It would appear that Newcastle’s bid to sign Hamburg’s former Tottenham left-back Thimothée Atouba appears to have fallen through.
Thimothée Atoube – supposed to travel for Newcastle medical yesterday
But that’s not absolutely sure, with some confusing news being reported by his German club Hamburg, last night.
It seems the 26-year-old Cameroon international had been given permission to travel to Newcastle yesterday, presumably to undergo a medical, but instead turned up at the Hamburg club’s training ground.
But because of the uncertainty of the situation Atouba has not been included in the squad for the weekend game against Arminia Bielefeld.
A statement on Hamburg’s official website, www.hsv.de said:
“He [Atouba] originally wanted to travel to England on Friday to undergo a medical with Premier League club Newcastle United, but then surprisingly turned up at team training.“Because the Cameroonian’s future is unclear, coach Martin Jol has removed him from the squad for (Arminia) Bielefeld.”
To us this doesn’t necessarily mean the deal has fallen through, because his medial could have been delayed a day, or any number of things, but his move could still be on – we just don’t know.
Atouba has been capped 39 times by Cameroon, and was at Spurs in 2004, but didn’t have a happy time of things there, and stayed only one season at the club, and made 18 appearances for the first team.
Two days left in the transfer window, and we need at least four players through the door.
Comments welcome.

Comment #3nothing confusing about it. KK had 2 fullbacks lined up, Zayatte and Atouba. He deciced to sign Zayatte so Atouba was turned back in the last minute.
watch Zayatte sign today.

Comment #9I see Atouba as the type of player KK would get the best out of.
The combination of KK and the Toon Army can do alot for players that may have gone through struggling times.
For instance, I feel that with the fans and Keegan behind Barton, he will change his ways off the pitch.
thats the greatness of NUFC. If you play for the Toon, you are going to have the backing of some very passionate people.

Comment #10I wouldnt mind if we got him tbh. Everyone’s saying he’s crap but hes really not half as bad as everyone thinks. But then again I think that Enrique is good n most of you seem to dissagree there too. Derdiyok and Sklejbred would be good signings which i really hope they are pushing for. 1-1 draw today!

Comment #11Isn’t Zayatte a right back/central defender/holding midfielder while Atouba is a left back?
So signing one wouldn’t stop us from wanting the other.

“paid off the debt, turned the finances around……blaa blaa effing blaaa”
Look at it from a neutral eye, all he is interested in is balancing the books!! F*** the team, balance the books, he aint spent a bean on the team, he just got profit from selling buying colloccini “we have spent a record fpr a defender at nufc” 8 M max, we sell Milner for 10, effing wake up you lot………

Comment #14I thought Atouba was going to be our LB and Zayatte our RB cover. Both deals may still happen.
I know Atouba is not a fantastic signing in the eyes of the fans, but he is for Enrique.
I still believe Enrique will become a cornerstone of our defence and signing Atouba will give him competion (which is needed) he can learn from his experience and hes cover for injuries, without being that expensive signing like Warnock (which would have only hurried Enriques departure back to Spain at a knock down price).
I hope the Atouba signing happens. (along with loads of others)

Comment #17ToonKing – Zayatte is a right back/CB/CM we need a LB too, so what you said is rubbish. We need a LB but although Keegan has always stressed we want quality players I am surprised we are after Atouba. The guy is a liability, his defending is woeful and he tries stupid skills in the worst positions plus his disciplinary record is worrying. I hope the deal has fallen through because we can do better than a player that struggled to prove at at the time a weaker Tottenham side than our current team. Zayatte will sign to give us the RB/CB cover. I think a LB a CM, and a Striker will follow with the CM being the one of highest profile.

i find some of the clubs decisions frustrating myself and have voiced them in the past.
I believe his short term vision very frustrating, however his long tem plans seem very incouraging.
I dont honestly believe you are writing off his ‘balancing of the books’ as blaa blaa blaa! That was granted the only sensible option, but one hell of an outlay too.
Just think if FFS had not getting us into that state that money could have been used in the first team. Ashley IS investing (slowly and cautiously) but hes looking forward too, trying to bring in extra investments for the benefit of the team.
Its been a frustrating summer mate for all fans, but we are in a healthier position now than we have been for a long time.

Logic??
KK has played a left winger at left back???
Why would atouba be a challeng for enrique??
Surely if anything Enrique would be a challeng for atouba??
Talking to a german customer of mine, who supports hamburg….
Atouba is pap, cant wait to get rid, and we will buy him and put himm in front of a promising young left back????
Why????? he is CHEAP”!!!!!!!!

Comment #20Is angryman a mackem or something cause he is exactly the type of fan i hate. We have a good squad here mate, ashley has made this into a proper business which it actually is which freddie didnt and couldnt do to save his life. He’s given kk funds -we’ve signed good players but its people like you that think we can still get in these world class cannavaroesque signings. N it was most probably 10mill for coloccini and 9ish for milner and i’d rather have colo in the team than milner tbh

Comment #22I think you pick me up wrong mate,
I believe Enrique will be our 1st choice LB, but he needs a bit competion, to prevent complacency which Jose is prone to.
I just think a cheaper version at backup LB is a better choice for Enrique than splashing millions.

Comment #24Angryman – Yes Ashley is balancing the books. After years of Shepherds antics the thing that is needed most at NUFC is a stable platform to build on.
Do you really think that if he decides to sell NUFC now he will make a profit? probably £20m of assets down from when he took over – and he’s £250m out of pocket to start with.
The club has needed stability for decades and all you can think about is spending cash the way FFS used to. Get a grip on reality man!
What has he done apart from bring in KK – save the club from administration, a 15 point (at least) deduction for this season because of it. And to top it all off he got rid of the 2 worst things to happen to NUFC in a generation – Shepherd and Allardyce. Oh – and provide a future as well…..

There is promise that up to 5 more players will come in by Tuesday, i know you have your doubts, but lets take Keegan at face value.
I t will be interesting come next week where we stand in clubs transfer spending, i bet we’re not too far down the list.

I DO see where your coming from totally,
BUT, WHY do we pl;ay Charlie there???
I really dont think KK fancies enrique, and he looking for a replacement not a challenge, and in my opinion (And yours ithink) enrique is lots lots better than atouba, so dont buy him buy some fuka else.

Waht good is paying the debt off if we were to get relegated??
I keep saying the club was no where near going itno admin, it par for the course when an aggressive takeover is completed, the first thing the new owner says is “We saved the company” google it!!
My point is simple, relegation battle last season, with what we had now, Jonas and Coloccinni apart!! IMO Barton is better than Guthrie, so (though an excellent prospect)I am not counting him, jonas and coloccini aint gonna save us from a battle…..
Why do I think this??
Last season we had the best start to a premier league season since KK’s last entertainers……
means nowt!!
We need to buy buy buy, and buy quality, undoubtedl;y we have but in the process we have weakened our team drastically in other areas!!
Sorry if i upset people on here with (Maybe) a negative attitude, BUT……..and this is a fact….CASHLEY has done nowt to prove that he loves my team and wants them to be a success on the pitch!!
PERSONALLY, dont give a F*** about a what happens on the pitch, I pay 2k a year to watch a cracking game of football not to sit in a board room and say….”We arent so much in debt at the mo”

Comment #33What you say does make a bit sense. I to try not to take an interest in how much this player gets paid etc……i dont care to an extent.
However when it does impact on the first team then i worry. FFS regime was going to impact on the team eventually, for the detrement too!
But everyones got an opinion, thats what this blogs for and ig your paying 2k and more on NUFC a year your more than welcome to have concerns mate.
Dont get me wrong i do to, but i’m far from demanding the bloke out and welcome his arrival

Comment #38Angryman – Keegan has already stated that he agreed to the sale.
As for not being close to administration – wages were at about 80% of turnover. Leeds’s wages were at 90% turnover and they had champions league cash coming in so we couldn’t have been far off.
So if he were to sell who would you want? A corrupt Thai leader whos had his assetts seized, a (probably) corrupt Russian billionaire who will walk in a few years after calling in his debts, or an American family who take out a £300m loan against the club just to secure it?
I’ll take my chances with long term stable future with a chance of success thank very much
