The new Manchester City owners’ actions yesterday, are what Newcastle were really hoping would happen when Mike Ashley took over last summer.
Mike Ashley - not what Newcastle fans had hoped for
The Abu Dhabi United Group for Investment and Development [Adug], took over the club from former Thailand Prime Minister, Thaksin Shinawatra, and they immediately signed Robinho from Real Madrid, for £32.5M, beating of all clubs, Chelsea, to the world class Brazilian.
But nothing like that has happened at Newcastle, although to be fair Mike has put the finances of the club in much better shape, and he did pay off the £80M in debt, that we owed when he took over.
Mike has promised much but delivered little, and we thought he made a fantastic move by bringing Kevin Keegan back to the club last January.
There is still nothing official word from the club, but if it is true that Kevin is no longer manager, whoever is the new manager, will be the fourth manager in 15 months at the club. That says it all.
But there’s still time for Mike to come to his senses, although it’s hard for us to comment on the situation, since we don’t really know what happened, so we’re in dangerous territory.
But what Newcastle fans definitely want is Kevin back in as manager.
And then Mike Ashley can decide if w he really wants to own this club, which is much bigger than him, and if not he should sell it to some organization like The Abu Dhabi United Group for Investment and Development, who will invest in the club.
Can you imagine what it would be like on Tyneside today if had been Newcastle who had just bought Robinho?
No problem in selling season tickets then – that’s for sure – one less problem for the club.
A message to Mike – please don’t wreck this club, even though you own it.
Comments welcome.

well, said. Mike if your going to own this club do something with it because what you;ve done so far isnt enough. We (the fans) wont take it and will turn on you in a heartbeat and will force you out of the club. i cant stand people who arnt impeccable with thier word, maybe thats what kevin is also feeling at this time
3 Patrick // Sep 2, 2008 at 5:39 PM
If MA is really doing his crap, he is really forcing the supporters away, but this is wrong because we would just want him away; at this point, just pray for the best, guys.
Whatever happening is not changing to heart towards our beloved NUFC.
4 RamyNUFC // Sep 2, 2008 at 5:39 PM
Why would he destroy the club? He’s invested all that money so he’s hardly going to go in, devalue the club and sell it for less than what he paid for it. LET’S BE SENSIBLE.
5 Safferman // Sep 2, 2008 at 5:40 PM
I dont rate Robinho anyways, it was more of a statement to go an buy him, do you think Mark Hughes even knew about it untill the deal was done? SO even there the owners are deciding who to buy. But still I think KK should stay and do what he can even if the budget is limited, is it really the end of the world, walking out doesnt help the club, and if he loved the club so much, staying would be best…

8 SteveM // Sep 2, 2008 at 5:42 PM
There’s still absolutely NOTHING concrete about any of these stories – no comments AT ALL by any source at the club. Plenty of lurid detail about what exactly happened in a meeting somewhere not exactly sure where – and not sure with who.
Im sure KK is disapointed as im sure MA and others at the club at only being able to sign two more players before the transfer deadline. – it is possible that after 24 hours + of nonstop hard work tempers may have become frayed and they are trying to patch things up after some good shut-eye. Equally Newcastle’s patience with the endless bulls**t of the press my have snaped and they are just going to give the press enough rope to hang themselves with. Yesterday with all the transfer rumours flying around almost everyone in the press started publishing the most ridiculous rumors as fact as unpredicted after unpredicted transfer happened and only one predicted took place (Berbatov). Maybe the journalists just dont know where the bulls**t off button is.
Its ALL JUST RUMOUR ATM

Good article Ed.
Mike Ashley may own the club but he is only a custodian – I think some owners DO forget that. The club will always belong to the fans, they were here before and will be here long after.

I am a Brighton & Hove Albion fan who wishes KK well. I really hope he hasn’t left you Mags, football needs his charisma and passion. During his first spell in charge, I got a lot of pleasure from watching the flowing, attacking football you lot played. Even the mighty seagulls couldn’t match that lol. Seriously, I hope he stays, it appears he has been stitched right up and the delay is the club just thinking up the best spin to put on things. Maybe Bilic would be a possible replacement, or Bruce. Hope you don’t do the unWise thing and appoint the poison yobbo……Good Luck.

19 toonfan87 // Sep 2, 2008 at 5:49 PM
This is an absolute shambles. Is there ever a time as a Newcastle fan when you can just look forward to watching football and not wondering what the next over-hyped behind the scenes saga will be? If Keegan goes you have to ask the question what the next manager can bring extra to the club. I don’t think there is anyone out there today who could fill his shoes. I personally think Ashley brought Keegan in to quell any fears the fans had about relegation and boost morale but his plan was to eventually ease Dennis Wise in. Seems a bit far fetched but it seems to be happening now!
20 Gary // Sep 2, 2008 at 5:49 PM
This has been a public relations farce from start to finish. It has been reported that the meeting started at 10am, surely if Keegan is still in charge of the club something should have been announced by now. This could have been nipped in the bud very early if that was the case.
My guess is he is no longer manager and they are sorting out legalities over gagging rights etc. as Ashley will try to save as much face as possible after the latest episode in the Newcastle United Soap Opera.
I see a long garden path and we are all being lead up it by the Newcastle heirarchy.
21 bill // Sep 2, 2008 at 5:49 PM
The last time something like this happened was back in the Westwood era. I remember us hurling bricks through the windows at SJP. I’m not advocating doing this now even though I feel like doing it. Doesn’t this idiot know that KK is more important to us than he is?
If he insists on KK going then I suggest that he sells the club now because there is no way that we are accepting this shite. I doubt if he will venture into the away end in his B&W shirt anymore if he values his life.
22 magpie6699 // Sep 2, 2008 at 5:50 PM
BBC radio Newcastle reckon it’s all over and that the club are probably trying to sort out the wording carefully, things to do with pay-offs etc. Already talking about lots of money going on Gus Poyet for next manager …….I’m losing my powers of speech and the will to live.

So where now? We are KK have been treated with utter disregard by Ashley. He should use the international time ti sell up to that Indian dude and get out before he realises just what he has done to us. I so wanted to believe that he was best for this club, and the fact that he was English and a footy fan made me want it even more. But if KK has been sack, or lied to and therefore walked, I for one will no longer support MA’s actions. Words cannot describe how hurt and betrayed I am feeling right now.
31 Patrick (Pizzicato) // Sep 2, 2008 at 5:54 PM
We never know if it’s true, but from the first day of MA taking over, who’s speaking high of us? I think since NUFC is a weaker team to the media, they can make up stories too.

I hope you’re right & after he’s had a chance to cool down & look @ this rationally (where’s Mort when you need him?), that Ashley will realize this is the wrong move. A whole firm of PR guys can’t put a good spin on this. I’m in the US, but if I had a season ticket, I’d be outside the stadium for the Hull match with 50,00+ other fans & none inside. The players would know this was not a lack of support for them, but a protest against Ashley! Can you imagine the pix on the news of Mike in an empty SJ?

mike ashley has only ever thought of himself and not the fans. i have said it til ia m blue in the face, he is in it to make some money and get out. he has spent nothing on players at all. he has given kk nothing but lies and bull sincethe day he conned him into coming back. the only thing ashley can do now is sell us asap cos one thing is for sure, the longer he remains the owner the less attrtactive a purchase we will look as the fan base will shrink fast esp if he puts that turd wise in charge. wise will be even less popular than souness – and thats saying something. i see lots of new names on this blogg now, are you lot the same blokes that were singing ashleys praises b4 but have now had a rudec awakening. where are all the die hard ashley supporters now???? cumon lads, speak up pls. i am dying to see you explain this latest masterstroke away. since that fat turd bought our club we have been in the headlines constantly and all for the wrong reasons. he has made an almighty balls up of everything he has done since day one, with the ecception of bringing in kk. i wonder if that was why mort left, cos he knew this shit weas going to come down and he didnt want to be around when it did. ashley, i will repeatv what i have been saying since the day you came in, i hate you guts, i know what you are all about and at last even the blinkered ones will be starting to see the light – all be it, a bit too bloody late!!

Then we could enjoy watching great players come to the club.
Its the ONLY way forward.
MA is trying to imitate Arsenal, but even with the Brilliance of Arsene Wenger they need to invest more and more.
Unless we get Arsene in as Manager, just get a PROPER Billionare in and join the other BIG teams.

Absolute disgrace! That circus upstairs is bringing this club down, far from going forward. If KK has walked then I wouldn’t blame him one bit. He knows more about this club than anyone of them, he won’t cheat the fans or lie to us.. He has been promised this and that and at the end of it, it’s all been bollox from those upstairs..
I reckon KK has kicked off last night because he has been made to look a fool to all the fans. He has been promised then he has promised us, can’t trust those upstairs. What Does Dennis Wise know that Keegan dosn’t?

I’ll be honest- the day that Newcastle United is bought out by some foreign oil tycoon who’s only mad about trophies and primadonna players who command overrated salaries with no thought to a team’s tradition, history, and HEART- that’s the day I stop supporting the club (until things improve, of course… I’m no fair-weather fan). I like the idea of an English club being owned by an Englishman, but c’mon for chrissake! drop a few pounds and get a “quantity of quality”!! I just spoke to my uncle who is well imbedded in the club and what he believes is this (i dont endorse this in the slightest but thought id tell you anyway) Dont believe what you your hearing on the tv, keegan called the meeting with wise and said “i need to know who is in charge of this club coz if its you, sack me” Coz supposedly we didnt go for anyone he was after and they brought in these players because these were the people wise thought we could get..not the ones keegan wanted. Ashley has been called up to the north east to a meeting with keegan, however according to my cousin, keegan is backed off ashley and obviously off the fans, so its not over yet. We can shout sack the board as much as we like. Mike Ashley OWNS the club. He owns the ground, the players registrations…..everything. He appoints the board to run the club for him.
Mr Ashley is famous for not communicating well. This is one of the reasons Sports Direct (the company he owns 70% of) is not so popular with the city of London investors who put money into companies on behalf of insurance and pesnion funds. They do not trust him because he provides the minimum statutory information and he does not suck up to brokers/analysts.
One way to get his attention would be to boycot Sports Direct in the same way Liverpool boycotted the Sun after Hillsborough. This would cause him real pain and he may treat fans dreams with a little more respect.
Having said all that he may not be out of line here and we can not jump to immediate conclusions. I believe our Wow signing may have been sabotaged by the Man City thing and while KK would be pissed off it maight not have been MAs fault.
I have supported the Toon since 1968 and knew everything was not right at about 10.30 last night.

I have not been happy with Ashley since he took over he is a penny pinching twat “remember the players had to buy club suits !”
He has got to be the tightest billionaire I have seen at a club…i don’t give a damn if he cleared some debt he is nothing but a greedy fat bastard and spent money on poundstretcher players.

Ed, I used to think that this blog was worth reading. I’ll never darken this website with a hit again as that rates as the most ridiculous, childish, immature headline and post ever on Newcastle United. What age are you really? 8?
Ashley has just proven what we all thought for the last while. He is a crass populist, more interesting in perceived as being one of the fans, drinking while his (and our) team get thrashed by a properly run club, than acting like an owner, pathethic. leave while you still have some self respect. Full of leaks and bs on wow signings, his only intention is to make a profit by selling on the best players so that he can some of the money out that he lost by not doing his homework before he bought.
Wise will never be accepted as Toon manager, his position is poisoned due to his role in KK’s departure.
I will never spend another penny supporting that team until Ashley and his cronies are gone. They have no heart and no feel for the club and its needs.

I was willing to give Ashley a chance even after last night, but today has totally changed the way I feel
Lots of stories going round at the moment, one of them being that Keegan has gone because of his support of Barton. Now as much as I want to see Barton away from here (now not the time to go int that again) if that is the case, talk about hypocrisy. What about all the bother Wise got into all those years ago, smashing up a taxi among other things. How can he say Keegan has to get one thug/trouble maker out yet employ another as a director. Sort yourself out Ashley
89 Spyro // Sep 2, 2008 at 6:34 PM

91 simon376 // Sep 2, 2008 at 6:36 PM
If this is all because Keegan wouldn’t sack/sell Barton no matter how any of us feel about him, it stinks of hypocrisy. Wise was a little thug and in trouble with the law for smashing up a taxi. So you can’t sack a manager for wanting to keep one thug while making another a director
92 Dandra18 // Sep 2, 2008 at 6:37 PM
When Ashley took over, he said this would be a long, slow process and that it wouldn’t be very exiting at times. But when everything was in order, the club would be in a much stronger position. These could just be the growing pains. And to hear people calling for the return of Freddy is ridiculous, all he did was blow money on crap players. Say what you will about the slow progress int eh transfer market, every player Wise et. all have brought in has been a bargain and top class.
93 RossNe5UFC // Sep 2, 2008 at 6:37 PM

Ashley might have the keys to St James’ but the club belongs to the fans. If KK has been sacked then the best thing Ashley can so is sell up and move on as there’s nothing left for him in Tyneside. The fans are behind KK, it’s a shame the owner and the board didn’t back him. I wonder what Ashley will do with his empty stadium every Saturday afternoon?

So is that what we really want then? A takeover which will give us the money to join the frenzy of paying ridiculous amounts of money for players? No way Robinho is worth what City paid, they will not even finish top four with him.
If KK is really gone it is a sad day for NUFC, but then if we all remember, in the not so distant past, the hiring of KK in the first place was handked like a circus act. So why should we expect any different when he leaves? Why wouldn;t have KK been MA’s first choice over ‘Ol ‘Arry? Why bring in a guy who was loathed by all supporters of NUFC as a player to be your Director of Football? Then doing it without even letting KK know? He found out from the press if we all remember.
MA bought the club with doing “due diligence” why should we expect any different on any other matter?
Let’s bring in the next clown so the circus can continue. Ruud Gullit is now unemployed.

103 Ian // Sep 2, 2008 at 6:43 PM
The real mistake at Newcastle was not placing a professional football chairman at the club who knows football clubs inside out, he would never have given Wise or any other board member a position which would conflict or even appear to conflict with the manager’s position.
Ashley hasnt realised that upon taking on a football club a manager or player could be more important than any other person at a club, it is the nature of the business unfortunately.
Keegan was the key man in the whole club, if there was any conflict at all then unfortunately the others, even if it meant the whole board would have to go before Keegan.
Keegan is at the sharp end he brings in all of the revenue of the club, how Ashley as a businessman didnt identify this early on is beyond me, Keegan would also be first in the firing line of the stadium emptied and the team didnt perform, but that wasnt a problem with keegan.
A board of amateurs excluding Vetere have been kept in favour of a proven, succesful premiership manager, it surely must be dawning on Ashley what problems he has created.

Kevin Keegan – Official NUFC Statement
NEWCASTLE United can confirm that meetings between members of the Board and manager Kevin Keegan were held both yesterday and today.
Kevin has raised a number of issues and those have been discussed with him.
The Club wants to keep progressing with its long-term strategy and would like to stress that Kevin is extremely important, both now and in the future.
Newcastle United values the effort and commitment shown by Kevin since his return to St. James’ Park and wants him to continue to play an instrumental role as manager of the Club.
For the avoidance of doubt the Club has not sacked Kevin Keegan as manager.

Lets think about this. There will have been a meeting it will of got heated and maybe all parties have gone off to cool down before sitting down again. Ashley isn’t stupid and will relaise the backlash that will happen. Lets hope a miracle can happen and KK is back tomorrow to work his magic on the players we have at present and the little weasle wise is sent packing. KK needs to be involved in buying as he will convince players to sign as he did with Shearer, Ferdinand etc. If he has gone I won’t go until Ashley leaves or Shearer returns.

The spurs match is on the telly so I think the best protest is to take our shirts off , throw them back and everyone just walk out. It’s a peaceful protest which will gain maximum exposure.
Who does Ashley think he is? Let’s be honest here he has done nowt. His actual outlay on players is very little. Yes he’s paid off the debt, but I think it’s for a good reason. A quick sale would still put him in profit.

If only they let us know what they discussed during the meeting.

The one single biggest problem with the current management of the club is that they are utterly useless at PR and communication. The fans here need to be constantly told, officially, what is going on otherwise rumour, dissent and distrust spreads like wildfire. Chris Mort was a lot better at it – is Llambias actually doing anything? I can only remember one statement from him ever. If they talked to the fans this mess wouldn’t have got as bad.

Phew…pretty stressful day….totally off topic, but have you guys seen this…
The new owner of Manchester City, Dr Sulaiman Al-Fahim, has intimated that Abu Dhabi United Group for Development and Investment (ADUG) could back a £135million bid for Manchester United winger Cristiano Ronaldo in January.
The world has offically gone mad!

202 craig chisholm // Sep 2, 2008 at 7:15 PM
you need to look at the statement again lads – it does not say he is sacked but it does not say he is staying. i think he has chucked his hand in over wise’s over rulling him and buying players without even asking kk. of course wise uses MA’s money, so this therefore means that ashley is buying players without telling KK. this statement is nothing more than something trying to quell the fans. sacked or pushed, it matters not a jot if he has gone does it. this startement confirms nothing. one thing is for sure though, if wise stays kk has gone. if kk stays it means wise has been sacked. flip a coin lads and see which way it lads. i still think that kk has handed in his resignation and that the board initially accpted it but have shit themselves at the power kk has, he represents us, not MA or them other twats. to all theose fans ourtside sjp and us on here and ringing and emailing the club – i think our voice has made the difference between the owner and wise backtracking or accepting his resignation. I still think KK will walk though.

this meeting was only so we wouldn’t be arguing about our transfer activites…or demand answers from our board… if you fix the biggest problem (in this case phony…i think

they probably released a rumor about KK being fired…said nothing to the press, so you guys would alllll flip out and then come out and then saved the day
206 Ross // Sep 2, 2008 at 7:18 PM
all they need to do is back him and we will become the club we’re supposed to be.
its that simple. Kev is the man for the job, has a brilliant feel for attacking football, and still has a serious eye for talent.
let him find players he wants, and if he says they’re good enough and they’re worth the money, for christs sake give it to him!
all he wants is support from the board to fulfill the squads potential!
maybe i’m just daft but for me it looks black and white (sorry lads no pun intended).
a billionaire buys the club, he brings back a legend. that legend shows a vast improvement in the way we play our football, the new season starts well, he says he wants players, has them set out, and they give him the money. we make the signings, the squad strengthens, and newcastle united move forward, as the fans, and city in general fully deserve!

im a big fan of keegan like the rest of you, but we must use our head not our heart, keegan does not have the technical or tactical abilities to bring us back to the top. He is simply a passionate motivator. This club needs to switch with the times we need to bring in a manager from the continent, someone like zico, hiddink, rijkard, van haal, i was very surprised to say the least when he was appointed, and to be honest quites dissapointed however i have supported him all the way because he wont do worse than the muppets who held the job since robson. Thats the thing even though he is better than souness, roeder, allardyse he is not going to take us to our full potential. Obviously for things to change its not just keegan who in my opinion should go its ashley and the board as well. Times have changed, and now with the huge investment of man city, its no good building like arsenal have done for the last 10 years, because we will be too late. Im sorry if this angers a few people but i believe we need a top top continental manager who can attract top players and can be tactically superior, also with huge investment, else sadly i think we will just become a mid table team like wigan, fulham, middlesborough, and dare i say it drift away into the championship.

Listen… You dont know what has happened WHATSOEVER so try not to let your unjust hatred to Wise cloud your judgement… So far, Wise has done nothing wrong in his role to bring in youngsters, quite the oposite… MA on the other hand, has failed to deliver the goods in his 3rd transfer window in charge and that has to change. Im not saying i want him to go or anything like that, i still have faith in him, but he has clearly failed to live up to promises to KK or this tension wouldnt have happened, and it is very doubtfull whether we can steal a march on the other top 4 chasers such as Everton and Villa with our current squad

Get a proper professional football chairman in who can work with KK, get Wise in charge of the academy and only on the board when it involves the academy and put some proper structure in place so everyone knows what everyone else does.
Kevin Keegan is most important in our club, Martins and Owen are next, everyone else is easily replaceable.

Ian, I totally agree with you. We need a proper football Chairman. Someone that is in touch with the game and knows what it takes to run a club. And a proper structure will benefit all involved.
Plus NUFC needs to learn to communicate. Who the hell is in control of PR. They have no idea how to handle any sort of situation and communication to the press and the fans.
In anyway, there is still something very wrong here. No club would stay silent on a rumour of this nature for this long. Don’t be blinded, there is a huge power struggle going on here.
Also MA should realise he has no idea of running a football club and that his chairman and directors even less. Either get the proper people in or sell up. I think MA is out of his league anyway!

Dammit, I’m annoyed at EVERYONE today.
I’m annoyed at MA, Llambias et al for apparently forgetting to set up a PR and communications department when overhauling the club, and for mucking about in the transfer market.
I’m annoyed at the press for jumping to conclusions/making stuff up. They’ve been waiting for something like this, and undoubtedly gave it a little push themselves.
I’m annoyed at KK for his stance on Barton and Smith, which nobody else agreed with (including the board) which I think has only exascerbated matters. And for his tendancy to walk when the going gets tough.
I’m annoyed at the section of our fans who behave like insular knee-jerk mongs. Distrustful of anyone from south of Low Fell, spouting useless and stupid catchphrases like “sack the board” and “they don’t have our passion”. Well good! If the people in charge had our passion we’d be up the swannee well and good cos we’d probably take out unwise loans to buy Kaka for three times his value for a brief blaze of glory before we have to give the stadium to the recievers and ferret in bins. We’d be useless.
I’m not actually annoyed at Wise, cos contrary to the majority of comments on here (see the previous paragraph) I’m not aware of anything he has actually done to justify it. Don’t mean I like him that much, though.

Keegan was sacked as he told close friends; however, Ashley has seen the consequences of such action and therefore, he is donning his utmost to change fans opinion. Keegan will not return unless there are major changes, such as the departure of Wise…
Keegan, please come back, you are Mr Newcastle and we all love you!!!!

geordie jock – there was always a chance that when Keegan returned it would end it tears. If he walks it is HIS decision and no ones fault but HIS own!

keegans obviously been sacked then ashley has sh*t when he seen the reaction and backtracked, sack wise, sell a controlling stake in the club at least, preferably sell the lot tho, to someone who is willing to invest

Not sure what is going on. Lots of rumours, one of them being that Mike Ashley has stepped in as a mediator. Maybe more BS but it seems to me that the problem is between Kev and the the suits that know nowt about Footy. Simple solution… let the football manager manage ALL football matters, including players IN AND OUT. If wise must stay tell him to stick to the youth team or scouting or whatever the hell his job actually is and wind his neck in or risk it being stamped on. Then find a managing director that isn’t an ex-casino gaffer, that way Ash might stop blowing the transfer coffers on the roulette table.
