Kevin Keegan talked to the Sunday Sun after the game last night, after we were well beaten by a superb Arsenal display of attacking, flowing football.
Kevin Keegan - I have seven and a half players
Keegan said he had just seven and a half new players, so now we have to think who we think those are, and whether it would be eight and a half if Milner was still here.
Keegan’s need for additional players was shown yesterday when Newcastle just could match the Arsenal team, and we were hanging on for long portions of the game.
And right now we have no strength in depth, with a number of teenagers on the bench, which didn’t give Kevin many options during the game.
Kevin told the Sunday Sun:
“I’ve said all along we need three players in” “I think I’ve got seven-and-a-half good players at Newcastle now;.”
“Players we can build something around. We will get in two players hopefully. Maybe three.”
And Kevin came to the defense of Joey Barton amid a row over the midfielder’s late appearance as a substitute, and we think Kevin will need to do a lot more defending of Joey, as he plays more games for us this season.
Barton clashed with Samir Nasri, and Keegan was not happy with Nasri or the Arsenal captain - William Gallas - but notice they are both French as is Ousmane Dabo.
Kevin said:
“Joey came on and got a very good tackle in on Nasri, then the guy just sliced him down,” “If you write any different to that, you’re deceiving your readers.”
“I was upset at the end. I like Nasri very much — he’s a player we looked at and talked about — but you can’t do that.”
“Joey hasn’t done anything wrong there. I thought it was an excellent tackle. He got the ball he didn’t go in double-footed or anything.”
“Today, I guess we needed the break they got with the penalty or the one that we hit the bar with.” “There’s no denying they’re an excellent side and that they will finish in top four.”
Well how many seasons has it been since Arsenal were not in the top four - a very long time.
The only thing Newcastle fans want now are 3-4 good players signed by Monday at midnight, because what happens in the next 38 hours could well decide how well we do this season - and that’s fact.

Funny how two days ago Keegan said we were going to sign four or five players. Then yesterday he said three, now today he has said two. A pattern anyone. who’s the half player? smith and ameobi put together or dukes left hand side? i would love to see skeljbred, seb larson and derdiyok come in. dont think atouba and the guinean are what we need at all, defence isnt half bad although a lb would be good. enrique looks better than last season and bassong can provide cover. our problems are in the front third. i think barton will thrive on all this hate from opposition, his wry smile said it all… love it.

This is really worrying to be honest, if he thinks he’s only got 7 players with the genuine ability of starting, And lets be honest, his words on the transfer activity aren’t exactly exciting.

Basically KK is saying that Ameobi is half a player because we all know he is about 70% fit. Why we didn’t play Donaldson I don’t know but there you go!
So he is saying he has 7-8 players he can rely on but he needs more players to complete his team. This is why I believe we will sign 3-4 players otherwise the manager won’t be happy to go to January with what we have now.
Unless we begin to introduce youngsters like Donaldson but you can’t do that without giving them games on the pitch! Donaldson was Shearer mad as a youngster and idolizes him so it would be great to see him follow in Al’s footsteps one day. Whether he can or not I don’t know yet.

The medicals have been done in toon in the past, but the new regime is annoyed that the local press always reveal their targets, and in Jonas case where the official site where the first to reveal it, the medical was done in spain… Therefor it would make sense for the club to do the medicals in London, to keep the identity revealed… Only speculation on my part, but i would argue that it makes sense…

Hahaha cheers mate. I admit i was in the toon many a year ago to see the lads on an open top bus when we won the old 1st division. They were playing “simply the best”. Was a great day and i had good feelings about us winning all sorts then. Now, i and many other fanatical fans are still waiting for that KK magic to return when we had Man utd, Arsenal, Liverpool and Chelsea at our feet. But after yesterday i FINALLY come to the conclusion that we have gone so far back it will take us years to catch up to the big four. Realisation kicked in. I have been in denial for quite a while. Dalgleish,Gullit,Souness have ripped NUFC apart and wor Bobbi put it all back together again from the KK days only for an absolute IDIOT FFS to sack him. Now KK is back trying to pick the pieces up from idiots who couldn’t manage an under 11 team. I really hope KK has the backing of M.Ashley, i he has we are in for another KK dream.

you know what, i have ALWAYS wondered why we didnt get Reo Coker when he was available for ages last summer, it really baffles me. He would replace Butt and he fight for his team. Instead we got Barton, who despite being a top talent, has caused us a lot of grief since joining. Why do we always make the wrong choice? so frustrating

it certainly could be a factor, it would be silly to rule such a possibility out. It happened already with Silvestre last year didnt it? I think Bartons negative press will have an adverse effect as the media basically shove it down everyones throats.
Tell you what though, our result against Arsenal yesterday would have done us no favours. Not just the result, but the way we played, it clearly showed how big the gap is between us and the top four.

In terms of strength and defensive ability, Reo Coker is better. Barton has the better vision, but that is when he is on form. Form which we haven’t seen thus far. Where as Reo Coker has played consistently well for Villa since joining. AND no off the field drama.

Hitman, you are spot on there, it happened last year with can’t remember his mame even tho he’s just signed for Arsenal from Man U. We tried to get him but wouldn’t come as he’s mates with Dabo or whatever he’s called and wouldn’t come to same team as Barton (can’t say I blame him).
Sorry it’s Silvestra (or however you spell it) would have been a much better bet than what we ended up getting IMO

I would think there’s a reasonable possibility of one, two of three out of Atouba, Lennon and Gonzales being announced tomorrow (though I’ve no idea, in truth).
By the way, Sunderland: I’ve got nothing particularly against Sunderland (having not grown up in the NE) but I’m purty darn glad that Man City are winning today, If Sunderland won it would certainly give them reason to gloat. Plus I’m very happy that they got Chimbonda and Ferdinand, the two I most felt a huge sigh of relief we didn’t sign. Cisse and Diouf are good players though, so I’m not just saying that from a biased p.o.v.

To blame Ashley would be a joke, Keegan has said money is available. We HAVE bid for a hell of a lot of players.
Good players are either NOT for sale. Or only for inflated prices or just don’t want to come here. Even us fans have to take some of the blame. Booing players before they kick a ball isn’t the best light to paint a club while is transfer season.
Not to mention the corruption links and negative press that we’ve had over the last few years.
ASHLEY HAS BACKED KEEGAN. It’s just so far we have only been able to get 4 players of the quality that keegan want’s at a price that KEEGAN is willing to pay.

More panicking from the SJP “mgt team”. they have all summer to sort it out and now they are trying to get plyers in at hte last moment or even on loan. The EMO situation should of also been sorted out b4 now with him either signed up or shipped out - not allowing the current situation of 4million now or free in January.
All in all 7.5 players annd only 3 games gone - cant see mucg to cheer this season.

Toon1978 (post 174) is right - we have slipped a hell of a long way - and it won’t be put right overnight. I think the policy of investing in young potential like Arsenal have done makes a lot of sense, as we are in a slow re-building process. Even if they would come, Messi and so on would NOT solve all our problems and put us into the top 6; chances are if we bought 2 big stars for oodles of money, they’d either flop in the Premiership or take a long time to adjust OR with our luck, do their knee in after 5 minutes.
And the answer ISN’T to put these promising youngsters in too early, either - they are definitely our future, to be eased in over the next 2-3 seasons.
This is going to take a lot of patience, just like waiting for the transfer window to close, only worse. I just wish I had some.

I’ve just got back from work there, there was another lad with him too, looked of south american dissent but not sure if he was a friend or another player.
They dont tell me much but only Chris Houghton has been in today to look at little niggles from yesterday but he seemed in confident mood, as did the lads who came in for treatment, but what do the players know about perspective signings at the end of the day!

I agree 500% with you there. Barton in his day can be a fantastic player, but because of his attitude and his personal problems ATM he more plays bad than good games.
Reo Cocker would have been a fantastic buy for the Toon. I’ve always admired thag uy, not only because of his fight spirit, but he also is able to pass the ball to his teammates, something which has been a problem for us in recent years.
Parker: worked hard, but lost the ball too often and passed silly short passes
Butt: is not a good passer

With such a cloud hanging over the team right now I’m not too sure what’s gonna happen in the next two days (actually less), but as someone said on another board, I’m preparing to be underwhelmed. No problem though. I’ve got plenty of broon and can either celebrate our end of the transfer window or drown my sorrows because we did little or nothing these last few days except sell on Milner.
