Reports Newcastle Offer Owen One Year Reduced Contract

August 29th, 2008 · 47 Comments

The Newcastle Evening Chronicle is reporting today that Newcastle United have offered Michael Owen a one-year extension to his contract at about £85K a week.

Michael Owen - unlikely to accept reduced offer

It will be dubious if this is acceptable to Michael Owen and his advisors, since it’s nowhere near the deal he was on at Newcastle previously.

The proverbial source close to the club told the Chronicle today:

“Newcastle want to keep Michael Owen, but they are only prepared to offer him another year after his contract runs out at the end of this season.”

Newcastle would not discuss this news and Michael Owen’s people also did not want to discuss something, which right now, after all, is just rumor, let’s be honest.

We’ve lost James Milner today to Aston Villa and this news will probably not come as good news to the Newcastle fans, yet both players have been so professional in the way they have gone about their business at Newcastle, and have been model professionals.

We’re sorry to have to bring this up, but this contrasts with another player on our books, who presumably has the backing of Ashley.

Ashley has reportedly backed down to Kevin Keegan on the Joey Barton affair, but as far as we know, the owner didn’t back down with Milner,

We’re not sure we are hearing the exact truth about what went on – becasue this looks so bad, but it would be nice to get some clarification from the club.

If we had to hazard a guess we don’t think Michael will accept this offer, as he could now get much better offers from other clubs in England.

Comments welcome.

rubbish load of nonnsence edd plz stop being negative toward nufc

  • 3 Michael // Aug 29, 2008 at 14:01

What a load of rubbish. There is no way we would only offer him a one year extension because then we’d have the exact same problem next year.

Was this story by Anal oliver by any chance?

  • 4 kenny g // Aug 29, 2008 at 14:03

keagan has since said that it was his decision to sell Milner, and that he has 4/5 irons in the fire. 3 of which he is dealing with himself.

Links defender Thimothee Atouba from football Bundesliga Hamburger SV is to radio reports before a move to English Premier League club Newcastle United. The broadcaster reported the NDR 90.3 on Friday afternoon. The National players from Cameroon was in 2005 by Tottenham Hotspur to Hamburg and had changed in 76 Bundesliga matches a goal.

The Spurs Atouba was under coach Martin Jol was unhappy. The Dutchman has since the beginning of the new season when Coach HSV. Only two days ago, the National Hamburger Marcel Jansen players from FC Bayern Munich committed to the defense on the left side will be used. Atouba was in the past also repeatedly struck by Undiszipliniertheiten

this is a joke, first we lost Milner, now we are going to loose Owen too?!?! what a hell, now Atouba and some Zayattea is coming ?!? we are a joke, newcastle, prepare for Championship

  • 7 James // Aug 29, 2008 at 14:06

This is a NONSENSE story because KK confirmed in his interview today that they NEVER DISCUSSED CONTRACTS during the meeting on Weds. He said they only talked about new signings.

So this article by Anal Oliver is *************

  • 8 Micky Toon // Aug 29, 2008 at 14:07

Is Ed still writing this blog himself? Since the NOTW connection these stories have been very anti-nufc. In fact the whole blog is very anti-NUFC at the moment.

It’s in the Chronicle so it’s bollox.

MA didn’t back down on selling Milner because he didn’t have to. Keegan wanted rid of him.

If, IF, it is true, about Owen, then it will have been Keegan who came up with the offer and Keegan will be happy with it. If the Milner sale has taught people anything it’s that Keegan IS running 1st team affairs and the rest of the club back him up.
Remember Ashley is the Owner not the Chairman

  • 9 Geordie billums // Aug 29, 2008 at 14:10

    Lads,

KK has come out and said it is was his decision to sell him. He has also said that he basically has a few transfers is place.

We have to be more positive and stop putting our selves down.

The squad is too small at the moment but KK sounded upbeat so he must have a few good things up his sleave. Ashley has bought well and we cant complain with that. Look at Spurs, they have thrown cash around and are still on nil points………………………..

Lets get behind the team and get a result against Arsenal. We can then for sure look forward to a good season.

your not helping this club edd your doing the opposite!!!!

  • 11 Luke // Aug 29, 2008 at 14:13

Atouba? you’ve got to be joking…

  • 12 ObaFan2 // Aug 29, 2008 at 14:16

Rubbish, Owen would rather go elsewhere imo than take a wage reduction like that.

    Gutter press at it again.

  • 13 jmc // Aug 29, 2008 at 14:16

With regards to the milner saga, im glad its all gone through, there is no way he would have been sold at this late stage if kev wasn’t going to replace him and add to the squad in the last few days we have left of the transfer window.

I say, watch this space, there may be one or two surprises lurking around the corner !?!?!?!

  • 14 ELFER // Aug 29, 2008 at 14:17

now go to nufc.co.uk and read it by yourself! KK is happy with the deal of milner and there are some exciting signings lined up!

Ones again, don’t paint the wall black always too soon!!

  • 15 Kash // Aug 29, 2008 at 14:19

4 or 5 potential players coming through the doors. That suggest to me that a LB, CB, CM, AM, ST are being chased!!!

  • 16 Ian // Aug 29, 2008 at 14:20

I keep saying it, but if they arent worried at all about the Owen contract and they dont seem to be, they must have a hell of a good striker lined up.

I still think to not sign Owen and not bother with Cisse there must be someone coming.

I just cannot stand last minute deals, always there is something not brilliant about them, usually a get out clause in the contract.

  • 17 t-g-w // Aug 29, 2008 at 14:24

IF this story is true I think it’s only fair Owen should take a pay cut - on the condition that his contract is revised after this season.

Say to Owen that he hasn’t featured that much in 3 years at the club but has picked up a massive wage. Not to mention that we paid a large transfer fee and lots of money so he could see the best specialists in the worl d about his injuries. If he performs well this season and plays a number of games, then give him an improved contract next year.

Seems sensible to me, and I think Owen would agree with that hiself even though he wouldn’t be pleased about it.

  • 18 ToonKing // Aug 29, 2008 at 14:25

bollox, we’ll give Oewn at least a 4 year deal.

  • 19 john // Aug 29, 2008 at 14:26

this is a load of sh#it, im getting sick of it ashley grab you nuts and support the manager you put in place, you dont know about football if you dont have a trick up your sleeve, your in trouble the fans will turn on you not kevin! this is not a regular business its not going to be profitable on a weekly basis. sort it out or the fans might not welcome you even if you do try and buy them a few pints.same cycle being a toon fan, huge expectation then follows optomism then follows dissapointment, im not content with mid table either its about time we broke out of that and became a real force. This is a GREAT club and can be great with people like kevin at the club, i understand all supports get frustrated but i think us toon fans get alot more than we deserve. It a nutshell Ashley if your here to take us forward do it and now! if your not F### OFF

Calm down mate…check the link above :-)

  • 23 Ian // Aug 29, 2008 at 14:37

Looking back I think KK has got the better of Owen.

Owen always wants everything his way, KK no matter how good Martins has been has always said Owen is one of the best in the world, part of his plans and so on, Owen delayed the contract then newcastle didnt seem bothered and let it linger, just when Owen thinks he has the club over a barrel he gets offered a one year deal which the club will know he wont take.

There may be two strikers on their way to us and one at least of them must be very good, Owen will have to consider making a very cheap long deal, the short deal or he may be sold/allowed to go.

The meeting was probably to make sure the two strikers are in the bag before hacking Owen off.

KK is very ruthless he has shown that in the past with Cole etc.

That is what I am thinking now, I thought it was Owen but now I think it is KK.

Sack Smith, balls to what we would get for him (£2m possibly£3m) and use his wages to pay for Owen.If Smith is worth £60k then Owen is worth at least what hes getting now.

where does atouba fit in that category hes utterly rubbish

  • 30 Angryman the Angry Fan // Aug 29, 2008 at 15:07

People on here are blaming ED for something he is reporting on as written in a newspaper….

He didnt actually make this posting up, he is just reporting on what is said in the local rag.

GET OFF HIS CASE OR GET OFF HIS BLOG!!!

So Milner, as predicted has now GONE, CASHLEYS NETT SPEND PLEASE ANYONE?

We look like we are potentially gonna sign atouba (Spud reject) and zanyata mondata (or words to that effect?? They will cost no more than 5m, so if he thinks the sale of Milner to sign 2 average players will placate the fans, well……..

It will only placate the CASHLEY fans on here, who thinks the sun shines out of his tight arse!!!

Can somebody point me those clubs that 1) can&will offer Owen a contract that he wants 2) offer him first team place 3)is showing anykind of intrest

ManUre-no chance, he cannot make it to the starting 11 (especially if thay buy Berbatov)

    Chelski-hmm, no way

Arsenal- A possible candidate, but their salarysystem is equal to ours.

Liverpool-he would probably take the cut in wages but Rafa has made it clear he doesn’t want him

Everton-Please, they couldn’t even pay Duffs salary

ManC-Maybe the only potential candidate, and thay just bought a brazilian for 20mil + they have Bojinov, Sturridge and the bloke they bought last jan from Pompey

If Owen really has potential suitors can somebody point them to me?

If true, I think it’s great we are sending out a message. We have neen mugged for transfer fees and obscene wages for far too long enough.

Just look at the outlay on Owen, Viduka, Duff alone, when they can barely put 2 games together.

I’m 100% for PERFORMANCE RELATED PAYMENTS

  • 37 SAMTHECAT // Aug 29, 2008 at 15:28

1 year-what would be the point of that unless Owen himself only wants a year to see how things are progressing.
If KK wanted to sell Milner he would have done so in July, this is clearly a matter of principle from Ashley i.e we do not re negotiate contracts after 12 months.

  • 38 shaz // Aug 29, 2008 at 15:36

who cares.looking good for him leave.let’s see Rafa turn him down on a bosman.owen miles better than Keane.

  • 39 Canada44 // Aug 29, 2008 at 15:41

Please Michael, find a really football club!!!

  • 40 Ross // Aug 29, 2008 at 16:01

if atouba and zayatte are the quality names we’re bringing in before monday, the two “irons in the fire” who are “quite far down the line” as far as progress of transfers go…its still a little disappointing?

  • 41 lesh // Aug 29, 2008 at 16:34

May I speculate? Look at Kevin’s performance over the news that Milner wanted to go (published on the NUFC site remember) … not a happy bunny was he? Maybe his demeanour jacked the price up a bit? Now he’s said he sanctioned the move….

Earlier protestations about wanting to keep David Owen, which I’m sure he’d love to do, news appears of a one year offer with a pay-cut.

That news in turn tickles the market a bit….. stimulates potential buyers, better offer than a free in the summer…. KK’s got a ready made up his sleeve…… (the WOW signing?).

Conspiricy theorist, me? Just thinkin out loud and before anybody says so, TRIPE!

  • 42 Petey // Aug 29, 2008 at 18:28

the things id do for for 85k a week rofl….

if owen doesnt accept this, then he is just a whining little ….erm….rude word

  • 43 Toon Graeme // Aug 29, 2008 at 19:12

This story is a load of bollox written by a half wit hack or a reporter.

Who do we beleive Anal or KK!!

STOP GETTING AT ED - this is news about newcastle and therefore should be posted.

If you dont like it - get off the site!!!!!

  • 44 Toon Graeme // Aug 29, 2008 at 19:14

Sorry just had to add - read that sunderland link - f**k off - what a load of shit!

  • 45 Reb // Aug 29, 2008 at 20:14

lesh — who the heck is “David Owen”? And why should anyone want to keep him?

As for the Owen thing, one year makes no sense. Unless the club just want to sell him in January with more than 5 months on his contract. But this is from Oliver so I think it’s just bollox.

  • 46 Petey // Aug 29, 2008 at 20:28

    rofl, i noticed that…

cant beleive u dont know david owen reb!, he scored like 53 goals in one season last year for superb united.

unless he meant this david owen

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Owen

or im just being rude and i havent caught on to something clever. if that so, i apolagize

  • 47 Sav // Aug 30, 2008 at 4:25

As macnoble says, who else will pay more than we are reputed to be offering?
Owen could probably be bought right now for about 8 million. For a proven goalscorer and a good pro.
But Hollywood wages and doubts about his pace and whether his knees will stand up to a full season are putting suitors off.

That is assuming the Chronicle story is true at all. After a busy day at the Toon when we all found out we don’t know anything like as much as we thought we did, perhaps we should just cool off and wait for the truth to emerge?

….And enjoy today’s game and see if we are any better than last year.
