Who Is Nile Ranger? - Plays For Reserves Tonight

September 1st, 2008 · 51 Comments

Newcastle United new 17 year-old striker Nile Ranger, will make his Reserve team debut tonight against North East rivals Sunderland at St. James’ Park.

Nile Ranger - 17 year old striker just signed by Newcastle

We knew Nile has been signed from Southampton a couple of weeks ago, but we have no record of the club having officially reported the signing.

Nile turned up on the bench for the Carling Cup 2nd round tie at Coventry, last Tuesday, which turned out to be such a great game for the fans, especially when we finally got through, after extra time.  :D

Nile played for Southampton’s Youth Academy team last season but was released in the summer.

The striker scored quite a few goals, including several doubles, but so far no hat tricks, for the Southampton side, and scored a goal in 13 seconds against the strong Arsenal Youth team.

He also played once or twice in the Southampton reserve team, and had a trial Swindon before the season began, and scored once for them.

We’re not sure why he was released by Southampton, but apparently he did spend some time in a youth offenders’ institute in Southampton.

So he comes with some baggage, and we have to believe that Kevin and his staff can get the young lad, who is apparently a very good player, back on the rails.

We’re confident Kevin can do just that, and he talked to the Evening Chronicle about Nile on Saturday:

“Nile will be on the bench tonight. We have had him around us for three or four training sessions.”

“It is still very early, but it’s an opportunity for him. He’s on the bench, and that means he could get on.”

That’s about all we know about him, but he will be on display tonight at St. James’ Park, and it will be interesting to see if Kevin can make it to the game, with all the transfer stuff going on – but we think Kevin will still manage to be there somehow. If he looks happy that might be a good sign for us.

Adam Sadler names the following side for the 7:00 pm kick off tonight;

Newcastle United Reserves:
Fraser Forster, James Marwood, Shane Ferguson, Mark Doninger, David Edgar, Ben Tozer, Jonny Godsmark, Ryan Donaldson, Nile Ranger, Fabio Zamblera, Frank Wiafe Danquah
Subs: Callum Morris, Ole Soderberg, Darren Lough, Patrick McLaughlin, Stewart Bath

Comments very welcome.

Keegan just doesn’t seem to like playing the kids. A foolish choice in my opinion, but there you go.

JEEEEEEEEEEEEZZ ! what’s the bad news ??? He was dialbolical on saturday, the only time he got near the ball was to get in Owens way on the one clear cut chance we created.

  • 13 Oba // Sep 1, 2008 at 15:22

    Teams that are going to be higher than us definitely this season;

    - Man Utd, Arsenal, Liverpool, Arsenal, obv.
    - Man City, Spurs, Villa.

So I reckon we’ll finish between 8-12. Fighting it out with the likes of Everton, Pompey, Blackburn and Boro for those positions.

  • 14 Frankieboy // Sep 1, 2008 at 15:23

Any more ex cons on the books and it’ll be like watching the “dream team” but not quite what we had in mind.
Vinnie Jones to replace KK ???

  • 47 mick // Sep 1, 2008 at 19:15

just seems like normal kid for nowadays, they ve all got asbos , anyway he might turn out to be great.

where ed speed missing you mate?

  • 48 KK // Sep 1, 2008 at 21:20

Ranger is a great talent, with awesome phyiscal power, good pace and also with a great finish both in the air and on the floor, he was awesome last season for southampton, finished our top youth goal scorer and missed 4 months of the season. all of us supporters and families who followed the youth team at southampton were very excited about him. you should be following him on the field and supporting your young talent, rather than critising and prying into his private life off the football pitch, he has moved across the country to play for newcastle and u should be pleased that newcastle have a talent like him. He is also making first team apperences on the bench, before even making a reserve apperence, surely this should tell u his ability, if Kevin Keegan is willing to put a player that has been at NUFC for less than a month in the first team squad? think about it. and does anyone know the score from the reserves tonight?

  • 49 bear pit // Sep 1, 2008 at 22:53

Yes just what we need another idiot. Seems we like these types like Barton and Carroll. We should go the whole hog and bring David Roche back as a coach.

  • 50 evildick // Sep 2, 2008 at 4:02

i could cry looking at this kids myspace page… how did it come to this????????

  • 51 Keeeguuurn // Sep 2, 2008 at 5:26

I also found his Myspace last week when I saw he was in the squad.

Yes, he is just a kid … but give him a chance.

Nile if you read this … and for some reason I think you will …
You are not a gangster … you are better than that .. you are a professional footballer in a premiership team. Its time to step up and show everyone what you can do.

Remember Owen was just a kid when he made it.

Dr. Ed Harrison is a retired IBM Consulting Group Executive who now has time, and lots of it, after 34 years at the American computer company, to write about his lifelong passion - Newcastle United Football Club.

Ed was born and bred in Newcastle Upon Tyne, and watched his first game at St. James’ Park in 1949 as a 4 year-old with his Mother and Father. He was told to look out for number 9 - Jackie Milburn – the great Wor Jackie - and was he fast!

In football terms Ed was a goalkeeper and played for Wharrier Street Primary School and Newcastle Minors (Newcastle Schoolboys Under-11), in 1956 and went on to play for Newcastle Schoolboys and Northumberland Schoolboys (Under-15) in 1959 and an England Schoolboys trial.

He was at Newcastle United for a couple of years from 1960 as an amateur, while still at school, and played with Bobby Moncur and David Craig, amongst others, for the Newcastle United Under-18 side (Newcastle N’s in those days), during the relegation season of 1960-1961.

Ed attended Heaton Technical and Manor Park schools, and then went on to study at both King’s College, London (BSc Electrical Engineering) and Newcastle University (PhD Computer Science). He played for Newcastle Universities and England Universities from 1967 until 1970.

But a short couple of years after Ed joined IBM in 1970, he was shipped over to the USA, with his new wife Madeline, a beautiful local Newcastle lassie.

At IBM Ed was in computer systems and network design for 34 years, and in his last 10 years at the company was persuaded to enter executive management. where he ended up running IBM's Americas' Network Consulting Group for 5 years from the late 1990s, and was instrumental in forming the IBM alliance with Cisco Systems in 1999.

Ed and Madeline live just outside Raleigh in North Carolina. Their twin sons Paul and Neil, and daughter Elaine, are now in their early 30s, live close by, and Neil has carried on the family tradition by becoming an avid Newcastle United supporter.

And one final thing that is so true - you can take the boy out of Newcastle but you can't take Newcastle out of the boy!

    Howay The Lads!!
