With just 29 hours left in the transfer window we think it worthwhile to review what happened Sunday in the market plus other major news items on contracts.
Kevin Keegan – anxious time for Kevin – and the fans
- BBC Radio Humberside reported on Sunday that Hull have beaten Newcastle to the signing of Guinea defender Kamil Zayatte. Hull City Chairman Paul Duffen said the club have wrapped up a one-season loan deal for the 23-year-old Young Boys of Berne player.
We are surprised by this, and have to think that Newcastle were not too interested, but we think Kamil would have been a good signing.
Why couldn’t we have signed him for a one year loan – since there’s very small risk in that?
- Spanish club Valencia have announced today that a deal has been agreed that will send their Uruguay international midfielder Ignacio Gonzalez to Newcastle United on loan for the coming season.
The 26-year-old only just signed for the Spanish side in the summer, after being on loan at Monaco, but is seems strange he may already be surplus to requirements. He played for Daniubo since 2002 and played 178 games for them over six seasons, scoring 45 goals.
We think this is excellent news if true, because we need a playmaker in central midfield, But that probably means that we’ll net bring in Swiss International Gokhan Inler, who we really like.
- It seems we have good news (depending on how you fell about this) that captain Michael Owen has been offered a contract worth £120K/week. A Newcastle spokesman was quoted in reputable news channels yesterday, such as Sky Sports, that Michael has indeed been offered a new and improved contract of three years, which will keep Michael at the club until summer, 2012 – if he accepts it.
And don’t believe the nonsense that we decided to increase our offer of £80K/week – that’s the gossip papers trying to save face – he was never offered that in the first place.
A Newcastle United spokesman is quoted as saying:“Newcastle United can confirm that captain Michael Owen has been offered an extended and improved three-year contract.”
“The proposed terms of the new deal include an increased salary for Michael and demonstrate the club’s commitment to keeping him.”
“The club hopes that this enhanced contract offer will keep him at St James’ Park.”Who are the other players we may bring to the club in the next 29 hours – here are some we may be after:
- Rosenborg central midfielder Per Ciljan Skjelbred. Newcastle have been linked with the 21 year old youngster since early July, but whether we went for him depended on how things went with some of our other targets. Signing central midfielder Gonzalez may put an end to the bid, but Per Ciljan is one for the future, and we hope we can get this lifelong Newcastle United fan.
The youngster is a central midfielder who has just turned 21 years old in June.
- Gokhan Inler is still available and the Hamburg midfielder who plays for Switzerland, has been linked with the Tyneside club for a long time, but it may be we’ll not be able to do this deal now, with Gonzalez arriving.
- We’d love for the club to sign Eren Derdiyok, another Swiss International who is a striker and stands 6’3” and was the youngest player at Euro 2008, at 20 years old. Eren performed well for such a young player.
His goal is to play alongside Michael Owen, and we need a tall striker now that Ameobi may still leave us by tomorrow night. Shola was just hopeless against Arsenal on Saturday, 🙁
- We may still be able to attract Real Madrid forward and Argentine International Javier Saviola to the club, and we think it’s one we still be able to pull off in the next 24 hours or so. He’s full of class and we think Keegan could bring the very best out of him. Especially when we have two of his National team mates at the club already, Coloccini and Gutierrez.
- We don’t believe the rumors that we want Emile Heskey, we think he’s too old and too expensive, and we believe there are better players out there, for less money than Emile.
That’s what we think – now it’s your turn – comments very welcome.

Comment #12We shouldnt be in this position, scratting round for players with only 24 hours of the window left, its a total joke. We have recruited, at ridiculous expense, a team of people to organize our transfers in a proffessional manner so what the hell is going on??
We knew before the end of last season that we were short of at least 3-4 players and we then proceded to sell a further 5-6 squad players. It doesnt take a genious on £150k a year to understand that first team replacements were going to be a major priority once the window opened.
Just like last season, we have cleary demonstrated an inability to recruit first team players of a suitable quality. So what was the point of Dennis Wise and his team? Ashley wants to reduce costs – I would think that Mr Wise will admit his failure and resign.
Unless there is some dramatic action later today, we are in for yet another torrid season where survival is the name of the game.
Deja Vu or what?

Comment #20Howay Graeme, it’s hardly been a stunning loss all round has it. Even ManUre have relatively struggled to source and attain the player/s they need and we have managed to strip away some of the deadwood whilst bringing in four good players. The potential is there for more to come in, even for more of the dead/smith-wood to go out. Xisco would be sweet as to get, Atouba and whatever would (tbf) a bit meh, but the trust is there after getting in Colo, Spidey et al.
To expect miracle/wonder signings when we aren’t in Europe and aren’t going to waste money on over-inflated wages is daft at best, so try to keep a bit of faith. Until after midnight on Monday anyway.
