The Sun is reporting that an inside source has let them know what went on Monday afternoon.
Michael Owen and Kevin – did they try to sell Owen behind Kevin’s back?
It’s The Sun so we have no idea if this is just another made-up story, but if it’s true what they say Kevin Keegan has every right in the world to be upset.
This is what the source said:
“Kevin believed he would get money to spend from Milner’s sale but it was clear he wasn’t going to get a penny to spend on the last day of the transfer window.”
“So when he found out the club were trying to sell Owen and Barton, he hit the roof. It was the final straw.”
“It was a tense and angry showdown and Kevin wasn’t giving any ground. He was determined players were not going to be sold without his say so.”
“He felt that, while he had little control over the players coming in, he could certainly do something about anyone going out.”
“But the board didn’t like his attitude. As far as they are concerned, Keegan was being paid handsomely to accept their decisions.”
The structure in place is a decent one, and it may well be that the people in place, and not the structure is what’s not working. If indeed Dennis Wise or any of the recruitment team, or even Mike Ashley himself, are determining who comes and goes at the club – it will not work.
It has to be Kevin who has that responsibility 100%.
One way to ensure that is to have Wise and his recruitment team report to Kevin. Then Kevin by definition will control all player personnel. And if Wise refuses to work for Kevin – he reports directly to Derek Llambias right now, as does Kevin, then so be it – and he can leave the club.
We hope we are told fairly quickly what did go wrong, and the time is up for sugar coating it all. Maybe it will result in an expanded role for Kevin, and that would be a good solution. Another change that would work is get a Newcastle Chairman, who is a football man, and who can work closely with Kevin Keegan.
Derek Llmabias has no experience whatsoever of football management, and however good a business man he may be, he’s got to be like a duck out of water. And before the Chairman is selected make sure he has a good chat with Kevin, to ensure they can work together.
We hope this situation doesn’t drag on to much longer, and there’s still a possibility they may still not be able to reach an agreement, but at this point we think that’s very improbable, though still possible.
