Martin O’Neil is reported ready to increase his previous £10M bid for James Milner after Everton bid £10M themselves for Milner’s services yesterday.
James Milner - on his way?
Reports say that Villa are ready to offer £12M for James, and that’s a lot more than Martin O’Neil had to pay a couple of years ago, when he thought he had tied the youngster up for just £4M, only for Newcastle to pull the plug at the last possible moment.
And £12M will no doubt be too much for the Tyneside club to turn down, because that’s good business for James.
There’s a saying what goes around comes around, and maybe that terrible treatment of young Milner by the Newcastle club two years ago, when James was only 20 years old, has finally had its consequences.
No doubt Newcastle will get a very good deal for Milner, and if that’s what the hierarchy wants, then so be it.
But there can be little time to bring in new players with that money before Monday at midnight, and we cannot help but think that Kevin Keegan has to be furious behind the scenes with all of this.
He cannot be happy that Newcastle are willing to sell one of his best players, and he cannot be happy that James himself would walk out on his manager, seemingly just for more money.
We are not happy with all of this, and if this happened 6 weeks ago, it wouldn’t have been too bad, because at least for £12M we could have brought in a couple of very good players.
But this gives Kevin very little maneuvering time in the transfer window, and we will be very sorry to see James leave the club at this time.
If this happens we have to be doubtful, for once, on Mike Ashley’s aims for the club, because it seems that we may have become a selling club again. It’s also likely we will have brought in more money this summer than paid out – so news we were willing to spend £20M net in the transfer window, a few months ago, doesn’t seem like it will happen.
And that amount was met with more than a little derision by the fans at the time.
Aston Villa also advanced into the UEFA Cup first round proper last night, as they drew 1-1 with FH Hafnarfjordur, and go through on a 5-2 aggregate.
That means both Everton and Aston Villa can offer James European Football this season, which Newcastle cannot.
Whatever happens, we’ll have to back Kevin and the team all the way, whoever is finally left in the squad next Monday, and it will be very interesting today at the press conference for tomorrow’s game at Arsenal, exactly what Kevin will divulge.
If Milner is not in the squad that’s a very bad sign for those of us who are still hoping to keep him, although they could include him in the squad and leave him out of the final 18 players too.
It’s hard to believe all this is happening, when we should be concentrating on bringing in new players to the club, in this the last 3 days of the transfer window.
But we all know that being a fan of Newcastle United has never been easy - and so it remains.
We’ll just have to hope for some nice surprises in the next 3 days - it could still happen we capture some very good players, but it’s going to be very late, an we’ll probably have to be as lucky as Coventry were on Tuesday night.
Comments welcome.

we SHOULDNT sell milner at all, alothugh 10-12mill is a VERY good offer for a player who is only 22 years old, i havnt made my mind up bout milner, but 10-12mill is a VERY good offer

10mil for Jimmy.. sorry mate off you go. Can we throw in Smithy?
4 Martin // Aug 29, 2008 at 9:31
It’s a dodgy time just now, but then, as seems to be the case with Newcastle under Ashley - we take a big dip before getting a lift!
I know we’ve been moving very slowly in the transfer window this year, but we also know that things CAN move quicker in the final few days of the window! It’s also very naive to suspect we haven’t spoken to other players or at least earmarked them IF this deal goes through…

10-12m?! Amazing bit of business, sell him asap! The club can buy 2 new players for that amount, Milner is not that good anyway.
Great deal.

ed, i wouldnt say 12 million is that bad of a consequence.
regardless of whether he handed in a transfer request i would like too see newcastle accept that sort of money for milner providing it was wisely invested in a better player.
7 seetow // Aug 29, 2008 at 9:32
12mil quid, you must be having a laugh! we’ll be laughing all the way to the bank. no pace, no crossing ability, only hardworking. i would take 9mil for him, needless to say 12!
8 kenny g // Aug 29, 2008 at 9:32
fuggin right, 12mil!!!!
though the timing may be bad, a bidding war between everton and villa is likely to push every last penny we are likely to get from Jimmy
9 antz1uk // Aug 29, 2008 at 9:33
i disagree with the way milner has gone about things but if we could just get rid of smith and ameobi i would give him a 10k rise, however, 12mil is top quality for an uncapped player
10 andoni // Aug 29, 2008 at 9:33
we have to improve milner’s contract. in this moment, he’s one of the best players for newcastle.

I do wonder what ashley’s intentions are, after all he has sat with most toon fans last season so must know how we feel and what type of players we want to see at the club, so with this in mind is he really going to let one of our better players leave with no intentions of replacing him?? or even worse bring no one in at all?? Im not sure I hope he’s just making us sweat!! and hopefullly the next few days see us bring in a few quality players so we all wonder why we were so worried.

13 broon ale // Aug 29, 2008 at 9:34
if we got that sort of money we would have to reinvest in a suitable replacement. i would hate to have to rely on geremi. pretty much everything he tried against coventry he cocked up.
14 BenjiToon // Aug 29, 2008 at 9:35
£12m? Really? It would be good business wouldn’t it?
We all agree the timing os wrong. James is as much to blame for this as the club. I stand by the view that a player who tries to force a pay hike by threatening to leave is out of order. At the same time any one who boos him, should be play Saturday, is equally wrong.
Worst case scenario: Milner leaves last minutes Monday and we sign no new players. We still have a £10m+ in the bank, a squad stronger in a number of areas than last year and can buy in January. But, of course, lack James tenacity and running down the right.
Best case scenario: we sell James for £12m asap and buy 1, 2 or 3 new players who add quality and depth to the squad. I cant believe we haven’t got at least 1 in the pipeline somewhere!
15 nr // Aug 29, 2008 at 9:37
All that money for lots of step-overs, plenty of running and a good bleep test score! We should snap £10million up asap, he does not score enough or get enough assists. Bad timing though and the board-room is a shambles. Can see KK walking.

i wonder if sunderland would be interested in alan smith.
or am i write in saying that keane whilst at man united questioned the standard of smith saying something along the lines of “the new players need to have more balls if they want to play in this team”
17 Milner // Aug 29, 2008 at 9:37
Sell him for 12million? Good business but the money will just go to Mike pocket. Be realistic folks, he just want to earn money out of us. An investment which will reap him profits in long run.
18 andoni // Aug 29, 2008 at 9:38
milner knows that he’s one of the most valuable player at newcastle. i don’t know why he wants to go out…
19 Matt // Aug 29, 2008 at 9:38
Ok 12m might be a good deal but with 3 days to go who on earth can you replace him with for cheaper and who would you buy with the excess? There’s not many central mids or right wingers for cheaper who are of a good standard.
20 Dublin Toon // Aug 29, 2008 at 9:39
12m is indeed a great price for a player that I think often flatters to deceive. I am not for one second trying to imply that I think Milner is a bad player, he just isn’t a 12m player (yet). The main concern is the timing of this. Why did James wait until so late to hand in a request, has someone been secretly courting him and forced his hand? Who can we get in to replace him, is Jonas already here for that with Geremi as cover? Yet again the circus that is NUFC continues, and I for one absolutely love it - there is never a dull moment!

we are in a panic buy situation already, dont forget we wont get 10 million for milner, we have to give leeds their cut, we might end up with 7 or8 million if we are lucky, still that could be enough to buy a couple of players even if ashley still does’nt what to spend any money, we will certainly need them.
28 Born Again Geordie // Aug 29, 2008 at 9:44
I think £12 million is a good deal - I don’t want him to go but as I have said before on previuos posts - I am convinced we have someone waiting in the wings to replace the lad. Lets not judge until Tuesday Keep the faith
29 BenjiToon // Aug 29, 2008 at 9:44
Broon Ale - well, that’s always possible I guess. But of that’s the case then when our three stikers all fit (October it seems) KK will change the formation to 4-3-3 again. Then you’ll have a choice of Jonas, Butt, Guthrie, Zog and Geremi (and at some point Fists of Fury aka Barton) for the midfield 3. Unless Zog goes to LB again.
Either way there’s at least 5 who could do a decent job in the formation. Miss Milner less then I think…
30 Ericles // Aug 29, 2008 at 9:44
Everton are also interested in Milner? Apparently the Toffees were also sniffing around Smith. OK Everton - you can have Milner if you take Smith too. We should take on board the mooted offer of the Norwegian Skeljbred . He’s worth getting, he only lives across the road (well the North Sea) and he’s a good young prospect. Watch this space - or the space Milner intends to create.
31 neeraj // Aug 29, 2008 at 9:45
better get a replacement for milner
32 SwedEric // Aug 29, 2008 at 9:45
Well… Everyone has all preseason said they would take 9M pound directly, and now we are offered 12? Well, he isn´t worth that in a long way!
OK, I would love to have him here. But he´s not worth more than he earns atm, and we have Duff, Zog and Gutierrez at the club already, who all are as good, if not better.
10M or more and I wouldn´t even think about it, especialy when it is he who wants to leave!
But then again, cant under stand why he would like to leave everything in Newcastle to play for Villa or Everton. OK, they have Europe this year, but leave all his friends, a bigger club and everyone he knows… Just so he might get a little better paycheck? If he works hard and keeps his head down, he will get a new contract in 2-3 seasons here that will be bigger!
Sell him! Will always respect the guy, but not worth 12M, wouldn´t like if we bought him for over 6M!
33 BenjiToon // Aug 29, 2008 at 9:46
Sweendog - you’ve been banging on about Arda as if its a done deal for ages. How do you know?
34 StevieA // Aug 29, 2008 at 9:46
I will say again that I don’t rate Milner at all. Yes he’s energetic, good at running at people and occasionally crosses/shoots well but he is not consistent enough.
When you look at the wingers we have had in the past such as Ginola, Gillespie, Robert, Solano then Milner pales in comparison when it comes to making an impact - goals and assists.
Maybe Mike Ashleigh sees this as an opportunity to improve the squad? We have Duff, Guttirrez and N’Zogbia as it is.
I think a lot of fans have a nostalgic feeling when it comes to Milner but if you look at his record it’s less than impressive.
We need real impact players if we are to get back into europe and Milner is someone we don’t need in my view.
35 Simen // Aug 29, 2008 at 9:48
Haha! 12 mil! He’s probably worth half of that! Agree with you seetow. Yea, Milner is hard working, but don’t think he has any crossing ability or pace. He to often runs with the ball down the right with no clue what to do. Sell him asap! There are much much better wingers around, the only problem is the time left of the window, that makes me a bit concerned:(
And of course, really hope Keegan is ok with this. He’s probably not cos of the squad size.
36 Gritish Films // Aug 29, 2008 at 9:48
Yeah let’s hope a bidding war steps up, Maybe Liverpool will come in with £10 mill & a year long loan of Argie number 3 the LB. Glad that SWP has gone back to the largest council house in Europe…did’nt want him at the Toon. If we are getting 12m for Milner, please do use the money to land Arshavin as a replacement (+ another 8m). Arshavin, Coloccini and Owen can form the core of a team that would be competing in the top 6 positions for the next 4 seasons.

As I said yesterday, I don’t want to lose Milner.
However, 12m pounds is quite a lot of money, so if he wants to go, then sell him for 12m.
What I don’t get is why we didn’t bid for SWP then..
If we sell Milner, I suppose squad will be:
GK: Given, Harps, Krul, Forster
RB: Beye
LB: Enrique
CB: Coloccini, Taylor, Bassong, Cacapa, Edgar
LM: N’Zogbia, Duff
RM: Gutierrez, Geremi
CM: Butt, Guthrie, (Barton)
ST: Owen, Oba, Viduka, Smith, Ameobi, Carroll
I think it becomes clear that we need at least:
CM
LB
A back-up RB and another striker (cuz oursare always injured!) would be good too. I also wouldn’t mind cover for Gutierrez on the RM but I suppose Geremi can be back-up for now..
Strongest team with (injury-free) current squad if Milner goes…
………………………Given……………………….
Beye…….Coloccini……Taylor…….Enrique
………………Guthrie………..Butt………………..
Jonas………………………………………N’Zogbia
…………………Oba…….Owen…………………….
Harper, Viduka, Geremi and Bassong providing the backup for the different areas of the park.
This is not TOO shabby but SUCH a thin squad and a few injuries would be hugely problematic.
41 Ben // Aug 29, 2008 at 9:50
Can’t believe the fuss. All this is just normal business, you buy young players, develop them, and sell some of them when the price is right. Good work, good business. Now bring in some new players we haven’t heard of before - and please, please, no WOW-signing.
42 BenjiToon // Aug 29, 2008 at 9:50
Ericles - I Skeljbred could be a good addition, although he’s CM not so much a winger. (My oh my do we need and attacking CM though!) Thing is I just don’t buy the Chronicle’c claim. If you read the Erik Hoftun quote it basically says they’d have to consider a £6m bid. That doesn’t mean they’re ready to sell, or that he’s been offered. It just means they can’t turn down a good price and would negotiate with the bidder. Not as certain as Chron implies…unless there’s something we don’t know…

Doubt we will see that money still got a 20+ mill debt (or so that liar says) and we still need to cover transfer for collo) so expect two 3 mill or one 6 mill signing. I dont believe this guy will put anymore money into the club and anything that he says I dont take seriously because he has not done any of the things that he said he will do. He has decieved KK and the Fans, sell up and get lost.
56 BenjiToon // Aug 29, 2008 at 10:01
milkatoon - he DOES have a say. KK himseld said so, and Ashley’s said so. The “recruitment team” scout, KK gives a list of targets, they do the bidding and negotiating and he gives final yes/no.
Does that mean he wants Milner to go and will be happy about it? Shouldn’t think so! But has he discussed it with the club hierachy. Of course, at Weds meeting and probably last week when the request was put in.
Don’t mistake KKs high praise of James as a sign he was desperate to keep him and fighting against the rest of the club. More likely that he was playing canny - if Milner goes it ups the price, if he stays it means he knows his boss loves him. All good thinking by KK but NOT proof there’s an argument inside he club.

Agree Fandi - Still think if/when he goes we need an Attacking MF rather than a replacement winger, we have Zog and Jonas that can play there a really good AMF will do the job, sure we need cover on the wings but that isnt as much a priority as AMF and a target man CF.
As this request was handed in a week before we ever got to know about it I am sure that the club have assessed what they will get or him and approached other clubs/agents for a replacement, maybe that is why they made it public as they have a replacement already lined up.

Shame Everton didnt pipe up sooner, we could have made a deal with milner & smith for Arteta+Cash!!! £10-12 million is a good price for James, as I dont see where he’ll improve in the next couple of seasons?
I still think Ashley has something big up his sleeve…think about it for a minute, many of us think (myself included) that he’s here to make a quick buck, and to do that he needs to fill the seats and sell shirts - who else but a BIG NAME will do this? Someone along the lines of Berbatov, Henry, Eto, Beckham, possibly the Hunter…Any of these would bring in happy fans!
Maybe a long shot, but the Brazilian with the big teeth is a free agent ‘RONALDO’ could he be a short term fix to our striking problems? KK could get him super fit in no time
Also I like the thought that we could be one of the 3teams Henrik Larrson might be considering.
One last thought, how about approaching Birmingham for Seb Larrson & James McFadden, and get Zarate in too

We’re not gonna see £9m/£10m, we’re more likely to see £7m/£8m considering Leeds’ sell on clause. Either way, good business. His work rate and fitness is top class, but he just doesn’t have the final product. Personally, put Jonas on the right, Zog on the left and we’re sorted!
However, we do need to replace Milner with someone technically superior.
We still need a LB/CB (someone capable playing both positions), DM, CM , ST. And now Milner is leaving we need an attacking midfield player or winger!
70 Tom // Aug 29, 2008 at 10:11

hard to believe the star of euro 2008 has no transfer offers!!!!!!!!!

toonrich I think you are been a bit optimistic with any of the players you mentioned, if ashley was bothered about big name signings and better shirt sales he would have signed one when season tickets were up for renewal

Cheers Broon Ale, I wasnt sure where Zarate had gone this summer…
Ohmelads, I agree Ronaldo would be another gamble…but he’d be free so we could offer him a decent wage without loosing too much on him!
Also seen that we’re still interested in that young leicester lad Mattlock, he’s a LB rated about 5mil.

dick, you’re probably very right in that comment…I just like to be a dreamer!! no harm in it
I can cry come midnight monday when that SSN reporter is outside SJP waiting on some new signing that doesnt appear, just like in Jan!!!

3 players in needed now!! greatbusiness at 12m if thats the price, cant argue with that, BUT we MUST get players in and proven quality for me Turan, Derdiyok, Huntellaar Inler??? come MA spend now, speculate to accumulate!! you would be backed to the hilt if these type of players came in, you would see 52000 back for the Hull game also!!!

What’s happening with Warnock….is that all off now, like? Sat here at work with a hangover, surrounded by a load of cockneys and it’s getting embarrassing - we are linked with nowt! - Roll on tomorrow, got a ticket in the gooners end….should be fun!!

I’m suprised non of the epl clubs have had a closer look t Zirkov(sp) the russian guy…he was immense in the euros. Is that another unrealistic target though?

ohmelads, here ya go:
“Defender Kamil Zayatte is set for talks with Newcastle officials, after the Magpies failed with another bid for Stephen Warnock.
The Magpies boss is known to be an admirer of Blackburn star Warnock, but Rovers do not want to sell the former Liverpool man, who handed in a transfer request earlier this summer. Newcastle have reportedly seen a third bid, of around £4million, rejected by Blackburn.
So that leaves the 23-year-old Zayette, who can also play as a defensive midfielder. Newcastle are leading the chase for his signature despite interest from Premier League rivals Everton.”

The way i see it is that Newcastle instigated the move by announcing his transfer request, so i think we have a replacement lined up but we needed the cash from the milner deal before it can be completed.
