Keegan - Newcastle Fans Shouldn’t Be Worried

August 30th, 2008 by Ed Harrison · 113 Comments

Kevin Keegan, the Newcastle manager, has told Newcastle fans not to worry about the decision to sell James Milner to Aston Villa for a reported ?12M transfer fee.

Kevin Keegan - Newcastle fans shouldn’t worry

Kevin talked to the Times today:

“Sometimes you just get to a point where you sit down and say, ‘Yeah, it’s the right time to do this deal,’ ” “You could argue that the clock on the wall, with the deadline three days away, makes it a bit more tricky, but I am pretty confident that we can overcome the loss.”

“It’s a win-win. James has got a fantastic move to a club that he knows, because he’s been on loan there, and we’ve got some more money in the pot. So in the short term it looks: ‘Wow, why have they done that?’”

“But over a period of time it might be: ‘That’s why.’ We have got to get three or four players in and I am confident we will do that. But I’ll be judged on Monday at 12 o’clock.”

“Although I am really disappointed to lose James, we can make a plus out of this. We can maybe slightly go in a different direction.”

“The fans shouldn’t be worried,” “I’m certainly not and if I was worried I would tell them.”

If it’s one person we completely trust at the Newcastle club, it’s Kevin Keegan.

And following his press conference yesterday, we were buoyed by Kevin’s positive attitude, and the fact he thought Wednesday’s meeting with Mike Ashley and Dennis Wise was great.

We must remember (we include ourselves in this) not to get carried away too much by what the popular press is reporting, because they hardly ever get anything right, and always look at the worst possible case, and are always trying to denigrate Newcastle United.

Did I get that right?

A win tomorrow at Arsenal is both possible and required, to revitalize the Newcastle United faithful,  following a confusing and sometimes depressing couple of days.

We think the lads can do just that.

Comments welcome.

I supose we hae been here before - remember KK on the steps of SJP remonstrating with the fans about the sale of Cole.

Hoping that the money is used wisely - not Arseshaving

    MOUTINHO
    DERDIYOK
    BURDISSO
    LARSSON
    INLER for me

  • 2 Ryan // Aug 30, 2008 at 0:25

Kev always justifies his actions and restores my faith in the club. I remember when we sold Andy Cole and Keegan had to come out and justify this on the steps of st james park of all places…he then went on to buy players like Ginola and of course Shearer…the bloke knows what hes doing

  • 3 liquid ice // Aug 30, 2008 at 0:27

win today at arsenal dont ya mean?

  • 4 Spyro // Aug 30, 2008 at 0:30

yes, than k you Ed, a new article, hopefully we can keep the discussions on here about NUFC

  • 5 SuperShearer // Aug 30, 2008 at 0:32

I trust KK and think he knows exactly what he is doing. My worry is that we take a horribly long time to tie up deals and we are almost out of time. Of course it is not beyond the realms of possibility that come midnight on Monday we have signed all manner of brilliant and exciting players, with Wise and Co declaring it was the plan all along so as to ensure that other clubs did not snipe as at the last minute, but I just find that hard to swallow. All I will say is that Martin O’Neil has spent a lot of money this summer so the pressure is on him.

  • 6 pete stone // Aug 30, 2008 at 0:32

2-1 to the toon the day

  • 7 BenjiToon // Aug 30, 2008 at 0:33

Let’s not put unreasonable pressure on the lads. Yes, a win would be great but a good performance with some quality and passion is evidence enough that Milner’s departure hasn’t affected the club internally. Even a good draw could be uplifting.

I’ve tried to stay out of the frenzy on here since Milner’s Villa transferwas confirmed. We all had a lot to say before he went but now he IS gone and we must carry on as before. One player out (or in for that matter) does not determine our whole season.

“5.30pm Saturday - Newcastle, guided by a confident and positive Kevin Keegan, are cheered with pride by 1000s of Geordie’s at the Emirates and 100,000s watching in their homes.” That’s the only headline that really matters tomorrow….

…although a couple of signings would be nice too!

  • 8 Spyro // Aug 30, 2008 at 0:33

    agreed SuperShearer

  • 9 james gray // Aug 30, 2008 at 0:38

milner gone, owen to follow either now or jan, im starting to fear the worst, sure, the lads we have signed are looking good, but without another 5 players (half of our squad havent palyed prem footy) we are doomed.
    thanks ashley for fu*k all!
    tightest billionaire in the world.
as for the champ manager lads, get a grip - it wont happen - take a dose of reality!

  • 10 clinta // Aug 30, 2008 at 0:39

WE can go in a different direction?? does that suggest we can buy extra quality, instead of just cover for james then? thought we had money to spend on the right players anyway, so what difference should this sale make?

has been a couple of interesting if typical nufc days, but KK’s right he’ll be judges come monday, that is fair.

  • 11 PDiddy // Aug 30, 2008 at 0:40

After seeing the press conference I am positive we will get the players we need. If there is one thing Keegan cant hide it’s disapointment and he defiantely seemed to be upbeat and excited.
THE MIGHT TOON win 3-1 tomorrow!

  • 12 brutooooon // Aug 30, 2008 at 0:41

yupz i m still disapointted with milner’s departure but we can cure it with 3-4 excellent signings…….its better be quick.

playing at emirates, i wouldn’t gave too much optimism because arsenal is in good form and we might just lose 1-0 or 2-1 and the best would be just a draw…

  • 13 Sloop Jon B // Aug 30, 2008 at 0:41

A little hint from KK’s interview that the transfer money may not be spent in this window.
    Such is life.

I think our squad had a total of 17 when we first came into the Premiership and we did pretty well then.

    Different game now?
    Not when I last checked.

  • 14 Spyro // Aug 30, 2008 at 0:42

its not an issue of money clinta, what i think KK is trying to get at is, Milner offered a certain dimension to our RM, now he has gone, we can replace him with a different kind of player to fill his spot in RM. Yes we could have signed the extra winger anway, but would Milner be happy sitting on the bench when teams like Villa want him in their first team? i doubt it.

  • 15 toon-broon // Aug 30, 2008 at 0:42

i think owen will go before the end of the window, and i think our squad is so thin we will be found wanting againg when the chips are down

  • 16 fostino // Aug 30, 2008 at 0:43

finally a new blog, milner gone lets move on fast, preferably before the window closes, as we need some faces in!!

i have full faith in keegan, if he says it was his decision to let him go, then i repect it!!

12 million for milner is good business if we can find a good replacement!!

i cant see us bringing in 4 or 5 players before monday tho, we’ve had all summer to do so, why leave it so late!! i no at the end of the day, it comes down to players decision, so il be glad to see tuesday morning when we can bomb ahead with our squad without all the constant rumours!!

  • 17 BenjiToon // Aug 30, 2008 at 0:43

PDiddy - you’re right. KK isn’t one for hiding emotions or opinions. He does play the media game a lot more canny than some people think - praises players to boost their price for example. But he can’t totally fake what he feels about something.

On Friday he looked unhappy about losing Milner but not that unhappy. He was convincing when he said it was the right decisions and his optimism about signing players did not seem at all false to me.

    Lets see what happens.

  • 18 Sloop Jon B // Aug 30, 2008 at 0:44

    PDiddy-

Agreed with your observation on KK’s ‘Iron Mask’- I’m sure he’s genuine with what he says otherwise he’d look rather down in the mouth.

  • 19 james gray // Aug 30, 2008 at 0:46

keep the blinkers on lads - and keep deleting my posts admin, anyone with a grasp of realism will see we will be in freefall when owen goes.

  • 20 shearer's right foot // Aug 30, 2008 at 0:47

if keegans confident than im confident
im pleased about this in a way because im a big enrique fan so it looks like he’ll be getting his game more now
i think we’ll see a lot of last minute buisness all over the place(other clubs) due to the lack of activity this transfer window so don’t be too surprised to see a few faces coming in to the toon
personally i want any from skjelbred/inler/burdisso/derdiyok/larsson

  • 21 tommy // Aug 30, 2008 at 0:48

I hope we do get a couple more in, even after hearing what KK has to say, i still have this gut feeling that we wont get anyone in? i’m not to fussed cause from what we have seen so far we do have team spirit and some real quality.
About Barton, i think he is a good player, and hopefully this season KK really gives him a chance to show us the player he can be! I think with KK at the helm, he will knuckle down and work to try and win himself some respect among us as fans and his own teammates and do KK proud for the faith he has in him.

  • 22 BenjiToon // Aug 30, 2008 at 0:48

Fostino - lets not be in too much of a hurry to get to Tuesday! We CAN still sign players to help us out by then. But yes, please lets get back to the thing we all really care about…THE FOOTBALL.

Oh, on Owen’s contract - did anyone notice KK’s comment earlier in the week about the deal having to be right for “both parties”. Reckon there’s been an internal chat and they’ve decided a line that is accpetable t the club.

  • 23 I am 1000 // Aug 30, 2008 at 0:48

I’m convinced that KK wil bring in some good players come Monday because KK wouldn’t get of one of our best players so close to the end so i’m confident, unlike KK to let us down.

  • 24 Sloop Jon B // Aug 30, 2008 at 0:49

    james gray-

when did NUFC and realism ever get to together?

  • 25 clinta // Aug 30, 2008 at 0:50

On Milner I hope he gets the reaction he deserves when he returns to SJP with Villa.

That is one of appreciation for what he put in and applause from the toon army

booes would not be right in this case.

  • 26 toon time // Aug 30, 2008 at 0:50

i ll show my arse in fenwicks window when we sign MOUTINHO DERDIYOK BURDISSO and (most of all) INLER

  • 27 Sloop Jon B // Aug 30, 2008 at 0:51

    this from todays Sun-

NEWCASTLE bad-boy Joey Barton claims Portsmouth will snap him up if the Toon try to get rid of him.

Midfielder Barton is back in the Magpies squad for the first time since being released from jail.

But he is not happy that the club attempted to cut his wages and considered sacking him.

A club insider said: “Joey has told his team-mates Portsmouth will have him if Newcastle don’t want him any more. He is very confident.”

  • 28 BenjiToon // Aug 30, 2008 at 0:53

God, will the rumoursnever stop. The Sun (can’t believe I’m even quoting that rag!) are saying Barton could go to Pompey. Once again the notorious ‘club insider’ said: “Joey has told his team-mates Portsmouth will have him if Newcastle don’t want him any more. He is very confident.”

Doesn’t this kind of nonsense story - surely even Redknapp is not that stupid! - show how mental this window has been? Don’t believe anything over the next couple of days unless its on nufc.co.uk or comes out of KKs mouth.

  • 29 Sloop Jon B // Aug 30, 2008 at 0:53

did Milner have any convictions for assault etc?

he didn’t want to play for the club anymore and that’s fair enough, couldn’t we have chucked Barton in as part of the deal though?

  • 30 Sloop Jon B // Aug 30, 2008 at 0:54

It’s not true until it’s been printed in The Sun!

  • 31 Spyro // Aug 30, 2008 at 0:54

dont believe it guys, it is just a pathetic attempt to get us to boo on him tomorrow, so they can then write about it on sunday.

  • 32 black magpie // Aug 30, 2008 at 0:54

12 mil 4 milner- how much then is martin, arteta, walcott, SWP

anyway i trust kk always have always will

lets concentrate on Arsenal- i think zogs will be given a chance to terrorize aresnal i hope i passes the ball at the right moment- he is still a rough diamond i agree but i feel given has the hammer and chisle

love an attacking mid and striker!! to come in

  • 33 Sloop Jon B // Aug 30, 2008 at 0:56

    JESUS!

    this also from The Sun…..

FITNESS fanatic Lisa Appleton was reunited with thrilled hubby-to-be, Mario Marconi, after becoming the eleventh housemate to leave the Big Brother house.

In one of the closest evictions in Big Brother history, Loopy Lisa received 52.6 per cent of the public votes in a nail-biting head-to-head against Aussie minx, Sara.

    REALLY SORRY.

  • 34 fostino // Aug 30, 2008 at 0:58

    re: benjitoon

dont get me wrong mate, im looking forward to the rollarcoaster ride of emotions like you for the next few days, i love the deadline day and seeing what it crops up for all the clubs, its gonna be a fun few days, but it wont be good for the heart!!

i agree, i do hope we get a few new faces in before tuesday…..simply because we badly need them, our squad is too bare.

also i hope keegan realises he hasnt got rid of all the deadwood jusst yet, there’s still a certain few high earning bench warmers like ameobi, smith, geremi (he’s not too bad tho) and even duff (showing glimpses of his old self but is on very high wages i imagine)!!

  • 35 Gazzatoon // Aug 30, 2008 at 0:58

well firstly i have faith in king kevand im sure we will definatly bring in a quality midfielder and maybe a striker and left back

as for beating arsenal, cannot see the im afriad. Can see us getting hit with a dose of reality and going down 3 or 4 - 0. hope im wrong tho! just cant see us scoring with only owen upfront against gallas and toure.

  • 36 Sloop Jon B // Aug 30, 2008 at 0:59

Gooners won’t fancy fancy playing us today- despite what th southern based media put about.

Remember we were going to get tonked at Old Trafford, and have two of the best CB’s in Europe.

Arsenal….. they don’t. Although we did try to sign Senderos apparently. That would’ve helped them if we had.

    Is Nasri fit?

  • 37 fostino // Aug 30, 2008 at 1:05

no way are the gunners gonna thump us, i can see us nicking a point!!! not a big fan of 5.30 kick-offs tho, however neither are arsenal going on last weeks performance!!!

  • 38 Leo // Aug 30, 2008 at 1:05

yes dont boo barton when he plays tomorrow it will just give the journo’s ammunition

  • 39 Spyro // Aug 30, 2008 at 1:10

exactly Leo, everyone needs to see this for what it is. The rags are counting on us booing Joey tomorrow as it will give their lazy arses a story for Sunday. This is just their cheap ploy to ensure that happens. It is no coincidence that this “insider” contacted them the same day as our match.

  • 40 ziad // Aug 30, 2008 at 1:10

lets leave transfers to KK after all thats his job!!! Lets hope for the best support the lads ! I think kk is confident then we must have good replacements ! And on milner good bye and good luck…

  • 41 fostino // Aug 30, 2008 at 1:11

i doudt barton will be starting tomorrow

    given
    beye
    colo
    taylor
    enrique
    jonas
    butt
    guthrie
    N’zogbia
    owen
duff (if might be still injured)

  • 42 little willie // Aug 30, 2008 at 1:12

I heard we put a 4th bid in for Warnock and the club are confident of getting him this time.

  • 43 little willie // Aug 30, 2008 at 1:12

    Beye is injured, fostino.

  • 44 Spyro // Aug 30, 2008 at 1:12

Ed please do not make an article about this Joey Barton nonsense…or at least wait until after the game

  • 45 fostino // Aug 30, 2008 at 1:13

if duff is still K/O, then i suppose barton is a good shout, or smith could start up front

  • 46 Tom_Toon // Aug 30, 2008 at 1:16

Where does it say Beye is injured?

Ameobi isnt in the squad + Cacapa, Geremi, Lualua, Carroll, Duff, Martins, Viduka are all injured.

  • 47 Spyro // Aug 30, 2008 at 1:17

if barton does start, which i doubt he will, i would be tempted to play him in the gerrard role. between Owen and Butt and Guthrie

  • 48 fostino // Aug 30, 2008 at 1:17

    re: little willie

is he? where did you hear this? i heard rumours about achillis trouble but i didnt no if it was true

  • 49 Spyro // Aug 30, 2008 at 1:19

Geremi AND Lua Lua are both injured…so what is our likely starting 11

we aint got enough midfielders to play 5 in midfield (unless Barton starts), and not enough experienced strikers to play 2 up front.

Maybe Nile or Donaldson will get a shot

  • 50 Phil // Aug 30, 2008 at 1:21

it is impossible not to be worried. we have sold one of our best players and there is only 3 days to go to get a replacement AND the extra players we needed anyway.

Even if we do get players in, there is no guarantee that they will adapt to the premiership/newcastle.

i guess only time will tell, but i for one amvery worried

  • 51 Gazzatoon // Aug 30, 2008 at 1:22

spyro totally agree with that, i think barton will improve us so much when hes finally back playing! I also hope noone boo’s him as even tho he is a knob head off the field he’s still a newcastle player on it so we should get behind him!

  • 52 Tom_Toon // Aug 30, 2008 at 1:25

Spyro - Our team will be:

    Given
    Beye-Taylor-Coloccini-Enrique
    Jonas-Butt-Guthrie-N’Zogbia
    Smith-Owen

Subs: Harper, Bassong, Tozer, Edgar, Barton, Ranger, Donaldson.

Thats the whole squad named. Ameobi isn’t in the squad at all, Geremi is but apparently he is injured according to BBC.

  • 53 Tom_Toon // Aug 30, 2008 at 1:26

    However i’d play:

    Given
    Beye-Bassong-Coloccini-Enrique
    Jonas-Barton-Guthrie-N’Zogbia
    Owen-Ranger/Donaldson

Butt instead of Barton if he isnt fully fit.

  • 54 Gazzatoon // Aug 30, 2008 at 1:27

Phil there is noway keegan would have let milner go if he did not have a deadcert replacement lined up. we will sign players just be patient as were bound to be waiting for all the big clubs to make moves so that it frees up the players we want to buy

  • 55 Spyro // Aug 30, 2008 at 1:27

oh crap! i forgot about Smith…sigh

  • 56 fostino // Aug 30, 2008 at 1:28

i agree phil, i heard someone comment earlier today that this was a great day for the toon in that we sold milner for 12 million

the way i look at it, we’ve sold a player that so far has been a key in our starting 11, and now we can barely name a team for tomorrow!!

i agree 12 million is good business for milner but we need players in, not out, we shouldnt be a selling club!! maybe in january when we have a few additions to the squad settled in, we could have cashed in on milner but at the moment i am abit worried

however, id like to be proven wrong and for kk to bring in a few faces before tuesday, im sure he must have milners replacement lined up!!

  • 57 little willie // Aug 30, 2008 at 1:28

I think Keegan will play Jonas and N’Zogbia off Owen, a midfield of Butt, Guthrie and Coloccini and a back four of Enrique, Taylor, Bassong and Edgar.

  • 58 I Made 1000 // Aug 30, 2008 at 1:29

this is big rick btw lets make another 1000 lol

  • 59 little willie // Aug 30, 2008 at 1:30

Milner is average and was everything keegan doesn’t want in an attacking player, Keegan’s attacks are based around pace and flair Milner had neither.

  • 60 Gazzatoon // Aug 30, 2008 at 1:31

little willie u make me chuckle! why we we play our best defender colo in centre mid????????? it will b guti butt gutrie and zog with smith and owen upfront

  • 61 Spyro // Aug 30, 2008 at 1:33

agree with willie on milner…i also have a hunch little willie is tom toon

  • 62 little willie // Aug 30, 2008 at 1:33

I don’t think Smith will be risked as Keegan is still hoping to get rid of him.

  • 63 fostino // Aug 30, 2008 at 1:34

    re: little willie

a good call on the team selection and a good point little willie!!

however i think against arsenal, kk will want the experience of colo in the back four!!

    kk knows what he’s doing

  • 64 Tom_Toon // Aug 30, 2008 at 1:37

Spyro - Thas funny because i think he is Nando.

  • 65 fostino // Aug 30, 2008 at 1:38

kk surely not thinking of getting rid of more players before tuesday besides ameobi, however i wouldnt mind seeing smith off the wage list sooner rather the later!!

  • 66 I Made 1000 // Aug 30, 2008 at 1:39

    haha

  • 67 Tom_Toon // Aug 30, 2008 at 1:40

We got youngsters better than Ameobi and Smith put together x100 so it doesn’t matter greatly.

  • 68 little willie // Aug 30, 2008 at 1:42

I wouldn’t be surprised to see Nile Ranger make his debut at some stage today, I’ve heard Keegan rates the lad higher than Carroll.

  • 69 little willie // Aug 30, 2008 at 1:44

    Tom_Toon - That’s funny as I think Spyro is HATE_PRAWN_SANDWICHES

  • 70 Bill F // Aug 30, 2008 at 1:46

I think the kids are going to get a baptism of fire, not the best way to start a season (despite our early success). If it comes off, great. If not then Nero had better put his fiddle down and get the cheque book out pronto.
If by some miracle there are signings in the pipeline and it is not obvious at this moment. Then the international break (I assume there is to be one) is fortutious to give them a chance to settle. I aint holding my breath though.

  • 71 Tom_Toon // Aug 30, 2008 at 1:47

little willie - I think he has taken a fancy to Ranger, he has only played once for the u18’s, scored then he is in both the cov squad, on the bench and now in arsenal squad and he’s only been here a few weeks!

    He definitely rates him.

  • 72 Leo // Aug 30, 2008 at 1:51

well little willie was right about milner before anything was in the papers so maybe he knows something

we will see tomorrow if the teamsheet says

    given

    edgar bassong taylor enrique

    guthrie colo butt

    jonas nzogbia

    owen

  • 73 welsh toon // Aug 30, 2008 at 2:00

right guys every one has there own opinion on milner and i got mine, he was a good lad with the rite attitiude and would run all day, but his crossing wasnt up 2 much and he didnt score enough, we got good money 4 him and i trust the main man 2 bring sum good players 2 the club trust me!!!! Howay the lads!!

  • 74 little willie // Aug 30, 2008 at 2:01

That’s just a guess from me that team, Leo.

All I’ve heard is Beye is unlikely to feature because of injury, hopefully he makes it because I don’t think Edgar is the required standard for the Premiership in any position.

  • 75 samvil // Aug 30, 2008 at 2:03

I read Roma just snapped up Jeremy Menez from Monaco, maybe the most promising player in French football.

Why weren’t we after him? A right winger with both pace and flair and in the right age (20).

Maybe too lightweight for the PL, but not any more than Lennon and SWP.

  • 76 Tom_Toon // Aug 30, 2008 at 2:09

    Menez isn’t at all lightweight.

  • 77 samvil // Aug 30, 2008 at 2:17

    So why weren’t we interested?

From what I’ve seen Menez looks great.

BTW, really hope the lads can put in a great performance tomorrow, similar to that at OT, and earn a point. That would feel so great!!!

  • 78 Tom_Toon // Aug 30, 2008 at 2:20

    Who knows.

He does have quite a bad njury record and it was a gamble for Roma to sign him as he was just recovering from an operation.

  • 79 fostino // Aug 30, 2008 at 2:23

what about a sneaky bid for lennon, he might be alright under keegans guidance!!

    just a suggestion

  • 80 mr_flibbles // Aug 30, 2008 at 2:30

So who do you think these hot iron signings are going to be then? I hear Sjelbred mentioned every other day and yet there is no video footage of him playing so nobody knows what sort of player he is. What we really lack is goals from midfield, we have lacked it for a long long time, I think since Robert, Speed and Solano we have nobody who can score.

I think maybe we wont get many goals from Jonas but his defensive qualities are worth having him in the team. He probably stops several goals being scored anyway and in that he is very valuable. Out of all of our midfielders only Butt has a decent shot on him and as he plays deeper he only ever maybe has 1 shot at goal from distance per game.-usually blocked but a good hit none the less.

Barton maybe has the most goals in his game and the onus will be on him a bit more than the others to get some goals.

  • 81 Tom_Toon // Aug 30, 2008 at 2:35

I think N’Zogbia would score 5-8 goals a season if he was consistently in the team and in midfield.

  • 82 none4TOON // Aug 30, 2008 at 2:37

if milner n emre r sold why r we still keeping hold of Smith n Shola? it’s unlikely that smith can improve or get even just a single game when ANY of our strikers is 75% fit, and his value gonna go down for sure as his age is against him. needless to say anything abt shola i guess. while we may need a striker i’d say a AM with ball skills and creativity is the 1st priority, someone in the mould of whom we r after like Boussoufa or Modric or Arda or Aimar. a young strong attacking LB is good e.g. Pocognoli or Monzon. if we get filled in these two positions we can dominate any game even w/o a striker, like the French squad did b4!

  • 83 none4TOON // Aug 30, 2008 at 2:47

we hv goalscoring midfielders in Zog. Duff n Barton’s record prove that they can score from midfield. and we can expect Butt n Jonas to score a couple times a season. Guthrie can only improve. what we lack in them is not the goalscoring abilities, but rather space created and accurate passing that can be improved by slotting a keyman in the midfield to pace n concert the attack, until the exisiting bunch of attacking midfielders can really gel together n act as a efficient unit.

The papers are seeing a steely-eyed and pragmatic manager in Keegan now, waving goodbye to Milner as he looks to bring in 3 more like Jonas, Colo and Danny Boy.
They said he was flaky and wouldn’t last ythe course. They played the ‘I’d luv it’ tapes over and over. After ridiculing him for his ‘failed soccer circus’ and that he hadn’t watched a live match in 3 years, it seems KK is not about to walk out on Wise and Ashley, is not afraid of ‘London Rule’ and he has a definite picture in mind of where he wants to take the Toon and how he intends to do it. And Keegan is playing the papers like and auld fiddle when he wants to.

In short, he may be an even better, more mature manager than he has ever been and the Toon management set-up with the owner and other executives could just be working out very well.
    How ‘WOW’ is that?

  • 85 Phil // Aug 30, 2008 at 5:36

I wish I could be that optimistic.

I’m not with the whole “we’ll see on monday” brigade either.

We might bring in 3 players before then. Will they be any good? Will they adapt to the premiership? Will they settle in Newcastle? There are a lot of doubts even IF we get the players in.

I can’t believe that Keegan choose to let Milner go. 12 million is a good price, but only if you can get a replacement in. Is there a player with premiership experience, milners age and ability that is willing to come to Newcastle? I hope so, but I don’t know who it is.

mr_flibbles, there are videos of Skjelbred on the net, this is a nasty one .. 2 broken bones

    http://tw.youtube.com/watch?v=efWHcYQdzwg

he is a toon fan though

  • 87 Estranged // Aug 30, 2008 at 6:30

u know wutz the wow signing? I went to bed yesterday after comment 187 on the previous story….jeez it has over 1038 comments. Now thats ‘WOW!’

Anyways can we leave milner out of the topic and look to the future. Hez done, finished. Since when do we give a sh1t about villa players…

n Tom Toon i agree with u that bassong shud line up with colo. They look so much more promising than tayls. Hez also a left sided centerback which is awesome with colo on da right. The 5 yr pairing shud be bassong n colo.

  • 88 Drago // Aug 30, 2008 at 6:49

ffs Jonas is right winger… Zog on the left and we have much better squad than that with Milner, who cant do anything apart running… Get J.Barton in who is one of the best midfield players. K.Keegan knows what hes doing.

  • 89 craig chisholm // Aug 30, 2008 at 7:06

i think owen will be a manure player by the close of the window.

  • 90 nick // Aug 30, 2008 at 7:26

    LEO - that’s a great line up.

Barton is upset that we considered cutting his wages and sacking him. My god Barton is unbelievable. We did neither, the ungrateful little …………! A lot of clubs would and should have kicked him out.

Small squad or not, I would still love to see the back of Smith, Duff, Barton , Geremi and Owen (if he keeps dicking us around.) Add to that the aging and increasingly mistake making Butt!

I really hope Atouba is not incoming. I would be seriously underwhelmed. Malouda only on a loan.

Insua, Derdiyok, Trejo, De Jong / Inler / Larsson, Arda / Schweinsteiger would be great. Not fussed about a wow signing.

  • 91 Mark // Aug 30, 2008 at 7:37

Keegan said we need to stay positive. I am. Iam positive we will get hammered today and positive we are going backwards not progressing. Wow signings on the way my arse. A fullback from Guinea is a great start. Owen is next to leave and we will be playing will playing Geremi and Shola up front. Iam feeling very positively ill

  • 92 scotty // Aug 30, 2008 at 7:42

I would be totally gutted if i really thought we were after players like Atouba. He was a Spuds reject - PLEASE NOOOOOOOOOOO!!!

  • 93 Mikey24 // Aug 30, 2008 at 7:54

Think KK is enjoying the 4-3-3 thing (when his strikers are fit anyway) last season we were banging in the goals with this but leakin em like hell, atleast this season the defense is way better so I have faith in the King to sort us out.
I think Ill only be worrying if our results start going down the pan, until then its TOON ARMY all the way!
Just setting off for Arsenal now I cant wait!!!

  • 94 Ericles // Aug 30, 2008 at 7:56

It looks like we will be signing Zayette but hope Derdiyok and Skjelbred come too. Any chance. Not Malouda as he is not an NUFC type player at all. Just because he may be available from Chelski does not make him any good. Atouba was not good enough for another load of Londoners - Spurs. Therefore not us. Still think Larsson as squad back up for a season would be useful. Today is the day we play at
(H)emeroids Stadium. Howay the lads - lets give Arse and All the shits!

  • 95 Bobby Ollox // Aug 30, 2008 at 7:58

This article really demonstrates the unique position KK has with most fans - we absolutely trust his integrity. No way would he , or indeed could he , risk that trust .

What he says is what he believes. and I am right behind him 100%.

  • 96 Tom4Nufc // Aug 30, 2008 at 8:09

I have no sources, no reason to suggest this apart from I just have a feeling that we will get Ivan Rakitic from FC Shalke 04.

  • 97 Waddl,s mullet // Aug 30, 2008 at 8:10

FFS You have more chance of signing ronaldo and rooney before monday than getting inler!!
He signed a new five year deal yesterday…..
    read my posts you goons

  • 98 ERIC CRAMMY MAG // Aug 30, 2008 at 8:17

kev i am not worried either i cant believe we got that much for milner nice lad truth is he was just not good enough if you want to break into the top six

  • 99 51times // Aug 30, 2008 at 8:18

    Tom4Nufc - Wouldn’t mind Rakitic, like.

  • 100 Ericles // Aug 30, 2008 at 8:20

Checked on Atouba and various sources describe him as flamboyant, quality skills but temperamental. Likes the middle finger gesture apparently. He is supposed to be a left back (but can play left wing) and we do need cover at LB.

  • 101 wigaz // Aug 30, 2008 at 8:29

Trust in KK lads! good article ED. I dont think he would of let milner leave unless we already had a replacement lined up for him. Also i belive milner put in transfer request once he heard who was coming as he knew he’d have more chance of 1st team football at villa.

However we are down to bare bones today, i think team will be:
    =======Given=====
    beye==taylor==colo==enrique
    barton==butt==guthrie==jonas
    =======Zogs===owen====

We have to play some1 with Owen, if you play him upfront on his own you might as well not play him at all.
Whoever is going today i hope they dont Boo barton, he’s our player regardless of whats happened & i hope he has a gr8 game!
    Toon 2 Arse 1. Owen & Barton.
Barton Man of the match. Now that would give those fu#kin journos somethin to write about! LMAO!

  • 102 Tom4Nufc // Aug 30, 2008 at 8:40

    I hope it will be:
    Given
    Beye Taylor Colocinni Enrique
    Jonas Butt Guthrie Barton
    Zoggers
    Owen

  • 103 Tom4Nufc // Aug 30, 2008 at 8:40

this is coz barton can play on the left, and did at the end of last season, very well.

  • 104 Ericles // Aug 30, 2008 at 8:41

Nothing wrong with dreams Wigaz - especially when they could come true. All the way with KK, howay!

  • 105 ANDYGLOSTOON // Aug 30, 2008 at 8:41

DONT BELIVE THE SUN S*** ABOUT BARTON, ITS A SMEAR CAMPAIGN CANT ANYONE SEE!

  • 106 toondoc // Aug 30, 2008 at 8:44

Its bolloc@s and I am sick of lack of splashly from ashley
the whole thing is just making me wish I;d not renewed for this season

  • 107 Shot Bru! // Aug 30, 2008 at 9:18

I reckon the first team is starting to get a settled look to it, as long as Enrique plays @ LB with Zog in front, with Beye and Jonas on the other side, we look quite threatening. Colo brings a calmness to our defending, which is what we’re gonna need to have @ the Emirates tonight. I hope KK buys a couple of CM before mon night as we are looking a bit light in that dept, even though Guthrie has looked pretty good. I gotta say though that Pogrybnyak looked a cracking player last night for Zenit, much more effective than Arshavin would be in the EPL, 1st time i’ve seen him play.

  • 108 Ian // Aug 30, 2008 at 9:40

I was 100% behind Bobby Robson and I am 100% behind KK.

Now he is talking I feel more upbeat, I think Vetere is ok, anyone else up there I do not trust and really am not bothered if they are there or not.

KK understands how he must protect his word and integrity it is the second most valuable thing he has behind his team management skills, others could do with learning those skills from him.

I am convinced there is a good fit striker joining the team, I agree about the other positions needing strengthening, it lloks like players are going to fill those positions, however with the team we now have and a very relaible decent striker I am sure we can climb the table and easily end up higher than last year, without one it is nothing but a gamble on fitness.

KK seems so confident and unconcerned about the Owen situation that I am sure a good striker is on the way and possibly another maybe young one or back up.

I do not care if it isnt a big name, just a decent player for me would do, who stays fit, someone to assist Martins when the others cant play.

  • 109 Will // Aug 30, 2008 at 9:43

“We can maybe slightly go in a different direction.”

Exactly. N’Zogbia on the left and Guitierrez on the right.

    PARTY ON!

  • 110 SS // Aug 30, 2008 at 10:12

it’s not a bad news for milner departure.Spiderman can play as a right wing,i think it’s the best position he can be shown. And N ‘zog can play at the left wing ,Jose can play at the left back, that’s what we saw how good we can have while the player play with the right position at the day away at conventry.we would expect we can have a brand new magpies is coming!

  • 111 SouthernMag // Aug 30, 2008 at 10:18

We’ve signed Ignacio Gonzalez from Valencia

    http://www.elpais.com.uy/08/08/30/pdepor_366852.asp

  • 112 SouthernMag // Aug 30, 2008 at 10:22

Just to add - it is a one-year loan deal. He had his medical in Valencia. Maybe someone knows anything about him, because i haven’t heard of him.

  • 113 StevieA // Aug 31, 2008 at 13:50

SouthernMag - Gonzalez is a Uraguayan international. His position is Attacking Midfield. He has a record of something like 47 goals in 110-120 games so a pretty good scoring record, he is a hard worker and very skillful too. Valencia have too many foreign players so we get him on loan, sounds like a Beardsley type to me and we need someone like Beardo that’s for sure.
