Keegan - We Had A Great Meeting Wednesday

August 29th, 2008 · 164 Comments

Kevin Keegan is confident that he will have some new players through the door by Monday night, and Kevin was extremely upbeat during his press conference today.

some

Kevin Keegan - as upbeat as ever - we have players coming in :D

Kevin revealed there are two players almost through the door right now,  with 4-5 others in the fire. :D

That’s great news - but let’s first of all see what Kevin had to say today:

“I would think we’ve got a very good chance of getting three or four players in,” “The money (from Milner’s transfer) will be available to me.”

“But the money was there to buy players even if we did not sell James Milner.” “We’re looking for three or four to bring in and I think we’ll get them.” “We have four or five irons in the fire with two of them quite far down the line.”

Keegan is determined to only add real quality to his squad, which he has done this summer, with the excellent four signings he has already made.

He also said he came out of the Mike Ashley meeting feeling very good, after a meeting he said was great, and in which Newcastle owner Mike Ashley was very positive.

Kevin said today:

“We had a great meeting on Wednesday,” “The owner is absolutely committed to this club.” “But Mike Ashley can only give us the finance, we have to get the right players in.”

“It’s now a case of getting that quality in before Monday.” “You got lets of offers of players at this time of year but the secret is to pick the right ones.” “If you’re going to let players go you have to make sure you replace them with quality.

“No-one will argue that the ones we’ve got in so far are quality.” “They are players who care and put the shirt on and do a real good shift for the club.”

“But we are in a great position at this club because we have not got any deadwood.” “Some clubs are looking to move five or six on but we’re now just looking to add to our squad.”

Yes, we have to pick the right players, but there are not many managers as good as doing that as Keegan, which he has proved over and over agin.

We have one thing to say in all of this - if Kevin is happy we are happy, and it certainly goes not appear that Ashley has pulled the rug under form kevin.

Boy - we feel so much better all of a sudden.

Comments welcome.

i’m suprised at the sale of milner, i would of expected us to hold on to him and reavaluate the situation in january or so

hope we do get some players in, but harder to make sure they are the right ones if the deals are rushed

  • 9 Safferman // Aug 29, 2008 at 14:33

Wow havent we heard that before, every time the fans are unhappy we’re made promises of “3-4″ new
signings, which probably means 1 more, followed by excuses on how we got outbid by spurs wage offers etc…
When last did any club sign 4 new players in 3 days?? Which is what needs to happen now.
Tuesday morning will show the truth of where we stand with this club…

  • 10 nufc supporter // Aug 29, 2008 at 14:33

if the money was there anyway to buy players why have we sold milner! dosent make sense!

  • 12 Callum // Aug 29, 2008 at 14:34

Same as you Ed - If KK is happy, Im happy :)

One thing worrying me tho is Owen’s contract, that should be our next signing to be honest, getting him signed will make me very happy indeed :)

if we sign someone foriegn, do you think he will have shit loads of pubes?

  • 16 Mark Dixon // Aug 29, 2008 at 14:36

What are you on about….We also need a specialist RW now that Milner has gone!!

Jonas, Duff, Zog all like to play on the LW… And are better there!!

We only really have Geremi on the Right side!!

Selling Milner was stupid and a huge mistake…Villa fans are veryu lucky that they get to watch 2 of the best wingers in the country week in week out now!!

This WOW signing better come as i feel the club have let us loyal fans down,

Keegan could be in for abit of stick aswell stating that we have 2 signings on the wire…and possibly another 3..

Well if you ask me, The 2 best be bloooomin awesome and the other 2/3 of a Jonas/Collicini/Guthrie quality as losing Milner is losing alot of talent & Attacking prowess!!

Yes i know he had his faults, But he was our best AM! And you great fans know it!!

Come On Toon, Get in the quality & lets continue our fantastic start to the season ;)

i hope we sign Gokhan Inler hes meant to have a huge knob.

  • 23 Fergie // Aug 29, 2008 at 14:40

Keegan isn’t the kind of guy that acts upbeat to the media if he isn’t. he tells it how it is. Therefore, he must have a high quality replacemnt for milner lined up. After all, if he didn’t, he would’nt hav agreed to sell Milner and if Milner had been sold without Keegan’s permission, he would either have walked by now, or at least be very downbeat. Therefore, I think the weeks delay between receiving the transfer request and announcing it to the public was a smart move by the club, giving them the time needed to find a replacement. Keegan has stated that he would not have sold milner if he didn’t think it would move the club forward. obviously, he has lined up a quality replacement. As for those of you who were calling for ashley’s head in the ;ast few days, you should be ashamed and go support a club worthy of your fickleness like the mackems…

Safferman - er… Everton have practically signed 3 in 2 days and probably will have more, so if they can do it why can’t we.

I seriously think some fans just like to be pessimistic, and it wouldn’t make a difference if KK took a lie detector test, they would still say that MA had rigged it. There is just no pleasing some people. : )

  • 27 Faustino // Aug 29, 2008 at 14:41

My hunch is that Skeljbred and Zayatte are the two ‘close to signing’ players and that there is two/three other possibilities we stand a good chance of getting.

  • 28 Ken Boon loves the Toon // Aug 29, 2008 at 14:41

All this is Ashleys doing, KK is just trying to keep us happy by saying this. By the deadline i’ll put money on the fact these so called transfers will have broken down!! We are blinded by our own enthusiasm and hope to see that we have had our signings for the summer, No WOW signing either

  • 39 Aaron // Aug 29, 2008 at 14:46

“But we are in a great position at this club because we have not got any deadwood ”

LOL- not Ameobi and Smith then??

Other than that, wow, pretty candid and optimistic. We tend to fluctuate between highs and lows, and despite the initial shock of Milner going you have to say that the price is a good one. Sure Milner played his socks off against Coventry, but I personally don’t remember him bossing a Premier League game like that. Record number of U21 caps to me signifies some ability but the fact that no senior appearances have followed tells a story.

Still, he was a good lad let’s be honest, and did more than many at the Toon in his time here.
Good luck to him at Villa, and bring on the re-inforcements. To say we have two quite close to completion is a shock, and we must be very advanced for Keegan to admit as much- though of course we know Zayette is training with us so is one of the two.

Is there any more to the rumour that we are in discussions for Xabi Alonso?

  • 40 zogs // Aug 29, 2008 at 14:46

i would be a lot more upset if zogs went instead of milner, zogs can beat his man and can put in a good cross.Hope he gets his chance on left mid now

I SWEAR SOME ON HERE HATE TO BE UPBEAT KK IS A NUFC FAN LIKE US HE WOULD NOT DAMAGE OUR CLUB

  • 42 Geordie Joe // Aug 29, 2008 at 14:47

To be fair I think a lot of people on here are incredibly nieve. Running a football club is such a complex thing and anyone who pretends they know better than Ashley, Keegan or the rest of the board is completely deluded. There’s always a method behind the madness. I’m pretty sure that MA wouldn’t deliberately want to sabotage our club and subsequently reduce his assets.
Gettin players in and keeping other here is not the same as playing a game of footy manager.
We must trust in what Keegan and the board are doing for the club and not be so quick to make accusations.
Milner going is not the end of the world. He’s a steady eddie. Always gives his all but lacks that flair needed to really succeed and become a top, top player. As long as we get a few in before the transfer window, which I’m sure MA & Co are working there knackers off to do, then I’m sure we’ll be alright.
    Keep the faith
    JOE

  • 51 pit yaka // Aug 29, 2008 at 14:50

I indicated that a few days ago but unfortunately you failed to publish my post. KK is shrewd and will let the owners be in the spotlight. But you can look at what was said on sky sports 2 ways. Of course the chip shop papers wanted to say Ashley was to blame. On the other hand did KK NOT sell Andy Cole to a rival and then bring in Shearer!!! Everyone spat the dummy at the time before Shearer arrived. Thats KK. On Tues night he bigged up Milner big time, a great lad, a great trainer, 30+ U21 caps, yes but HE NEEDS to STEP up to the NEXT LEVEL. A sign that he is not good enough for KK. So big him up, look sore about loosing him, put him in the shop window then sit back and take £10m. Great business by Special K. He’s no mug. Why would he want a youngster that gives 110% but lacks the end product and also doesnt have the heart for the long journey. Get rid! Milner has practically kissed his future good bye!

  • 52 Piers // Aug 29, 2008 at 14:51

  • 56 Martin // Aug 29, 2008 at 14:52

Zayatte is practically signed - he’s training with us; which indicates his club are willing to let him go, and Keegan seems possitive - nout to stop us now…

That free’s up Zog for left mid and Guttierez on the right…they both like cutting back inside which means we can continue to allow them to switch sides throughout the match!

If Skeljbred does sign for us then we’ll have an abundance of midfield talent and I’d fully expect to see another attacker being named in those ‘3 hot irons’ …

If we pulled off those 2, Derdiyok and/or Inler - this transfer window will have been our most successful in 10 years!

Why does everyone keep saying Shearer replaced Cole?

Sir Les Ferdinand was brought in first! Played a season alongside Beardsley and THEN we bought Shearer.

  • 60 Mr. Shearer // Aug 29, 2008 at 14:54

    Ed,

This blog is becoming a joke. One minute you are demanding answers from Ashley and claiming that the board is diveded and Keegan has no say in anything, and as soon as the club actually give an official statement, you change your tune.

As fans, we should wait to hear from the OFFICIAL sources in regards to transfers and contracts, there is no point in getting stressed when trusting rumours, which in essense, is what all of this is.

Keep the faith, Kevin is not stupid, we have 4 great signings already. Yes we have a small squad, but its quality, and as we all know, its quality, not quantity.

Are you having a laugh? Villa got Joe Cole and Beckham? It is a great deal 12 millions for Milner(!?) cmon he can`t cross and if he is a winger than Ameobi is as good as C.Ronaldo at the peak. I have a feeling that if you are from England than you are good enough for O` Neil, because - Young, Shorey, Sidwell those are not player with whom you can fight for Europe.

ToonFaith - Everton signed a free on a one year contract and crocked Man U reject Saha, Everton clearly desperate, any club can sign 3 players, but quality? i dont think so.

Would I be negative if our summer shopping was done? Weeks ago Kev couldnt bear milner leaving, id be happier than anyone if we go these “anonymous dream signings” in, but i dont see it happening, im a realist, not a pessimist.

Miner is not that good and we’ve got 10 million for him. I agree with the post above Keegan did the right thing to get the best price really, would have kept him, could let him go- says it all. We’ve got a squad of 23 senior players, not including Ameiobi. Mourinho and Scolari say they like squads of 25-26. We need 2-4 players, plus with a few youth players getting a shout as we get into the season- which we should if we are serious about investing in and giving a chance to youth.

Guys, Jonas is naturally a right sided player, not sure where all this stuff about him being a lefty are coming from. He is a very two footed player though.

  • 98 bailey // Aug 29, 2008 at 15:14

Yes NUFC have let us down many times BUT KK HAS NOT.
I dont class his walking away as letting us down because there were far bigger issues involved in his decision.

  • 99 Spyro // Aug 29, 2008 at 15:14

  • 100 StuartM001 // Aug 29, 2008 at 15:15

I am sure Ed and many others on hear are acutally bi-polar. Why go nuts at every bid of good news, and dive into a pit of dispair when you get a hint at bad news. It’s like reading the ramablings of mad-men, a few aside.

Anyway. Wait till Tuesday and try and stay calm.

  • 102 DH7 Mags // Aug 29, 2008 at 15:20

zayette is a rb mainly. no left back. atouba is that ex spurs player who had his one outstanding game…..yep against newcastle….they always do. i would not even go anywhere near him. worse than what we have. sign baines instead for left back if any left back.

  • 103 beyethegreat // Aug 29, 2008 at 15:22

  • 104 hot ice // Aug 29, 2008 at 15:23

    atouba canny good,

he skins all the forwards outside his box when he is the last defender- thats a bit scary though!

  • 105 neeraj // Aug 29, 2008 at 15:24

we dont need a strong left back we need one that can push enrique

  • 106 Graham // Aug 29, 2008 at 15:24

What a difference a press conference makes. Some people on here are more fickle than a fickle thing on fickle day riding a fickle float!

Milner would not have been sold unless there is somehting to replace him with. Maybe not directly as we have Jonas and even Duff available on the right wing.

However, that money will be far better spent in the next couple of days and has prob been lined up for the last week or 2. The only reason NUFC would have gone public on his transfer request is if and when they had someone lined up.

3 players in by Monday. Zayatte and 2 established attack minded players for me. And for some reason, I wouldn’t rule out a “biggy” - it may not happen, just dont rule it out

We sold Milner because KK and co didnt think he was worth an improved contract and that 10 million was to good to turn

  • 112 ToonFaith // Aug 29, 2008 at 15:29

Saffarman- not having a go, honest, but KK has said, he’s not rushing coz he want quality not quantity. I don’t want to do an Everton and panic buy but they got 3 players in 2 days, and it seems some fans just want quantity.

But we all just have to have faith, toon faith, hence the name ;)

  • 113 MAG PIE // Aug 29, 2008 at 15:30

Zayate’s agent is Willie Mackay of Boumsong, Amdy Faye and Barton fame - and on that basis alone I don’t want him. Crap and we’re stuck with him. Good and he’ll want away.

Atouba is a pile of pap.

I love KK but when he says “there’s no deadwood at this club” he makes himself look ridiculous - after all everyone knows we’ve been trying to offload Shola.

I doubt the next 4 signings will be up to the standard of the first 4 - hope I’m proved wrong.

  • 114 iain // Aug 29, 2008 at 15:30

wish list - zhirkov/arda/lucho/arshavin or berbatov

realistic list - mattock or warnock/larsson/skejlbred/derdiyok

    F**K SAKE WISE UP..
KK says he’s happy .. you should be happy as hes the best manager we’ve had and he loves the club .. by the sounds of things from KK MA loves the club as much as us,
so they’ve sold Milner because he asked for a transfer.. so what 10mill is excellent business .. we went public when we knew our asking price was met and when we had players lined up ..

Now relax and see the players who are coming in .. theres definitely a quality striker and Milner is being replaced by Arda .. who next .. well Keegans got them selected so can’t wait to see ..

Now get behind MA and the team for sat. and see whats in store .. I’ve a feeling we can take the game to Arsenal this weekend .. Zogs on the left and Gutierrez on the right .. with Mickey O up front … this is gonna be some game… can’t wait for that..

  • 156 O'Hurley // Aug 29, 2008 at 19:33

First off, I just want everybody to know that the Mags have some dedicated fans across the Pond. I’m actually in Nashville. Anyway- I’ve been religious about keeping up with all the facts and rumors regarding this season’s transfers. I think that the 9-10mil we got from Milner MUST be chalked up as GREAT business. If there’s one thing we Yanks know, it’s how to do business, and that’s one helluva return on investment. Let’s be honest- James gave 1000% every game no matter what. He was CLASS. Hands down. The fact remains that he struggled with a few things on the field, i.e. effectively crossing the ball for MO and Oba. I think we can invest his transfer fee into some much better talent that will wear the shirt with pride (just look at Jonas). I love that we actually dare to dream that Berbatov might come to the Toon. I, personally, don’t believe that Newcastle was ever his “favorite” team, but hey, who the hell knows? One thing is for sure- money is a great motivator and if MA can dish it out a bit, Newcastle just might BECOME his favorite team. I’ll be the blue guy in the corner holding my breath… realistically though, KK is probably the best sports manager alive and if anyone can spot talent, it’s him. I’ll be over here across the pond hoping and praying, but definitely NOT losing the faith. Ho’way the lads!!

  • 158 Neville Brewis // Aug 29, 2008 at 19:49

Hi Neville here, what a turn up 8 million pounds extra for young milner, 2 years later. I like his work ethic, but I feel the British market has gone mad. Barry worth 4 million also 2 years ago, Robbie Keane 6 million last year could have got him. Almost 50 million it would cost to buy the 3 now!
No wonder young Kevin has cast his net in foreign waters.

  • 159 ToonRich // Aug 29, 2008 at 20:18

  • 160 jettson // Aug 29, 2008 at 20:45

KK did sound upbeat, we have to trust what he says, he has never let ud sown, 4 or 5 irons in the fire eh?? wow 4 starters, typical of this years transfer policy no one has a clue who - so the gossip stirs, wouldnt it be great to be watching Arda / Arshavin / Huntellaar etc against Hull City? WOW each of them, with a couple of unknown of the same quality as jonas and we will all be very happy mags!!cmon the toon!!

  • 161 daiv // Aug 29, 2008 at 22:03

I have the utmost repect for KK but can anyone believe a word he says?
A few months ago it was we need proven premier league players so we have bought two foreigners and Guthrie.
last week it was I cannot let anyone else leave and the last person I would let go is Milner. Say no more!!!
Today there is no dead wood in the team??? Smith and Ameobi?
He talks with forked tongue but it keeps the fans up beat and He gave me my happiest memories so he can do no wrong.
MA is a wrongun just like Shepherd. It was OK to slag off Shepherd and not be disloyal but you cannot slag off MA without being called a traitor to NUFC. I will always love the club. My opinion about owners who will come and go is a personal one. Criticism of the owner is not criticism of the club

  • 162 daiv // Aug 29, 2008 at 22:07

And its OK to criticise players who are totally useless.
    SMITH on 60K a WEEK.
No wonder Milner felt cheesed off on half Smith’s wages and the club would not accommodate him. If we would not pay him the wages what we should have done was get rid of SMITH and BARTON on double his wages and then he could not have a grievance. KKs mistake is to keep Smith and Barton and now he has lost Milner, the one player he alleges he wanted to keep!!!

  • 163 Rae // Aug 30, 2008 at 0:10

What WOW signing? Show me a quote from Ashley saying this, it is a rumour started by fans that has been blown out or proportion, there will be know WOW signing, i would rather we brought in 4 players of the same quality as we already have done. And as for Milner, 2goals and 2 assists last season says it all, not good enough, Villa have been robbed.

  • 164 Sav // Aug 30, 2008 at 4:05

So long as KK is happy to see Milner go and he is the one making the decisions, its ok by me, though I’m a big fan of the kid. But Keegan himself is our biggest asset.
This episode proves Keegan is still ‘the man from Del Monte’ and what he says, goes.

He obviously has a finite sum of money from Ashley to buy players and he;s just added to that with the Milner transfer. Its up to KK how he’s going to spend that, on Wise’s suggestions. These won’t include one moody Bulgarian, I’m sure.
As far as Milner’s departure goes, a consolation is remembering that when Geremi came on against Bolton, even though he is slow and unexciting to watch, he put in at least one quality pass for Owen to score. You can huff and puff all day but if you can’t deliver that, you are just wasting time and energy.
I still think Milner will get there because he works so hard at his game, but it seems KK reckons he can move us forward quicker with new players. Perhaps we’ll buy him back in a couple of years when we are in the Champions’ League!
