After the close of the summer transfer deadline lat night, Newcastle United announced formally they had completed a season-long loan deal to bring 26 year-old Uruguayan international Ignacio “Nacho” Gonzalez to St. James’ Park. As we reported earlier today.
Ignacio Gonzalez – here on a one year loan deal
The 26-year-old signed for La Liga club, Valencia, this summer from Montevideo-based club Danubio, where he made his professional debut in 2002, and previously had been his only club.
The midfield star, who has been likened to Germany’s Michael Ballack, won the Uruguayan Premier Division title in 2004 and 2007 before moving to French side AS Monaco on loan last season.
Nacho has 15 caps got his country Uruguay, and he will be away on World Cup duty until the middle of next week.
We needed another central midfielder. that’s for sure, so we think he could be a sensible and good signing for the club, and if he lives up to expectations, we assume we have first option on the player next summer.
We had hoped that Norwegian 21 year-old and Newcastle United supporter Per Ciljan Skjelbred, from Rosenborg, would have been brought into the club, but that didn’t happen, although we believe January may see Newcastle bring more players into the fold.
Gonzalez was the second player announced by the club, and it fills another hole in our line up – central midfield.
What do you think?
Let us know – comments and opinions are very welcome.

Comment #43If this vid is anything to go by, he looks pretty sweet. He makes space well for himself, has quick feet and is a good runner. Likes a shot from distance too..

Comment #46Well, we have now signed one player and have another one on a season long loan.
We will pay for Nacho, train him, play him, improve him and at the end of the season we give back to Valencia a vastly more experienced and valuable player. Unfortunately, stop-gap signings like these do us no long term favours.
The squad looks better this morning to be honest, but a top half finish looks to be all we are looking forward to. I was hoping MA had greater vision and expectations for the club.

Comment #47To be very honest I have never been so depressed about the Toon since I started supporting them as a little kid in 1955. It’s going to be a very long season for us. Mind I think football is going to hell in a hand cart all it’s about is money money money No soul, no loyalty, not even good football

Comment #52Congatulations to Newcastle Uniteds intrepit recuitment team for keeping up their proud tradition of only signing players that nobody else has never heard of. My only conclusion of this is that it’s a tactical masterstroke by KK , Toons opposition will have to watch all the video archives to see if any of the signings have ever appeared in a televised game before, which of cause they hav’nt because they are only a bunch of pub-team players. they wont know whats hit them

Comment #53Nacho looks strong! Excited by this now
Just need to get the midfield working well, defensively, now.
I reckon having someone like Xisco who is quite strong (esp for age) and tall leading the line, MO can nip in and around netting the goals, Nacho can create
Being able to keep the ball in the opponents half will really take the pressure off our defence

Comment #54I dont care about the so called “wow” signing comments, what does bother me now is that KK told us to judge him come monday night…ok, what should we judge him on – seriously??
MA is making us into a laughing stock, yet again…I wish the FA/Police would chuck the book at him for that stupid drinking stunt at the weekend. No1 else in the stadium had alcohol in the stands, so why the hell should he get away with it?!
We need to compete for players, not just sit back and say “ah they wont come to us, what have we got to offer”…

Comment #55Toonrich i agree with you. We should attract at least one mega star to raise the bar……we don’t want too many of these mega stars or we’ll end up like real madrid…why ohhhh why…did u go there ronaldo ruined you whole career! The most feared striker reduced to an average player…
