Joey Barton Returns On The Bench Today

News last night that Joey Barton will make his return to the first team today against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium, as a substitute.

Joey Barton – on subs bench today at Arsenal

And Joey’s inclusion, with that of Shola Ameobi, shows how Newcastle are already down to the bare bones of their squad, and it’s only their 4th game of the season.

Shola failed a medical, which derailed his proposed move to Ipswich Town last week, because of a hamstring injury, but he still included on the bench.

Kevin told the Newcastle Journal today:

“I’ve got three kids to make up my 17 so I’ve got 14 senior players available and two of those, Joey Barton and Shola Ameobi will be on the bench,”

“Joey is in the squad ahead of schedule, it’s probably a week to 10 days earlier than is ideal, but common sense will prevail with him, we just needed to have seven subs.”

Kevin will attend an FA disciplinary hearing this coming Friday, to try to help his player Joey Barton, and he would not be surprised if Joey is suspended for a number of games, after admitting to assault on his former Manchester City team-mate Ousmane Dabo during a training-ground incident last May.

Keegan added:

“We don’t know what is going to happen on September 5. A group of people have got to sit down at the FA and do whatever they’ve got to do.”

“Some people think he might get 15 games, which sounds ridiculous, but it wouldn’t be unbelievable if he got a few games.”

“His frame of mind is good though, there is no problem there. It’s quicker than we wanted, but he’s not going to start, he’s only going to play for 10 or 15 minutes at most.”

The last thing we wanted before the end of the transfer window is to lose players which we did yesterday, rather dramatically with James Milner.

But Keegan probably has been promised one or two additional players in to compensate for that, with the ?10M we received from the deal, but the recruitment team led by Dennis Wise now has only 2 days to bring in new players, and right now, as witnessed by the youngsters who will be on the bench today, our strength in depth is just not there.

Comments welcome.

  • I still think we should get a more offensive midfielder (moutinho) and a holding midfielder like Veloso or Xabi Alonso.

At some point, did anyone said to himself- lets show our feeling for the club by not showing to a home game? but I mean in big numbers.

Altough KK did said yesterday that everything is good, I think that is part of his proffesionalism and loyalty to the club and MA, and not 100% because everything is really ok.

I just hope that today we will not get any of the players Injured. thats all !!!

    Good luck !

The strength in depth is currently all injured! I have faith that by Monday we will have a pretty good squad.

Good luck today Mr Barton, show us your worth please.

Will be his only chance as he may get a ban till December.
then he will be depressed and frustrated cos he’s not playing, go out on town, get pissed and have a go at somebody with or without a reason and here we go again.

At least Barton wants to play for NUFC. Milner obviously did not. Barton for all his trials and tribulations still wears black and white. Milner now plays for a club of a lesser colour, and a lesser future.

I misread the headline – “Joey Barton returns to the Bench today” – and assumed that he was again in trouble.
I struggle to understand how so many people are so happy – although they’re entitled to their opinions. Said it before – I only ever saw a fairly good midfielder on his good days and a poor one on his bad ones, not the world-beating creative genius that some seem to make him out to be. When did he have a game that was better than (say) Guthrie has had so far? I must have missed it last season.
Bottom line for me though – he’s already had about 3 chances to change and blown all of them – unlike some of the other players in the past who messed up but turned themselves round. I don’t think his behaviour problems will go away, the Toon will again be in the news for the wrong reasons and I really wish we had never signed him.
As for loyalty and wanting to play for Newcastle, he is loyal to the £60 a week he’s managed to hang on to and if some reports are to be believed (are they ever??), he’s told other players that he’s on a promise from Portsmouth that they’ll pick him up anytime he / we decide.

If he’s going down for 15 matches he may as well be unleashed to clean out Fabregas and Adi today and go for the jackpot.
If we get any kind or result tonight, KK will be a hero and all will be rosy. If we get lamped, the knives will be out and the doom merchants will have all of Sunday to prophecy.

This shows the state we’re in doesn’t it? I don’t mean all the panic some on here have about lack of transfers – of the players we might have wanted to keep only Milner’s left and 4 good players have already come in. What I mean is that our injuries have once again forced us to do something we didn’t want to.

KK said quite clearly he wanted to wait till after the FA hearing to decide when to bring Joey back. So this is unplanned and a bit rushed.

BUT…this might actually be a good thing. If Joey comes on and does well, if he behaves himself today and during the ban he’s bound to get on Friday, if he keeps fit…then he can come back having already made a gesture of his commimtent to the club at the Emirates today.

Huge ‘ifs’ of course. But here’s hoping.

Blimey – usually bland BBC reporter on Football Focus just gave us a right going over about Barton being on our bench! Said it wasn’t appropriate and that he hopes FA throw book at him.

Chicken – I agreed with your gut, same as that BBC blokey does. But the reality is that Barton has served hs time in prison and will take his FA ban without contesting it. So he should. He’s been a disgrace and deserves his punishment. But once tht’s done its done and he then has to live up to that fat contract he’s earning…as we’re never going to sack him…sadly.

i think joey once he’s back from the ban will be one of the first names on kks team sheet.
im fairly f**ked off over this whole ban thing… if anyone should be punished it should be man city or he should just be fined. its not fair on us as we bought him after the incident and he hasnt done anything of the sort (inside the training ground) with us.
howay we can beat the arse today come on!

Let’s just cast off our systematic hyprocrisy for one moment lads and imagine walking into a merseyside MD’s at 4 in the morning….Jesus…yep….we’d have all probably done the same thing as Joey and given the young, cocky twat a slap. Has anyone seen this youth, cockey, gang wannabe mentality lately. I know a few people who been on the wrong end of it whilst being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Joey aint no saint as his history tells but his crimes have been blown out of all proportion by the media and some of our own hyprocrite egos.
C’mon Joey, the fields yours now, it’s make or break time…
