Newcastle were never in this game, from the time Arsenal started it like a steam train, and Newcastle just couldn’t get the ball in the first half, and looked to be overwhelmed at times.
- On the positive side of things this game showed how much we are behind the top four teams, and we are nowhere near them. That may help Ashley start to move for the players in the next 40 hours or so of the transfer window. Please do!
- We refuse to over react too much to this result, because Arsenal were at their best and not many team would have come away with anything yesterday. And that goes for the top four. However, if this had been Aston Villa, Everton, Tottenham or another team fighting for position beneath the top four, we would be worried.
- Difficult game for Michael Owen to come back, but he still looked sharp and could have had two goals in the first half. One when he was ready to tap the ball in and Shola somehow managed to get completely in his way and the chance was lost. And then a looping header just before half time was well saved by Almunia.
- Shola Ameobi again showed he seems all washed up and just not good enough to be in this Newcastle side – and he did Newcastle no favors by his display, because it will be more difficult to sell him, while he’s just not performing.
How come he failed a medical at Ipswich yet played a full 90 minutes yesterday? Interesting.
- We did have some good performances with Shay Given once again brilliant in goal. Shay has got over his nightmare two seasons, and is playing as well as ever – if he keeps this form up he’ll win the Premier League best goalkeeper award – for the 3rd time.
Poor Steven Harper – so close yet so far, for the local lad completely dedicated to the Newcastle cause.
- Coloccini kept the defense together, especially in the first frantic 20 minutes, and if this player can play every game for Newcastle this season, as he did for Deportivo last season, our defense will be a lot better than last season – a great signing by Kevin.
- Jonas Gutierrez also had another good game and worked his proverbial socks off, both on attack and defense. Think my son Neil could be right when he says Jonas will become a Newcastle legend.
- We think in two years Newcastle will be a lot better and hopefully it will be a toss-up between Arsenal and Newcastle, as to which team plays the best football to watch. But yesterday Arsenal; didn’t just play good football they destroyed Newcastle – let’s at least be honest about it.
- And wasn’t the TV commentary just ridiculous. It was Arsenal this, and Arsenal that, and look at Arsenal do this, and see how Newcastle aren’t as good when they do that.
Yes, Arsenal are a good side, but their name precedes them too much – and quite honestly if it has been 1-0 at half time, Newcastle were still in with a chance.
The commentary, especially from the support guy, was just too biased towards the London side.
Well isn’t that a surprise.
- But we’ll get our points from the other 15 teams outside the top 4. And the next game is in a couple of weeks against Hull City, at home, and they were hammered at home 5-0 by Wigan yesterday.
If we don’t get 3 points in that game then we should be worried, very worried.
Comments welcome.

Comment #50The commentary from the “support guy” was not only biased towards Arsenal, he also had a pop at the club regarding Michael Owen, saying that Newcastle were a very poor team and that Owen should leave the club if he wanted to score goals and keep his England place. Even the main commentator was embarrassed and quickly pointed out that Newcastle had injuries to key players. Setanta should sack the ****hole.

Comment #60WE ARE THE BEST TEAM OUTSIDE THE TOP 4. ONLY EVERTON IS CLOSE TO US. ALL WE NEED IS A PLAYMAKER AND A LEFT BACK. WE NEED AN ASHARVIN KIND OF PLAYER THAT CAN PLAY THE FREE ROLE.

Comment #61How many more times do we have to see this. How many more times till more then one or two players contribute.
Yesterday, Given and Jonas carried the team, but did so in vain.
Given worked his socks off, he was under seige for the entire game, it was shooting practice. He had no chance with either of the 3 goals. A top class penalty, it could’nt have been hit better, Shay guessed the right way and all..(I honestly think he’s after getting better at penalties looking at that) it was just perfectly slotted into the corner. As for the other two..awful defending, both were rockets that he saw too late, and he’d know chance with either. He kept us in the game though, without him who knows what the score would have been..7 or 8-0. Is truly, *touch wood* back to his very best, if not better then he ever was.
As for Spidey..I can’t get over how quickly he’s adapted. He’s only been here for 5 seconds and he’s been outstanding. The runs he was making, the decisions, passes..etc, all excellent, but like wee Given, it was in vain. Worked his socks off completely but the rest of the team just didn’t give two shits.
They just spent their time ball watching, giving the ball away, bad shooting, bad passing, sloppy, bad work. Just a big massive let down.
I suppose you could put it down to being drained, and we do have a small squad, that’s common knowledge, but it still doesn’t explain why our 2 busiest players in all our games so far were again the best.
Given and Jonas are a class above.
As for the ref..he didn’t do us much favors now did he.
The commentators, they’ve seemed to get peoples backs up a wee bit from what they said. Now I don’t know, maybe it’s because I’m used to hearing stuff like this..

Comment #65To be honest looking at the table is depressing. Boro who i cannot stand because of their fickle fans and claiming to be top dogs in the North east are sitting in 5th spot. If Sunderland win today we will be bottom of the pile. I thought KK said he would concentrate on signings first and then talk about Owens contract. I can’t see anything but dead ends at the toon atm.

Comment #70agreed happy toon, not about being the best outiside the top four, but
given – best goaly in the prem
colo – very assured centre back
bassong – young, learning and good a header of the ball
enrique – good, solid left back who can pick a pass.
beye – everyone knows what he can do after last year
the midfield has nzog, a quality winger, jonas, need i say more, and guthrie, who is a neat little passer. just need a creater though.
upfront owen would get in any team and martins would outside the top four, arsenal wanted gim aswell.
we need a arteta type player and we will be alright.
