With just 29 hours left in the transfer window we think it worthwhile to review what happened Sunday in the market plus other major news items on contracts.
Kevin Keegan - anxious time for Kevin - and the fans
- BBC Radio Humberside reported on Sunday that Hull have beaten Newcastle to the signing of Guinea defender Kamil Zayatte. Hull City Chairman Paul Duffen said the club have wrapped up a one-season loan deal for the 23-year-old Young Boys of Berne player.
We are surprised by this, and have to think that Newcastle were not too interested, but we think Kamil would have been a good signing.
Why couldn’t we have signed him for a one year loan – since there’s very small risk in that?
- Spanish club Valencia have announced today that a deal has been agreed that will send their Uruguay international midfielder Ignacio Gonzalez to Newcastle United on loan for the coming season.
The 26-year-old only just signed for the Spanish side in the summer, after being on loan at Monaco, but is seems strange he may already be surplus to requirements. He played for Daniubo since 2002 and played 178 games for them over six seasons, scoring 45 goals.
We think this is excellent news if true, because we need a playmaker in central midfield, But that probably means that we’ll net bring in Swiss International Gokhan Inler, who we really like.
- It seems we have good news (depending on how you fell about this) that captain Michael Owen has been offered a contract worth £120K/week. A Newcastle spokesman was quoted in reputable news channels yesterday, such as Sky Sports, that Michael has indeed been offered a new and improved contract of three years, which will keep Michael at the club until summer, 2012 – if he accepts it.
And don’t believe the nonsense that we decided to increase our offer of £80K/week - that’s the gossip papers trying to save face - he was never offered that in the first place.
A Newcastle United spokesman is quoted as saying:“Newcastle United can confirm that captain Michael Owen has been offered an extended and improved three-year contract.”
“The proposed terms of the new deal include an increased salary for Michael and demonstrate the club’s commitment to keeping him.”
“The club hopes that this enhanced contract offer will keep him at St James’ Park.”Who are the other players we may bring to the club in the next 29 hours – here are some we may be after:
- Rosenborg central midfielder Per Ciljan Skjelbred. Newcastle have been linked with the 21 year old youngster since early July, but whether we went for him depended on how things went with some of our other targets. Signing central midfielder Gonzalez may put an end to the bid, but Per Ciljan is one for the future, and we hope we can get this lifelong Newcastle United fan.
The youngster is a central midfielder who has just turned 21 years old in June.
- Gokhan Inler is still available and the Hamburg midfielder who plays for Switzerland, has been linked with the Tyneside club for a long time, but it may be we’ll not be able to do this deal now, with Gonzalez arriving.
- We’d love for the club to sign Eren Derdiyok, another Swiss International who is a striker and stands 6’3” and was the youngest player at Euro 2008, at 20 years old. Eren performed well for such a young player.
His goal is to play alongside Michael Owen, and we need a tall striker now that Ameobi may still leave us by tomorrow night. Shola was just hopeless against Arsenal on Saturday,
- We may still be able to attract Real Madrid forward and Argentine International Javier Saviola to the club, and we think it’s one we still be able to pull off in the next 24 hours or so. He’s full of class and we think Keegan could bring the very best out of him. Especially when we have two of his National team mates at the club already, Coloccini and Gutierrez.
- We don’t believe the rumors that we want Emile Heskey, we think he’s too old and too expensive, and we believe there are better players out there, for less money than Emile.
That’s what we think - now it’s your turn - comments very welcome.

We shouldnt be in this position, scratting round for players with only 24 hours of the window left, its a total joke. We have recruited, at ridiculous expense, a team of people to organize our transfers in a proffessional manner so what the hell is going on??
We knew before the end of last season that we were short of at least 3-4 players and we then proceded to sell a further 5-6 squad players. It doesnt take a genious on £150k a year to understand that first team replacements were going to be a major priority once the window opened.
Just like last season, we have cleary demonstrated an inability to recruit first team players of a suitable quality. So what was the point of Dennis Wise and his team? Ashley wants to reduce costs - I would think that Mr Wise will admit his failure and resign.
Unless there is some dramatic action later today, we are in for yet another torrid season where survival is the name of the game.
Deja Vu or what?

Howay Graeme, it’s hardly been a stunning loss all round has it. Even ManUre have relatively struggled to source and attain the player/s they need and we have managed to strip away some of the deadwood whilst bringing in four good players. The potential is there for more to come in, even for more of the dead/smith-wood to go out. Xisco would be sweet as to get, Atouba and whatever would (tbf) a bit meh, but the trust is there after getting in Colo, Spidey et al.
To expect miracle/wonder signings when we aren’t in Europe and aren’t going to waste money on over-inflated wages is daft at best, so try to keep a bit of faith. Until after midnight on Monday anyway.

Anyone else seen that Times rubbish about the Owen deal? The hacks are at it again!
Seriously though. When we sold Milner we advertised that he had put in a transfer request days before. Could the “leak” over the Owen contract be the club trying the same trick by different means? As in they imply the player is pushing to leave. If he does go in next 24 hours they can say “look we’ve offered him this great deal and he won’t sign, we had to cash in”.
I’m usually the optimist and don’t go in for all this nonsense but there’s something a bit odd about this one…
43 Robby Bobson // Sep 1, 2008 at 1:10
Impressed with Xiscos record, seeing as he would have been coming through and won’t have had a run of games. According to the Daily Mail, which i now means nout, Smith is going to Everton so he could be his replacement, and surely he can’t do any worse.
I have faith in the players that we are brining in now, seeing as the best three players against Arsenal were all new singings. As long as we get somebody in midfield to create, maybe that Uruguian dude, and a left back tomorrow i will be satisfied, but Xisco up front will be te iceing on the cake.
I don’t think the WOW signing is going to happen, although i think Colocinni was a big enough signing, as i thought he would be going to a European giant.
44 Spyro // Sep 1, 2008 at 1:15
xisco runour has picked up, its now on newsnow
45 Robby Bobson // Sep 1, 2008 at 1:15
BenjiToon - Its the papers again against newcastle. I had a huge rant the other day so wont have one again.
Although the Times was litteraly applauding how Nasri hacked down Barton off the ball.
But the French contingent made Barton look stupid and may regard it as poetic justice. Gaël Clichy nutmegged him and Nasri clipped his heels so that Barton was left on the ground looking hapless and indignant as play continued. “We know the guy [Barton], he wanted to make something for his first game back, but Samir did well and I’m proud of him,” Clichy said.
Well, i think Clichy or Nasri should have FA sanctions, even just a warning, because you cannot say Nasri did well by hacking down a fellow profesisonal off the ball deliberately.
So apparently its ok to kick players now according to Arsenal and the Times. Then again its Joey Barton and Newcastle so why wouldn’t the press support it.
46 Ross // Sep 1, 2008 at 1:16
well everyone on that depor forum is going absolutly mental at the fact there’s a chance he’s leaving. like from what i’ve read, there isnt a single comment that isnt along the lines of
“oh my god, what are we doing” or
“what idiot is deciding to sell him, he is the best young talent we have”.
the best one for me is “this is just a bad dream. this is just a bad dream. this is just a bad dream.” X about 20,lol
47 Mag of the South // Sep 1, 2008 at 1:18
Looking at Xisco’s record, he’s a must have. Get him now while he’s still young and can adapt to the PL style.
BTW let’s all laugh at Malaga!!!
48 BenjiToon // Sep 1, 2008 at 1:21
Bobby - aye you’re right. Barton’s transgressions don’t justify the actions of others. Although its hard to feel sympathy for him. The London press need to remember that it is’t just Barton or Ashley or even KK they hurt with this type of biased nonsense…its a nation of Geordie faithfull that just want their club to match their loyalty.
Anyway I’m going to bed lads. Now is the right time to catch zzzs ahead of tomorrow’s frenzied speculation, for three reasons:
1. looks like we signed a good young striker (badly needed)
2. looks like Smith is leaving (a good time to shift him on)
3. just seen highlights of Sunderland’s much vaunted new signings getting sutffed 3 nowt at home
I can sleep with a little less worry tonight. Bring on the flurry of signings tomorrow! (Hopefully!)

Here is some good info:
Xisco didn’t play a single match from start to finish in the 2007/2008 season and he ended up at 1627 minutes (the equivalent of 18 full matches). Of these players, only Guïza, David Villa, Bojan and Raúl González had a better efficiency with goals related to minutes. The difference is, the strikers mentioned all scored a couple of times from a penalty, Xisco never scored form a penalty.

His minutes to goals is very good.
79 Sav // Sep 1, 2008 at 11:02
Inler is also reported to have commented,
‘ No way would I join a club with all them Frenchies - Nasri, Clichy, Gallas and Silvestre. They all fart in the bath-water and wear too much eau de cologne. After what they did to my mate, Joey Barton them frogs can stick the Emirates up their Arsenal’.
On transfers, fair go to Smudger who at least has the guts to take a pay hit in order to rekindle(?) a flagging career and turn his back on 4 more years on easy street earning 60k in Toon. Good on yer, Smudge. Hope you avoid being booed for it next time we meet, athough I doubt it.
