Nasri Wouldn’t Sign For Newcastle Because Of Barton

September 1st, 2008 · 320 Comments

Kevin Keegan has again defended his midfield player Joey Barton, and refused to comment on the claim that Nasri didn’t come to Newcastle because Joey was at the club.

Joey Barton - will need to get used to the hostility

Kevin said yesterday:

“We decided to put Joey on because what you saw against Arsenal was all I’ve got fit at the moment,” “There wasn’t any other reason, he’s fit and he has to play at some point.”

“He went on for five minutes and did well. When I looked at my bench he was the best player to go on and if I didn’t do that I wouldn’t be doing my job properly.”

“Joey has got to get used to the stick he is going to receive and he’s got to win through that.”

“I don’t know what the French players think about Joey, you’d have to ask the French players. I saw what Nasri said about not signing for Newcastle (because of Joey) but I’m not going to say anything to them.”

Many observers thought Barton’s tackle on Nasri, just moments after coming on was rather reckless, but manager Keegan disagreed with that assessment. However, Barton will get this kind of treatment in almost every single game he plays this season, and he will need to get used to it - quickly.

Kevin added:

“You’ve got to be able to tackle in the game of football. Someone said Joey’s tackle was reckless, but it was a good tackle, it’s unfair to say anything different. That’s his game.”

It’s interesting that Nasri said he wouldn’t sign for Newcastle because of Barton. He would have been a great signing for us, but whether we could have got him even if Barton wasn’t here, when Arsenal were also interested, is very debatable - we don’t think so.

Comments welcome.

Who cares what some French midget says? We always knew Barton was going to be a problem when getting some players in anyway.

  • 2 Toon Jonas // Sep 1, 2008 at 9:10

    Nasri is a f*ckin P*ssy.

  • 3 HeronMag // Sep 1, 2008 at 9:12

Why don’t my comments appear on here?!?

Nasri would’ve went to Arsenal anyway

  • 4 JMC // Sep 1, 2008 at 9:14

we dont need the donkey face anyway…

today will change the outlook for most of us so lets keep the optimism high lads!!!

Come on Kev, show us what u’ve got lined up!!

  • 5 Edd Case // Sep 1, 2008 at 9:15

I dont care what Nasri says. Good player but we got Spidey instead - I’d much rather have Spidey.

I bet there’s a fair few managers in the Prem who’d prefer to have Spidey in their team - signing of the summer so far.

  • 6 StevieA // Sep 1, 2008 at 9:16

Yeah well Nasri won’t have to worry about british thugs at Arsenal will he? I could count the british players on one hand, or probably 3 fingers.

They have no chance of winning the premier league anyway. They only play when they want to play and are not consistent enough over a season, much like Liverpool.

  • 7 Tom // Sep 1, 2008 at 9:17

He is a good player, but if he doesn’t want to play with us because of Joey then we’re better off without him.

  • 8 51times // Sep 1, 2008 at 9:21

Like I said yesterday, Arsenal have a lightweight midfield full of puffs, they won’t win a single trophy.

  • 9 Tom4Nufc // Sep 1, 2008 at 9:21

One word…. DOOSH! Nasri is canny like, but he has let himself down by saying that… big time

  • 10 RobB // Sep 1, 2008 at 9:21

I wish we’d got rid of Barton. We could do without all the distraction. This is going to run all season and split the fans.

  • 11 keeeguuurn // Sep 1, 2008 at 9:22

    that sounds like rubbish.

would a player really turn down a team because someone on the squad has done some crazy things in the past. It sounds like more people trying to add more pressure.
This country has a sick tendency to pick on people in trouble.
The tackle was fair and if it was the other way round there would have been cheering and probably some sniggering from the commentators. People are furious that he smiled after the challenge … he was probably trying to show the crowd were not getting to him. NUFC should be paying a shrink to help the guy with his anger and to get him through the coming months.

  • 12 nick // Sep 1, 2008 at 9:22

I think we are being very naive if we thing Nasri is the only one who wouldn’t come because of Barton.

Barton is a total scumbag and I can’t beleive he is still at the club.

2nd chance - do me a favour !!! Barton is a serial nutter and sums up Allardyce’s judgement to a tee !!

  • 13 nick // Sep 1, 2008 at 9:24

Poor little Joey being picked on !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It beggars belief as he pockets his 60K a week for 2 minutes worth.

  • 14 Toon Jonas // Sep 1, 2008 at 9:24

    Nasri the french donkey face.

  • 15 Martin // Sep 1, 2008 at 9:25

Surely Nasri didn’t sign for us because Arsenal were after him…Like saying someone wouldn’t play for Plymouth because of that goal keeper involved in the car accident - so instead they sign for Man United…

  • 16 Toon 85 // Sep 1, 2008 at 9:28

Did silvestre not want to join us because of barton? After the dabo incident, alot of french players will think twice. Great clean tackle by barton btw

  • 17 51times // Sep 1, 2008 at 9:30

nick - Get behind Barton or get out. The club can’t afford the fans being split.

  • 18 ToonKing // Sep 1, 2008 at 9:30

maybe Nasri will now learn how proper football is played……pussy….hope Joey get’s him again next time.

  • 19 Toon Chicken // Sep 1, 2008 at 9:31

Having Barton in the toon must have an affect on other squad members, not just prospective signings.

I don’t believe for one second that Joey’s actions and his previous hasn’t had a negative impact on players like Charles N’Zogbia.

  • 20 RobB // Sep 1, 2008 at 9:33

51 - if you’re going to say that to all the fans who wanted rid of Barton, the club would be without half its fans. I suspect its the kids and thugs who support him.

  • 21 ToonKing // Sep 1, 2008 at 9:33

and not coming to Newcastle cause of Barton is a load of tripe.

    imagine this conversation……..

KK: well X.Y we think your a great player and wanna bring you to Newcastle.

    X.Y. : well i don’t know gaffer….you have this guy….Barton…i’m afraid he might beat me up….

KK: well…true….but we offer you 70k/week….

X.Y. : Pass the ball Joey mate!!! wanna have a pint after practice??

  • 22 nufc supporter // Sep 1, 2008 at 9:34

nasri is obviously makin this up

  • 23 hitman // Sep 1, 2008 at 9:34

a few players have knocked us back through barton…anyone now if this stricker xicsco is any good

  • 24 Toon Chicken // Sep 1, 2008 at 9:35

51 times - it should be Barton who leaves, not the fans. We were here first.

At the end of the day… No Fans - No NUFC. No Joey Barton - Happy Days!

I’m sick of being told by people like you that we should support that filthy vile scumbag just because he wears black and white. In my eyes the black and white and the respect that goes with it is a privilege, not a right. I support NUFC, not JB.

  • 25 SuperShearer // Sep 1, 2008 at 9:36

Barton’s got to prove everyone wrong this season. The tackle was fair, and to his credit when Nasri then hacked him down he responded with a cheeky smile. The problem is that he should try and just put his head down and get on with it. KK stood by him because football has a habit of turning its back on its players, just look at Gazza. As Newcastle fans I truly think we should back KK and therefore back Barton, for all they may boo we should cheer.

  • 26 Phil // Sep 1, 2008 at 9:37

51times- you cant tell someone to stop supporting the club because they don’t like having a thug like barton in the team.

he is going to cause so much trouble and bad publicity this season and that never mind the moral implications of keeping him should have been enough to get rid of him.

  • 27 51times // Sep 1, 2008 at 9:38

RobB - You are clearly a typical ignorant little Englander. So what if Barton has been given chances before? If they’re not given any help to change their behaviour, why do you expect them to put the trouble behind them?

  • 28 Bobby Ollox // Sep 1, 2008 at 9:38

lol ToonKing - of course that doesnt apply to Newcastle, where all our inbound players, are joining for the honour of playing for NUFC - the money offered is entirely immaterial - right Michael ?

  • 29 Dev // Sep 1, 2008 at 9:38

Nasri is a little shit bag on the pitch and have you seen the face on him? He thinks he’s rock solid!

  • 30 RobB // Sep 1, 2008 at 9:40

51 he’s had enough chances. I made the point yesterday that his smug smile showed he’d learned nothing. I’m with Toon Chicken on his point that I support NUFC nortJB. I certainly won’t boo, but I doubt if I’ll cheer either. (Unless he scores and I get caught up in the moment!)

  • 31 Dev // Sep 1, 2008 at 9:41

Super Shearer, actualy Bartons cheeky grin came after he had just floored Nasri…..when Nasri tripped him up Barton was rolling about the pitch lol.

But coming onin his first game back, florring someone and smiling at them is hardly the right way forward even if he did take the ball first…..he still could have easily broke Nasri’s neck with the force of the tackle lol.

Imagine if he had have been late and broke Nasri’s leg……that would have been the end for Joey Barton so he needs to watch himself.

  • 32 kenny g // Sep 1, 2008 at 9:41

to be perfectly honest, the fewer frenchmen near our team the better.
    Argentyne all the way…

  • 33 Kaizer Soze // Sep 1, 2008 at 9:42

Barton is a marked man now, not just by the french, but by other idiots in the game.

The problem with the french they all come across as whiter than white and have this national comraderie.
Soon as the national team get knocked out of a tournament they start slagging each other off.
If the england players were anything like that, there wouldnt be a frenchman playing at all in the EPL.
Remember Basile Boli vicious assault on Stuart Pearce??

That was in front of millions and most of the England team spotted it.

The french are so far up themselves they have to take their hats off to take a sh*t!!
I hope JB, gets over his troubles becomes a model pro and scores a hat trick against the frog laden gunners at st james’!!

  • 34 sirjasontoon // Sep 1, 2008 at 9:43

Nasri will be punished when we play at our place…Joey is going to come back strong and with a big point to prove.

If he wears the Toon shirt I am on his side.

  • 35 51times // Sep 1, 2008 at 9:43

Listen to you all talking about bad publicity. The media and England hate us anyway, Barton just gives them an easier excuse.

  • 36 Kaizer Soze // Sep 1, 2008 at 9:44

What exactly was wrong with the tackle - he got the ball did he not ???? Is that not the idea of making a tackle ??? sirjason - well said !!!!!

  • 41 Martin // Sep 1, 2008 at 9:46

51 times…I don’t think it’s fair to have an ‘all or nothing’ mentality with regards to Barton…

I remember slating Ameobi from the moment he 1st started - everyone cited potential, but I just thought he was a donkey…I’d groan when he came on the pitch - doesn’t make me any less of a Newcastle fan…

People support the club, not the player - AT THE SAME TIME - I do believe in 2nd chances, and I believe Barton has got the slimmest of chances of redeeming himself! He needs to play perfectly, with perfect behaviour and attitude for me to consider him a decent player again…Let’s not forget, he publically slammed us fans - the very people he expects to forgive him…

  • 42 51times // Sep 1, 2008 at 9:46

Sorry 51 times I’m in the Rob B camp as far as Barton is concerned,it’s transfer deadline day and people are still speaking about Barton, he is going to be a distraction till the day we get rid,and those who call nasri a donkey face frenchman ,very grown up.

  • 45 T Bagger // Sep 1, 2008 at 9:48

I’d sign for Newcastle just because joey is there. he’s an old school hard nut, ya need a bit of bottle in a team, so what he’s got a temper? he beat up a french man and a scouser, he’s a bloody hero

  • 46 51times // Sep 1, 2008 at 9:48

Why shouldn’t he slate us, with regards to our fans we’re living off reputation. You should never boo a Newcastle player, and we do that far too often.

  • 47 Kaizer Soze // Sep 1, 2008 at 9:49

    Sir Jasontoon

Spot on mate, see my post!!
Too many of the PC brigade on here at times, JB is an asset, he cost the club in excess of 4 million. In todays inflated market i would say he is worth more than that, he was one of our better, mopre consistent performers at the end of last season! His team mates all like him, you could see that by there reaction to Nasris cowardice on Saturday.

He deserves his chance, he is trying to get things right, he is doing rehab, if it doesnt work then yes, maybe a reconsideration is due. But lets give him the chance and back the lad to the hilt when he pulls on his toon shirt. He gives 100% and he has talent!!

PS DEV, Nasri got a smile because he was giving JB the verbals after he was perfectly tackled, and dint like that he cheaply lost the ball. He tried to provoke JB!!

  • 48 ronaldeano // Sep 1, 2008 at 9:50

@mick g, lighten up mate, he does look like a donkey! With rotten teeth and dog breath :)

  • 51 Aussie Dave // Sep 1, 2008 at 9:52

great tackle, shame Nasri dogged it and didnt go in hard, Joey would have broken the soft c%$k in half

  • 52 Toon Jonas // Sep 1, 2008 at 9:53

You are right Kaizer Soze.French people don’t have brians.

  • 53 Geordie Nick // Sep 1, 2008 at 9:53

broken his neck with the forcc of the tackle??? shut the f*k up will you, it was a perfectly fair and legal tackle, took the ball cleanly, if it was anyone else they have praised the tackle.
id put money on it that all you people sayin you want him out will be jumpin for joy when he scores and ull forget all about wat hes done if he starts runnning games from the midfield for us all season, fickle or wat

  • 54 sirjasontoon // Sep 1, 2008 at 9:54

Joey Barton will come good I have every faith in him..he has served his time and looks more hungry now which is what we want.

The Nasri tackle was perfect and if joey had of started I think the scoreline would have been different.

  • 55 Martin // Sep 1, 2008 at 9:54

so 51 times - what you’re saying is he is allowed to voice his displeasure, but we’re not?

I’m not a fan of the boo boys at all; I’ve never boo’d a newcastle player and never will - they were getting into the habit of booing anything and everything and it sends a very negative message to others from outside the club…BUT…When booing Sam Allardyce who was tearing our club apart - I couldn’t help but agree with them!

And regardless - it was ridiculously bad judgement to come out and say that - it’s us who indirectly pay his wages, it’s us who keep this club (his employer) going and it’s us; the toon army who, when taken to a player (Nobby, Oba soon to be Jonas) who can be some of the best fans in the world…

  • 56 Kaizer Soze // Sep 1, 2008 at 9:54

    MICKG

If the fact that some of us lot and the papers are wining about Joey Barton, prevents us from siging new players, then the club IS NOT being run professionally and the board and manager should resign!!

It isnt happening and it wont happen, so that was a bit silly really wasnt it??

Come on MA and KK do us proud and pull a few rabbits out the bag!! I am not for trophy signings but maybe one big name would make the rest of the league sit up and say WOW, the toon are gonna be string this year!!!!

  • 57 mitch // Sep 1, 2008 at 9:55

Nasri is a liar all Ihave to say he tried to wind barton up that why barton smiled. I hate players like that if you canot see NUFC is bigger than one player next time we play arsnil Iwould let joey mark nasri as we already know he is scared of joey

What a fuss about a tackle which the referee thought was fair. I am not a fan of Barton but in all the negatives I would rather see the part Allardyce played in all this mentioned more often. He signed Barton and unfortunately everybody else at NUFC from management to supporters has to live with it until such time as something can legitimately (??) be done. I do not know employment laws but I suspect NUFC have to read very carefully.

  • 66 ronjohno // Sep 1, 2008 at 10:01

  • 69 James // Sep 1, 2008 at 10:03

Zayatte was on trail at Newcastle and KK clearly believed he wasn’t good enough. That’s why he was shipped out.

Reports on BBC 606 said Owen has been seen in London today.

Of course with the amoument of commercial commitments he has it could be because of that. Also may have stayed over after the Arsenal game.

Joey Barton should have snapped Nasri in half, then it would have given the apers and the PC brigade something worth moaning about, as currently the moaning is non sensicle!!

I am not 100% in the Joey Barton Camp, but i do believe he is one of the most talented players at the club, and he should be given the chance to show that!

His tackle at the weekend was perfect, unlike Vinny Jones on Tottenhams Gary stevens some years ago, but VJ didnt get half as much sh*te as JB seems to be recieving!!

VJ tried to bite some poor buggers nose of “But that was just vinny he is a bit mad”

JB has much more talent on the pitch than VJ he has a scrap woth a scouse scally and a team mate, did the crime, admitted it, served his time, and he is still villified (I think thats right)…..

Let him get on with it now, and lets give him support.

We should be venting our spleens at the Billionaire, who wont spend a bean, to improve our threadbare team….(Poet and i dont know it)

Come on CASHLEY, move your arse, make yourself popular with the masses and get some DECENT players signed, not risks and not bargains…..Proven Quality is what we need.

Nice to see that good old fashioned xenophobia is alive and well in geordieland. Just a shame that the Barton-Nasri incident detracted from a superb football display. Could have been 7-0…

  • 80 simon376 // Sep 1, 2008 at 10:13

When Arsenal came in for him I would think that would have been it. Aa for Barton, yes, give people a 2nd chance, but lets face it, how many chances has this bloke had? When I was at the PSV game, I was sitting beside a couple who had been season ticket holders for years, but they gave their tickets up when he signed. I know where they are coming from. He might have been a good player at Man City, but nothing but trouble as a person. Since he came to us, it’s all been trouble and next to nothing on the pitch.

For all the people sticking up for him, how many did that last year when he was slagging us fans off. Us fans, the people who really are the club, the ones who pay their wages.

I for when will be very happy if the stories are true and Portsmouth want to buy him. If we then start saying we need a replacement first, do we? He’s hardly played for us and when he has, he done nothing to write home about.

I’m not going to be booing him when he does play as I would never boo one of our players. I wont be clapping or cheering either when his name is read out. The only time I will clap/cheer is when he has been through whatever treatment he needs and is cured.

Angryman I agreed with everything up until the Ashley comment!

What is the issue? that he brought in 3 quality players that cost next to nout…that’s just good business…

He’s bought our most expensive defender in history (who genuinely looks good - unlike Boumsong) and yet he’s still tight fisted?!?

We have very little to offer top players and that is NOT Ashley’s fault…give him until midnight before you reach for the pitch forks and noose!

  • 91 C // Sep 1, 2008 at 10:20

It’s was the same with Bowyer. We have to get used with all this and that Barton will get yellow cards only because his name is Barton.

  • 92 PopB // Sep 1, 2008 at 10:20

please… fs to the media and their geordie hating biases. i couldn’t care less about their opinions because they just look for any reason to tear us down. that kind of adversity is what makes a geordie be so passionate. the more they pick on joey the more i love him. a true geordie would back joey 100% just like he gives 100% for the black and white everytime he’s on the pitch. a true geordie wouldn’t care about publicity because it was bad before joey and it’ll be bad when he’s gone. it’s us against the world and i kind of like it that way. for those of you calling him a thug you don’t know what a thug is if thats the case. you need to come out of your shell. what he did wouldn’t even be news if he wasn’t a footballer. a true geordie would have joey’s back. king kev is a TRUE geordie… some of you lot just don’t get it.

  • 93 The Entertainers // Sep 1, 2008 at 10:21

Oh i see the old xenophobia remarks are being thrown at the Geordies on the back of the Arsenal game.

I suppose Arsenal can take the moral high ground being so cosmopolitan compared to Newcastle. Shame they are not so supportive towards English players…….what was that word xenophobia!

  • 94 Born Again Geordie // Sep 1, 2008 at 10:22

@ronaldeano (68) good call mate !!! lol :) I think Tevez would also make the squad !!!

  • 95 51times // Sep 1, 2008 at 10:23

I always use the term cockney in relation to any kind of London scum. If it bothers you, good.

Now, run along you bigoted Englishman.

  • 96 hadrian // Sep 1, 2008 at 10:23

A tourist is in North London one Saturday and he decides he would very much like to go to a football match, so he asks a man in the street if there are any local matches being played that afternoon.

“Well,” replies the man, “the Arsenal ground is very close but they’re playing away today. If you feel you really must see a match, the Tottenham ground is not that far away. You go straight down this road and you’ll see two queues, a big queue and a small queue.

You should go to the small queue because the big one is for the fish and chip shop.

  • 99 Born Again Geordie // Sep 1, 2008 at 10:28

@mjc - why do you feel the need to come on a blog site for a team that you do not even support. Is it because all the Arsenal ones are written in French ???? you souther tosser !!! :)

  • 100 LooneyToon // Sep 1, 2008 at 10:28

Few comments that have been spot on….give the lad a chance to earn his 60k a week….
you are told when you are having trouble with aggression problems to smile if anyone pishes you off…so thats what Barton did on saturday….it would make an interesting headcount as to how many of the lads and lasses inside the emirates have been in jail before….
Hypocrites spring to mind…I had some daft mackem at work telling me that Bartons tackle was a disgrace….reminded him of a certain tackle by their gaffer on Haarland…that was different apparently….double standards indeed

  • 101 Born Again Geordie // Sep 1, 2008 at 10:30

    @ronaldeano - you should check this site out http://www.uglyfootballers.com - lol :D

  • 102 Will // Sep 1, 2008 at 10:31

Joey Barton is a Newcastle player, so i will support him 100%.

What he was locked up for was hardly extreme. anyone who was ’shocked’ by the incident needs a reality check, very badly.

Keegan is being hounded from all angles about Barton, he doesn’t need it from any of us IMO.

  • 103 DH7 Mags // Sep 1, 2008 at 10:31

oh by the way. i spoke with mike ashley on saturday outside the drayton park pub. he went to the offlicense next door and got cans in instead of going to the pub. my mate got a photo took with him, he gave ashley a five pound note to help him spend on some players haha!! ashley took the joke as well. he told us that only reason milner went was because of his agent. his agent wanted £600,000 to keep milner at newcastle, so ashley told him where to go basically. He did say that there will be players coming in, but for obvious reason’s would not say who.

  • 105 azim // Sep 1, 2008 at 10:34

we need at least 3 more players….xisco, gonzalez and sign a left back today…enrique is a crap…sell smith and ameobi..both of them look invicible in the squad….if possible sign veloso to replace butt who is so slow…thats it..we can fight for top 6 this season if we sign all these players..

  • 106 Canada44 // Sep 1, 2008 at 10:35

many players won’t come because barton is here…do you want play with this guy??? surelly not!!!!

I really don’t understand newcastle keen a guy like that…it’s sad for the club.

I pried MO go to Manchester United!

  • 107 mitch // Sep 1, 2008 at 10:36

those agents are ruining football that is why players are not going to certain clubs

  • 108 ed_speed // Sep 1, 2008 at 10:37

enrique is a left back with imence quality.

i think you have probably never been to a game, as if you had you would realise that he is a very good player.

  • 112 ObaFan2 // Sep 1, 2008 at 10:42

Lol get over it and move on, even Wenger has said it wasn’t right what Nasri did………. but supose he had to.

Do we care what the Arse think? do we care what some French footballers think? I think not tbh.

  • 113 ObaFan2 // Sep 1, 2008 at 10:44

Ha ha, like the MA downing a pint so he’s not noticed clip

  • 114 Rasko a.k.a Hadji // Sep 1, 2008 at 10:47

We need to believe in our players just like Man Utd with Cantona and Keane,Arsenal with Vieira and Adams etc.
JB wouldnt give a flying f..k if he gets booed by other fans as long as he knows that we got his back covered 100%

  • 115 Sav // Sep 1, 2008 at 10:48

After Saturday, Nasri choosing TheArse over Newcastle is a no-brainer tbh.
I’m more worried to hear Inler may be making the same selection today as rumoured off to Emirates for 8mil. Of all the players we are linked with, cover for Nicky Butt is not amongst them. Gokhan Inler fits the bill. Come on Ashley!
The other point is, I’ve read so much biased Southern, anti-Newcastle tripe that I’m feeling like getting behind Barton (against my better judgement, I should add). It is nobody’s business who the manager puts on and when he chooses to do so. And if Barton is eligible, he can play. That’s it.

    Hadji, I second that.

  • 118 BenjiToon // Sep 1, 2008 at 10:53

Do you reckon Ashley is going to end up with the same rep as Barton? A beer swilling lout in a football shirt? Lol.

Apparently he could get done for that pint on Saturday: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/football/leagues/premierleague/newcastle/2660366/Newcastle-owner-Mike-Ashley-faces-possible-Police-action-over-pint—Football.html

Seriously though, that’s got to be a wind up!

  • 119 Born Again Geordie // Sep 1, 2008 at 10:55

@Rasko - I agree 100% - backing the players on the field at the time is the best thing the supporters can do. And if your not prepared to support them then f**k off !!!!

Barton’s tackle was clean. Nasri’s foul was bad. But to some extent this whole mess is to be expected. Barton’
