Mirror Reporting Milner Taking Medical At Aston Villa

August 29th, 2008 · 84 Comments

The Daily Mirror is reporting that Newcastle’s 22 year-old winger James Milner is currently having a medical at Aston Villa.

James Milner - now taking medical at Villa?

The permanent transfer of the player, for a reported ?9M (the amount keeps changing) should be completed in the next few hours.

And it wouldn’t surprise us if Milner is in the Aston Villa side for Sunday’s home game against Liverpool.

The Daily Mirror is reporting that Newcastle have accepted Aston Villa’s bid for the England U-21 star, rumored to be in the region of £9M, and with the player obviously wanting to leave Tyneside , the deal will be tied up very shortly.

This has all happened so quickly and again we cannot help but Keegan himself will be stunned by this.

After Newcastle great win on Tuesday night, in which Milner was the MOM, who would have thought he’d be leaving Newcastle 3 days later. :(

We wouldn’t.

Martin O’Neil must think Christmas has come early this year.
Comments welcome.

I doubt the 9m figure is correct, I think it will be closer to 12m, as Ashley will want 10m, and the rest goes to Leeds.

  • 2 seetow // Aug 29, 2008 at 10:08

i wouldn’t be so sure about how martin o’neill thinks christmas has come early. milner is distinctly average, can’t cross, painfully slow (though faster than geremi).. TAXI!

  • 3 WesToon // Aug 29, 2008 at 10:10

    Yea P#ss off James,you plonker
Least he could do was remain loyal, after being a regular in the first team!! They dont make players like they used to…EXCEPT there are a few (ie) SPIDEY..thing of beauty that Lad is :-)

  • 4 Ericles // Aug 29, 2008 at 10:11

I hope Milner is also seeing a psychiatrist at this medical at Villa. He must be potty to want to leave NUFC and KK’s vision for a team nowhere as potentially big as ours. The only reason can be money, money, money. The implication? If it is for more than NUFC offered him the question is obvious. How did he know Villa were offering more? Or would do? This situation stinks and it is nothing to do with KK or NUFC.

  • 5 Grantosuk // Aug 29, 2008 at 10:11

Let him go, full of heart but not much end product.

Jonas is twice the player, and actually wants to play for us.

Hopefully the money will be spent on a creative midfielder that we DESPERATLY need.

  • 6 domtoon // Aug 29, 2008 at 10:12

Don’t know why some people dislike Milner so much - personally I think he’s quality! Could think of other people in the team I’d much rather sell………

  • 7 toonfan101 // Aug 29, 2008 at 10:12

    I think 9m is 3m more than he’s worth.

  • 8 Micky Toon // Aug 29, 2008 at 10:12

Why would Keegan be stunned? Milner handed in a request nine days ago. Keegan has had plenty of time to take it in. He knows MON loves Milner and that MON was at the cov game, so it was always on the cards.
If we could keep everyone fit then we would be top six no problem, so stop moaning about a journeyman player leaving for good money.

  • 9 jettson // Aug 29, 2008 at 10:13

lets hope we have something up our sleeve and a replacement (with better end product) is lined up, Turan maybe??? he still available remmber!! clearly in need of a minimum 3 players 2 of which have to be first choice players, desperate for creativity from midfield, so Turan, and possibly Huntellaar anyone??? no champions league for him with Ajax, and none of the big guns have come in 4 him so why not go 4 it, MA this would be the WOW signing, make it happen and now!!

  • 10 domtoon // Aug 29, 2008 at 10:14

Although yes having thought about it if he wants to leave then her can go do one. Simple to be honest.

  • 11 shiggy // Aug 29, 2008 at 10:16

trust me this is a true story from a very reliable source.

Kevin Keegan had a meeting with Derek Llambias around an hour after the Coventry match and pre post match interviews, when he gave a glowing report on James Milner on the team. He appeared very upbeat.

After around an hour or so and the meeting with Llambias he was absolutely foaming and gave the impression to the source that there would be NO further signings or someone was moved on! He was supposedly livided!.

I also hear Bobby Moncur has give some comments regarding Dennis Wise, and the fact no one likes the fella’ players included and KK feeling extremely underminded by him.

I would expect one more signing and James Milner to move on.

  • 12 The Entertainers // Aug 29, 2008 at 10:17

I see we have been liked with making a bit for Leicester Cities young LB Joe Mattock.

His club is wanting 5 million, but he is worth a look and is the sort of player who would fit into the clubs transfer policy.

  • 14 Rackham // Aug 29, 2008 at 10:18

Bull, Milner is a great player, We all loved him, They say its becuse of the wages, if the lad dont want to play for us then why keep him, look at the ronaldo saga at manchester united and how many fans hees lost? because now if milner stays their will be a a mixed reception and theirfore may dint his confidence? or maybe inspire him to prover himself?

  • 15 The real big AL // Aug 29, 2008 at 10:19

Let the greedy t**t go. Jonas is right footed put him on right and zog on left. both beat players and have an end product (not on corners tho zog)! money can be better used to strengthen other areas.

  • 16 The Entertainers // Aug 29, 2008 at 10:19

Everton sign Saha……..no move for Smith then

  • 17 liquid ice // Aug 29, 2008 at 10:20

we should buy the whole argentina squad (would be good)

anyway nt arsed bout milner although he was a good footyplayer to be a winger you need to be able to run fast and thats one thing milner couldnt do so if we get 10mil from him means we could buy an argentinian attaking midfielder.

also nzogbia is twice the player milner will ever be

jonas on the right nzogbia on the left unbeatable!!

  • 18 SteveM // Aug 29, 2008 at 10:20

Another made up story - I’m sure if Milner does go to Villa he will have a medical - so why not publish now for an exclusive. If Milner was at the Villa training ground being seen by the Villa medical staff I’m sure EVERY Paper would have pictures and the story. This is just one more example of the media making stuff up to sell papers rather than reporting the facts. BTW I can confirm Milner is in the late stages of contract negotiations with MoN - just made it up - sorces close to the Villa camp have confirmed that MoN is positive about signing a player of Milner’s quality. - This story is totally based on my imagination and has no basis in known fact whatsoever - can i get a well paid job in journalism please. The sourse close to the VIlla Camp is me - since my flat in newcastle is close on a global scale to journalism - and anyways you’ll never be able to prove me wrong unless I confess… damn!! knew I should’ve just stuck to the lies (correction: facts)

  • 19 Tom // Aug 29, 2008 at 10:21

Man people are quick to turn on a player. Considering he’s worth a £9-12m fee shouldn’t he be on wages that represent a player that costs that much. Milners one of the lowest paid first team regulars. Im dissapointed that he handed in a transfer request to force Ashleys hand, as yes he’s been very badly advised. But The board should have seen that coming and done something to rectify it. Losing Milner a player who will be fit all season and will give 100% home and away is not a step forward unless we replace him with absolute class. Jonas will take up the right wing slot and Charlie the LW, but if either get injured we’re now left with geremi.

We have 3 days to replace him and add the further 3 players keegan says is essential to compete this season, it must be done immediatly and it must be players keegan wants.

  • 20 Dave Thomson // Aug 29, 2008 at 10:22

millner is a traitor and the greedy little git wants more than 30k a week i will play for the toon for nowt me like

  • 21 Spyro // Aug 29, 2008 at 10:22

Some people on here have no sense.

Milner handed in a transfer request in 9days ago weren’t it? KK will not be shocked and was just talking up his value as he must have known O’neill had representatives in the coventry game crowd.

This also means that we either have a replacement lined up, or a number of potential replacements ready to be pursued once the deal has gone through.

  • 22 Paul Wright // Aug 29, 2008 at 10:23

Serious is milner worth 9/10million? I say NO WAY. He plays his heart out but his crossing and pace is questionable at best and I dont think he woudl get into a startign newcastle midfield as Jonas is a mile sbetter right winger!!! Shame to se ehim go but I cant see vill afans being that happy with spendign 10million on a player with no enlgnad caps and not even close to breakign into the england squad!!!! 2 assists last seaosn in 30+ games tells its own story!!!

  • 23 Chris_toon // Aug 29, 2008 at 10:24

After hearin that he signed a new contract just last year i got MILNER on my shirt now he gonna go i just as well throw it away :( not happy i tells ya - GIT!!!!

  • 24 The Entertainers // Aug 29, 2008 at 10:25

Hope so Spyro, but why dont we have the replacement lined up first (signed, sealed and delievered) before we sell Milner?

  • 25 arnietoon // Aug 29, 2008 at 10:25

    NEW TOPIC

If Berbatoff is such an NUFC/Keegan fan, how about scuppering Fergusons antics by offering a “’till christmas” loan of Berbatoff.

Gives a bit of breathing space. Solves a lot of problems.

  • 26 ELFER // Aug 29, 2008 at 10:26

Saying it again, we haven’t lost a worldclass player in milner, so why are you all so down? Good business!!

If he get’s injured (just like bellamy, dyer, etc.) we all will have a lough and enjoy the extra millions we have got for him!

Now bring in Arshavin or some similar cracker!

  • 27 Tom // Aug 29, 2008 at 10:26

Yeah, I agree with Spyro, if they are willing to let him go now rather than holding it, they probably have someone lined up, hopefully Seb Larsson!!

  • 28 Toon Graeme // Aug 29, 2008 at 10:27

If this is the case then this raises a couple of things:

1: That is fast work only 48hrs later since it cme public he is off!

2: If we can sell so fast - why cant WE sign that fast!

3: There MUST be something in the pipeline!!

4: If there isnt and the above posts are true then from Tuesday at 00:00.01 am - there are going to be some really pissed off toon army.

I dont know about everyone else but I was under the impression from things I read (non papers) and heard from KK that we were going to be adding to our squad and so far it hasnt really happened has it.

Dont get me wrong - Bassong, Guthrie, Colo and Jonas have been good - but we all know we needed more.

GOD I pray that we are going to get a surprise over the next three/four days.

2 things will happen after Milner is sold..
We get a really decent striker and a decent play maker .. we all know plans are in place … the club are just waiting on confirmation of Milners price .. before confirming bids on the 2 players .. MA, KK etc aren’t stupid and if this was done behind KK’s back you’d hear a hell of alot more about it .. trust in the club and Manager .. wait 3 days before you decide if they’re messing us and KK around ..

  • 31 Canada44 // Aug 29, 2008 at 10:29

    bye bye milner!

There is a good player perhaps but certainly not a big player, so for me i prefer to see flo malouda not cause iam french but flo is better than milner and more technical and i think it’s important to have technical’s players like jonas, duff, charles, and hope flo.

I hope newcastle will closed transfer of flo and another player like skjelbred why not…and in my opinion another player for sustitute nicky butt (33 years!), and this player which i will like to see at st james is Rio Mavuba!
I like this player, english people don’t know him maybe but i can to say you he is strong with many cap with french team and he is very nice…

    We will see what’s happen

    Go newcastle and Go MO!!!!

  • 32 Spyro // Aug 29, 2008 at 10:29

exactly Entertainers, everyone would be much more relaxed about this if that were the case. Oh well, we are Newcastle UTD and it wouldn’t be right for us to do things in the most orthodox fashion would it? :D

  • 33 liquid ice // Aug 29, 2008 at 10:30

    jokin sorry lad

  • 34 The Entertainers // Aug 29, 2008 at 10:30

I know i’m being cynical but:

If we get 9 million for Milner, we in reality only get 7 million, there or there abouts.

We sign a replacement like Larsson who will cost app’ 6 million (saving only 1 million) and he will probabley want about 40 k p/w !!!

    Back to where we started…….

Like i say, i am being cynical and i’m all out of optimisim at the moment.

  • 35 Singapore Toon // Aug 29, 2008 at 10:32

I always wanted this to happen.. n finally Martin O’Neil Made my long-time wish came true..!
Milner is finally off the block for good and that is good gnews for NUFC!
He is average at BEST, painfully slow and cant cross for good measure!
More like a look down and just pump the freaking ball into the box type…
KK should and will use the money and buy a quality replacement..a lad that is 80% of Jonas will make us all smile!!
Injuries to charles or jonas will make us really shorthanded..
So KK MUST buy before the shopping windoe closes..

  • 36 Ericles // Aug 29, 2008 at 10:32

Local press hints at Larsson being available. Why not? Experienced squad player for the coming season. Get your boots on Terry Mac. Give Beresford a phone call. Milburn lives!!
I still have the faith - and even more now in KK after these last few weeks.

  • 37 sean667 // Aug 29, 2008 at 10:32

funny that he turned in a MOM performance the week he asked for amove and only TWO assists the season before……and yes i have turned on him ithought he played really well against coventry and feel a bit let dwn ,sad i know but true.
The squad is so small and we did not need teenage tantrums as well as all the other difficulties we av had. (yes i know he`s not a teenager; just spoilt)

  • 38 mark // Aug 29, 2008 at 10:33

what a shit article…pinched from the notorious bullshitters themselves - the Mirror. what a load of shat.. until Sky news etc report why even waste your time repeating the story…

Milner probably does deserve more money considering the likes of Joey (i cant apologize) Barton is on 40 - 60per week but he’s went about it the wrong way. I feel he wants to remain here and will probably be a little gutted that the Toon havent gave him the rise he demanded after handing in his transfer request. He could of waited another year or so..

Ne sentiment for footballers now-a-days, I thought he was one of the better ones around, but all footballers seem to be wan*ers..

  • 39 Jimmy Mac // Aug 29, 2008 at 10:34

I personally hope we can hold onto the lad, with him taylor gutherie, and young lads like nile ranger, tozer, carroll, lua lua coming through will have a good british element to our team for years to come.

I dont know how people can ever criticise Milners effort! he is the most hard working player in our team! he definalty isnt slow and his crossing/end product is just getting better and better.

Personally i hope he signs a new deal, however, if not i would want at least 12m for him!!

  • 40 clinta // Aug 29, 2008 at 10:35

This is a bit of a nightmare, A good sloid player, massive experience in the premier league, very young, the first pick for the under 21 england side by pearces own omissions, aand a player who likes playing for newcastle and didn’t want to leave.?????????

but now he’s been shown the door under our new policy and we’ll probably get someone untested in the pl, older and on the wage milner wanted coming in??!!!!

stupid move and some on here are happy lol!! KK must be gutted about this.

  • 41 Spyro // Aug 29, 2008 at 10:36

fair point Entertainers, i would prefer Larsson to Milner as he has constantly improved over the last few seasons…and he can cross! yayyyy :D . but there are better options IMO and our scouting team could surely find better for 7 or 8 million

  • 42 35yrsofhurt // Aug 29, 2008 at 10:36

For Gods sake will you lot stop crying in your beer.
Milner is no class act, Jonas is, simple as that and he was bought to play wide right.
Milner would not have settled for life on the bench.
Get over it and move on.
Have faith and cast your judgements after 12noon on Monday.
Fancy a fighting point 2morrow by the way.

  • 43 bowburnmag // Aug 29, 2008 at 10:37

Keegan will clearly not be shocked but he’ll potentially be spitting feathers about it. I look at it like this. There are few more dependable and readily-available players than Milner. He’s rarely injured and given the feeble fitness of the rest of the squad he’s one player we could end up missing more than most purely because he’s always there making up decent numbers. However, I agree there are players with more end product out there. If they come, will they have the same heart and desire? That’s debatable. I don’t blame the kid for wanting more money, given his current valuation. Taylor kicked up a fuss and got what he wants. Milner is on a fraction of the likes of Owen and should be well p*ssed off under the circumstances. But he did sign a contract agreeing to it not long ago. As someone has implied, a bit of paper will have been put in front of him, telling him what he could be on if he goes to x, y or z FC. The kid has been messed around by this club in the past and still knuckled down and did his graft and has been a pretty reliable outlet. It’s probably unfair to criticise him for wanting to go to a club with currently more potential being realised and being rewarded for it more fairly. And yet, like others, I admit this whole thing still gets up my nose.

  • 44 The Entertainers // Aug 29, 2008 at 10:38

I see the Times are now claiming Milner is having a medical at Villa.

Cardiff have turned down a multi million pound bid for Johnson and Ledley……..what a cracking signing they would be imo. Both 22 and very good players.

lads, ease up on milner his always given us 100%, but he thought he was worth more at his job (can you blame him?) it’s not about loyalty it’s about earning the same as a fellow staff member your as valuable as???? like in any job!!!

I can see anyone on here staying at a job if the pays not right -yeah yeah there all on good money?that’s not the point! is it. it’s about being fair.

good luck james, you’ll be a great success at villa park under Oneill and in the full england squad soon enough.

  • 47 Fergie // Aug 29, 2008 at 10:41

    mark:

is The Times reliable enough for you? as they are now reporting that he is having a medical after we accepted a bid which could rise to £12mil. Personally, I really rate Milner and will be sad to go, but 12 mil is a very good price for him, but only if it is properly reinvested in the team.

Quote “He must be potty to want to leave NUFC and KK’s vision for a team nowhere as potentially big as ours. ”

Ha, are you serious?!! You have a big turn out week in week out, that doesnt automatically result in potential! To have potential you need a manager and an owner/chairman/board on the same wavelength - pulling the club in the same direction. You lot have nothing of the sort - and to top it you’ve had to bring in Dennis Wise to sort your transfers out!
You are a big club - in terms of fans and ground - but everything else is a bit of a joke really! Especially when your owner comes out to moan about having to pay off transfer fees from previous deals (as if he didnt know the situation when he took the place on)!

Im sorry but Milner is doing the right thing - if you do have potential - with the current goings on - that potential will not be realised in mine, yours or James Milners life time!

It says something when they are rumoured to be sorting out a deal to pay Micky Owen £100k + a week (quality player but how many times a yr does he actually get to wear the shirt) and then offer a lad that puts everything in week in week out, a tiny percentage of that - poor show NUFC!

Give KK a chance or its another manager through those rotating doors of yours.

Looks like it’s going to be a hugely disappointing summer for us. Another going out and still no sign of a creative midfielder or striker. Other clubs who hadn’t improved are now making moves such as Everton and Man city and leaving us behind.

Hopefully we will make 5 new signings on monday and announce that Owen has signed a new contract. Can’t see it happening though.

  • 62 ToonFaith // Aug 29, 2008 at 11:01

More than £10m is GREAT business for us, especially fi we can get the likes of Seb Larsson, as he can play CM and RM if needed and has much more potential.
I can’t belive people are saying Milner deserves more money, so what if the contract he signed was made 2 years ago?!?! his agent would have read it, I’m sure the PFA didn’t have a problem with it and Milner himself would have read it and they all advised him to SIGN it, so whats changed in a year? a few extra games and hard work that hasn’t produced anything.
If he was offered a new contract after one year, whats to stop N’Zobia or Taylor or any other player who thinks they deserve more. Taylor was given a new contract because his was almost off, if Milner had stayed another season, he would have begun talks for a better deal. He’s only 21 and on £30k a week (some people don’t make that in a year!) and he has at least 12 years of his football career left to earn more.
So i say sell sell sell, we used to get critised for paying too high wages for overated players, not any more. Well done MA. Sorry for the rant, but you hust can’t please some fans. ahhhhhhhhhhh feel so much better ;)

I’d laugh if we pulled the plug at the last minute again… then sold him to the toffees just to spite that pikey twat O’neill

  • 65 holte_ender8 // Aug 29, 2008 at 11:06

    Ericles,

nice one mate, bigger than us… you lot have won f*** all compared to us

its a well known fact that this sh1tty return of King Kev is a solid dream of hope and no substance…

you play sh1t football and your in debt, last season’s 4-1 says it all mate… best of luck to Toon but as always its a season of nothing to look forward to… MUGS

We can only presume that they have as good a player or better lined up, Milner is a good player O’neill is no mug.

Best of luck to Milner, I liked him while he was here.

I wonder who we are selling next?

  • 69 Me123 // Aug 29, 2008 at 11:16

Ericles - Newcastle a bigger team than Villa? Dream on. Im the first to say NUFC have a great following but your statement is utter sh*te. I wouldn’t argue Villa are bigger because they arent - there aint a lot between the two teams (taking what Villa have won into account). JM handed a transfer request in ages ago if what we are led to believe is true. He was blatently Newcastles best player against Coventry so to be earning half as much as some of the others must be frustrating…

  • 70 Toon Graeme // Aug 29, 2008 at 11:19

I take it the vast majority hate milner. Bet you werent hating him on Tuesday!

Its never good when a player leaves, but I think you have to look at the big picture.

Who the hell knows what it is but Im sure there is one!

  • 71 clinta // Aug 29, 2008 at 11:20

sorry Sean fickle! can’t see us having a replcement lined up or lining one up in the next 3 days, how longs it taken us to do other business like???

    hope i’m well wrong though.

  • 72 Owen_10 // Aug 29, 2008 at 11:22

I don’t want breast enlargement surgery!

  • 73 HD // Aug 29, 2008 at 11:38

Doesn’t milner remind you guys of ameobi all them 5 years ago. constantly picked for the u21s, but always waiting for that step up in quality, which would lead to full england caps. Both players never look like having that quality to succeed at the highest level, the only difference is we’re getting £10m for the one and the other is still one the bench. Everyone is more than happy with his work rate and he gave 100% everytime he put on the shirt, but its just not enough. This is the same problem that we had with parker and bowyer. The signings so have have been excellent, the quality that we deserve, hopefully a couple more over the next 3 days will lead to a stable season.

  • 74 Macas // Aug 29, 2008 at 11:42

All those wanting Miner to be given a rough ride by our fans - does that mean you will all boo Given? I seem to remember he slapped in a transfer request because Harper once played a couple of games instead of him…

  • 75 neeraj // Aug 29, 2008 at 11:44

who says he was(is) our best player

he was the best player of a below average team…

still feel n’zog is better then milner, not true justice has been done to his talent…..
    2 assists and 1 goal in 29 games…………
geremi had 9 assists last season………..
    even martins had 8 assists

another over- rated player from football manager

    ppl talking abt smith leaving…….
think yourself as manager of a club, would u like to have a striker who doesnt like to shoot for goals…….. the answer is NO

all the everton chasing smith was rubbish…
moyes is no fool to spend 4 mill on smith…..

of course we should hold the transfer till we get a replacement for him good or no good its always good to have players around….

  • 76 Marty // Aug 29, 2008 at 11:49

ADIOS James,Piss off with that attitude.
He has played great lately n now is leaving when things are comin together……just go away!!!!!
CRAIG are you gonna be a Villa supporter now??? ;-)

  • 77 MagpieDan // Aug 29, 2008 at 11:50

stop bloody attention seeking, you unfunny twat

  • 78 macn0ble (Finland) // Aug 29, 2008 at 12:12

This is a good example of a greedy, disillusioned English player. No 1st team caps, not much of European cup experience, 22 years and still thinks he’s entitled to earn more then 30 k per week!!!

    Jesus!

10 mil from is more then we’re entitled from him, so get the money and run laughin’

(BTW, reminds me of goldfish, how about you guys?)

  • 79 nightfall // Aug 29, 2008 at 12:13

RM4 - that’s probably the reason why owen didn’t get a new contract…i think we’ll sell him…and i think it’s the right thing..don’t get me wrong…owen is class, but ‘cos of him getting 100k+ and other players who work twice as hard get only 30k…i mean..that’s just not fair…and good relations in the club/among the players will eventually broke ‘cos of this…milner’s one…who’s next?

  • 80 harumph // Aug 29, 2008 at 12:24

Macnoble… very true. Milner’s football drives me mad. Last season he saw more of the ball than anyone else- hence people’s admiration for his workrate, etc. he did NOWT with it however… her toiled, toiled, toiled…. get him the hell oot of toon! ZOG is twice the player… skill, pace and technical prowess…. him down the left - guti on the right… Arshavin with either Guthrie/ Geremi through the middle…. easy.

  • 81 Chilbottle Toon Nutta // Aug 29, 2008 at 12:45

Can’t believe we’ve done this. A consistently good highly skilful player who never gives less than 100% and we let him leave. We keep crap and let our best go. I think he will really star in a forward line like Villa have put together. Imagine if we had Ashley Young on one wing and Milner on the other. Larsson is a donkey in comparison

  • 82 TOONDALE // Aug 29, 2008 at 12:57

Milner is a typical English bustling wingman with very little end product. Head down and hope merchant- good riddance- spend the money on somebody who knows how to cross and find teamates.

  • 83 ERIC CRAMMY MAG // Aug 29, 2008 at 18:12

totally agree with most of the comments ,i personelly cant believe we are getting 12 million for james milner at these prices we might get a grand for ameobi or is that pushing it a bit the lad had a great engine very little end product though

  • 84 barry // Aug 29, 2008 at 19:11

Fine signing. At least he had the balls to hand a transfer request in. Unlike a certain Villa player, I assume that cost him alot of dough…
