At an independent Regulatory Commission hearing today in London, Newcastle United midfielder Joey Barton was given a 12 match suspension, six matches of which are suspended until the end of the 2009/2010 season, and fined £25K.
Joey Barton – will serve only 6 match ban initially
Barton had already admitted a charge of violent conduct, relating to an assault on his then Manchester City team-mate Ousmane Dabo at City’s Carrington training ground on 1st May 2007.
He is suspended for six matches with immediate effect, and the suspended sanction of six further matches will be automatically invoked in full should Barton be found guilty of any similar charge involving violence or be dismissed from the field of play for violent conduct (but not for serious foul play).
A statement from the independent Regulatory Commission Chairman Maurice Armstrong after the hearing said:
“Much has been written about Mr Barton over recent months. The Regulatory Commission had the benefit of taking all appropriate information into consideration. The Commission members considered principally the serious attack by Mr Barton that clearly cannot be accepted.”
“The members also had to take into consideration the sanctions imposed by the courts and the pro-active support Mr Barton has received from Newcastle United FC and other professional bodies.”
“The Commission members wanted to punish the offense appropriately but give Mr Barton an opportunity to ensure his professional conduct does not falter again and ensure he is fully aware of the consequences should he make another serious error of judgement.”
That in fact is not too bad a sentence for Barton, given the circumstances, and Barton would be available in a couple of months time to play for Newcastle.
It’s just a pity he will not be playing for Kevin Keegan, that’s all.

Comment #83We cant let NUFC get relagated, this will happen if we turn against the team, I’ve seen toon relagated 3 times, this is 10 times worse than loosing a manager. Ashley wont be around for ever but the toon will go on.

Comment #84PERSONALLY I FEEL WE HAVE TO GO TO THE GAMES BECAUSE WE SUPPORT NUFC, BUT WE MUST FORM SOME SORT OF PROTEST ASWELL, AND NOT JUST FOR HULL – FOR EVERY GAME!! ITS NOT A CASE OF DONT GO OR DO NOTHING, AS SOME ARE MAKING IT SOUND. WE CAN STILL GO, WE CAN STILL PROTEST, WE CAN STILL BOYCOTT SPENDING IN THE GROUND, BUT MOST IMPORTANTLY WE CAN STILL SUPPORT THE TEAM WHEN THEY NEED US

Comment #89everyone – nufc.com have published the followin after readin all the e-mails:
Not to boycott the Hull game.
Not to buy club merchandise, including food & drink.
Not to drink in Shearer’s Bar or any bar within SJP.
Not to shop at Sports Direct, Sports Soccer & Lillywhites.
This has to be the best solution, and would make a better effect if everyone carried it out.

Comment #91BEN. pull ya head oot ya arse ya muppet. ya just jumping on the band wagon. call yourself a supporter. bollox. boycotting games is totally pointless and will achieve zero. fair enough, do it at a cup game where the missing revenue will kill Ashley but to not go to a game you have already paid for is STUPID.

Comment #93Part 1…People who thinks Ashley pours ANY money into this club needs to get a reality check. MA see’s us as an investment, which over time, can boost his other companies like sports direct through the sporting connection of NUFC and the free advertisement his company get whenever NUFC is mentioned. MA has spent the money it takes to get himself his own private EPL club… Well boo fooking hoo, lets give the man a medal… No one should be expected to use their OWN MONEY when they want something huh?… I bought a car last winter and i used my OWN MONEY to buy it, give me a medal?… And Yah he used his OWN MONEY to clear the debt of his football club… Well i would also use my OWN MONEY to clear the debt in my house so i could get rid of the interests, would that make me a hero?

Comment #95I also like the idea of dingo’s, to wear the brightly coloured t-shirts over the shirts. Nice touch to give all proceeds to Bobby Robson’s fund.
We need to all agree on something , otherwise the gesture will be lost.

Comment #101Beyethegreat – I understand, we all want to support the players but how long are we going to put up with the continual mismanagement of the club. Successive owners have gambled on us turning up for decades, knowing that whatever bad decision they make will blow over and those ‘stupid’ Geordie’s will still turn up.
Not buying a few thousand pints of beer means nothing. Imagine the financial effect of 52,000 not travelling to the game, it would put a severe dent in the finances of the city and its businesses adding more pressure for Ashley to sling his hook.
Only a full boycott will suffice, if not we deserve what we get.
