Gutierrez - Carling Cup Important For Our Fans

August 28th, 2008 · 159 Comments

Jonas Gutierrez, who is one of our players who is not going anywhere before Monday, principally because he’s only just arrived last month, gave a good interview again to the Evening Chronicle yesterday, which we overlooked because of the James Milner news.

Jonas Gutierrez - had another very good game

Jonas had another all action game for us on Tuesday evening in our amazing and difficult 3-2 win against a spirited Coventry City side.

Jonas told the Chronicle:

“It was a very good victory for the supporters – although we would have preferred not to have conceded that goal in the last minute.”

“We didn’t want extra time because our fans had traveled so far, but we had to do it.” “It was great to play in an English cup tie for me and it was obvious how important it was to our fans.”

“We were happy to show them we feel the same way by getting the result in the end and getting into the next round.”

Gutierrez has now played against 3 English sides so far in champions Manchester United, battling Bolton and Championship play-off hopefuls Coventry City, and has performed so well. Along with his compatriot Fabricio, who is looking top class in everything he does.

Gutierrez added:

“We thought we had done enough to win but Coventry came back at us and we had to start again.” “But we did it again and we have to be happy to be into the next round now.”

“The striker role is different for me.” “But I want to play and will play in any position.

“My manager wanted me to play there so, of course, I agreed.” “If it means doing a job for the team I am more than happy to do so.”

We expect Michael Owen is now ready to start against Arsenal in the Premier League on Saturday at 5:30pm, and we expect Gutierrez will be out wide on the left again.

But Gutierrez is already a fan of his captain as he said:

“Michael is a very important player for us.” “He’s like all great strikers, he gets the goals and we need him.”

It‘s great that Jonas thought of the fans when extra time was announced because he knew it may be difficult for them on their return journeys, that’s a nice touch.

And we continue to be amazed by Jonas who seems to have been at the club for years – all four signings played on Tuesday night, and all four gave good accounts of themselves,

And another thing we learned on Tuesday is that Bassong will be pushing Taylor hard for the first team jersey, as he looked very good, given he’s only had a handful of games for us.

Another great signing by Kevin.

That’s right NUFC get new fan favourite Guiterrez to give an interview to help calm us down over this whole Milner thing. Woops getting cynical…

Very pleased with the four signings we have made. All have been really good value-for-money.

  • 5 Spyro // Aug 28, 2008 at 13:08

i agree Ed, Bassong looked very impressive

well atleast some r happy to play for the jersey shame that every 1 doesnt give their all
now im fed up i wanted to give ashley a chance but now can he please go all he has done has caused problems!!!!
now all the players want to go now
    - milner
    - shorly owen
    - who else will cotton on to it?

  • 7 Spyro // Aug 28, 2008 at 13:09

Do people think we will get the 2 or 3 signings KK was talking about a week or so ago?

  • 8 Danny // Aug 28, 2008 at 13:14

Must say, im very interested in the fans reactions on Milner against Arsenal…Same if Joey comes on, which has been hinted.
I suspect i wont be a pretty sight.

Looks like things around the club will get a little worse before it gets better.

  • 9 Matty // Aug 28, 2008 at 13:14

i think jonas on the right would be sooooo much better than milner. his crosses into the box are so dangerous. He is bags more pace and can beat his man time and time again. milner plays with 200% effort and heart but his best performance was the other night against a championship side. i would snap aston villas hands off if they bid £10m. use it to help towards a creative midfielder, a defensive midfielder and possibly a striker. we still have barton to come back as well. I think everyone is over reacting about the james milner thing, i will be gutted to see him leave but for that money then we dont have much choice really!!

Spyro in theory this whole thing with Milner should not affect our recruitment team in still bringing in the signings that were promised. However if Milner and Owen signed new contracts I would happily wait until January to get the new signings in. You never know with us at the moment the club seem to play their cards very close to their chests.

  • 12 SuperShearer // Aug 28, 2008 at 13:20

None of my posts ever make it up….it’s very frustrating Ed are we trying to sort this out? Big fan of the site otherwise keep up the great work.

  • 13 Davies // Aug 28, 2008 at 13:22

Dan_from_france, hello my simple old son. Cotton on to what exactly, that Milner wants a pyrise when he hasn’t earned it?

That the club won’t bend to the will of a 22 year old midfielder (who provided two assists last season)?

That 3 year contracts can be ignored because a players agent doesn’t think it’s fair anymore?

T-G-W, as it says in Ed’s article, Jonas gave the interview yesterday, probably before the news about Milner broke. I doubt it was scheduled to coinside with the bad news, but if you want to believe that, you carry on.

  • 14 Cyprus-Toon // Aug 28, 2008 at 13:28

Imo Milner is a class act & is still only 22, so imagine what he’ll be like when he’s Jonas age, he’ll be awesome, so I say no to selling him, especially to one or theteams we’ll be competing against for a european place, come on guys, think before you post…
I also think Ashley doesn’t want to put any more money into the club & is probably thinking about selling up in maybe January or just before, as I don’t think this Steve Mchanon visit was just about advertising the TOON in Singapore, there’s defo more to it imo!!!
So no more signing, sell off our best assets, up the prices of ST & buy the fans of with free beer!!! is this all the Ashley regime is going to offer us is it… if so, I think it’s about time the fans did the talking by not attending the matches untill something changes….. :(

Why aren’t my comments showing on here???

  • 16 The Entertainers // Aug 28, 2008 at 13:36

I see Henrik Larrson is in talks with 3 unnamed Premier clubs.

Could we be one of them?

    How old is he anyway?

    Would he be any good?

I dont know!! I am kind of hoping for a more permanent / wow signing! But hes better than nothing.

  • 17 Mag1Pie // Aug 28, 2008 at 13:38

Get Ashley out of Toon!!!…He is destroying the club and this time if KK walks I would rollout the red carpet for him at the St James Park exit door because he is being undermined in everything he does! Long live the Messiah!

If Milner leaves Jonas can take the right, Zog the left, Butt can hold and Guthrie can drive through the centre.

    Still a very good midfield.

  • 23 Luke // Aug 28, 2008 at 13:41

In my humble opinion, Bassong looked fantastic, and dare I say it, better than Taylor in ALL respects. Fast, strong, reads the game well, good head, composed. What a signing.

  • 24 Marty // Aug 28, 2008 at 13:44

Jonas is pure quality,Quite shocked that his workrate is so good as i didn`t expect that with a South American.
    Bags of talent he has.
    About the Milner Situation!!!!!!!!!!
Sell James if he Aint happy with his 500 quid a week.We can get someone else thats quality for the cash we get.
Just look what we got in Jonas for the money, now he is already worth the cash.

Milner not that good I agree. SWP or Turan would be a better alternative. Enrique must play at left back then the defense would be even better than it has looked. Bassong left footer could he play there?
    Still time for signings.

  • 28 Stami // Aug 28, 2008 at 13:51

a little bit off topic but…check what i found on Wiki about Mike Ashley(i know wiki is not the most reliable source, a good read non the less)

“Ashley was seen as an intensely private person, who never attended industry functions or gives interviews.[1] Philip Beresforde, who compiles the annual Sunday Times list, said neither he nor his staff have ever managed to contact Ashley, and describes him as “easily Britain’s answer to the late Howard Hughes.”[2] However, since Sports Direct International Plc went public, and his purchase of Newcastle United where he has taken to sitting in the stands with fans, Ashley has taken on a more public and accessible persona.”

taken off his Wiki page! could be a reason why we hardly ever hear from the man!

  • 29 azza jones // Aug 28, 2008 at 13:53

I think we all just need to chill out about the Milner news after reading all 200 comments I think opinion is divided but its true he does have potential but is alot of the time quite ordinary. People are acting like Oba or Owen just handed in the transfer request!

Barry wanted to leave Villa, Adebeyor was close to a move, Flamini left Arsenal, Hleb left arsenal. It will be okay everyone. James milner is not anywhere near these guys quality.

Im not that bothered if we sell him, as long as we get 10mil and hopefull have our eyes on a replacement. SWP, Arda, Arshavin Lennon would all be good signings…..

4 more days to go KEEP THE FAITH!!!!

Jonas is superb, what a great attitude. But I agree with Matty about playing him on the right, his crossing will be far more effective on that side compared to Milner’s. Oh and Portsmouth out of the running for SWP, on Sky Sports News.

  • 37 SwedEric // Aug 28, 2008 at 14:12

Henrik Larsson is on the verge of leaving Helsingborg, I have read in the swedish newpaper… If he will leave for the PL, he will atleast be cheap, reckon a maximum of 1M pund.

Everyone know what he did at Man utd just 2 years ago, and he still plays like the old Larsson.

When players reach over 30, you usaly se they get worse and worse by the mounth… Larsson doesn´t.

But, he is 37 I think, wich isn´t realy a normal transfer for a PL club!

Would like to se a swede in the team, no doubt! But that swede should be Sebastian Larsson (or Ibrahimovic ;) ) not Henrik, to old… Altough he is a perfekt professional!

  • 40 gallowgate-jamie // Aug 28, 2008 at 14:13

no scolari said that malouda will get a chance at chelsea this season, we wont get him. what we should do is play nzog on the left let enrique go lb and hav jonas on the right (as he can play on either wing). obviously we still need cover. milner wants to leave because of contract demands yeah? well, despite him being a poor crosser and all that, he is still a good squad member for us so it wuld probably be in our best interests to boot his contract up a bit. If what the media is saying is true though, that we will get 10 mil for him then and only then if keegan can find a better winger than him we should let him leave. its pointless getting rid of players even for big money if we cant replace them.

why do you never update this website?

its canny good but it needs updating more often

  • 46 steve // Aug 28, 2008 at 14:31

I’d imagine there’ll be no announcement until they resolve the Milner dispute either by him accepting more cash or a club putting in a suitable bid.

Looking unlikely that there’ll be more signings in this window - unforunately a lot of good players just don’t want to come to the toon - especially if it’s Dennis Wise selling the club to them as it looks like at the moment, it seems Keegan isn’t involved in the actual talking to the player and is therefore unable to sell his vision until the players agreed to join which is a massive mistake in my book

  • 47 Spyro // Aug 28, 2008 at 14:32

i knew SWP would go to City, they are the only team out of all who were interested who would realistically be willing to match his Chelsea wages. Once again he proves he is worthy of the name $WP, money grabbing mercenary.

Then again i have known this ever since he turned down the opportunity to play for his boyhood team in favour of joining Chelsea. Didnt want him anyway tbh, overrated and too lightweight

  • 48 ToonDaft // Aug 28, 2008 at 14:35

tbh, I am gutted we have missed out on him - little worried as well as I think (just imo of course) KK would have definitely wanted him - have we not bid? i am a little worried about our recruitment plans now mind

  • 49 Ross // Aug 28, 2008 at 14:38

spyro-agreed. leaves man city to join up with chelsea for the big $$$$’s, then when he’s not getting played there, who’ll take him back?
the very club he left for the big bucks, who just so happen to now also, be able to offer him the big $$$’s.
dont want anyone like that anywhere near newcastle let alone starting every week.
spyro mate, i normally agree with you, so what do you think our chances are of getting say, 2 or 3 faces in before the window closes?

  • 55 Danish_Magpie // Aug 28, 2008 at 14:45

    Spyro:

You seem very critical of almost every player, especially mainstram English players. SWP may, like most of us, be motivated by money, but he never sulked for 3 years at Chelsea, and he was a hell of a player at City. That Chelsea paid big bucks for him is not his fault, and it’s not like he treated City badly when he left, they just got a huge offer and took the money.

I would have liked SWP here. It’s not worked out, so we target someone else, but he is a good player.

And in my opinion so is Milner. And I don’t hate Taylor either, and I don’t think we should be selling our England U-21 internationals to be honest..

  • 56 Spyro // Aug 28, 2008 at 14:46

so we should give them a shot!!!

  • 69 Danish_Magpie // Aug 28, 2008 at 14:53

Yes I know he was getting paid a lot, but that’s not his fault. You can’t blame players for their wages. You can blame them if they bitch and moan or if they threaten to go on strike and dont want to live up to their contracts etc. but the club decided to pay him that much.

As for mainstream players being overrated; yes, some are. But I also believe it’s become a bit of the cool thing to do for knowledgable footie fans to think all the mainstream players are crap and ony want 17-20 year olds from Russia and Africa. Yes, there is lots of talent out there, but there is also lots of talent amongst established international stars like SWP. (Btw. I am not a HUGE fan of him, I just think he is a good little player).

As for the weather in DK. Was raining and shite yesterday, today it’s ok but not great. We have had about 10 days of summer this year..

I wouldn’t want to see us move for Malouda either. He has ability, but he would not fancy playing for us, and thus we would never see his potential, so let’s stay clear of an expensive mistake.

I do think he has the ability tho.

spyro-i’m stuck in the middle as far as the whole transder saga goes.
i’ve been really pleased with the fact we’ve baught quality of cheap this summer, and the player’s we’ve signed look very impressive. panic buying hasnt been on the agenda.
however, i do feel we need 2 or 3 players to strengthen up the squad, and time is running out. obviously i dont want us to panic buy..but the numbers are needed and i think everyone knows that.
who knows what we’ll do though, theres been no news of anything moving forward as far as signings go this week, the only news has been milner out. just have to wait and see i think.

  • 77 zogs // Aug 28, 2008 at 15:00

nial and biffa disagree with you, arshavain would be great i think he fast can beat players great passer and quite strong on ball,i would be well chuffed if we could get him

  • 78 Danish_Magpie // Aug 28, 2008 at 15:00

See, Tom_Toon’s suggestion to paly Donaldson is kind of what I am talking about. Just because he is 17 doesn’t make him the right choice. He may have potential to develop into a decent player, but it seems that these days that as long as a player is young, people are shouting for them to get in the team.

Donaldson is not ready to start a game at the Emirates. How could we even have seen enough of him to suggest that? Unless you’ve been attending u-17 games and such for the past couple of years..

Cries for Tozer, Donaldson, Kadar etc. in our first-team are not really realistic. It’s not FM, a team of 17-year olds will get torn to shreds. Easing in Lua-Lua and Carroll is okay when they get fit, but we can’t just throw kids in there as it will stun their development if they are not ready, rather than aid it.

ross you only panick buy on the last day so how yo no where not gonna do it i hope we do panic buy because the panic guy could be a very good adition to the club!

  • 80 Spyro // Aug 28, 2008 at 15:02

I think we may do what Everton have done, and quickly start bringing in our second choice targets. I would not be happy with this and i would rather be short of numbers in all honesty

Beye was certainly a nice panic buy :-)

  • 83 Tom_Toon // Aug 28, 2008 at 15:05

    Dont agree.

We have nobody to play upfront and Owen cant play there on his own.

Donaldson has been a regular for the reserves since he was 15.

  • 84 Danish_Magpie // Aug 28, 2008 at 15:05

Spyro: I agree with your point #79.

We should be bringing in quality that can strengthen us. We should NOT be adding to the wage bill because we feel pressured to sign SOMEONE. In that case I prefer soldiering on with what we’ve got.

  • 85 zogs // Aug 28, 2008 at 15:05

ssn’s doing my head its all about swp going to city getting depressed wish we had big signing!Do think city fans are living in the past as swp has done nout for last 3 years and when i watched him looked like he had lost his ability to go past players, maybe jusst a conferdiance thing

  • 88 t-g-w // Aug 28, 2008 at 15:06

Beye wasn’t so much of a panic buy cos we’d tried to sign him about a month before we actually did but he turned us down then. No idea what changed his mind but thank f**k he did!

  • 89 Spyro // Aug 28, 2008 at 15:08

what i want to know is, will milner play against arsenal? He has been professional thus far, i feel he owes it to us to at least make himself available and put in a good shift

  • 90 Danish_Magpie // Aug 28, 2008 at 15:08

    Tom_Toon:

Doesn’t make him ready for the prem. Portillo and Chopra would have been the best strikeforce in the world if reserve football was anything to go by.

We can easily play with M. Owen up top and Gutierrez and N’Zogbia off him like in my post #62. It’s far from ideal because Owen is not suited for a lone-striker role at all, really doesn’t play to his strength, but I don’t think starting Donaldson makes sense either. Him coming on in the last 10-15 is one thing…

It’s kinda frustrating that we have:
Owen, Oba, Viduka, Carroll, Ameobi, Smith on the books and we are struggling to put 1 striker on the team-sheet!

  • 91 James // Aug 28, 2008 at 15:08

put 10m in for de jong him and guthrie would be superb,i dont think a cretive mid is essential because we play down the wings a lot and guthrie can find and pass and de jon g would set the tempo very similar to diara of portsmouth

  • 98 Luke // Aug 28, 2008 at 15:17

I agree with Spyro, would rather we didn’t panic buy. To be honest, as much as we need a couple of players in, we can cope til january without barring a horrible mass injury list. And in such circumstance, we can bring in the kids just like Roeder did a few years ago. My only wish is that Geremi would retire. I cring every time I see him on the teamsheet. What a hinderance that man is. The human impediment.

  • 99 Luke // Aug 28, 2008 at 15:20

agree with what your saying spyro although i normally dont. shame swp went back to city but i dont think hes the type of personality we need under king kev.
i think arshavin wold revel in the prem - hes at the end of his career and has just started proving his quality. on the money front ashley said it was there for the right player and i have faith in him.
on topic jonas really will be a great servant for this club - what a ledgend! exactly the type of player we need. if wise, jiminez and co. picked him up then im happy with them.
by the way does nobody fancy jimmy bullard? iv said this before but he kept fulham in the prem last year and he can score goals. if we sell milner and buy him we will still have at least 4 mill left over.

  • 103 The Entertainers // Aug 28, 2008 at 15:22

  • 111 Ross // Aug 28, 2008 at 15:29

nial and biffa-i dont know we’re not going to panic buy. what i meant by it not being on the agenda was that the players we’ve brought in so far look real quality, and we were continually linked with others, who if they were anything like previous names, would also be quality, and i thought we had a genuine chance of getting them. eg, panic buying didnt look like something we needed to worry about.
now, i really dont know. but like you say spyro, i’d rather get say, 1 other quality addition in, then 2 or 3 complete panic buys. waste of money, waste of space. spend the money wisely and get in someone who will improve the starting 11.

    Tom_Toon

There isn’t anyone that can play with thim. That’s why I am suggesting a formation with him playing striker with Gutierrez just off him, and N’Zogbia and/or Milner for example supporting him.

We have to live in the real world and play a formation that suits the players available.

  • 116 Faustino // Aug 28, 2008 at 15:33

  • 117 Spyro // Aug 28, 2008 at 15:33

i would never boo Milner, he is being greedy, but he has worked hard for us and put in some good performances.
Im with Danish, we should put out the strongest possible team to win the match, i do not agree with TT that we havent got a chance of winning as i see Arsenal as very vulnerable right now. I think Butt and Guthrie, if on form, will dominate their midfield now Flamini has gone and i also think Jonas and Zog will prove very hard for them to deal with when we go on the counter attack. Jonas should have a lot of space to run into this saturday and i am looking forward to seeing him live. As a NUFC fan i want to see us attack and go for the win against every team much like Arsenal, Tottenham and Man U do

Anyone else going to be at the emirates saturday?

  • 118 magpie6699 // Aug 28, 2008 at 15:35

Intersting that Geremi can generate such antipathy and Milner such adulation? I’m a Milner fan and also not keen on Geremi -BUT I can recall Geremi scoring at least as many goals and putting in far more telling assists - as the stats prove and apparently MO has realised according to his comments about Geremi. Isn’t it funny how reality and our perception can be so different - maybe it’s because I always wish Geremi was allowed to use a wheelchair to speed up.

  • 119 Tom_Toon // Aug 28, 2008 at 15:35

Milner should not even be on the bench, let him rot.

Play 4-4-2 otheriwse we probably wont score against Arsenal!

  • 120 Luke // Aug 28, 2008 at 15:39

It’s hypothetical Entertainers. If didn’t play, someone else would have who could clear the first man with their corners and not give the ball away endlessly.

I think we’d cause more damage with Jonas on the wing. I feel he’s wasted up front. I have a feeling Milner will play just behind Owen, pack the midfield and try and break when we can. Fingers crossed the Arse have another off day.

This aint going to light any fires, but I think Voltz would be good cover for right back.

I’d like to see Bassong start, but it will be Taylor in his place. I was very happy to see Enrique have a good game at Coventry and also set up Owen’s goal. Beye’s been a bit off the boil thus far. Butt’s been Butt, Guthrie simple and steady, Given pure class. And we’ve finally replaced Woodgate.

  • 121 SwedEric // Aug 28, 2008 at 15:39

To buy for the sake of it, and then pay wages for them during 4 years isnt realy good buisness, even if it would make a lot of fans happy atm, and then slag it off after the season…

I have watched alot of reservgames, and Carrol is on a nother planet to Donaldson, and Carrol hasn´t realy set the premier league on fire, have he? Donaldson is just not good enough. And I respect your opinions TT usaly, but it would be better to play Milner, or anyone up front intsteed, weather we think we will win or loose.

I hope for some new players, Arshavin would be golden for exampel. But if we don´t buy 2-3 new, I take that as the right players wasn´t intrested, or for sale, and then it´s better to not buy! Simple.

We know for a fact we wanted Modric and Aimar, so it´s not like KK and MA doesn´t understand an ACM is needed! But when we buy one, they have to be good enough also!

  • 122 Danish_Magpie // Aug 28, 2008 at 15:39

4-5-1, 4-3-3, 4-4-2, it’s just numbers. Don’t get me wrong, formations can differ, but how we define it on paper is irrelevant. What we need are good, clear ideas about how we are going to play football, and I think KK has given the team that.

I’ve been harshly critical of Milner over all this, still am BUT if he is available on Saturday and prepared to put a shift in then he should play. Anyone who boos him is as much a disgrace for their disloyalty to the shirt as he is for threatening to walk out on us if he doesn’t get his wadge of cash.

On another note - “panic buy” doesn’t always mean you buy people the club doesn’t want. KK and the “recruitment team” might have 2 or 3 they’re looking at for a particular position and they end up going for the one who is easier to get. Happened with Beye last season and that was well worth it.

i agree with luke. bassong looked v impressive against cov. i know hes untried in the league but he could be a class signing. him and colo should be 1st choice eventually.

i also think enrique and zoggy both looked gd at cov. enrique should start at lb at arsenal with zog in midfield. then jonas could play wide right and guthrie in the middle with butt. no need for milner as long as we sign 4-5 players which im hoping we will. anyone else think we might be leaving the transfers late so cashley can get the best prices, especially on players like turan whose clubs need to sell?

I can only speak for myself, but I don’t mind that you contribute, Tom_Toon with stuff that’s your opinion, whether it’s players in the better known leagues, or more obscure ones. I do think you are knowledgable about minor leagues and lesser known players (although I hope you don’t assume you are the only one who follows non-mainstram players!)

My point is just that I think a sort of menatlity has developed amongst relatively knowledgable football fans like yourself. It seems that anyone who is established is almost per definition overrated, whilst anyone who is young or unknown is necessarily a bargain. There is a reason that established players have reputations - it’s cuz they have proven quality at the highest levels. Sometimes reputations are overinflated, yes, but it’s just important to remember that just because a young player is showing decent signs, doesn’t mean he can just walk into a premier league starting line-up.

Milner for Malouda? Yikes…whatever you think about the two players in terms of skills, Milner outworks Malouda in every sense. And isn’t that what KK is trying to build? A hard working Newcastle?
Have to disagree on the Bassong comment though, Ed. I found him at fault positionally against Coventry on a number of occasions. He left Coll alone with two at least twice, yet failed to double-team the winger with Enrique…you’ve got to do one or the other, not just stand there looking gormless!!! He would have cost us points in both Prem games so far…the lad has a bit of growing up to do before he starts challenging Steven.

  • 159 Lew Davies // Aug 28, 2008 at 19:49

Whats the point of having a youth team/policy, if you are never going to play them?
How can they ever be good enough if you dont play them?
How can youngsters break through from other teams (Rooney?) but they are never good enough from Newcastle?
Surely at sometime these lads have got to be given a chance to prove themselves ?
Of course if we had a senior team that was strong and winning game after game, then it would be a lot easier to give these lads 15 mins at the end of games.
    HO HUM!!!!
