Newcastle Bid £8M For Chelsea’s Florent Malouda

September 1st, 2008 · 174 Comments

The Daily Telegraph is reporting that Newcastle United manager Kevin Keegan has made an £8M transfer bid for Chelsea’s French international winger, Florent Malouda.

Florent Malouda - Toon have bid £8M

We have been linked with Malouda for a couple of weeks but that the deal would only be made if Chelsea could secure the services of Real Madrid’s Robinho.

28 year old Malouda did not have a good season at Chelsea, but he could still be a good buy for the Toon because of his experience and undoubted skill.

The initial price being asked was £12m since Chelsea paid £15M for him last summer from French club Lyon, but he’s just not worth that after having a poor first season, so it seems to us a reasonable bid for the club to make.

Malouda also had a very disappointing tournament with France in this summer’s European Championships.

If Kevin Keegan has gone for him, then we feel there must be something there he sees, or Kevin thinks he can get the best out of the player.

We wouldn’t be disappointed if we can get Florent thought the door today – for that price.

What do you think?

Let us know - comments welcome.

  • 4 ToonDaft // Sep 1, 2008 at 18:43

The Mirror are reporting that Villa are on of the clubs in for Joey

  • 5 ELFER // Sep 1, 2008 at 18:43

Malouda isn’t absolutely not what we need, hope not! Haven’t heard if the deals for gonzalez and that young striker went through?

But as far as I heard these two players could be excellent buys!!

  • 6 Johnston // Sep 1, 2008 at 18:44

would be a good signing imo.

  • 7 Prandom // Sep 1, 2008 at 18:46

Hmm!? We do need cover on the wing with milner leaving and duff’s injuries, but surely there’s someone cheaper for the same quality!?

  • 8 craigf // Sep 1, 2008 at 18:46

    He won’t come…just another rumour!!

Think we are more likely to sign Jermaine Pennant from Liverpool

  • 9 keegan is king // Sep 1, 2008 at 18:46

been poor for chelski so far but so was SWP, parker, ben haim, shevchenko to name a few so could be a good signing

  • 10 ToonKing // Sep 1, 2008 at 18:49

i admit it would be WOWish, we would have been over the moon if we heard this news last summer…

…still not what we have been expecting….

  • 11 Will // Sep 1, 2008 at 18:50

What’s wit the Joey Barton crack? is he going or is it someone being a tool?

  • 12 nightfall // Sep 1, 2008 at 18:51

    only if we sell duff…

  • 13 NotAGhostToon // Sep 1, 2008 at 18:52

I think if we sign him now, its the perfect time where we can get him at a good price & under keegan hopefully find his pre-chelsea form.

  • 14 cooldj // Sep 1, 2008 at 18:52

we need bodies it’s as simple as that. not exactly my first choice but Jose or Avram must have seen something in him so whatever. better than duff :)

  • 15 Midjew // Sep 1, 2008 at 18:54

    Well…

    Milner out 12m

    Malouda in 8m

4m left over, NOT bad at all.

    Enought for another good player.

Good Business, i really like Malouda, but like ANY player that goes to Chelsea, he was disheartened but at NUFC I think he would do well.

  • 16 bri // Sep 1, 2008 at 18:57

If we dont sign at least 3 QUALITY PLAYERS i would be devestated .We need players in and theres only 5 hours left it does not look good.

  • 17 daydeburt // Sep 1, 2008 at 18:59

I for one hope that Joey Barton and Michael Owen both go, obviously for different reasons. MO because he just has not played enough football for us, and Joey because he won’t play enough football for us over the next 12 months.

Smudge and Bambi need to leave, but I’m sure neither will happen. I have to admit I am totally underwhelmed to what has happened so far today in terms of transfers.

I will reserve judgement until the midnight deadline however. The sad thing is lads and lasses whatever happens we’ll all be back here in January pressing refresh ever bloody 2 minutes! keep the faith, howay the lads (Remember, as bleak as it looks, at least your not a mackem!)

  • 20 sirjasontoon // Sep 1, 2008 at 19:00

Malouda is CAK and won’t wow me,would prefer Milner..if they let Joey go for a shit fee i Will be on here going crazy later..all Mike is doing is selling assets and getting in Shit.

Maluda fk off you are not wanted here.

  • 21 lordoflight // Sep 1, 2008 at 19:02

One word sums up how we are feeling at the moment disapointed

  • 22 Ross G // Sep 1, 2008 at 19:03

Anyone for a swap deal involving Alan Smith and Leighton Baines who cant get a game at Everton. Also I have been told by a good mate of mine albeit a Norwich fan that he was sat near ex player Lil Fuccillo, who is now our chief scout. Apparently he was writing down stuff and ringing all game thats how he recognised him. He said it was without a doubt that the player he was scouting was SEB LARSSON. I reckon we could be getting him in as Milners replacement.

  • 23 nightfall // Sep 1, 2008 at 19:04

sirjasontoon - “all Mike is doing is selling assets and getting in Shit.” ….idiot…

  • 24 hadrian // Sep 1, 2008 at 19:04

  • 28 Tom_Toon // Sep 1, 2008 at 19:06

    £8mil.

More like 8 quid, any more and we are beng ripped.

He has been absolutely disgusting for Chelsea.

  • 29 GraemeR // Sep 1, 2008 at 19:06

  • 31 StevieA // Sep 1, 2008 at 19:06

    Malouda is “crap” “cak” “awful”

Do me a favour! Florent Malouda has always been a very highly rated player. Granted he has lost his form lately but so did Duff rememember? So did SWP remember? So did many other players that went to Chelsea!

If we signed Malouda it would be a fantastic signing. Mark my words you would see a different Malouda at Newcastle, he would thrive and again it would give us more options in midfield. A snip at £8 million in my opinion and 10 times the player Milner ever was.

  • 32 James // Sep 1, 2008 at 19:08

PORTSMOUTH and VILLA have placed deals on the table for Barton.

He is in talks with one of them about moving.

Moyes has made a last ditch bid to get SMITH.

shouldn’t you reserve judgment until at least January so we can see how we do w/ who is brought in…? everybody jumps to these knee-jerk reactions, and all that matters is how the squad does.

  • 37 Tino is a Geordie // Sep 1, 2008 at 19:11

black and white paul- Best players!? mate if someone who has been here 3 years and clocked up a MIGHTY 50 appearances on £103k a week and a thug who should be playing for strangeways 11 are our best players, then we really are in the sh1t.

  • 38 James // Sep 1, 2008 at 19:12

PORTSMOUTH and VILLA have put bids on the table to take Barton off our hands. Ashley wants him out before Friday’s FA hearing.

Barton is in talks with one of the clubs and provided they match his wages he will be gone before midnight.

  • 39 StevieA // Sep 1, 2008 at 19:12

Some information for you just in case you are not sure about the lads history (sigh)

    About Florent Malouda:

Florent Malouda was born in French Guiana and first developed his skills and ability playing street football in his home country during his early teenage years. His natural flair for the game was evident from the beginning and his ability to open up defences attracted interest from scouts for French club Chateauroux and he was soon playing for the club. Malouda made his senior debut for Chateauroux at the age of 16.

Malouda moved to Guincamp in 2000 and his talent began to flourish at the club with his attacking ability obvious for all to see. He formed a lethal scoring partnership with team mate Didier Drogba and his performances earned him a move to larger club Lyon.

At Lyon alongside players such as Juninho, Michael Essien and Diarra, Malouda linked up to form a midfield of talented maestros who controlled the game from the middle of the park. His impresive performances for Lyon were finally recognised and rewarded when he was called up to the French national team.

At the end of the 2006-07 season Malouda made clear his intention to leave Lyon with both Chelsea and Liverpool vying for his signature. Malouda decided to join Chelsea and link up with former team mates Didier Drogba and Michael Essien at the London club.

At international level Malouda has been a regular fixture with the French national team was named as a member of the squad that participated in the recent 2006 World Cup. During the World Cup Malouda impressed with a run of strong performances and was credited with playing an integral part in France’s success in the tournament.

  • 42 Kevin // Sep 1, 2008 at 19:14

    Malouda - okay, fine.
Getting VERY depressed watching the national news…not a single exciting story coming out of Newcastle, and while I’ve been one of the more positive supporters, I’m beginning to realize that Ashley is DEFINITELY not willing to go for big players, for exciting signings. We’re only in this to buy cheap, young, quality talent, in hopes to make money on selling them in future windows. We’re most definitely now a “selling club” with no intentions to win any silverware, but only to make money in a very, very long term goal. Responsible and sensible, yes. Exciting, electrifying, passionate? OH, most certainly not. A very, very bored and disappointed Newcastle fan here, lads.

  • 43 sas // Sep 1, 2008 at 19:14

Malouda was world class a year ago, I’d take him in a heartbeat. Can’t imagine we’re the only ones after him if he is available, and that he’d come to us without any European football. It’d be quite a coup to pull it off if true. Which I doubt it is.

  • 53 bob // Sep 1, 2008 at 19:18

£8 million for Malouda? If we pay that for Malouda, having sold Milner for around that price (Minus any money paid to Leeds) then I’ll be really dissappointed!

We’ll have sold a young very promising player for a 28 year old that has done nothing for Chelsea.

  • 54 GraemeR // Sep 1, 2008 at 19:18

still hoping for Derdiyok and Moutinho - cant see it happening - or anything else for that matter.

Getting rid of Barton, Smith and Ameobi would cheer me up as would 9 million for exEMO - hes not going to sign the new contract so we may as well get some cash for him.

  • 55 wigaz // Sep 1, 2008 at 19:18

Where the hell are the other signings! hours to go & we only have 2 in! & even they aint officially on club site, mind you they are normally miles behind the rest of the football world! I would rather have Pennant than Malouda he’s younger, just as quick & i think could do a job for us. Once Viduka is fit or Xisco is in the team then him & jonas could provide good ammo. I understand people not being bothered with Barton leaving but why would you want rid of Owen? he’s our best goalscorer by far! please keep info comin lads better than SSN this.

I won’t complain about Malouda signing. I won’t be overwhelmed though.

It’s a funny thing about Barton leaving (if he really is). I’ve been anti-Barton since Christmas(ish), but now that he’s done the time and appears to be a target for dickheads like Nasri, I feel as though I would miss him if he went.

If he does go, best of luck to him. He could probably do with a fresh start after everything that’s happened over the last couple of years (all of his own making of course). Perhaps a move is all that he needs.

lets hope that the official website goes into overdrive at 12.01am after all why update it many times when once detailing the 3,4 or 5 signings can do!! we have to trust MA and KK and pray that they come up trumps, if KK does not feel supported and promises broken then you’d expect him to walk, wouldnt blame him if that happened. but lets be positve there are deals to be made and i believe (maybe blindly as a true fan) that we will complete these deals to have at least 4 faces in by tomorrow, who though is the big question!!

Come on lads, have a bit of faith. Whoever we get in may not be an earth-shattering big name, but who gives a s***?

Let’s face it, Spurs signed Modric and Bentley for big money and they’ve looked nothing special, City’s bids for Berbatov, Robinho, Gomez, Villa etc just take the mick.

Keegan will build us a real TEAM, not an assortment of names who can’t play together. If KK thinks Malouda is worth the dosh, then that’s good enough for me - he took us closer to the title than anyone else in recent times, he can take us up the table without wasting MA’s money!

Sas - and which of those players are with us now? Neither.
I’m not complaining about any of the signings we’ve pulled in - they’ve been fantastic for the club and the money. But that’s the point - we’re playing the long-term game. We’re trying to build a bridge out of toothpicks, my friend. The teams going for the title are just on a different level than we are at the moment.

  • 88 StevieA // Sep 1, 2008 at 19:30

Exactly Gorskino when you look at the list of players who failed at Chelsea to some degree it’s frightening!

    Shevchenko
    SWP
    Ballack (coming good now)
    Malouda
    Ivanavic
    Pizarro

I could go on and on but it’s a pressure club and although Newcastle is a pressure club we have shown we can get players back to there best in the past or help them reach there potential.

Get in Appiah and Bullard and let Barton go.

Then sign Warnock and Larsson for decent money.

    GK: Given, Harper
    LB: Warnock, Enrique
    RB: Beye, Geremi

    LM: Zoggy, Duff
    RM: Jonas, Larsson
CM: Bullard, Appiah, Guthrie, Butt, (Nacho)

ST: Owen, Oba, Viduka, Xisco, Carroll, (Smith, Ameobi)

Let Smith and/or Ameobi go if we get bids.

That’s not too shabby, even if there is no WOW signing..

Palacious looks decent, but still a virtual unknown over her, worth a punt tho??? malouda hasnt done much at Chelski, but prior to this was a big game player, so chelski hoodoo? at 8m not bad going, well done toon for getting 12m for milner tho!!cmon nufc lets get these players tied up!!

Only player I can see that is 22 from Villareal (from the rumour before) is Matias Fernandez who is another Argie, and was awarded South American footballer of the year in 2006.
Plays attacking MF, and can play up front too. Is about 5ft9, would be pleased with that. :)

I’ll sum up Malouda and see if anyone can disagree….

Talented (definitely good enough in this respect) but lazy lazy lazy (did you see his total and utter lack of movement at the Euro’s?). Not the kind of player I’d like to see at Toon, sorry. Gutierrez and Guthrie are two good examples of why we don’t need this kind of second rater. Skill and workrate.

Where is our LB ? Where is our playmaker ? Where is our striker ? Where is our WOW player ? Why does it take so long for transfers ? What the hell is muppet Wise doing ? WHY DO I SUPPORT NUFC ?

  • 126 toon badboy // Sep 1, 2008 at 19:44

people who think malouda would be a good signing must be nuts! he was a horrible buy for chelsea!! and to the people who say we should just buy players because our team is understrengthed dont know what they are talking about! we need players who want to play for the club not for the nice wage packet at the end of the week! just because malouda was good at lyon doesnt mean he is good in every league he just cant adapt to the english league simple as that!!

Won’t sign Bullard, as much as I like him - he’s too old. But Larsson, Appiah would be great signings - and obviously Mattias Fernandez would be FANTASTIC. Doubt they’ll happen though.

    kadlec (” ”)
    heskey
    palacios
    valencia
    matias fernandez
    skjerlbred
    lennon

    more i cant even remember….

there is no way we are going to sign ALL of these vut we do have a chance with some, say 4-5 OUT OV THAT ELEVEN….

  • 136 nick // Sep 1, 2008 at 19:55

Why is KK so obstinate over the following:-

    Barton - scum on 60K a week, won’t play for a year

    Smith - useless, on 60K a week.

Owen - money grabbing sicknote on £103k a week !!!

We may have a small squad, but it’s not like we’d be losing anyone who is doing us any use whatsoever. Bring on the youngsters.

Failing that, pray for an indian takeover.

Just reported of 5 Live that the investment arm of the Abu Dhabi Royal Family who have just bought Man City were looking at

    Arsenal
    Man City
    NUFC !!!

Man City was the easiest purchase - so they went for them. Two things to ponder on.

    a) We could have been the next cash rich club determined to buy success (outbidding Man U and Cheslki for any player) though possibly having to play a percentage of future home games in the gulf

    b) Ashley seems determined to hang on to the club

Given those circumstances, what would the people on this board have prefered Ashley the keen card player do - Stick or twist?
