnt even out.
Nothing wrong with fm, its a good game to play on the pc, better than fifa.
Closest thing to being a manager.
green13, i had the same problem with fm not loading up, but i cant remeber how i got it wokring again. i think i unistalled i tthen reinstalled it.

  • 50 Tom_Toon // Aug 28, 2008 at 17:18

Buy when it comes out then, i have pre-ordered already.

  • 51 Danish_Magpie // Aug 28, 2008 at 17:19

    Tom_Toon,

I play FM 08 with my mates. The networking part of the game is actually great, and lots of fun.

Prefer Pro Evo for action game.

  • 52 toonjon // Aug 28, 2008 at 17:21

this year is gunna be pro evo’s year again. Not in graphics as fifa will always have the better graphics but in gameplay.
Cant wait to play as newcstle and play like we do in real life. good passing and moving.

really hope we sign someone SOOOOOOOOOON.
Appartely there is supposed to be an announcemtn @ 6 according to someone on the chronicle live forum, but most likely its bull.

  • 53 Tom_Toon // Aug 28, 2008 at 17:23

You cant play FM with your mates in the same room!

  • 54 Ross // Aug 28, 2008 at 17:23

tom toon-fifa isnt the only good football game series. sure if you wanna run about with someone who looks exactly like rooney or ronaldinho then yeah. the realism aspect of the game is brilliant.
but as far as gameplay goes, pro ev wipes the floor with fifa.

  • 55 Tom_Toon // Aug 28, 2008 at 17:27

Pro Evo gets on my wick. The fake names and the fake player names.

    ‘Tyneside United’

  • 56 Danish_Magpie // Aug 28, 2008 at 17:29

    Yes you can!

I play with my mates in my living room, so how can you tell me I can’t? Wireless internet, we all are connected and play together.

You have to have beer at the same time though..

  • 57 Danish_Magpie // Aug 28, 2008 at 17:31

The Pro Evo thing with the names can be frustrating, but I prefer the gameplay to FIFA. But to each his own..

  • 58 Ross // Aug 28, 2008 at 17:32

we were newcastle united in the most recent pro ev. real team, real strip, real names, because owen endorsed it and was on the box.
Fifa just got a bad name for it being too easy to score, so now theyve just made it awkward to finish infront of goal.
rare that the through ball can be used properly too, even if there’s a through ball quite clear they’ll put it straight to a defender.

i do like the penalties on fifa though. and the camera angles.

  • 59 ice dog // Aug 28, 2008 at 17:39

why dont you game boys on computers start achat room and let the toon lads talk footy on this great site

  • 60 toonjon // Aug 28, 2008 at 17:46

sorry ice dog forgot you were the owner of this site. its only a few of us and were still talking aobut newcastle at the same time. threres not much else to talk about any way.
Just buying some time until we have something good to talk about, like a signing.

  • 61 Ross // Aug 28, 2008 at 17:51

sorry ice dog, im surprised you’re not down the pub with your lads having a pint with the lads talking football with the lads.

  • 62 LATINAMERICATOON // Aug 28, 2008 at 17:58

The team I would put up to face arsenal wouldn’t include milner as his mind is definetly on a move. this is my team if all players are fit.

    Given
    Beye Taylor Colocini enrique
    Gurierrez Guthrie Butt N’zogbia
    Owen Carroll
    What doyou think?

  • 63 SwedEric // Aug 28, 2008 at 21:40

Why would Milners mind be somewere ells? If i could use one word to explain Milner I would chose Professional!

He left the transferrequest over a week ago, and still got MOM last thusday… Proves to me he wants to do as good as possible, as long as he is here to me!

  • 64 clinta // Aug 29, 2008 at 1:15

Not convinced of Guthries greatness myself just yet, don’t think ‘there’s no doubt his earned a call up’? there is a doubt,

when selecting a squad you go for the best, and ‘m not real sure who else pearce has in midfield, but i’m guessing they’d be no mugs either?
