Sky Reporting Owen Offered New Improved Contract

August 31st, 2008 · 160 Comments

It’s looking more and more like Newcastle United have indeed offered their captain Michael Owen an improved contract, to stay another three years at the club.

Michael Owen - yes - I’ve got a new contract

Indeed a Newcastle spokesman is quoted in reputable news channels, such as Sky Sports, that Michael has been offered a new contract.

A Newcastle United spokesman is quoted as saying:

“Newcastle United can confirm that captain Michael Owen has been offered an extended and improved three-year contract.”

“The proposed terms of the new deal include an increased salary for Michael and demonstrate the club’s commitment to keeping him.”

“The club hopes that this enhanced contract offer will keep him at St James’ Park.”

We were dubious this morning of this report until the club said something, and usually they report these things on the official web-site, and there’s nothing on the site.

But this may be an accurate report and if it is, we think that’s great. Michael Owen is probably not worth £120K/week because of his play on the field the last three years.

However, we think he is worth the money overall, because he is the face of Newcastle United, just like Alan Shearer was before him. Not to mention Kevin has already pointed to him as being his key player, and he is now captain of the club, and doing very well in that position.

The Americans don’t know too much about football (soccer) but when you mentioned Alan Shearer to them, they knew who he was and most knew he played for Newcastle United - and if you mentioned Newcastle they knew, at least, that’s who Alan played for. They also are very aware of Newcastle Brown Ale, which is one of the most popular beers over here.   :D

If this is true on Michael’s contract, this will be an improvement on his current contract, and it will make Michael an even richer young man, but he’ll be worth every penny if he can score goals the way Alan Shearer.

So we are very pleased about this, as will Kevin Keegan - if it is true.

Comments welcome.

Worth it as we wont splash out huge money on a striker only a creative mid ;)

  • 2 Marguerite // Aug 31, 2008 at 14:19

Talking of offers, just heard that Zayette is NOT joining us he is going to another club and will sign within the next couple of hours according to an announcement on Sky; they did not name the club but presume it is Everton. Oh dear!

  • 3 beyethegreat // Aug 31, 2008 at 14:21

we need a creative mid is nacho good enough

  • 4 G // Aug 31, 2008 at 14:23

Lennon is a done deal apparently and Diego is the “wow” signing, thats what is coming out of the club.

    Yeeah, great, hope he signs…

Anyone else think that Berbatov may sign for Newcastle?

I have a sneaky suspicion he might you know…

  • 7 Darryl // Aug 31, 2008 at 14:26

They also reported that Zayette wont be coming to newcastle.

Not u again, you get on the Chronicle site and you said Lennon was a done deal on there mate.

  • 9 Pete // Aug 31, 2008 at 14:27

Is this all part of our new wage budget reduction policy?

  • 10 ToonDaft // Aug 31, 2008 at 14:27

lol, i was in California in February and was amazed with Broon Ale’s popularity - was all over, advertisements and all sorts - they sell it in a miniature bottle however, like three-quarters of a pint - bit bizarre

  • 12 stormywaters // Aug 31, 2008 at 14:28

Where has the info on Lennon & Diego come from…haven’t seen that anywhere is it just rumour?

  • 13 STEVEYO // Aug 31, 2008 at 14:28

Yet again all the papers report that Owen has turned down a one year reduced salary offer and suddenly the truth emerges from NUFC. How much more convincing do our supporters need before they understand that a prolonged attempt is being made to undermine everything good that is going on at NUFC.Sadly I think all this negative reporting and blatsnt lie telling is having an adverse effect on our attempts to sign good quality players as they seem to believe that the place is unstable.

  • 14 graeme // Aug 31, 2008 at 14:28

The question has to be “Why would MO want a new contract at SJP”??

He can see out his contract, sort out his final club in January, walk away at the end of the season and bank a substantial “Signing On” fee.

He will have no problem finding a club who have a demonstrated ambition to achieve, who are bringing in new players to try and make inroads towards silverware and european competition.

If you were in his position, why stay at SJP??

Its a shocking thing to have to think about, but at this moment in time, its the reality of Newcastle United Football Club. My heart bleeds.

If you turn out to be telling the truth you will be a top man to quite a few people. On here and the Chronicle site but if you are spouting shat then i suggest you keep ya head doon for a while hehehe.

  • 24 Luke // Aug 31, 2008 at 14:32

The fact is we’ve shown our ambition to keep a player like Owen. The club can’t win here I feel. They offer big player wages and the media / fans say it’s disgraceful, they don’t and people say we lack ambition. We MUST keep Owen. He will be so important this season, even if he does leave.

  • 25 G // Aug 31, 2008 at 14:33

I have been told that Lennon is at advanced stages, they are trying to do a deal for Diego but i myself don’t expect it to happen but they are in talks.

Then Krul is about to leave for Feyenoord. Sentanta sports and Sky Sports are taking the piss out of us fans. These rumours have to end soon. Hurry up the deadline.

  • 36 The Entertainers // Aug 31, 2008 at 14:38

I can understand Lennon being a Keegan player. He is very direct and is still improving, like Milner.

Lennon needs a change of clubs, he appears to becoming stale and if he ends up here, i wouldnt be too disappointed. However i dont think we would have moved forward a great deal from where we were with Milner in the team.

    Lets see !

Toon Daft (22) as I said earlier, announced on Sky about 15 minutes ago by David Craig (looks like he is at one of the grounds in the NE.

    Our wow signing - Owen

  • 48 Toon1978 // Aug 31, 2008 at 14:41

    G

IN YOUR HONEST OPINION who do you think will be the players coming to SJP?

  • 49 Michael12 // Aug 31, 2008 at 14:42

I agree with Graeme on this topic. I would have Michael Owen stay but as footballer who believes he is worth £120k a week he clearly highly rates himself so much so that he would also believe he should be playing in the champions league.

Also England positions are not guaranteed Champs league football is a necessity for Owen who is not getting any younger, Newcastle are not challenging for European places, nor does our transfer activity suggest we want to get there.

Liverpool may take him seeing as they could splash out 20 million on Keane, they would accept Owen on a free any day. We should just be pragmatic about it. We saw this week Milner from nothing request a transfer.

  • 50 ToonDaft // Aug 31, 2008 at 14:42

i also think that berbatov might be our WOW signing because:
-his transfer saga to man utd seem not going anywhere.
-he is a big NUFC fan, he wear nufc shirt with shearer 9 name at his back….

Diego and Lennon? i would say thats a DOUBLE WOOWWWW

  • 57 toon lad // Aug 31, 2008 at 14:45

ANDYGLOSTOON -THERE IS NO POINT DREAMING WHEN ITS NOT GOING TO COME TRUE

  • 58 Edd Case // Aug 31, 2008 at 14:46

Mitch - I just get that feeling that BERBATOV, being a lifelong Newcastle fan and sick of life at Spurs, MAY end up just being the WOW signing.

I don’t know, he probably only wants to go to Man Utd but I would bet my mortgage that Keegan will want him and he is the level the board etc will be aiming for.

I meean, if you never go in for players like Berbatov, Coloccini etc, you never get them and it shows a lack of ambition.

As Berbatov is a lifelong fan and if his agent says to him, “look, Newcastle aren’t quite on the Man Utd level yet, but you’re a fan and you could help make them great, like Man Utd” - if that conversation EVER happened and IF Berbatov is a player with hunger and not just money driven (even though we’d probably pay him more than Man Utd) then I think we stand a chance of getting him - a big chance.

  • 59 Ross // Aug 31, 2008 at 14:46

chelsea are just knocking the ball about and spurs have 10 men in their box. i genuinly dont see what all the fuss is about with them!
as for chelsea, big phil has them playing like a different team compared to last season. some of their passing movements are lovely, they’re actually an attractive team to watch now.

    OWEN REJECTS TOON OFFER.

Then it will go on to say Liverpool.Everton and Man utd all want to sign Owen on a cut prise deal of 2 million. The southern press will love it lol.

  • 66 sirjasontoon // Aug 31, 2008 at 14:49

I think our chances of signing big players are slim,I think Ashley did say the wow signing and Kegan did say “24 hr signing”.

I just feel that I am being taken for a fool by the Toon…investment in the squad has been awful since Mike took over.

  • 67 Tom // Aug 31, 2008 at 14:49

Where i s the link about Zayatte? Or Krul? Until we see proper links, from nufc.co.uk etc its not 100% accurate. Hell the day before it happened, SSN reported SWP would not be going to Man City. Look how that turned out.

When Zayette signs for someone else, I’ll believe it.

When Martins is fit and the Duke is fit (or replaced by Derdiyok) Owen could drop back into that midfield role he filled so well last year. Its a bit more direct than a classic creative midfield role in the sense of a string-puller but he did well in it and we know it can work. At 120k per week he has to play and Martins and the Duke are too good to leave out, so where will your AM fit in?

I think tomorrow we are all going to be very disappointed. Obviously the club are trying like mad to do something at the moment. However why wasn’t more done earlier in the summer.

I really feel for Keegan - the guy deserves so much more then this. At the moment I only think he is sticking around for people like you and me…. the fans. Currently I feel very unatease with Mike Ashley.

Seriously now, I get it must be good sitting in with the fans but for christ sake man! Yesterday should have been a PR show, the Emirates - full of agents. Get your face in the boxes and smooth talk them. You can down beers for the rest of the season…. well at least up to Jan!

  • 92 micepie // Aug 31, 2008 at 14:56

I do feel Owen is worth it - providing he stays reasonably fit - because he makes the difference (and probably would have scored yesterday had Amoebi not got in the way…not that it would have affected the result, but it’s an example how Owen is often the man most likely).

About the Lennon rumour, I can see the point in it now and that it may happen. When we had Milner I didn’t see why we should be going for Lennon but believe he would add quite a lot to the side now.

  • 93 RobB // Aug 31, 2008 at 14:57

Owen hasn’t signed yet. I heard that the stumbling block was the 3 year deal. He wanted 5 years. Taylor and Colo have 5 years. That probs accounts for the increased pay.

  • 94 toon lad // Aug 31, 2008 at 14:58

    G-whats your source?
    when you were dreaming

  • 95 Toon1978 // Aug 31, 2008 at 14:58

We are bringing a player in on loan with no option to buy sign of desperation. G, Deigo looks like a pipe dream if we are bringing in a player just on loan to tide us over for a season as Diego would be the creative midfielder where this Gonzalez would be playing. NUFC have had enough time to sort all this transfer business out and leave it to the last minute.

  • 96 Toon // Aug 31, 2008 at 14:58

If we were going to sign anyone before the deadline then some news would break today and it seems very unlikely to happen lads.

Lets just hope we can keep our players fit and battle through with what we have got.

  • 97 RobB // Aug 31, 2008 at 14:59

Lennon needs to move on. He’s gone stale. With Bentley there he won’t get too many chances. As a Leeds man he’d be fine in the NE. Perhaps Ramos is playing him to show him off.

  • 102 StevieA // Aug 31, 2008 at 15:01

The thing is about transfer deals is they can happen very quickly if most of the ground work has been done in the months before the transfer. A lot of work goes on behind the scenes and with the sale of Milner it could just give us the extra funds to give the green light on some of these potential deals.

We would have been in touch with a lot of agents over the last few months so believe me it wouldn’t take long to finalize some of these deals.

  • 103 Marguerite // Aug 31, 2008 at 15:01

RobB(89) I heard the same thing too, with Owen @ 29 he is not looking to move on hence wanting a 5-year deal.
Do not believe the rags re the club only offering him a 1 year deal. We should all know by now just how much they are trying to undermine our club.

reality is though, if he has two and a half good years on this new contract he will have enjoyed his time and would be open to negotiate a new one - Diego plays for Werder Bremen by the way

  • 106 beyethegreat // Aug 31, 2008 at 15:01

i can see us signing players just not big names it is unfair to say we have not tried earlier in the transfer market as we tried to sign modric and apparentley were ot to far from aimar and put in bids for arshavin gomis and arda though how true the reports are i dont know

but i will say it again G what is your source

  • 107 Tom4Nufc // Aug 31, 2008 at 15:02

Lol toon lad, was just typing that!

  • 108 StevieA // Aug 31, 2008 at 15:03

Toon lad you are right! I must have been thinking of someone else nevermind.

Still we had a lot of interest in Diego several months ago so it wouldn’t surprise me if we followed up on the interest eventually.

  • 109 Shot Bru! // Aug 31, 2008 at 15:03

Toon 1978, i think nufc have played their cards right in announcing to the media of their offer to Owen. @ least once and for all we will find out if he really wants to commit his future to the club and if he does sign the contract it will stop the constant negative publicity from the media about Owen playing for the toon. If he goes then we did all we could in offering 120k a which is more than enough.

  • 110 Toon // Aug 31, 2008 at 15:04

You can ask G his source all day long he hasnt got one he is winding you up

    IGNORE HIM

  • 111 StevieA // Aug 31, 2008 at 15:04

What about Saviola on loan? Anyone know if that’s going to happen? I suppose it will depend on Robinho going to Chelsea and Real Madrid buying a replacement like David Villa?

  • 112 NNN // Aug 31, 2008 at 15:04

Thiago Heleno to sign for Newcastle.

  • 113 Angryman the angry fan // Aug 31, 2008 at 15:05

How long??? I mean how effing long have i been telling you all re CASHLEY??

He doesnt want to spend man………….

    Berbi, lennon, diego………
if he wont offer Aimar more than 35k a week(what he was on at his last club) wtf do you lot think he will offer any of that lot??

“oh i’ll give you 20 k a week, and might even buy you a suit or 2 if we win” if we lose you buy your own……………”

i can see the accountants putting the contracts together now!!

  • 114 Ross // Aug 31, 2008 at 15:06

StevieA-the papers said we were showing alot of interest a few months ago.
As far as the credibility of tabloids go with relation to NUFC in my eyes, i wouldnt be surprised if kev had never heard of Diego.

  • 115 Toon // Aug 31, 2008 at 15:06

On Saviola not in Real squad

    to late to get him

  • 116 JC // Aug 31, 2008 at 15:07

StevieA- Diego plays for werder bremen not hamburg…..?????

  • 117 StevieA // Aug 31, 2008 at 15:08

Aimar was offered 70k from what was told at the meeting with the corporate clients.

  • 118 Ross // Aug 31, 2008 at 15:08

Angryman-apparently in the coroprate meetings held, Ashley said he had offered Aimar 70k a week. both player and agent were happy, and it was Aimar’s wife who forced the deal to break down after refusing to move to the north east.

  • 119 Big Willie // Aug 31, 2008 at 15:09

Matias Fernandez will arrive along with Nacho, both have been at the training ground today.

  • 120 Phil // Aug 31, 2008 at 15:09

i am surprised that noone has mentioned this yet but don’t you think this is just a show of face from newcastle?

they know owen doesn’t want to stay, but they want to avoid getting stick from the fans so they publicly announce that they offered him a better contract. This was if owen still turns it down noone can turn on the club and blame them.

  • 121 StevieA // Aug 31, 2008 at 15:10

Too late? Why too late to jump on a plane?

It’s much quicker to get someone on loan, we need s triker badly unless we start to introduce Donaldson and Carroll into the first team. Big risk but I would much rather see them 2 than the run down Ameobi!

  • 122 Toon // Aug 31, 2008 at 15:11

Pennant left out of Liverpool squad

If we are going to sign anyone it will be him

  • 123 beyethegreat // Aug 31, 2008 at 15:12

phill even if it is a show of face they offered the contract and if owen wants to leave there is o more we can do

  • 124 Ross // Aug 31, 2008 at 15:12

Toon-a few of my mates have said to me they reckon we’ll get pennant as a replacement. I wouldnt exactly be impressed if we did to be honest.

  • 125 beyethegreat // Aug 31, 2008 at 15:13

G wots ur source G oh G oh wots ur source

  • 126 StevieA // Aug 31, 2008 at 15:13

I think Lennon is much more likely, he needs first team football and would be a good replacement for Milner. He is much quicker and probably more skillful than Milner, although they are both a bit inconsistent when it comes to crosses and shots.

Pennant is a good player but again inconsistent when it comes to final delivery or shot.

  • 127 NNN // Aug 31, 2008 at 15:13

    Newcastle to sign Thiago Heleno.

  • 128 Toon // Aug 31, 2008 at 15:14

Phil i Agree 100 per cent

On Pennant wouldnt be great but better than Milner

  • 129 Toon1978 // Aug 31, 2008 at 15:15

    Beyethegreat

G told me his source was MONEY, i can’t remember his first name sorry but i believe MONEY works with the youngsters at NUFC.

  • 130 iain // Aug 31, 2008 at 15:16

i dont want to panic but f@ck me i could use a stiff drink right now.

i would seriously cry if we sold krul for 1.5m though that can never be true

  • 131 Toon // Aug 31, 2008 at 15:16

    Richard Money

  • 132 scottish mag // Aug 31, 2008 at 15:17

pennants on his way to stoke

  • 133 Toon1978 // Aug 31, 2008 at 15:18

    TOON

    Thats it mate.

  • 134 Ross // Aug 31, 2008 at 15:18

Kalou is rubbish like. I havent seen modric do a thing since i’ve turned on either.
I really dont know who we’ll sign to be honest. I dont even know if anyone will come in. It’s a shame but i’m rather confident we wont be bringing in 3 or 4 players in 24 hours.

  • 135 Gooooo the Toon // Aug 31, 2008 at 15:19

NNN: Have heard we are going to sign Thiago Heleno as well.

  • 136 mitch // Aug 31, 2008 at 15:19

PLEASE WE HAVE SO MANY SCARE MONGERES

  • 137 Toon // Aug 31, 2008 at 15:20

Suprised some people are thinking we will get 3-4 players in, in 24 hours when it has taken all summer to get the others in

  • 138 StevieA // Aug 31, 2008 at 15:20

Zenden has said he wants to leave Marsielle. I would be tempted to go for him, yes he’s 32 but if we could get him for 2 million or so then I think he would be a good addition to the squad.

  • 139 Toon // Aug 31, 2008 at 15:22

    Zenden is an awful player

  • 140 StevieA // Aug 31, 2008 at 15:23

I agree Mitch. Anything is possible in over 24 hours, have some faith lads.

As I say most deals are setup with certain events in mind so don’t be surprised to see us go for some of our earlier targets now.

  • 141 StevieA // Aug 31, 2008 at 15:24

Zenden is a good central midfield player and has a point to prove with being overlooked for the dutch team.

  • 142 ANON // Aug 31, 2008 at 15:25

    STEVIEA

    Gerrrrooofffffff, ZENDEN???

You have just confirmed everyhting i thought about you!!!

  • 143 ANON // Aug 31, 2008 at 15:26

    STEVIEA

    Go on, KEEP DIGGING it!!

  • 144 StevieA // Aug 31, 2008 at 15:28

Think whatever you like but I am not the type to call players ‘awful’ or ‘crap’ if they are not world class superstars. Zenden would give us a good option in midfield and would only cost 2 million. He can pass the ball and has good vision too, he has a point to prove so YES I think he would be a good addition with a handful of other players coming in.

  • 145 Ian // Aug 31, 2008 at 15:41

They have been chasing the Wow and failed now in desperation we are trying to keep Owen.

    What a mess.

Sign a good player who is likely to come here, Matt Derbyshire from Blackburn, he is a good striker who scores in the premiership and can also play the attacking midfielder if our sickly duo are fit enough to play.

  • 146 StevieA // Aug 31, 2008 at 15:42

It’s a long time to January Anon, beleive me Zenden would be a good ’short term’ addition. You might even get him on loan.

It’s amazing how many players are passed off as ‘crap’ or ‘awful’ on this blog. So Malouda and Zenden are bad players are they? Absolute tosh.

  • 147 Ian // Aug 31, 2008 at 15:43

anon leave him alone we need youth in the team!!

  • 148 StevieA // Aug 31, 2008 at 15:44

Ian- Derbyshire is a good young player I agree. Another one who reminds me of a young Beardsley. Whether he would leave Blackburn is another matter.

I am hearing things about Adolfo Valencia but not sure if it’s true or not. Don’t know who to believe anymore!

  • 149 Edd Case // Aug 31, 2008 at 15:46

2 x players are definitely signed, that’s for sure.
Who they are, I don’t know - perhaps Berbatov? (Not in the Spurs sqaud AGAIN today)

I think Keegan is waiting on a third and that will probably be Atouba.

We WILL sign at least three tomorrrow, we simply have to.

I firmly believe that one will be a WOW signing and the others relatively unheard of or ones we’ll go, “well, not what we expected”.

My money in on Berbatov right now…probably wrong but I can’t see why not, given he’s a fan etc.

  • 150 StevieA // Aug 31, 2008 at 15:49

    Berbatov Edd?

He would be a fantastic signing and he does have a link with Newcastle being a fan as a young un’ and all but would he move to a team that’s pretty equal to Spurs? I am not sure.

Having said that Shearer turned down Man United to join Newcastle so it can happen but just can’t see it. He would cost at least 27 million too, worth every penny and would send a message to the southern press but just can’t see it for some reason at least not while we are not in europe anyway.

  • 151 neeraj // Aug 31, 2008 at 15:57

again when u ask abt source
    the guy disappears……….

i HOPE we sign some one tomorrow really HOPE

  • 152 Ian // Aug 31, 2008 at 16:12

Stevie A, Mido from Middlesbrough would be a good signing but it looks like they wouldnt dare sell him after his recent performance, they couldnt wait to offload him before!!

He wouldnt have to move home.

It could be that we have just lost one striker target and that is why we are bowing to Owens demands I am hoping we still have one left, only a little over 24 hours.

SWP has just scored for Man City against Sunderland-damn SWP might be back to his old scoring ways!

  • 153 hadrian // Aug 31, 2008 at 17:08

of all the transfer targets to tease us with , you have to name one of my favorite players .
its just bloody mean if were not in for diego .

but he’s defo the kind of player we should be going for !! notice VdV hasnt moved either this season !

  • 154 Fred // Aug 31, 2008 at 17:08

BIG WILLIE YOU HAVE SAID SO MANY WRONG THINGS IN THE PAST HOW THE F UCK DO YOU EXPECT US TO BELIEVE YOU?!

  • 155 Macas // Aug 31, 2008 at 18:11

Big Willie talks bollocks. Nacho is on Inrternational duty

  • 156 StevieA // Aug 31, 2008 at 18:38

Ian - Again I agree Mido in his current form and fitness would be a good signing. Would get him away from all those parmo takeaways too!

That’s what I mean though. A lot of people might not rate players like Mido but people who know their football know that he would improve our squad a hell of a lot.

  • 157 Gillmag // Aug 31, 2008 at 19:39

whats the craic with Henry. Is he staing where he is or what.
We ned somebody stationed at Newcastle airport to see who comes in!!!

  • 158 thefuturesbrightthefuturesblackandwhite // Aug 31, 2008 at 19:42

my take on the owen situation . the club release details ie offered 120k a week over 3 years as they know he has no intention of staying. why else release the details. doesn’t normally happen.lets face it , if he leaves and we know hes been offered that , there is no way the club can be blamed. an increase in wages for 50 games in 3 years. 18m over 3 years. a lot yes but understandable as IF FIT would cost in current climate £14m to replace and then 3 years wages on top of that. my verdict. signs for spurs tomorrow. or forced to see out contract and leaves for summer for nothing. remember this contract wrangling is with the current club captain. what message does that send out. hope im wrong. don’t think i am.

  • 159 dave // Aug 31, 2008 at 19:48

This G bloke goes on various fan sites and publishes bullshit,he has in fact come out of his mummys arsehole headfirst.
