News is coming through that indeed Kevin Keegan, at the end of the day, sanctioned the move to sell James Milner to Aston Villa today, for a reported 9M.
Kevin Keegan - sanctioned Milner move - clarifies some things
But this seems rather strange to us, because only on Tuesday night, after the fantastic Coventry game, Kevin had said he didn’t even want to talk about losing Milner, and that Milner should be in the full England squad.
Such a quick change of opinion is a little surprising.
But one of the things that had worried us most – if you believe the reports about Milner over the last few days, is that Keegan would have thought he was being undermined by Ashley.
That’s what we were really concerned about, although we didn’t mention it, well not too many times.
But if Keegan is happy with what has transpired that’s fine with us, because he must make all decisions related to who Newcastle let go, and all decisions related to who we will go after, to attempt to bring to the club. We’ll not always be successful on the latter parts of course.
But he cannot be held responsible for the playing side of things at the club unless he has this authority - that’s for sure.
But it now appears that Ashley left the decision to Keegan himself to make, maybe based on which other players Mike Ashley and Dennis Wise were trying to get into the club. Kevin has also said the £9M (Newcastle get £7.8M and Leeds get £1.8M), will be sued for new players, and Keegan seems to have been persuaded by Ashley and Wise.
Now of course we’ll need to wait and see what these players are like but you would think for Kevin to let Milner go some of the players we are after have to be top class. You would think that wouldn’t you?
Kevin told the press this morning - referring to James Milner:
“He’s a player, in an ideal world, you would not want to lose, but I just want to make it absolutely clear that at the end of the day, it was my decision to sell him.”“We got an offer that I feel was his value. We are all aware James has had a difficult time - he almost signed for them once before [two years ago while on loan] and was dragged back.”
“But he has always behaved impeccably. He’s a fantastic professional, and there’s no doubt about it, they’ve got an outstanding player and we have got to move on.”
Good words from the manager, and of course Ashley comes out of this looking a whole lot better than what it looked like with the press reports earlier this morning.
We did suggest that what was being reported just seemed to be too bad to be true, with Milner leaving against Kevin’s wishes (as far as we then knew), and Michael Owen reportedly beeing offered a one year deal for £85K a year.
And while that report is emanating from the Evening Chronicle, we have to take it as pure speculation at this point - because we cannot believe Owen would accept the deal, as reported.
Things are looking a lot better now that Kevin has clarified the situation, but whenever we hear Kevin talk, we always feel a lot better about the club, he’s such a great communicator with an unsurmountable passion for the club.
So who are the players we are after?
Comments welcome.

why dont we sign berbatov if he loves the toon that much….or maybe thats the wow singing
3 kagthemag // Aug 29, 2008 at 15:35
let’s hope we see the WOW signing this weekend. We need a couple of quality signings, creative mid for sure.
remember when things kicked off when KK sold Andy Cole - we certainly get a WOW signing then didn’t we? I’m sure KK will come up with the goods (look at the 3 he’s signed so far - any complaints?)

dissapointing to see milner go to say the least i thought we were building the team around him, taylor and owen…guess not. if we do not get at least 4 quality players i dont see us doing better than 8th. it will be interesting to see who we get to replace the boy because he is going to be an england international someday. my mood will be dampened till we get a couple capable players in

Seb Larsson could be in by Monday - Milner’s position, same age, half the price and as good as Milner IMO

Not at all disappointed about Milner leaving. We have wingers aplenty and Villa paid over the odds IMO. Good bit of business.

You’d have to be off your rocker to expect anyone to take a pay-cut just for the ‘love of being involved”. I can however see them lowering his base salary and as Owen is proven player, scoring plenty of goals to bump that up with bonuses.
Can I just say, Ed and everyone else with gloomy thoughts expelled today: we were aware of everyone’s roles prior today. We can’t keep asking the same questions. It’s ridiculous. Have some confidence in who we are and where we want to go. Ashley in the past and Keegan today has public said the club is not for sale and the owner is committed. Enough of the I-hate-Mike-Ashley brigade please.

I feel a lot better after hearing what King Kev had to say on the Milner transfer. Hes obviously got someone else lined up to replace him. Possibly an AM maybe?
I really hope he gets his targets cause it sounds to me that they’re going to be top notch. He also seems pretty confident that at least 2 are very close, so hopefully we’ll have some good news before the dreaded deadline day (Monday).

speaking of selling andy cole………i think we were better when andy cole was here and not shearer. coles record is far better than shearers too in terms of goals to games ratio. i anit worried about milner as long as we do bring in some top draw players. milners replacement has to be better otherwise it was a pointless move in terms of improvement and this sale will only have been to give cashley a few more million squeezed out of us. we will know by monday night. i fail to belive that we will get in the four or five signings that kk is on about though, we have not been able to do it in three months so it aint going to happen in three days.
the owne thing is far more of a concern to me. a one year extension at a reduced rate???? ah well, bye bye owen eh!!

We need 3 or 4 quality additions to the squad before then or we could be struggling by January.

i hope and pray we get at least one from afellay, moutinho, veloso, diego, arshavin, m.fernandez, inler or xabi alonso. any of them alongside a left-back for cover/competition, and a striker - derdiyok…

gk - given (harper, krul)

It looks like Owen might be sold as well. To be honest… it might be for the best. Midway through last season, I was ready to unload him for nothing. Then he saved us from the drop… He scores goals, but what else does he provide? And he only cares about playing for England
21 James // Aug 29, 2008 at 15:50
Reading between the lines :
Dear Newcastle Supporters.
When I took over last time we were in the lower leagues, and I sold and bought players over time to push us to the brink of the Premiership title.
Slowly we are putting the same team together (Guthrie = Rob Lee ; Gutierrez = Ginola), and we will be a force again.
Last year we were slated up and down the land for our defensive record. Already this season we are being praised for looking solid.
I had to fix the defense first, but I’m now working on the attack.
So please be patient with my decisions.
Yours Forever
Kevin Keegan

There is a load of players we could bring in now that would make the Milner move a great bit of business. He would have been gone next year anyway if all goes/went to plan and he’d shown the same rate of improvement and ‘desire’ to play at SJP as he has done recently.
It’s only ’stupid’ if a player of lower quality or, heaven forbid, no one is brought in.

now mabye enrique at lb, n’zog on da left, jonas on the right
a new lb - dede, borussia dortmond, 3m, or taiwo marsille 4m

sum1 like gudjohnson or saviola
a new rm - solano
a new cm, barry to get villa back!!! lol i would love parker back, or sum1 like darren fletcher or motta ,

Alonso is back with Liverpool now, so it would be an ideal time to sign him up.
Also,it is silly to suggest Berbatov would sign for us, but if anyone outside of the top 4 can do it, we can. However, when we signed Shearer from under the nose of taggart we were his home club and we were in a much better state than we are now.
I expect to see one “known” PL player, ie Alonso, Joe Cole, etc.. turn up and a couple of “unknowns” like Colo and Spidey.

Just an idea but how about WE FORGET WHO COMES AND GOES. That kills a teams spirits and they need us the 12th man more than ever. Sing what we have is what we want and sing the praises of the players we have and want to be with us. Im always scared. I think the top 4 will offer for jonas and coloccini next year and we may lose one of them maybe two depending on whether they love money and as jonas bought his own contract out who knows. BUt for now we must move forward so whoever we sell or bring in does there best we do our best and hopefully if we sell, it is a business we make a profit. And bring in a few for that money. Thats gradual business sense balancing books and increasing better numbers of players at the same time. The big money sheppard time has gone. And now ashley is sorting the club out to be profitable and ultimatly a powerhouse in football for the right reasons. Follow the faith. Don’t worry about the window till after the arsenal game. Thats all i have to say. Its winable.

@Trust KK: goals = points. Besides that he has proven to be a leader of men and he boosts our international profile, which equals money, and he is a star attraction to other players. Derdiyok said it would be a dream to play with him.
@Craig: look in your toon history book. Ferdinand followed Cole.
We are light, but I’m happy with how things have gone. The truth is that a lot of wastrels (excluding Milner & Faye) have left the club with young, quality, motivated, players joining. It isn’t as simple as x go out, y come in. Look at who’s left.

I don’t think it’s strange words at all and to be honest I think there’s a lot of people who need to eat some humble pie for lashing out at Mike Ashley. Why would he interfere with Keegan’s running of the club? I’m sorry but this was always Kev’s decision it’s like when he sold Cole to gain Ferdinand. There’s a lot of people who will jump on the club whatever happens and frankly I say to you lot get a grip or get lost we all need to stick together and get behind the club

I really hope we bring in 4 top notch players but as for Berbatov its a no no for me, the way he has went on at Spurs is nothing but disgraceful, going on like a spoilt brat just like Ronaldo at Man utd. We do not want people like that at NUFC we want someone who will wear the shirt with pride and not just come here to make the numbers up.

futuresblackandwhite…… is alonso really all that? did you see him the other day like? He is very stationary in midfield and I don’t think he did that much last season. Liverpool fans all want rid AND Barry looks to be staying at Villa so they will have to keep him I think.
Every single player that has gone since KK arrived has represented progression for our club… best of all is Milner… I was always agitated when I heard his name in the starting line up… he undermines our attempts at a fluent attacking style. Gone at last… well chuffed.
We have Zog (Duffer) for left, Spidey on the right (Geremi) .. that’s fine when you bear in mind that a new striker may well be purchased before Tuesday (please, please, please Huntelaar, Arshavin or Saviola- yes I know it’s a fantasy) and KK will use the 4-3-3 system again throughout the season.
Enrique and Zog were awesome against Coventry and I’d like to see them forming the left sided combo this season.

Berbatov has a horrible attitude at Spurs, but he wanted to be transferred and they sold his strike partner in stead . . . They are just like NUFC a few years ago, constant turmoil and nonsensical big purchases (other than Bentley, that was a great signing)
He scores goals though, and is so skilled on the ball it’s insane. I believe that he would be perfect with Oba, using his dribbling ability and passing to send Oba in on goal, and scoring quite a few himself.

its more than 10 years later and as keegan has said himself it is so much harder to deal in the transfer market than then
77 HeronMag // Aug 29, 2008 at 16:29
Berbatov - a lovely idea but it’s the type of thing I would read on another teams website (like the mackem article about signing Owen) that would make me laugh my arse of.
No chance lads. But hey, lets dream
78 Toon1978 // Aug 29, 2008 at 16:29
Why not these two up front
========Berbatov=======Huntelaar=====
Trust KK, that would be awesome lol.
79 neeraj // Aug 29, 2008 at 16:31
as i said i am just setting my hopes high
80 HeronMag // Aug 29, 2008 at 16:31
Cooper - let’s just try and trust KK. If no one comes in by the end of the window THEN we can all start throwing ourselves out of windows. Until then I choose to keep the faith
81 Dondatta13 // Aug 29, 2008 at 16:33
HeronMag, thats not fair lol as a Heron and a Mag you would fly if you jumped out of a window hahaha
82 blerred // Aug 29, 2008 at 16:33
BERBATOV IS CLASS ON HIS DAY BUT OWEN GURANTEES YOU GOALS WHETHER HE’S PLAYING WELL OR NOT. BERBATOV IS APPAULING WHEN HE DOESN’T FANCY IT. NO DOUBTING HIS TALENT THOUGH. WOULD PREFER HUNTELAAR, GOMIS, SANTA CRUZ OR MARIO GOMEZ FOR A LOT LESS COIN. ALTHOUGH IF WE GOT BERB IT WOULD DEFO ANNOY THE SPUDS, SO MAYBE WE SHOULD GET HIM
FELLAINI OF STNADARD LIEGE COULD BE A GREAT LONG-TERM REPLACEMENT FOR BUTT AND IS SAID TO BR AVAILABLE FOR £5-7M. HE LOOKED GOOD AGAINST THE SCOUSERS. AS DID THE CAPTAIN DEFOUR.
DREAM SIGNING FOR ME WOULD BE DIEGO OR MOUTINHO
83 neeraj // Aug 29, 2008 at 16:34
dondatta13
i knew all the time along that berba was a toon fan
but what i want to say is the timing of this
this may be just to build up the speculation
but its a good dream
84 Cooper // Aug 29, 2008 at 16:35
i would go 100% all out to get huntellar like
85 Chris H // Aug 29, 2008 at 16:36
There’d be no chance of us getting Berbatov lads TBH. Even if we bid £25m-£30m Man U would just come in and take him from under our noses like they did with Roonie!
Man U were also after Huntelaar not so long ago though, so I can’t see them getting both.
I hope Owen gets a new contract sorted rather than lose him for peanuts. Keegan had said in the meeting that contract talks have been put on the back burner so they could concentrate on transfers, so I can’t see anything happening until after Tuesday (if Owen’s still here).
86 Trust KK // Aug 29, 2008 at 16:36
@Jimi
It just seems to me that Owen kills attacks whenever he’s not on the end of the final pass. I can’t remember him creating any goals, but then agian it’s not his job.
In truth I can only remember one time when he had a handball in the box, but it wasn’t called. So that is an unfair criticism, especailly considering a superstar striker had dropped back so deep.
The main thing is that he is always injured. You are right in that the goals overshadow the rest of his game, I just don’t see him contribute anything by way of creativity, unlike Berbatov.
87 Glenn // Aug 29, 2008 at 16:37
I reckon Keegan was talking him up after the Cov game to bump up the price, I’ve read it could go up to £12m. Personally I’m sad to see him go, but then again we’ve already got a load of wingers anyway. If we get 3-4 players in I’ll accept it, if not ,then what the bloody hell is the recruitment team up to?
88 HeronMag // Aug 29, 2008 at 16:37
LOL @ Dondatta13
Very good mate
89 Jimi // Aug 29, 2008 at 16:38
How can anyone seriously want a sulking, spoilt albeit talented footballer over our man of men captain legendary footballer who’s had a few unlucky injuries. :0
I’ve got a feeling Owen will leave his injury mess behind him and hope we can keep hold of him.
90 domtoon // Aug 29, 2008 at 16:39
The Sparkatron, I’m sure Milner will transform your team from a top 10 into a top 4. Ummmm sorry mate, I don’t think so.
One word
Stoke?
Now sod off you bellend
91 Dondatta13 // Aug 29, 2008 at 16:43
Neeraj, Im not saying it will definitley happen, all im saying is I have a GUT FEELING we will sign Berbatov and have had these feeling for two weeks now.
Mind you those direct quotes from his mam (on the link I posted on comment #72 just make the hairs on the back of my neck stand up!

93 domtoon // Aug 29, 2008 at 16:45
Thinking about it, neither will Cuellar, Sidwell, or Reo-Coker hahahahah
We’ve got KK and that’s all we’ll ever need. Look forward to our prem league games.
94 Jimi // Aug 29, 2008 at 16:45
@ TrustKK
I agree with you that Berbatov is more of a creative player, but I just don’t like his attitude. Would have Owen any day..
95 Trust KK // Aug 29, 2008 at 16:47
I’ve heard Keegan laughed off the 85k one year offer for Owen? If so maybe it is better to just sign MO to an extension. If that offer is real, then there’s no way he will sign it and we will have to sell. Spurs need a striker, hence the Berbatov speculation. I certainly will not be unhappy if we keep Owen, but if he has to go I would love to bring in Berbatov, he would be class with martins.
96 LATINAMERICATOON // Aug 29, 2008 at 16:47
I’m pleased milner has gone, He is a grafter nothing less. He is young and will surely get better and good luck to him but we need someone with more natura talent. 12 m for him is overpaid as he is english we can bring in 2 better players for that price. Guys check out Marcelo Moreno Martins on you tube. who has jus signed for Shaktar Donetsk. He is only 18 and was top scorer for Cruzeiro and one of the top scorers in la copa libertadores. He’s a bolivian lad and one of the continent’s brightest striker prospects, he has scored 3 goals in 4 starts for Bolivia which is quite something as bolivia are very poor. We should of snatched him. Tell me what you think
I aslo think we need some cm/am as we are well short in the middle with only Butt guthrie and barton. I would ideally buy a AM and DM and a striker aloing with Zayate to cover for an ageing beye and I’d be more than happy for the season.

Jimi comment #93 ..
Mate ya can’t blame Berbatov for having a bad attitude lol wouldnt you playing for the Spuds?
I dont blame him one bit
Berba’ son, ya boyhood club is calling
If he signed he would have a great attitude for us ..
Freddie Adu just signed for Rangers?
99 smithio // Aug 29, 2008 at 16:51
Berbatov spits his dummy out too often. This isn’t the first time he hasn’t played because “his head’s not right”. With the NUFC soap it wouldn’t be long until he refuses to play for us when things aren’t going his way. If you didn’t want to play for the club you shouldn’t sign a contact. CONTRACTS SHOULD BE HONOURED.
100 Micky Toon // Aug 29, 2008 at 16:55
Someone mentioned Kightly. The kid is brilliant. If we could get him for around £4m he would be an excellent signing. I watch a lot of the Wolves due to the missus being from there and her dad and brother are fans. I even went to the play offs when they were beaten by the baggies. Not a bad atmosphere for a small stadium. Anyway, sign Kightly if only to pee off the inlaws
101 Dondatta13 // Aug 29, 2008 at 16:55
SORRY no its not Freddie Adu who signed for Rangers its MAURICE EDU lol
Maybe im too quick on the draw hahaha
Soz guys
102 shoesoff // Aug 29, 2008 at 16:57
Owen = consistently world class player when fit
Berba = sulky child who disappears from way too many games.
No contest for me, personally think Owen has to be totally central to any building we do, one of a small number of players we have that is top 4 quality.
103 Cooper // Aug 29, 2008 at 17:01
nothing would please me more this weekend than joey barton coming off the bench and getting the winner against arsenal
to shut all the whinging c***s up
104 Nobby's Dad // Aug 29, 2008 at 17:11
Micky Toon ……I mentioned Kightly, but you are the only one to pick it up. We have apparently an interest in him - this was said about 4 weeks ago by one of the north east football correspondents on Talk Sport, so he might be a possible target now Milner has gone.
105 SwedEric // Aug 29, 2008 at 17:21
Ohh… what did I say cuple of hours ago… Of course it wasnt ashley who decided and KK was now sitting hom angry, as some people said… “I feel gutted, can only think how KK feels”..
Com on guys… Get a grip sometime…
And the WOW signing was a rumor someone said they had hear Ashley say… And it sounds like many here thinks he has promised us it! Would happily take one thou!

I’ll take it. Could really use a replacement for Butt there.. solid DM with good distribution. If we can’t bring someone else in, Barton could be groomed for that spot (would need cover though, for sure heh)
107 ende // Aug 29, 2008 at 17:33
” Keegan has also mentioned Geordie boy Michael Carrick as a future transfer target to owner Mike Ashley.”
I’ve wanted that for awhile now…

That lineup just oozes class. Maybe we’ll see that after january.
108 Trust KK // Aug 29, 2008 at 17:39
What about Guthrie? He’s a good DM IMO.
109 gotc0ffee // Aug 29, 2008 at 17:43
Nobby’s Dad - Kightly is a Premiership quality player and a great find from McCarthy - however, he has also proved to be an extremely loyal player, that said I think if the Wolves don’t hit the Prem this season he’s up for grabs (and should be a target) - he’ll not leave at the moment though as he feels he owes McCarthy for taking him to Molineux.
Good call though …
110 ende // Aug 29, 2008 at 17:46
I don’t personally think Guthrie’s quite ready for that, but that’d certainly be a good direction for him to take. The bad part about losing Milner is that a Guthrie - Milner pairing at CM gives us a good flat, box2box midfield option. I don’t leave home w/o Guthrie though, that’s for sure.

some of the comments on here never fail to cheer me up! trustkk tells us that owen scores goals, but what else does he provide??? do you want owen to slip an after eight under your pillow for you getting home ? he gets paid to score goals? maybe you dnt like his hair cut ? or you feel his choice of dish towel dosent match his kitchen?? jesusssssss!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! david elliston tells us that hes always scared? oh and that he fears the top four will buy our argies next season??? theve played a couple of games for god sake!
114 Toon Chicken // Aug 29, 2008 at 19:38
TrustKK - your comments about Michael Owen make it sound like you’ve never even watched a game a football before, let alone watched MO play for the toon?
Seriously, do you have any idea what you are talking about? Michael Owen is by far and away our best player - no one else even comes close. Next game watch him closely and you will see his positional sense is incredible - he always finds himself in space. His movement is exceptional - he drags one or two defenders out of position without fail, opening up space for other players to exploit. He rarely ever gives the ball away and always makes use of the ball when in possession. Oh, and he aint bad at sticking it in the onion bag either. But for his frustrating knack at picking up niggly injuries he would be the perfect player. We should keep him at NUFC at all costs in my opinion. If money is an issue - sack the dirty scouse scumbag jailbird thug and use his wages to subsidise a new contract for Owen.

My god!! You lot on here are become preoccupied with your own comments, hence, you have forgotten that your actually supposed to be passing comment on the blog!! And in my opinion, I’m becoming tired of the board hating, Keegan is the Lord rejoicing crap your writing on here! Even thought Keegan has said is was his decision to let Milner go, you still twist it round to seem like the club hates him!!! Eg “Keegan seems to have been persuaded by Ashley and Wise” your full of it and encourage fools to write crap on here which they believe it is actually valid. How about actually writing something balanced and rational for once?? Maybe along the lines like the club is being managed like never before, in the way like all other clubs who have been successful have been in the past??? Hmm maybe not, that wouldn’t make people visti your blog now wouldn’t it!!!! Tit!

Mick bell…………bit strong like. if you dont like it just dont bothercoming on, its simple really. no need for you to go around calling people ‘tits’ as you put it. how about you get a blog going and show us how its done. just chill out, its just a bunch of fans (cos thats what we are even if our views differ), having some banter, sometimes its good and sometimes it is negative. thats life.
