Newcastle Issue Statement on Keegan Resignation

September 4th, 2008 · 160 Comments

Newcastle United have just issued a statement on the Kevin Keegan resignation, which Kevin announced just over an hour ago.

This is what the official statement says:

“Newcastle United Football Club is sad and disappointed that Kevin Keegan has resigned.”

Over the last few days the Club has devoted itself to the discussions it has held with Kevin and as a result of those discussions had put together a set of practical suggestions for how to move forward.”

“Today the Club made it clear to Kevin that if he had any outstanding concerns on its proposals, he should raise them with the Club.”

“The Club regrets that Kevin has, instead of taking up that offer, chosen to resign.”

That seems a rather terse statement, and certainly by its tone, suggests disagreement and even some hostility between the Board and Kevin. We suppose that isn’t too surprising.

But it also seems like Kevin has unleashed the flood-gates in Newcastle, by resigning, and rather than spend more fruitless days discussing things with the board, he’s decided it’s just no use.

If it’s true that the Board would not give him control over all transfers, and who he wants to keep at the club, it seems he has a legitimate right to walk out, because there’s just no way a manager can manage under those conditions.

So sad.

Someone is destroying this club, and it’s not the fans or the players, that’s for sure.
Comments welcome.

If they did everything they could how come llambarse and dwarf are still in a job-Bollox.I still dont think we should not turn up for the match against Hull but should turn up and sing Keegan for the full 90mins

just sent this via the Your Shout page on nufc.co.uk:

Yet another shambolic week in the history of our great club. The official club announcements on this website have begun to stink of spin, frankly, and if you think we fans are blind to this, you’re in for a shock.

Kevin Keegan bleeds Black and White, does Dennis Wise? Does Derek Llambias?

In fact, has our new Chairman/MD/Whatever he is even uttered a word in public since his appointment? I certainly can’t recall any statements directly from this man appointed to run our club (I stress the our as without supporters, there is no football club). I beg, what is his footballing background? Or was he merely brought in to oversee some future development of a casion/gambling complex attached to the stadium? I certainly feel we are yet to see him add any value to the day to day club business.

The fans and supporters of NUFC feel both dismayed and humiliated by your recent actions which have served only to destabilise and destroy what was, essentially, a promising start to the campaign.

Dennis Wise should not be allowed anywhere near the Home Team dugout at St. James’s Park, and if he is even under consideration to take up the post of manager, the club directors and ownership needs to take a good long look at theirselves, because you are about to feel the biggest fan backlash seen at this club in a long, long time.

Shame on you. Shame on you all.

    ———–

pretty much sums up my feelings on the matter.

Gutted keegan decided to leave but the appointment of wise kind of screwed him over.
dont know what manager we can get in now that can
    a) get the best out of the players in what is a horrendously small squad
    b) knows newcastle better than keegan
    c) and will put up with not being able to sign the players they want to.
also thoughts on a new manager
all i can think of is domenech there’s not really anyone good out there atm!!!!

BennAllen - Keegan will only return under a new owner, he’s clearly lost faith in Ashley.
To me it doesn’t seem like the club did all it could to keep Kevin. I firmly believe that if we wanted KK to stay so badly, we could have. Again the supporters are not treated seriously and left in the dark. We want the truth Ashley!

  • 59 JJ // Sep 4, 2008 at 21:11

I cannot believe how things at this club just go from bad to worse. We must have the worst owner in the league if he cannot give the manager the choice of who he decides to buid HIS team with!!!!!!

I agree that the game should be boycotted!!!!
This club is finished until Mike Ashley leaves!!!!
No matter who turns up, moral will be low and I have no doubt if we go a goal down to Hull we will lose.

We lost our best managers first Sir Bobby Robson and then KK just because someone want to make benefit from NUFC! Don’t leave it like that guys! We want noone anyone else for manager but King Kev! Bring him back! Bring KK back!

Newcastle United are not a football club anymore, its a business. I have read the statement issued by them tossers and I do not believe a word. How can a former casino manager know more about what we want than a Newcastle legend ? Ashley would be well to stay away and I hope I get the pleasure of bumping into that malignant cockney twat …. the pleasure will be all mine.

I will be there on the 13th and I will sing Keegan’s name until my voice goes.

I am absolutely disgusted by the attitude shown to all of us and it has proved that the current board have the inherited the worst qualities of the owners from Seymour to Shepherd. It makes me sick.

  • 68 alan dart // Sep 4, 2008 at 21:16

Hopefully M/A will sell up and the new owner will bring him back. I am totally disgusted at my club (board level), the only way forward is for them to go. I for one am not interested in the way this club is conducting itself. Sorry kev.

  • 69 tripp // Sep 4, 2008 at 21:16

If you have a season ticket, demand a refund. Don’t show up to games. Don’t buy tickets to games. Don’t by the kit. Find creative ways to support the players, but don’t fund ashley to do it. Make NUFC an example to all would be hobby owners. Unless the fans make a disciplined effort to show MA that he’s going to have to pay, it will all be for nowt.

Do the unthinkable, take a holiday from football for a season.

If you really love the club you have to put its long term health above your desire to watch the matches. The players know the score. Not turning up won’t put them off. Besides, how many of them will be here in a season or two? Think about the long term, not the short.

Seeing that we are ran from London by Ashleys cronies why dont we follow the example and walk as fans (black and white flags unfurled) to the capital. Plenty of coverage in the chip papers, better than singing sack the board and say we want our Kev back! We want Ashley out!!! Its about the time the fans spoke for the nation!!! I find myself in total bewilderment on this. Kevin Keegan has done totally the right thing in leaving Newcastle and some sort of protest or boycott needs to happen to show that football fans not just Newcastle fans will no longer tolerate the fat cats of the game ruining it. The aim was for this club to move forward slowly and progress but there was never any chance of that with the likes of Dennis Wise in a position of power at the club. No club needs a director of football and Ashley and the board have made a laughing stock of the club. Any manager who takes this job under Ashley and Co will be here for the money as they will be a yes man for the board with no freedom to manage properly. Keegan leaves with his head held high and any real football fan will agree. Mike Ashley will be left with no choice but to find a buyer for the club now as he has lost the fans once that happens there’s no turning back. If Dennis Wise or Gus Poyet are appointed manager of this club then we will be relegated this season. Players wont play for someone they dont respect!!

  • 87 Gordon Lee // Sep 4, 2008 at 21:24

Why did that idiot Ashley appoint Keegan in the first place.

He should have known how Keegan managed and supported him in that.

The fans will never forgive Ashley.

Sell the club now and return your shirt - you do not deserve it.

  • 88 rab // Sep 4, 2008 at 21:24

I am a total loss, but I do know one thing, not going to spend 1p more towards NUFC, until he leaves. I am trying to find out what shops Ashley owns so I can stop buying from them, its more than sports direct, we could close down the Newcastle stores in a month if we all stop buying there, not many out of 400 outlets but it would be a message, Shearers bar etc would be closed within months also alongside all the club stores. I am so angry that Denis Wise and a Casino manager are destroying our club. At least the councellors at the civic agree with us and joined us with our strang feelings.

Who in their right mind is going to want to manage Newcastle now. Absolutely no fecker. The club is now more of a joke than under the last regime and our only hope is Osama Bin Laden taking over and blowing it up…

  • 94 Thomas // Sep 4, 2008 at 21:27

Any1 got links to sky?? as im outside the uk…

  • 95 Patrick (Pizzicato) // Sep 4, 2008 at 21:27

    @Boater
I kinda disagree. If we have a new owner, this would get resolved immediately.

Whether KK is coming back though, it’s his choice.

  • 96 MAG PIE // Sep 4, 2008 at 21:27

JJ - 72 - that’s right - hit him in Sports Direct - leave NUFC alone so DIC will buy.

I say - sit-in at Sports Direct 1.30-2.30pm on the day of the Hull game

Email and generally disrupt Sports Direct in any legal way possible

  • 97 geordiewannabefromwales // Sep 4, 2008 at 21:29

never mind boycotting cos that will effect the players.

just protest outside ground (though i cant cos im in wales) and sing KEEGAN all through Hull game.

  • 98 STEVEYO // Sep 4, 2008 at 21:29

The football club that is owned by Mike Ashley is not Newcastle United SO DON’T SUPPORT HIS CLUB
I f we get relegated then so be it until he sells up they get nothing from me not even a passing glance when driving past.Thirty years and av never felt so low

  • 99 Gibbo // Sep 4, 2008 at 21:30

Who will want to be manager of Newcastle now?

No big name will ever agree with the set up in place at the club!

Put this down to experiance MA and leave the club, it doesn’t matter if you don’t get all your money back. Just do what us fans want you to do for a change!!

  • 100 Crow11 // Sep 4, 2008 at 21:31

I just dont get this… This club has no idea of leadership nor communication to fans. Everyone was left in dark for three days and now the statement makes KK look like a vilian… And then Ashley backs DW and DL (who in my eyes is the true problem and virus)!

So there is only one way to handle this. Everyone on here loves the club and MA needs to see the way the supporters feel. There is only one way, presurre him into selling. Make life unbearable. This man loves his privacy, so getting bad publicity will make him realise he needs to sell up.

And for the fans that says they will go and support the team, fine, but do you think this will make any statement other than Ashley thinking we are all sheep??

Something constructive should be done though. An organised event, and hopefully nufc.com will get it right after asking for comments from fans. Go and post there as it may lead to an organised protest.

MA needs to understand he made a huge mistake and his time is up. This man can not be trusted, and to think so many did.

Hopefully somebody will bail us out of this mess!

In the end, it is the supporters that ‘owns’ the club, but they should raise their voice in combined and structured fashion to bring this point across.

If I was closer I would have loved to help organise anything to boycott the club, but now I can only raise my vocal support and hope the loyal local people bring the point across.

my comments never show up why is that

  • 102 mag in boro // Sep 4, 2008 at 21:32

think chris waddle has lost his mind
a part of his statement from bbc

“Wise will be put in temporary charge now. They never seemed to have got on professionally. But if Keegan was unhappy about his appointment he should have done something back in January.

“There’s a lot of anger on Tyneside right now. But the funny thing about football is that if Wise wins the next three games, what happens then?

just got home…..turn on the laptop …..and booom like a bomb went off……

this simply tops it off….last straw….what we have endured in the last 10 years bar Sir Bobby era, is simply a disgrace……we had our lows over the years but this is just plain insane…..how can Ashley defy us like this ??? what does he think ?? that this will just blow over ???!!!

I’m an abroad fan, i live in Romania…and every year i spend wast amounts of my hard earned money to fly up at least twice to Newcastle and watch a game…….this is a disgrace…what Ashley has done this past month should not be allowed ….if there will be a demonstration or something i swear i’m flying to Newcastle to participate……………

i admit that i shed a tear when i saw this tonight…..gutted to the core…..to defy KK, the fans and the whole city like this i simply unbelievable to me….

if the Fat F*ck now installs Wise i swear ……ah shit what can i do ?? what can we do?? he must not get away with this….

i’m seriously rocked…just gutted….don’t even care anymore…NUFC will just fade away under Ashley..

  • 104 carl // Sep 4, 2008 at 21:34

i think ashleys guna sell.he cant get out of this any other way.imagine the hatred that would be thrown at him and the board at matches.before the match ,at half time, and after the match.BUT not while the players are out their playing for us

  • 105 natedawg // Sep 4, 2008 at 21:34

best case scenario , ashley sells the club to da indian bloke and he immediatly reinstates kk in time for the match with hull , and signs owen up for 4 more years.

    i wish

  • 106 StevieA // Sep 4, 2008 at 21:35

Boycott the club? Don’t turn up for matches? Protest and make ourselves look like even bigger idiots on Sky Sports News?

    Yeah why not! (sigh)

The biggest problem Newcastle United has is the fans, the sooner people realize this the better. I support Newcastle but I can see that the club has a real problem with lack of patience, belief and for want of a better term mass hysteria.

Yes Kevin is a legend but he resigned, Mike Ashley didn’t sack Kevin. Kevin walked out and do you know what? I half expected it, I am not shocked like the lads ringing up the 3 legends. I expected this to happen at some point, although I admit it’ s come much sooner than I expected.

We have a european setup much like Barcelona and Real Madrid, the manager is to focus on the team, Wise, Jiminez and Verture put potential targets forward. Derek Lambias OK’s the deals if Kevin wants the player but Lambias and Keegan haven’t got on well, apparently Lambias sacked Keegan after a heated argument and it took Mike Ashley to organize talks between Kevin and the board. Mike Ashley didn’t save Kevin Keegan, yes his policy eventually forced Kevin to resign but the man didn’t sack Keegan.

People are saying that Newcastle is a business now, well good that means we will be around for a long time and will never do a Leeds. It takes patience to build a strong team and club but that’s something that our fans don’t have.

I hope we bring in someone like Frank Rijkaard as manager, someone with a presence and knows how to get the best out of players because that’s what the club needs. I can’t see Kevin coming back and I am sad about that but it’s not the end of the world, the club is still here and as long as that’s the case I will support it. Keegan would be the first to say no one man is bigger than Newcastle United, so don’t boycott your own club if you do that you are playing the game the southern press want you to play. Don’t you understand that? They will have a field day!

    - I Know its hard but try not swear because the emails might get blocked. And we want to prove a point.

    Heres what I said:

Please inform your fat owner that his service to Newcastle United Football Club is disgusting and he has no clue how to treat a hero.
Also inform him the services of Dennis Wise are no longer needed.

    Regards

    Now let me see:

    1. He puts all Newcastle players up for sale on Monday;

    2. He buys no one if some of the info on here is correct;

    3. He sells Newcastle fans 3 year season tickets for which they for now.

What does this spell out to you guys?

I don’t know about you but it sounds like he is getting in as much cash as he can before something happens!

Congratulations. You have successfully signed the petition:
VOTE OF NO CONFIDENCE IN THE NEWCASTLE UNITED BOARD.

  • 119 Goggiv // Sep 4, 2008 at 21:50

What a terrible day in the history of Newcastle United.

  • 120 steve // Sep 4, 2008 at 21:50

I don’t think Ashley, Llambias and Wise actually give a toss what the fans think - they’ve already seen the bad press generated over the last few days and have clearly been happy enough to force Keegan to resign - all this talk of supporting the players is nonsense - thats exactly what they’re thinking we’ll do - i.e. turn up to support the team and maybe shout some abuse at them - they’ll then bugger off back to London until the next match, I don’t think Wise will give a monkeys and he’s had abuse everywhere he’s been.
At the end of the day Ashley was always going to back his chairman and his decisions.
    My predictions are thus

Foreign manager who is used to having players dictated to him brought in (possibly rikjard if he’ll take it as he’s currently out of a job and will cost nowt)
Barton/Smith/Viduka and possibly Owen (if he ain’t injured) sold in Jan transfer window

Few cheapish foreign imports brought in

We’ll likely end up in 10th place and be no worse off than last season

Ashley happy with mid table mediocrity and running the club at a profit

The players revolt that people are mentioning is laughable - none of the players were signed by Keegan so whilst they may have liked him, they’re hardly going to start playing badly because he’s gone.

And why do they owe us a further explanation?
They’ve already said they did everything in their power to keep him and he resigned. They’ve already shown their contempt for the fans so don’t hold your breath

Someone mentioned earlier that Ashley was off on holiday to barbados so I’ll imagine he wont even be at the Hull game anyway.

  • 121 geordie jock // Sep 4, 2008 at 21:55

I can’t believe what i’m seeing from fans. I’ve bought a season ticket so i will go to matches as it’s hard on the players. Do you think the players will care. They will probably be right behind a BOYCOTT as they all loved Keegan. Looks like some of you fans are as gutless as the fat B*****d running the club.Hit him where it hurts for god sake or else he will do it again. I’ve thought long and hard about this and am not going to belittle myself any longer. Come on you fans and show some bottle not just talk.

  • 122 gorskino10 // Sep 4, 2008 at 21:56

This is sad but the thing is were kinda powerless to do anything, the only thing is protest and hope players join. and also bycott the Hull game if we make that lowest ever attendance that will show msg to them.
